In Britains Seven-Way
Pre-Election Debate
RR By Jill Lawless

BRITAINS economy may

be growing, but the main
televised leaders debate
of its election was held in
the shadow of the Great
Recession.

The economy, and the economic

effects of immigration, dominated a
showdown between Conservative Prime
Minister David Cameron and six rivals:
Labour Party leader Ed Miliband and
chiefs of the centrist Liberal Democrats,
right-wing UK Independence Party,
Welsh and Scottish nationalists and
Greens.

Britains political landscape is at its

most fragmented in decades, and polls
suggest no party will get a parliamentary
majority on May 7. So the two-hour
debate saw all the leaders battling for
an edge.
Amid the clamor, some themes
emerged:
ITS ALL ABOUT THE ECONOMY
Whether the topic was health care,
education, or immigration, the debate
circled back to money.
Britains economy suffered for years
after the 2008 global financial crisis, and
Cameron urged voters to keep to the
budget-cutting course set by his government since 2010.
Five years ago this country was on
the brink, Cameron said, arguing that
his governments billions in spending
cuts had reduced the deficit, stimu-

economy around. Lets stick to the plan
thats working.
Miliband countered that Britain succeeds when working people succeed, but
thats not the way its been for the last
five years. He said left-leaning Labour
would raise the minimum wage and cut
tuition fees, but still reduce the deficit
by taxing expensive homes and clamping
down on tax avoidance.
Nick Clegg painted his Liberal Democrats, who have governed in coalition
with Camerons Tories, as the ideal
middle way, a Goldilocks party: Well
cut less than the Conservatives and well
borrow less than Labour.
Immigration is one of the most divisive issues in the campaign, driven to
the top of the political agenda by UKIP,
which wants to leave the European

Lets take back control of our borders, said UKIP leader Nigel Farage,
who brought up the issue repeatedly.
CHALLENGED
He made his case forcefully, but was
challenged by the others for what they
characterized as a simplistic obsession
with immigration.
There isnt anything that Nigel Farage wont blame on foreigners, said
the Scottish National Partys Nicola
Sturgeon.
Leanne Wood of Welsh nationalist
party Plaid Cymru got applause when
she challenged Farage after he said that
HIV-positive foreigners were costing the
health service a packet.

RRMadeleine McCanns Parents

Win Portuguese Libel Case

LISBON, Portugal The parents of

missing British girl Madeleine McCann
have won 500,000 euros in a libel action
against a former Portuguese detective
who published a book alleging they
were involved in their daughters disappearance, according to a Lisbon court
ruling published April 28.
The McCanns were seeking 1.2
million euros in damages from Goncalo
Amaral, who was part of the police investigation into Madeleines disappearance from a vacation home in Portugals
Algarve region in May 2007, days before
her fourth birthday.
The court decided to award 250,000
euros each to Kate and Gerry McCann,
but didnt grant the other claims. It
said Kate and Gerry were totally destroyed and depressed by Amarals
allegations and felt ashamed that they
might appear to have been to blame for
their daughters disappearance. They
say Madeleine was abducted.
Amaral argued in his defense that
his claims stemmed from the police
investigation and that Portuguese media had already reported the possibility
that they might have played a role in
Madeleines disappearance.
The 52-page ruling, handed down
last month, also prohibited the sale of
Amarals 2008 book The Truth of the Lie.

RRBritish Couple Win A Million

In Lottery For Second Time

A COUPLE from northern England has

defied the odds again by winning
1m in the lottery for a second time.
David and Kathleen Long won the
money and a car in the EuroMillions
Mega Draw, having already scooped up
1m in 2013.
Lottery operator Camelot said
last month the couple beat odds of
283bn-to-1.
David Long says he played his usual
numbers and watched in amazement
as they came up. His wife, Kathleen,
had to verify them. Since then, its all
been a blur.
The retired truck driver says the
win means hell probably take his wife
on a cruise as hes run out of excuses
not to go now. A party is also planned.

RRCampaigner Of Rare
Premature Aging Condition
Dies At 17

A CAMPAIGNER
who raised awareness of the rare genetic condition progeria, which causes
those affected to age
about eight times
faster than average, has died at age 17.
The US-based Progeria Research
Foundation said Hayley Okines, from
East Sussex in England, died April 2 at
her home. It didnt provide more details.
The groups executive director
Audrey Gordon praised Okines for her
participation in drug trials and research
that helped make progress toward
treatment for the condition. Hundreds
of tributes also poured into the groups
website celebrating Okines life.
Okines published her autobiography, Old Before My Time, at 14, detailing her unusual life.
The Progeria Research Foundation says the condition affects about
one-in-four million to eight million
newborns. Those affected die at an
average age of 14.

British Companies Enjoy April

Fools Day Just Like The Rest

PROBABLY the most memorable and famous

April Fools Day joke on British TV was the
1957 BBC broadcast of spaghetti trees
being harvested in southern Switzerland.
But, last month, on the big day, a couple
of companies took the general British public
for a ride as we write.
The animal charity Cats Protection took
in some of their customers with their announcement that the toilets at their office
centres were being replaced with human
litter trays.
Manager Bill Ditnow joked: Encouraging
our people to use litter trays will help us get
in touch with the feelings of cats.
Then, Costa Coffee broadcast they would
be providing Ostrich-shaped pillows in their
stores. Claiming to be inspired by other
large firms such as Google and Nike who
provide areas for their employees to take 40
winks, the coffee company were offering 15
minute naps on their bird-inspired, life-sized
cushions.
But a larger stink was made by Formans Smoked Salmon & Lemon Zest, who
told customers they were launching a new
perfume based on their regular product.
Named Pongy the perfume was to be
sold online, and would be available in just
a few months.

Cheese On Toast Lovers Better

People, And Have More Sex

A SURVEY last month suggests that those

who enjoy cheese on toast on a regular
basis seem to lead better lives than others
in many areas.
Cheese and sex lives were featured in

just two questions that were posed to 4,600

people by the dating and social network
site Skout.
The responses showed that 32 percent
of people who enjoyed cheese on toast had
sex a minimum of six times a month, while
those who didnt like the dish only chalked
up 27 percent only showed similar numbers.
Other positive sides to cheese on toast
lovers were that they: were nicer, more interesting people, travelled more, and were more
generous, according to the survey results.
Of the cheese on toast lovers 81 percent
also said they had donated time, money or
food to those in need. That number was 66
percent for those that disliked the dish.
The site didnt say whether if someone
took up to eating cheese on toast that these
wonderful attributes would inhabit them.

Non April Fools Joke By Royal Mail

Sees Comedy Faces On Stamps

APRIL FOOLS DAY took on a surreal state this year when, in a non-joke move the Royal
Mail launched a set of stamps that were funny in their own right!
The stamps featuring Britains funniest and most popular comedy acts, pictured
the likes of: Norman Wisdom, Spike Milligan, Victoria Wood, and The Two Ronnies.
The First Class stamps are themed around the tradition of stand-up and sketch
shows, dating back from the 1940s.
Morecambe and Wise, Lenny Henry, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, French and
Saunders and Monty Python were also featured.
Andrew Hammond, head of stamps at Royal Mail, said: For decades, the UK has
long boasted some of the most influential and significant comedy talent in the world.
This set of stamps rightly pays tribute to the comedians who have made the nation
laugh out loud at their ground-breaking comedy genius.
Royal Mail also issued a special postmark to mark the new issue, while post vans in
locations with strong links to the comedians featured an image of the relevant stamp.

One could suggest a terrorist attack, the
other a Geordies lunch.
As it turned out, fortunately the 58-yearold actor was carrying tubs of his favourite
dish, and he nor his dish was a threat to
passengers on the Gatwick-bound flight.
The man even offered for the security staff
to taste his delicacy (mashed split yellow
peas). The man, who wished to stay anonymous, said: I love my pease pudding, and
added I think the resemblance to Semtex
was pushing it a bit far as it was in containers

But I did have six tubs to take back down
south with me I told them that they could
taste it if they wanted to. I was very glad that
they allowed me to keep them in the end. It
is quite hard to get your hands on pease
pudding down south.
A spokeswoman for Newcastle Airport
said they did not comment on security
matters.

