ABSTRACT:
Electrical energy plays a vital role in our day today life. A
nd now it has been seems to be oneo
f the basic needs of the human beings. As, the populatio
n keeps on increasing the demand on the
electrical energy is also increasing. The resources fort
he electrical energy generation are also
depleting at a faster rate. So now it has been essential
go for an alternative method to generate
electricity. Under this situation, we have done a projec
t in which we can generate electricity by
walking on the staircase. This paper deals about this met
hod of generation of electricity. It is a nonconventional method of electricity generation. Non-conv
entional energy system is very essential at
this time to our nation.
1. INTRODUCTION:

The weight which acts on the staircase

is used to generate electrical energy. The
mechanical energy (weight) is converted into
electrical energy using drive mechanism such
as rack and pinion assemble & chain drive
mechanism.
When a person claims the
staircase, a force has been acted on the step
which has been placed at a certain angle of
inclination. Due to the force the steps moves
downward and so the rack will moves down
and so the pinion gear which has been
connected to the rack will tends to rotate. This
rotational speed has been increased using
chain and sprocket drive.
This rotational movement of the shaft
is coupled to a D.C. generator with the help of
Spur Gear. The D.C generator used in this
project is Permanent Magnet D.C generator.
Fly wheels is also used in order to have

The Output of the generator is 12

Volts. This 12 Volt is stored in a lead acid

battery (7 Amp-Hour). The battery is
connected to the inverter which is used to
convert the D.C to A.C volts. By increasing
the capacity of battery and inverter circuit, the
power rating is increased. This power can be
used to run a bulb or fan.
2. NEED FOR NON-CONVENTIONAL ENERGY:

In a survey it has been stated that by 2020 fuel

scarcity will be maximum and the countries
like India may not have the chance to use
petroleum product. India has only about 25
years of oil reserves and 75 100 years of coal
reserves. So we have to reduce the usage of
coal to generate electricity instead of that we
have to use other resources to generate
electricity. Since electrical energy is
considered to be the one of the fundamental
need for the survival of mankind. Since
increase in the standard of living is directly
proportional to energy consumption. The price
of the oil, gases is also increasing and also it
causes serious environmental problems. so we
have to go for the non conventional method of
energy generation.
3. HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:

Staircase arrangement

Rack and pinion

Chain sprocket arrangement

Spur gear

D.C generator (Permanent magnet)

Battery (Lead-acid battery)

Inverter and its controls

Light load

4.1. Rack and Pinion Arrangement:

Rack & pinion arrangement is used inorder t

o convert the linear motion of the inclined step to
rotational movement of theshaft. The rack is
connected to the inclined step and pinion gear is
connected to the shaft
through keys. Pinion the circular gear and rackis the l
inear gear.
Both this are made up of castiron.

conclude that, as the weight of the individual

who uses the staircase increases the output
voltage also increases. And also the power
generation will be higher if the staircase has
been used for more number of times. So if this
type of staircase is placed in the crowded
region more power generation will be there.