Playing In Socks At
World Championships

WITH ITS players donning waistcoats, bow

ties, and trousers for matches, snooker
prides itself on being one of the smartest
sports around.
Ronnie OSullivan briefly shattered that
image at the world championship.
OSullivan, a five-time world champion and snookers biggest box-office draw,
caused a stir in his first-round match at the
Crucible Theatre when he removed a new pair
of shoes that were giving him discomfort,
and started playing in his socks.
However, that was in breach of the dress
code, and OSullivan ended up borrowing
shoes from the tournament director.
I got a pair of Mike Ganleys stinky old
shoes, OSullivan said after the game. And
you know what? They felt great.
Officials at the World Professional Billiards
and Snooker Association are considering
whether OSullivan should be handed a small
fine for a breach of dress code. Rules state
that players must ensure they dress in smart
and appropriate fashion.
OSullivan said he lost his old pair of shoes
after leaving them in a hotel, forcing him to
buy some more.
I just bought the wrong pair, basically,
OSullivan said. They were bashing my
feet and I had to take them off. I couldnt
wear them.
OSullivan won the match 10-3 against
Craig Steadman to reach the second round.

There are many raised eyebrows as Tom

Being a former fairground operator served

Hole In Pavement Claims Two

Victims Before Council
Cordon Off Area

ALL WAS business-as-usual at the caf on

North End Road in Fulham until a lady with
a shopping trolley disappeared down a hole
that had earlier appeared in the pavement.
As soon as the bizarre incident happened
emergency services were called to the
London caf.
Witnesses said they heard a loud scream
and saw the woman had stumbled into the
three-foot-wide hole.
Apparently a man had twisted his ankle
after stumbling over the same hole not long
before. The area around the hole had then
been blocked off with tables and chairs, in an
attempt to stop people walking into it, nearby
market stall holders said. But, the woman,
40, was said to have squeezed between
the obstacles with her shopping trolley and
ignored warning calls from caf staff before
falling into the hole.
The caf owner said he helped the woman
through the basement under the cafe and she
walked back up via the stairs.
The woman was taken to hospital but was
not seriously injured.
Council staff have now cordoned off
the area.

A Fond Farewell To Stewart Quentin Holmes

STEWART QUENTIN HOLMES joined the
Union Jack Newspaper as our London Correspondent in 1982, the year of the launch
of our newspaper. Since then Stewart has
written nearly 400 London Life columns,
his work residing on this page every month.
Regular readers have enjoyed Stewarts
coverage of goings on in one of the worlds
greatest cities. Many of us could imagine
him writing by the illumination of a dim light,
amidst a light fog of pipe smoke in his home
of many years on Baker Street actually

For a long time Stewart has portrayed
the great detective himself at the Sherlock

in the capital. (photo at right)
It is with great sadness that we announce

My

I BEGAN my journalistic career in the 1950s

on two local newspapers (the Harrow Observer and the Hendon Times) followed by a
five-year stint at Reuters news agency. There,
I took a telephone call from our Moscow
correspondent Sidney Wieland giving us
the exclusive story of the emergence from
obscurity of the two Russian spies, Burgess
and Maclean. It was an historic moment.
Later came an assignment to Teheran,
Iran, where I joined the staff of the Englishlanguage newspaper, Teheran Journal, as
a reporter.
It was a busy time of year. The world was
concerned with the price of oil, and talks were
planned for a meeting in Teheran.
I was sitting at my desk and typing a story
when suddenly I was lifted, desk and all, to
the other side of the room. I wondered what
was happening until I discovered that we
had just been involved in a minor earthquake.
Id never been in an earthquake before I
suppose you could say that it was an earthshattering experience!
So, I decided to call the BBC, to whom I
had previously offered my services as correspondent, and reported the minor quake
with no reports of anyone being hurt and no
damage to buildings.
AMUSED
I ended my story with: It reminds me of
the recent contest at The Times to see who
could write the most boring headline. The
winner was: Small earthquake in Peru; few
hurt. This quite amused their Foreign Editor,
Peter Watson, who agreed to appoint me as
their correspondent. I had written to several
other newspapers to inform them of my trip
to Teheran, and to my amazement they all
replied positively. I then found myself as
correspondent to the BBC plus six different
publications Daily Telegraph, The Times,
Daily Sketch, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail and
The Daily Express. Fortunately, our office
possessed a teleprompter machine so I was
able to send a story seven times!
While all this was going on, I was able
to tread the boards and show my acting
abilities off. I was chosen to play the lead in
Molieres play The Miser at the Iran-America
Society, which I am happy to say was quite
successful. I still dont know how I managed
to do all these things at once.
My sojourn in Teheran was short lived.
It was the year of Teherans Centenary celebrations, and Heads of State throughout the
world were invited to join in. Unfortunately,
the Shah of Iran was spending so much

money on these celebrations in spite of the

fact that there was a drought in the south
and other hardships being suffered by the
population. I commented on this in a radio
programme and apparently this was taken
as an insult to the Shah. I was telephoned
by the Foreign Minister and asked to repeat
exactly what I had said.
EXPELLED
The next day I was summoned to the Ministry and informed that I was being expelled. A
jeep was made available in which I was driven
around town to collect my laundry, close
my bank account, then unceremoniously
dumped at Teherans Mehrabad Airport
to await the next plane out of the country,
which was going to Turkey. It was now early
evening, but the next plane was not due until
the following morning. I spent the night on
an airport bench.
Fortunately, I was greeted in Ankara by
another BBC correspondent, whose name I
regret to say that I have forgotten, but who
arranged for me to have an official Press
Card which entitled me to all sorts of things,
enticed me to
stay but,
it was time
for me to go
home.
Back home
my acting career improved.
I appeared in
television programmes such
as I Claudius,
Rumpole Of
The Bailey,
Edward & Mrs
Simpson, The Rise & Fall Of Reginald
Perrin and many others which I no longer
remember.
HONG KONG
At this time I saw an advertisement for
sub-editors in Hong Kong.
I spent my first night in Hong Kong fighting
seven cockroaches. Next morning I asked the
hotel manager for another room.
I was working for the China Mail, which
involved reaching the office at seven oclock
in the morning, which didnt suit me at all, so I
switched to a morning newspaper the Hong
Kong Standard where I became Features
Editor for a period.
I believe that it was Korean Airlines which
advertised round the world trips, visiting all
the places Ive always wanted to go to, one of

espeare
k
a
h

which was Japan, another the United States.

TOKYO
I arrived at Tokyo minus luggage which
as I had fully expected had been routed
elsewhere. When I reported it to airline officials, one said You dont seem very unhappy
about it. I replied: This is exactly what I
expected. things havent changed today
have they?
So, I was without luggage, no money,
nowhere to go. What would you have done? I
found the offices of Korean Airlines, explained
my situation to a very kind Japanese gentleman, who not only loaned me 10,000 yen, but
also arranged for me to stay at the best hotel
in town for one night, with three free meals.
Im happy to say that by the time I left
Tokyo I was able to repay him in full. Through
the Tokyo Press Club I was able to find a
gentleman who had a room to spare, and
a job at the Mainichi Daily News as a film
critic, watching films with Japanese dialogue
but English sub-titles. I could stay for only
a month, as I was keen to use my visa for
the States.
UNITED STATES
I managed to get a US visa which enabled
me to travel to many places in the States for
a lump sum I think it was $500.
My first stop was Hawaii, where things
were expensive, but I managed to find an
agent who sent me for an audition for the TV
series Hawaii Five-O, which I passed, and
was told whenever they needed an English
actor, I was it. I continued my trip, to Los
Angeles, where I met my first Dr Watson
(Jerry Watson, also a regular writer for UJ)
and his girlfriend Leila.
After a pleasant stay in Los Angeles, it was
time to go home.
LONDON
Back in London, Watson and I had had
a great time covering the social scene. We
covered parties, first nights, film premieres,
royal functions, and virtually every social
occasion. We worked mainly for the Evening
Standards In London Last Night column,
for which we managed to get the lead story
almost every night.
Its 1982 my first Dr Watson, who had by
then returned to Los Angeles, told me of a
new publication called the Union Jack and
suggests that I might become their London
correspondent. Their Editor, Ron Choularton,
who started the paper with his brother Jeff,
agreed. I have been writing their London Life
column for 33 years, until unfortunately I am
now retiring.
SHERLOCK HOLMES MUSEUM
The year 1990 saw the opening of the
Sherlock Holmes Museum in Baker Street,
north-west London. I interviewed the owner,
John Aidiniantz, from Armenia. He said that
he was looking for a Sherlock Holmes character and I said: Youve just found one. I
played Sherlock Holmes for the next 25 years.
I was joined by the present Dr Watson (John
Barrett) in 1993. We had many adventures,
notably our trip on Eurostar to Meiringen,
Switzerland, where we followed in the footsteps of the fictional Holmes & Watson to

By Police Over Tabloid
Phone Hacking
RR By Jill Lawless

triggered by the 2011 revelation that

employees of Rupert Murdochs News
of the World listened to the voicemails
of politicians, celebrities and even crime
victims in a quest for scoops.
Since then, police investigations,
criminal trials and a public inquiry have
revealed that phone hacking was widespread at Britains tabloids more than a
decade ago. Former News of the World
editor Andy Coulson was sentenced last
year to 18 months in jail for hacking that
went on when he was in charge.
Murdochs News Corp and Mirror
Group Newspapers two of Britains
main tabloid publishers have admitted
hacking and paid millions in compensation to victims.
Judge Brian Leveson, who led the
phone-hacking inquiry, called Morgans
claim that he had no knowledge of the
practice utterly unpersuasive.
Morgan was fired by the Daily Mirror
in 2004 after the newspaper ran pictures
claiming to show British soldiers abusing
Iraqi prisoners which were discovered to
be fakes. He hosted an interview show on
CNN between 2011 and 2014.

FORMER CNN host Piers Morgan was

questioned for a second time by British
police last month about tabloid phone
hacking.
Morgan, who edited Britains Daily
Mirror newspaper between 1995 and
2004, said he attended a voluntary interview with detectives.
As this is an ongoing investigation,
I am unable to comment further until
its conclusion, he said in a statement.
Londons Metropolitan Police said a
50-year-old man was interviewed under
caution ... in connection with suspected
conspiracy to intercept telephone voicemails.
Under caution means Morgan was
not arrested, but the interview was
recorded and could be used in future
prosecutions
Morgan, 50, was previously questioned by police investigating hacking
in December 2013.
He has denied knowing that reporters
were eavesdropping on mobile-phone
voicemails when he was an editor.

Britains Seven-Way Election Debate
after shouting at Cameron about the
plight of homeless veterans.
There was some disquiet among the
press because ITV excluded photographers from news organizations from the
event, offering only handout photos from
its own photographer.
Debates, a relatively new phenomenon in British politics, can transform a
campaign. Cleggs shining performance
in 2010 sparked a wave of Clegg-mania
that sent his poll ratings soaring. On
polling day the party took a quarter of
votes, and Clegg became deputy prime
minister.
But Britains first-past-the post electoral system makes it hard to translate
popularity into seats in the House of
Commons. Cleggs Lib Dems won more
votes in 2010 than in the previous election, but still ended up with fewer seats
though they still held the balance of
power in a divided Commons

is dangerous, she said. I think you
should be ashamed of yourself.
NO FLUBS, NO FIREWORKS
No one made a disastrous gaffe, and all
the leaders can claim to have achieved at
least some of their goals.
Cameron largely avoided unstatesmanlike bickering. Miliband, often criticized as cerebral and awkward, delivered
his points clearly. Farage, easily the
noisiest participant, made his anti-EU
views and what he called UKIPs plainspoken patriotism heard loud and clear.
Sturgeon of the Scottish nationalists
and Wood of Plaid Cymru (the Party of
Wales) both potential kingmakers if
the election result is close appealed
to their home constituencies and held
their own on wider issues. And Natalie
Bennett of the Green Party outlined a set
of alternative-sounding policies on issues
beyond the environment.
The debate shows that British politics, sometimes characterized as male,
pale and stale, is getting more diverse.
Three of the seven leaders were women.
But their parties the Greens, SNP and
Plaid Cymru had 10 seats between
them in the House of Commons before
the election, out of 650. The four parties
led by men had a total of 616.
The debate on the ITV network ran
smoothly, though a heckler was ejected

FOOTBALL GROUND BLAZE KILLED 56

Police Will Consider Fresh

Evidence Into 1985 Bradford Fire

THE CIRCUMSTANCES surrounding one of Englands worst

sporting disasters could be reexamined following allegations
that the fire at a soccer stadium
which killed 56 people in 1985
may have been started deliberately.

A newly published book, written by a

man who escaped the blaze at Bradford
Citys Valley Parade stadium, says it was
one of nine fires at businesses owned
by or associated with the clubs thenchairman.
The jury at an inquest into the Valley
Parade tragedy found that the fire was
probably accidental, caused by a cigarette that was dropped through a gap in
the floorboards of the wooden stand and
landed on litter below.
Should any evidence come to light
which was not available to Her Majestys
Coroner at the original inquest, then we
will consider its significance and take appropriate action, West Yorkshire Police
detective superintendent Mark Ridley
said in a statement last month.
The judge who conducted the inquest
three weeks after the fire said last month
the number of blazes linked to Stafford
Heginbotham, who died in 1995, was
remarkable and has called for police
to look to reopen their inquiries, even

though he stands by his original ruling.

I dont think its going to affect what
we decided but I think it is important
from a public point of view that the
police look at the other fires and see
if there was anything sinister, Oliver
Popplewell told Sky News. I think its
important to satisfy peoples minds that
the other fires are unconnected.
JUSTICE
The British politician who was one
of the leading campaigners for justice
from the Hillsborough Stadium disaster
in 1989, when 96 Liverpool fans were
crushed to death during an FA Cup
semifinal match, has also called for a new
investigation.
These are allegations of the most
serious kind, and if a bereaved family
member feels that they need to be investigated then they should be, Andy
Burnham of the Labour party told The
Guardian. I have always felt that the
original Popplewell inquiry was conducted with undue haste, and there is
a concern that these matters were not
thoroughly looked into at the time.
Authorities initially characterized the
Hillsborough disaster as a result of hooliganism but the original accidental death
verdicts were overturned after years of
campaigning by the victims families,
with documents showing a cover-up by
police. New inquests into the fatalities
are currently being held.

Manchester Airport Disrupted After Report Of Drone

FLIGHTS have been briefly disrupted
at Britains Manchester Airport after
reports of a drone in the area.
The airport said some departing
flights were delayed and a few incoming
aircraft diverted April 20 while a police
helicopter inspected the reports. No

drone was found.

The airport says one of its two runways was closed for about 20 minutes.
Drones are an increasingly common
nuisance to commercial aircraft.
An official report last year disclosed
that a device believed to be a drone

Martin Fletcher, the author of FiftySix The Story Of The Bradford Fire, lost
his brother, father, uncle and grandfather
in the fire. He has spent the last 15 years
investigating what happened.
Fletcher claims in the book that there
were eight fires at business premises
owned by or connected to Heginbotham
in the 18 years before the Bradford City
tragedy. According to Fletcher, the
Valley Parade fire came at a time when
Heginbotham was in financial trouble
and he had learned two days before the
fire that it would cost 2m to bring the
ground up to safety standards required
by Bradfords promotion from the third
tier that season.
UNLUCKY
Could any man really be as unlucky
as Heginbotham had been? Fletcher
asks in the book.
Bradford co-chairman Mark Lawn said
he finds it hard to believe that the fire was
started on purpose.
I feel for the person who has written
this book as he has lost his whole family
in the fire, Lawn said, but Im not sure
you can start blaming someone who is
dead without having proof.
The 30th anniversary of the fire is on
May 11. There was a minutes silence
before all English league matches on the
weekend of April 25-26 coinciding with
Bradfords last home game of the season
to mark the anniversary.

Charles And Camilla Mark

10th Wedding Anniversary

RR By Jill Lawless

THE HEIR to the British throne and his

consort, Camilla, are celebrating 10 years
of marriage a decade in which Camillas
public image has gone from aristocratic
home-wrecker to admired addition to the
royal family.
Prince Charles, 66, and 67-year-old
Camilla marked the April 9 anniversary
privately at the royals Balmoral estate
in Scotland. Its a favorite retreat where
the couple can spend time fishing, walking and painting.
They married on April 9, 2005, in
a modest town-hall ceremony lacking
the pageantry of Charles 1981 wedding
to Princess Diana an extravaganza
watched by millions around the world.
In 2005, many Britons were cool to
a woman some blamed for the failure
of Charles and Dianas marriage. But
since then Camillas charity work and
down-to-earth humor have made her a
popular figure.

A look at the woman who

may be queen:
A LONG ROMANCE
Charles met Camilla Shand in the
early 1970s, and the pair bonded over a
shared sense of humor and love of rural
life. But he sailed off with the Royal Navy
without cementing their relationship; in
his absence she married Andrew Parker
Bowles.
Charles went on to marry 20-year-old
Diana Spencer, a union whose fairytale
image could not survive real life.
Within a few years, Charles had
resumed his relationship with Camilla.
There were three of us in that marriage, Diana said later although she
acknowledged affairs of her own.
Many Britons took Dianas view, vilifying Camilla as a royal home-wrecker.
Charles and Diana separated in 1992 and
divorced in 1996.
Camillas first marriage also ended in
divorce. After Dianas death in a 1997
car crash, Charles and Camilla cautiously
began making their relationship public.
Their first public appearance together
came in 1999, the first public kiss in 2001.
Finally a wedding date was set April
8, 2005.

In answer to a Ladys
enquiring whether he ever
ate vegetables. Yes Madam,
I once ate a pea
Beau Brumell, 1778-1840

But there was one more delay. The

wedding was postponed for a day so it
would not conflict with the funeral of
Pope John Paul II.
A LOW-KEY WEDDING
Britain had never seen a royal wedding
like it: the simple civil marriage of two
50-something divorcees.
Charles and Camilla wed at the town
hall in Windsor, near London, just down
the street from Windsor Castle.
The bride wore a cream silk chiffon
dress and matching coat, with a lacetrimmed straw hat. The groom was in
formal morning wear. There were 30
guests, including Charles and Dianas
sons, William and Harry.
A blessing ceremony at the castles
St Georges Chapel was attended by 800
people, including the grooms mother
Queen Elizabeth II, then-Prime Minister
Tony Blair and comedian Joan Rivers.
There werent the throngs that packed
Londons streets in 1981, but the nuptials
still drew thousands to Windsor. When
the newlyweds emerged offering
waves, but no public kiss there were
a few boos from Diana die-hards, but
mostly loud cheers. One banner in the
crowd read: Let he who is without sin
cast the first stone.
In deference to Diana and public sentiment, it was decided that Camilla would

not become Princess of Wales. She took

the title Duchess of Cornwall instead.
HER OWN WOMAN
Over the years, many Britons came to
see Camilla as a breath of fresh air in the
sometimes stuffy royal family. A lover of
dogs, horses, gardening and the British
countryside, she has a hearty laugh and
a self-deprecating streak, and is a busy
charity campaigner for causes including
literacy and osteoporosis, which afflicted
both her mother and her grandmother.
Royal author Penny Junor said Camilla
had never been drawn to the perks and
pomp of royal life.
Shes never had any ambition for herself, Junor said. She didnt want to be a
princess or a duchess. She just happened
to love a man who was the Prince of
Wales, and look at the fuss that caused.
A decade ago, opinion polls suggested
a large majority of Britons opposed the
duchess becoming Queen Camilla if
Charles takes the throne, though that
attitude has now softened. Camilla has
said she wishes to be known as Princess
Consort rather than queen.
Her friend, novelist Jilly Cooper, said
the royal consort was great fun and
very kind.
I think by being brave and behaving
beautifully shes done brilliantly. The
public have come to love her.

GROWING UP in post war England in the

50s, we still had food rationing and because of that almost everyone would grow
their own vegetables, and even though we
travelled due to my RAF Dad, we always
had a garden. I must say that the turnip
was always one of my least favourite vegetables, however in recent years I have
liked it served certain ways other than just
boiled up and mashed. Although turnips
are root vegetables, they are also related
to the cabbage family, and were probably
brought to Britain by the Romans. They
are closely related to Swedes which were
used more in the 1700s. And due to its
easy growing was probably a staple for
the poor, and started being called Swede
Turnips. Generally though they are usually
called a turnip further north England, and
Swede in the south
In Ireland it was introduced as cattle feed,
but during the potato famine, turnips were
often substituted and became popular, then
later when potatoes could be grown again,
they were often were both cooked together.
In Wales, they have a dish called punchnep, a combination of creamed potatoes
and turnips, whipped to a smooth puree.
However in Scotland, turnips are referred
to as neeps and served with tatties

(potatoes), one version is called Clapshot,

and basically is equal amounts of potatoes
and turnips, boiled together, drained and
mashed, and then seasoned with salt and
pepper, and butter, with chopped chives.
Another really nice variation is called
Rumbledethumps I will admit I was
drawn more to the name, but it is a really
nice dish, nice served with a roast. I am
looking more into a Vegetarian diet since
my daughter become a Vegetarian, and
it has pleased me how dishes are really
good without meat too! If anyone knows
how the name of this dish came about, I
would be interested in learning. Im sure
it will be Scottish!
I hope you like my version, it can be
made up ahead of serving time and then just
reheated. It does call for Savoy cabbage if
you can get it, but for those of you who like
Kale, that could be a good substitute. I really
dislike Kale so I would use just regular cabbage instead, or indeed maybe spinach!?

Rumbledethumps

8-10 medium to large potatoes (I would

use Idaho potatoes)
1 large Turnip/Swede/Neep
1/2 stick (4oz) of butter
1 small Savoy cabbage, finely sliced
Salt and pepper
1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
Peel and chop the potatoes and neeps,
and boil them together in a large pan with
salted water until tender, about 20-30
minutes. Preheat oven to 350F. Drain the
vegetables well, then return them to the pan,
and shake over a low heat to be sure they
are dried completely. Heat half of the butter
in another pan, add the cabbage and cook
until just tender about 3-4 minutes. Add the
potatoes and turnip and remaining butter
into the pan with the cabbage. Roughly
mash them all together, not too smoothly
you want some chunks. Season to taste
with salt and pepper, tip all into an ovenproof
dish, top with the cheese and bake about 30
minutes. Yield 8 servings

Newport County Player Jailed For Robbery And Assault

AN ENGLISH soccer player has been

sent to jail for four years and four months
for robbery and assault.
Chris Zebroski, a 28-year-old striker
for Newport County in Englands fourth
tier, was sentenced last month at a court
in Swindon, England, after admitting to

four charges of robbery, attempted robbery and assault.

Newport has terminated Zebroskis
contract, saying the club does not
condone any of the actions for which
Zebroski has been found guilty and has
been left with no other option.

Apocalypse Soon?

IT IS A week now to the General Election and

there is still no clear sign of an emerging
winner. Politics in the past five years has
been very confusing and the end-game is
no less so.
The deal done in 2010 between David
Cameron for the Conservative majority and
Nick Clegg for the Liberal Democrats never
looked remotely permanent. So to avoid either
side ratting on the other, the Coalition Government quickly came up with some legislative
super glue. They ordained that for the first
time in British history, the parliament would
last for five years whatever happened.
Hitherto, the Prime Minister of the day
always had the freedom to seek a new
mandate whenever it suited him or her.
This meant that a government nearly always
went early, invariably to take advantage of a
favourable economic or political situation.
In my lifetime, only one PM miscalculated
badly. This was Edward Heath back in 1974
who went to the country to ask whether he
had the right to rule when the miners strikes
were causing power cuts and three-day
working weeks.
The people gave Harold Wilson a paperthin majority (much to his surprise) which
he increased marginally in 1976. Jim Callaghan took over and managed to stagger
on in power for three more years before Mrs
Thatcher stormed in and secured 18 years
of Tory government. I dont think its an
exaggeration to say that Maggie made the
miners pay, albeit ten years late, and inflicted
a fearful revenge on mining communities
across the nation.
The Liberal Democrats today are paying
a high price for doing the opposite of the
miners supporting a Tory Prime Minister.
They could have chosen to lend their votes
on a supply and demand basis but opted for
a share of power. Now they claim a large
measure of success in getting more money
for education and taking lower-paid earners
out of income tax. Perversely, the electorate
ungratefully remember them simply as the
party which broke their promise to not to
introduce university tuition fees.
Their justification for working in a coalition
was to rescue the countrys finances which
they and the Conservatives argued had been
ruined by the Labour Government of Gordon
Brown. Repeated often enough, the claim
sounds plausible were it not for the fact that
the financial crisis of 2008 had its roots in the
failure of the US sub-prime mortgage market.
This alleged incompetence of Gordon
Brown and his men, Ed Miliband amongst
them, has forced the Chancellor, George
Osborne, to make deep cuts in public expenditure in five years of austerity. The deeper
the cuts, the more blame can be heaped upon
the financial shortcomings of the last Labour

Police Expand Investigation

Of Child Sex Abuse Cover Up
BRITAINS police watchdog says it is
expanding its probe into claims that
police officers covered up allegations of
child abuse.
The Independent Police Complaints
Commission says it is looking into three
new claims of police corruption related
to child sex offenses from the 1970s to
the 2000s.
One complaint alleged that police
gathered evidence in an investigation into
alleged abuses committed by lawmakers,
judges, clergy and actors, but dropped it
two months later.

Government.
The deeper the
cuts, the harder
life has got and
the worse Gordon
Browns management of the economy
must have been. It is
a neat political trick.
Look, says Osborne, dont blame
me for the mess
were in. They did it and were having to put
it right. It is ironic that smaller government
is a Conservative aim and is in the process
of being realised.
There are two other factors which make
the outcome of this election hard to predict.
The more significant of these surely is the
emergence of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) under its charismatic
leader, Nigel Farage.
He has the gift of appearing two things
simultaneously a man of the people and an
innocent abroad. Thus he can stand outside
politics, claiming to be astonished at the
simplicity of the answers to complicated
questions and at the stupidity of the established political parties not to see the answer.
The answer is to get out of Europe.
Farage has the charm and disingenuousness of Nick Clegg though the latters
influence on the last election was only felt
at the last minute during the TV debates
and consequently had a limited effect upon
the vote. UKIP has been around for longer,
unsurprisingly growing at exactly the same
pace as the Liberal Democrats popularity
was collapsing. Their support reached its
height in the European elections last year
when it attracted over four million votes, the
largest single party with the largest number
of Euro MPs.
It is a truth of politics that if you can
mobilise the protest vote, you can enjoy
startling success. During my lifetime, the

Liberals have profited from this phenomenon.

Now it is UKIP.
There has been some opinion poll evidence in the last few weeks that Farages
support is ebbing away as it has been rocked
by scandal but in a race as tight as this, his
ability to poach votes may be randomly
critical. Look out for the result from Thanet:
Farage must win that seat or he has promised
to stand down from the UKIP leadership.
Since his is a one-man band, that would spell
the end of UKIP.
The other factor that has muddied the
electoral waters is the inexorable rise of Scottish nationalism or, to be more precise, of the
SNP leaders: initially Alex Salmond and more
recently his successor, Nicola Sturgeon.
Ms Sturgeon was an impressive winner
in the TV debates. I apologise for a sexist
remark but the woman is glamorous and has
a certain charm that comes across well on the
box. She has the disingenuousness of Nick
Clegg and Nigel Farage and like those two
men she provides the simplest of responses
to the most complex questions. The answer
is Scottish independence.
This approach looks guaranteed to garner heavy electoral gains at the expense of
Labour, dozens of seats falling to SNP and
possibly giving them the balance of power in
Westminster. Despite losing the referendum
vote by 45% to 55% and stating that this was
a once in a generation occasion, it is plain that
Sturgeon clearly wants another referendum
and probably within five years.
And it is referendums coupled with the rise
of Ukip and the SNP that make this election
such a crucial one, without doubt the most
important since the war. Should those two
parties poll heavily, it is possible to see where
the UK will be in ten years time: a loose
association of England, Wales and Northern
Ireland standing outside the European Union
looking in.
It is a desperate thought.

Politician With Dementia

Spared Sex Crime Charges
PROSECUTORS announced last month that
they wont charge a former
lawmaker with alleged sex
crimes against children because the 86-year-old politician has severe dementia.
Police and victims of
child abuse expressed anger at the decision not to
prosecute Greville Janner over alleged offenses
against boys several decades ago.
The Crown Prosecution
Service said more than a
dozen people had accused
Janner of abusing them
during the 1960s, 1970s
and 1980s. Most were boys

London DiamondDistrict Heist Gang
RR By Jill Lawless

THE GANG members, dressed in

fluorescent vests and hard hats, calmly
carried bags and wheeled garbage bins
into a high-security storage facility in
Londons diamond district.
After two nights of work, they left
with the contents of dozens of safedeposit boxes, in a methodical heist that
has fascinated Britain and put police on
the defensive.
The Daily Mirror newspaper April
11 published surveillance-camera images showing the thieves in action. The
footage shows several men, their faces
covered with dust masks, entering and
leaving the building repeatedly over the
Easter weekend.
Londons Metropolitan Police said detectives had obtained the footage before
the newspaper published it. The
same day the force released still
images of what it called three
highly audacious suspects.
Detective chief inspector
Paul Johnson said the burglars
entered the building late on
Thursday, April 2 and left the
next morning. They returned on
the Saturday night and left Easter
Sunday morning.
DRILLED
They climbed down an elevator shaft
and drilled through concrete walls sixfeet thick into the vault. They stole the
contents of 72 safety deposit boxes,
which are used by many local dealers to
store jewelry.
Police have not disclosed the value of
the stolen goods.
The force has acknowledged that
a burglar alarm at the Hatton Garden
Safe Deposit facility was triggered just
after midnight on April 3, the start of
the holiday weekend, but no one was
sent to check on it. The crime was not
discovered until businesses reopened on
Tuesday, April 7.

John OConnor, former head of Scotland Yards armed-robbery squad, told

the BBC that the thieves appeared professional and well-prepared, but police
had been utterly incompetent in not
answering the alarm call.
REVELLED
Britain has a soft spot for a good heist,
and newspapers have revelled in the
emerging details of the robbery.
Under the headline Diamond Geezers, the Daily Mirror dubbed one
red-haired raider in the video footage
Mr Ginger, another Mr Strong and
a third, who appeared to be wearing
expensive shoes, The Gent.
Hatton Garden, the center of Britains
diamond trade, has been hit by several
audacious robberies in the past.
In 1987, two armed robbers made off

with an estimated 60m worth of jewels.

In 1993, robbers handcuffed shop workers, broke through high-security doors
and cracked a safe to steal millions worth
of diamonds.
IMAGES
Police later released images showing the
aftermath of the audacious raid.
The images, released April 22, show
how the gang drilled through a six-foot
thick concrete walls to get to the vault.
Police found the vault covered with
debris and strewn with power tools,
including an angle grinder, concrete drills
and crowbars.
Police have not put an estimate on how
much was stolen.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

Will They Tell You The Truth?

The Whole Truth?
A QUESTION: would you expect a tax authority to offer you full information about your tax
liability, even to the extent of telling you that
you probably due to get a tax refund from
them, and your primary liability may be to
another tax authority in another country? Is
a result of globalization (and FIRPTA) that a
tax authority should be concerned with you
paying the right amount and in the right
country, or should they only be interested
in you paying as much as possible (even
wrongly) in their country?
These questions have crossed my mind
because I have been contacted recently by a
number of people in this situation. A typical
scenario is that they have come to the United
States later in life, and all their income is
sourced from the United Kingdom state
pension, other pensions, investment income,
maybe some trust income. UK tax is being
deducted from most of this income, with
the liability being calculated using all of the
income. UK Tax returns continue to be sent
to the person, at their US address, including
the 100 penalty charge if any UK return is
sent in late.
We all know the information provided to
new arrivals in the United States about tax
and other financial obligations is less than
complete! The people Im talking about here
think that since their income comes from
the UK, its not unreasonable that they are
paying tax there.
Some taxpayers in these circumstances,
never join the club of US taxpayers! They
are paying tax, on all their income, albeit to
the wrong country! When I hear about this,
it does annoy me to think that the HMRC,
who every year send the tax return form to a
foreign address and receive back forms that
indicate taxpayers are no longer living in the
United Kingdom, seem to have no standard
letter to point out to a taxpayer that they will
(we can add a probably there, to keep
options open) have a requirement to file in the
country they are living in and maybe (again,
keeping options open) are not due to return
all their income in the UK.
Quite plainly, this may result in taxpayers
claiming refunds for tax incorrectly deducted
or paid in the UK. But HMRC staff are not, to

my knowledge, generally paid commission

on tax received, and particularly they are
not paid additional commission on tax we
should have refunded to taxpayers but have
got away without doing so!
This is obviously something that affects
UK taxpayers living in countries other than the
United States, although as we also know, the
IRS has additional requirements for people
with foreign assets and takes a pretty dim
view of non-filing in general, and of foreign
income in particular.
I understand that giving people this information is not part of the job description of the
HMRC, in a narrow sense. But then, transferring information between tax authorities has
only very recently become part of their job,
and the rationale behind this is to prevent
taxpayers being able to hide taxable income
and/or assets outside their filing country.
The problem the IRS found with this is that
the vast majority of people with undeclared
assets, genuinely didnt know they were required to include income on their tax returns
and file Foreign Bank Account Reports. And
the amounts involved were relatively small
in overall tax terms. They responded by
instituting streamlined procedures last year;
the word streamlined being primarily a
reference to the amount of IRS agent time
involved in dealing with them!
It is difficult to imagine the HMRC and
the IRS, with all the information they have
about us, being unable to distinguish with a
high degree of success between inadvertent
non-filers and tax-evading rogues. The deeper
problem is that if they are not prepared to
provide information proactively to taxpayers,
but will provide it to fellow tax authorities,
the gap widens between taxpayers and their
government (or government and their taxpayers, which seems to be how they look at it!).
Mary-Heather Styles is relieved to be past
the April 15 deadline, and is trying to look forward to the June 15 deadline for non-resident
filing! She is qualified and experienced in both
US and UK taxes and sleeps with the US-UK tax
treaty under her pillow almost!
She can be contacted at mhstyles@transatlantictax.com or (602) 845-1420.

Natural Childbirth Expert Sheila Kitzinger Dies At 86

ANTHROPOLOGIST and childbirth
expert Sheila Kitzinger, whose books
helped people around the world begin
new lives as parents, has died. She
was 86.
Her publisher, Pinter & Martin, says
Kitzinger died last month at her home
near Oxford in southern England after
a short illness.

Kitzinger was
an early leader of
the natural childbirth movement
and sought to empower women during pregnancy and
birth. She wrote
more than two dozen books, including The Complete Book of
Pregnancy and Childbirth, The Experience
of Childbirth and Ourselves as Mothers.
Daughter Celia Kitzinger said her
mother was so much more than a natural birth guru, and had campaigned on
issues including an end to female genital
mutilation.
Her autobiography, A Passion for
Birth, is due to be published this month.

Gail attends the funeral of Michaels real

son has died.
Kevin leaves little Jack with Jenny when

her to look after his son, she does it all the

panics when she thinks Jack might be choking on an onion and she goes into full fright
mode. Which of course makes us wonder if
something has happened in her past, perhaps
with a child of her own, which makes her
overly protective of little Jack and so weird
in her behaviour with him. Theres a lot more
layers to be revealed with Jenny, I feel. Ritas
still giving her the cold shoulder, mind you.
In the back room of the Rovers, Michelle
sorts through a box of stuff (weve all got one)
and finds a stash of letters from the tax office.
Steve has been stuffing the letters in a box and

of 10,000. Steve thinks he can see a way out
of his debt problems, bingo and by jove, hes
got it! He asks Michelle to marry him. She
says yes but then he starts doubting himself
and calls the engagement off. Theres only one
thing left for Michelle to do she proposes to
Steve, he accepts and the engagements back
on. Oh I do like a happy ending.

with only Bens clothes, everyone thinks hes
killed him. But Ben turns up later in the day,
brought home in the back of a police car after
having been beaten and left naked on the side
of the freeway somewhere. Lesson learned?
Phil then proceeds to try to get the Arches
back from Max but he aint budging. Unable to
dump him by the freeway, Phil does the next
best thing, sets up a honey trap: He hires a

With Dot still away in the slammer, it is
Carol who receives a call from Jims nursing
home, telling her Jim has died. Neither Carol
nor Max is too broken up about it. While the
Jim Branning we knew had loving relationships with his grandchildren, his relationships

with his children were complicated. Carol

tells Sonia that she didnt really know him,
that he was a racist bully, and Max says hes
happy to pay to put him in the ground. It is left
to Sonia to go tell Dot. In a poignant scene,
Dot says, We had the best of him Son, you

John Bardon, who brought Jim Branning
to life, passed away last September, of
complications from the massive stroke he
suffered seven years ago. At the time, his
stroke was written into the show, and so Jim
has been in and out of hospital and mostly
out of view for all these years. John did try
to return to EastEnders for a while, and even
though the stroke left him unable to speak,
his face was so expressive it worked. Soon
though, he developed more health issues and
had to retire from EastEnders for good. Since
then, in the story, Jim has been in a nursing
home. In real life though, John lived at home
with his devoted wife Enda. The show would
never write Jim out while John was alive;
they would not have wanted to hurt him. But
once he passed in real life they wrote it in to
pay tribute to the much-loved John Bardon.
John was special to EastEnders fans in
New York as well, having visited here twice
to meet up with fans and help PBS station
WLIW21 (John can still be seen on PBS in the
US where they are showing episodes from
2005). John was brilliant, kind and irreplaceable, and his loss forever leaves EastEnders
with a Jim Branning-shaped hole in it. RIP.

THE ST ANDREWS Society of LA celebrated

Tartan Day at the exclusive Intercontinental
Hotel on the Avenue of the Stars (more Beverly Hills than LA) on April 11 and what an
exciting event it was. From the moment you
stepped out of the car you were piped into
the hotel by Cindi McIntosh and her crew to
be welcomed and received by the members
of the St Andrews Society, all magnificently
dressed in traditional Scottish attire, right
through to the ballroom ablaze with an array
of blue, red, and purple lights adorning the
surrounding curtains made for an entrance no
guest couldnt help but feel very important.
Doing a superb job coordinating the
evening, Ian Skone-Rees Esq. introduced Dr
Michael Cantlay, Chairman of www.VisitScotland.com from Edinburgh. Dr Cantlay who
went on to explain every reason and a few
more besides, as to why you should make it
a priority to make your next visit or vacation
in Scotland, from the beauty of the land to the
warmth and welcome of its people.
The keynote speaker, very charming and at
times humorous, Fiona Hyslop, MSP Cabinet
Secretary for Culture, Europe and External

tour and very rewarding since starting in NY.

Kate plans to return to the Lindo Wing
at St Marys Hospital in Paddington.
Many bets say it will be a girl
named Alice
The bookies and the British media
seem confident it will be a girl.
As for what the baby will be called,
many are betting on one quaint-sounding
name: Alice.
The name is by far the favorite among
Britains bookmakers, with William Hill
putting odds at 2-1 after a number of
unusually large bets came in for it. Ladbrokes puts the odds at 3-1. No one seems
to know why, though.
Elizabeth and Charlotte follow closely,
with Victoria, Alexandria and Diana trailing behind. James and Arthur come in as
the top bets for a baby boy.
Britains royal history has seen a few
women called Alice: Queen Victoria
named her second daughter Princess
Alice, and the queens mother-in-law
Prince Philips mother is Princess

Alice of Battenberg.
How are the parents doing?
Kate, 33, and William, 32, seemed
relaxed about the birth of their second
child, and both had been out and about
chatting with locals and keeping up their
official duties until March.
Meanwhile, William will be taking
some paternity leave from his new job.
The former search-and-rescue helicopter
pilot began his full-time job with the East
Anglian Air Ambulance on March 30, and
is expected to begin flying rescue missions this summer.
Who gets told first about the birth?
The Queen will be told first about the
new arrival after which other members of
the royal family and the Middletons will
be told. Following all that, the public will
be notified. If the baby is born after 10pm,
the public wont be notified until after 8am
the following morning.
How will we all learn the news?
Just like when George was born,
royal officials plan to announce the babys
birth via Twitter, broadcasting the news
directly to the monarchys millions of followers worldwide.
Journalists will get a slight head start,
though; they will get an email two minutes
before the palace tweets the news.
About two hours later, officials will
post a more traditional announcement

to keep the letters out of the public domain for fear that publishing them might
damage public perceptions of Charles
neutrality.
As heir-to-the-throne, Charles is
expected to remain out of politics. The
letters, said to contain strong personal
views, were deemed too sensitive by former Attorney General Dominic Grieve,
who vetoed their release in 2012.
An Appeals Court overruled him last
year, and now the Supreme Court has
upheld that decision.
Conceding defeat, Prime Minister
David Cameron said the government will
begin preparatory work toward releasing
the papers.
This is a disappointing judgment and
we will now consider how to release
these letters, he said. This is about
the principle that senior members of the
Royal Family are able to express their
views to government confidentially. I

think most people would agree this is

fair enough.
DISAPPOINTED
Charles, known to have strong views
on architecture, genetically modified
crops, climate change and other matters,
also said through a spokesman that he
was disappointed that the principle of
privacy had not been upheld.
The courts decision marks the success of a lengthy legal Freedom of
Information battle by the Guardian
newspaper to obtain the so-called black
spider memos, which are named after
his distinctive handwriting.
The Guardians chief editor, Alan
Rusbridger, said editors are delighted
with the decision.
The government wasted hundreds of
thousands of pounds trying to cover up
these letters, admitting their publication
would `seriously damage perceptions of
the princes political neutrality, he said.
Now they must publish them so that the
public can make their own judgment.
The timetable for the release of the
letters is not yet clear. It is also not
known if the government will seek to
redact certain portions of the letters.

Russell Brand Steps Into Election With Miliband Interview

RUSSELL BRAND doesnt vote, but
his interview with opposition leader Ed
Miliband has enlivened a staid, stagemanaged British election campaign.
The bawdy comedian turned anticapitalist campaigner conducted the
interview at his London loft and released
an edited version last month on his YouTube channel, which has more than one
million subscribers.
In the exchange, Miliband disputed the
comedians oft-repeated view that bankers hold more power than politicians and
voting doesnt change anything.
Progress comes from people demanding change, politics responding, not
all the way, and people pushing for that
change to carry on, Miliband said. But
without politics, without government,
the change doesnt happen.

Page 9

Brand, a standup comic and former

husband of singer Katy Perry, has forged
a new career as political activist, campaigning for London tenants threatened
by gentrification and writing the bestselling manifesto Revolution.
Opponents of Milibands center-left
Labour Party criticized his decision to
be interviewed by Brand, who regularly
disparages politicians and was once suspended by the BBC for leaving crude
phone messages on an actors answering
machine.
Prime Minister David Cameron said
Russell Brands a joke. Ed Miliband, to
hang out with Russell Brand, hes a joke.
But Miliband said he wanted to reach
the seven million Britons who arent
registered to vote. British voters go to
the polls May 7.

Police Make Fourth Arrest

In Slaying Of Imam
COUNTERTERRORISM detectives say
theyve arrested a fourth person as they
investigate the slaying of a Syria-born
Muslim cleric who was shot in London.
Scotland Yards Counter-Terrorism
Command said last month a 36-year
old man was arrested on suspicion of
conspiracy to murder Abdul-Hadi Arwani
and was released on bail.
The 48-year old former imam at the
An-noor mosque in west London was
found with gunshot wounds in a parked
car on April 7.
A 61-year-old man was arrested on
suspicion of conspiracy to murder and on
suspicion of commission, preparation and
instigation of acts of terrorism.
A 53-year-old woman was also arrested on the terror charge. No details
were offered as to what the terror
charges entailed.
Another man, Leslie Cooper, 36, was
charged with the murder.

Prince William Starts

Ambulance Pilot
PRINCE WILLIAM has started his new
job working as air ambulance helicopter pilot.
Kensington Palace says William began
work last month for Bond Air Services,
a helicopter operator that serves East
Anglian Air Ambulance. He will undertake job training in the next few months
including simulator, aircraft and inflight skills training and start piloting
missions in the summer.
William, 32, passed his Air Transport
Pilots License exams in March, completing 14 written exams on subjects such as
the principles of flight and navigation.
The second-in-line to the throne will
work with medics responding to emergencies ranging from road accidents to
heart attacks.
The stint will be Williams main job,
although he will also continue to take
on royal duties and engagements both
in Britain and overseas.

IMMIGRATION
By Stephen Ure

H-4 Spouse Employment

Authorization
EFFECTIVE MAY 26, 2015 certain H-4 dependent spouses of H-1B non-immigrants
who are seeking employment-based lawful
permanent resident (LPR) status will be
eligible for employment authorization.
The H-1B classification allows a foreign
national to work for a specific US employer
on a temporary basis, in a position that is
considered a specialty occupation. The
spouse of an H-1B nonimmigrant is eligible
for H-4 status as a dependent. An individual
may hold H-1B status for a maximum of six
years, in increments of up to three years as
granted by the United States Citizenship and
Immigration Services (USCIS). It is possible
to get extensions beyond the six year limit in
certain circumstances if he or she is in the
process of seeking status as a permanent
resident in an employment-based category.
It is these special circumstances that allow
an H-1B extension beyond the sixth year that
will allow an H-4 spouse to be eligible for
employment authorization.
Currently, H-4 dependents are not eligible
for employment authorization. This new rule
published by the USCIS will allow H-4 dependents to apply for employment authorization
only if their H-1 non-immigrant spouse has
reached a certain point in the process to
get LPR status. Specifically, the H-1B nonimmigrant must either (1) be the beneficiary
of an approved form I-140, Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker; or (2) be granted H-1B
status under sections 106(a)and (b) of the
American Competitiveness in the Twenty-first
Century Act of 200 as amended by the 21st
Century Department of Justice Appropriations
Authorization Act. This Act allows an extension of H-1B status beyond the six-year limit if
prior to reaching the end of the sixth year, 365

days have passed since a labor certification

application or a Form I-140 have been filed
on behalf of the worker and the worker is still
waiting for permanent residence.
Beginning May 26, 2015, an H-4 spouse
will be eligible to file form I-765, Application
for Employment Authorization. The application must be submitted to USCIS with the
filing fee of $380 and supporting documents
including evidence of eligibility based on the
H-1 workers status, proof of marriage, and
evidence that he/she has maintained lawful
H-4 status. An H-4 spouse may not begin
employment until the employment authorization is approved and the physical card
(the Employment Authorization Document)
is issued.
The employment authorization for H-4
spouses should be valid for the same period
as the H-4 status. This may be as long as
three years but cannot exceed the H-1B
nonimmigrant workers approved period of
stay and will vary from case to case. Once an
H-4 spouse is issued an Employment Authorization Document, he/she is eligible to work
for any employer in the US; the employment
authorization is not tied to any one employer
as is the case with an H-1B.
USCIS estimates that in the first year, as
many as 179,600 H-4 spouses will be eligible
to apply for the employment authorization
and estimates that there may be as many
as 55,000 eligible H-4 spouses annually in
subsequent years.

Rejoice Florida Brits from Manchester

and northern parts of England
FOR THE first time, direct Miami-Manchester
flights start this month. No more having to fly
into London then trek oop north by various
time-sucking methods. Known and longestablished British travel company Thomas
Cook has twice-weekly flights from May 7,
2015. They stated that the new Miami route
from Manchester airport will cater for families
looking for Florida holidays, or joining a Caribbean cruise out of Port Miami and taking
advantage of a vast array of connections
from across the USA. True that Thomas
Cook launched this route primarily to bring
inbound freezing Britons here for a sunny
break. But they overlooked the secondary
niche demand from the many resident
Expats wanting to fly home year-round by
circumventing London. Which is many of
you, darlings!
Flights of these new routes will include the
introduction of a new Premium service across
all Thomas Cook Airlines long haul routes.
The extra includes priority check-in, up to
32kg hold baggage, brand new and roomier
seats, premium meals and drinks throughout
the flight and a the latest on-demand touch
screen in-flight entertainment system (IFE).
Fares will be a special special low launch offer
including meals and considerably lower than
any other airline flying to UK. Info/Bookings

n FROM MY ARCHIVES. In the January
1994 issue of this paper I interviewed Lady
Colin Campbell over from the UK to promote
her latest insider book on royalty called Diana
in Private. Lady Campbell was disparaging
about Diana, claiming she wasnt a virgin,
was as much to blame for the marriage breakdown as Charles, with other condemning and
revealing comments about the marriages of
Princess Anne, Princess Margaret and the
Queen. Lady Campbell stressed that because
she mixes socially with the Royals she has

book-signing audience was all Americans
at a private literary luncheon in Boca Raton.
I was there as press. Press protocol is you
ask questions you do not make your own
public comments at Q and A time. But when
an audience member asked the royal expert
if Charles would ever marry Camilla her Ladyship stated vehemently. Charles will never
marry Camilla. On that date, Charles and
Diana were still married, Camilla was loathed
by the British public and nobody knew Diana
was to perish three hence. But I stood up,
turned to the audience and said. Remember
these words for years to come. Let them sink
in. Forgive me Lady Campbell, but as the only
other Brit in the room I state categorically that
Charles WILL marry Camilla. However long
it takes. Then I sat down without another
word. The room and author were stunned. Its
2015 and Charles and Camilla just celebrated
10 years of marriage April 9. That milestone
prompted me to include this item.

n SCONES: It is expected of us to
instinctively know how to turn out them
out perfectly. Hence this letter to the Miami
Heralds Food columnist: In 1966 I emigrated
to Florida from England, living in Miami and
now Gainesville. One thing I have struggled
with over the years is trying to make scones.
Ive tried numerous recipes but have never
been able to settle on a recipe that worked
well. Its embarrassing to think that an English
person cannot make scones. Any assistance
would be greatly appreciated. Mary from
Macclesfield. Turns it was her technique not
the recipe. As our teacher drilled into us in
Domestic Science lessons in my Hertfordshire Grammar School, the butter must be
ICE COLD. My scones here in Miami turn
out perfectly because I never forgot that. The
American columnist, after consulting her expert baker British daughter-in-law in London,
told our challenged Brit baker Mary just that.
Additional key tips included a cold rolling pin,
cold buttermilk and other pointers to ensure
crumbly, tender and buttery scones. Email
me if you want the columnists complete
answer. So Florida readers bathed in warmth,
coldness is the key to your next batch of
proud-to-serve scones.

An immediate reaction

Tesco Reports
$8.5bn Loss As It
Seeks Turnaround
RR By Danica Kirka

TESCO, Britains biggest retailer, posted

a record full-year loss of 5.7bn last
month as deteriorating market conditions forced it to write down the value of
supermarkets and other assets.
The loss marks another unfortunate
milestone for Tesco, which has been
dogged by an accounting scandal and a
series of profit warnings that led to the
departure of previous CEO Philip Clarke.
It also shows the impact of a brutal
supermarket price war, as discount
supermarket chains eat into the market
share of a company that once dominated
the market.
The company said it took 7bn of
one-time charges in the 12 months
through February, including 4.7bn for
the reduced value of fixed assets. The net
loss compares with net income of 974m
~ OBITUARY~

Pentangle Guitarist
John Renbourn
JOHN RENBOURN, 70, the masterful
acoustic guitarist and founding member of the Pentangle in the 1960s, has
died at his home in Scotland.
His manager, Dave Smith, called
Renbourn a huge character. He said
he believes Renbourn suffered a fatal
heart attack.
He was always playing and teaching. That is what he loved doing and
he never stopped, Smith said.
Scottish police said his body was
discovered at his home in the Scottish
Borders region. They said there were
no supicious circumstances.
Renbourn teamed with the late Bert
Jansch and others to form Pentangle,
which enjoyed a wide reputation for
playing both contemporary and traditional folk songs.
They played complicated ballads
and folk tales from the Renaissance,
bringing centuries-old music to contemporary audiences.
Renbourn and Jansch did most of
the arranging, Smith said.
He was a very inspirational performer, widely known all over the
world, even though it was not mainstream music, said Smith. When
they emerged, no one else was doing
it. It was a totally new approach.
Smith said he became concerned
when Renbourn did not show up for
a concert with fellow guitarist Wizz
Jones in Glasgow and asked police
to check his home, where his body
was found.
Renbourn is survived by two sons
and a daughter.

in the previous year.

The results reflect a deterioration
in the market and, more significantly,
an erosion of our competitiveness over
recent years, Chief Executive Officer
Dave Lewis said in a statement. We
have faced into this reality, sought to
draw a line under the past and begun
to rebuild.
Revenue for the period fell two percent to 62.3bn.
DARKEST
Lewis can only hope that Tescos
night is darkest just before dawn,
said Paul Thomas, an analyst at Retail
Remedy.
While the market is still challenging,
the company plans to cut costs, lower
prices and improve relations with suppliers, Tesco said.
Tesco closed 43 unprofitable stores
this month, has reduced costs by 250m
and has identified an additional 150m of
savings, the company said.
Tesco shares rose 0.6 percent to 236.2
pence in early trading on the London
Stock Exchange.
The company said trading profit,
which excludes property-related transactions, restructuring costs and other onetime items, fell 58 percent to 1.39bn
pounds, in line with market expectations.

Britain To Offer All Infants

Meningitis B Vaccine
BRITAIN says it will become the first
country to offer all babies a vaccine for
potentially fatal meningitis B after it
reached a price deal with GlaxoSmithKline PLC.
Government health advisers recommended use of the Bexsero vaccine last
year, and the government has spent
months negotiating over the cost.
The drug was owned by Novartis,
which recently sold most of its vaccines
business to GlaxoSmithKline.
Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said
Sunday he was very proud that we will
be the first country in the world to have a
nationwide Men B vaccination program.
Babies will receive the vaccine at two
months, followed by two further doses.
Meningitis is a bacterial infection of
the lining surrounding the brain and
spinal cord that most commonly affects
children and teenagers.

Oil Field Near Londons

Gatwick Airport Bigger
Than Thought

A BRITISH energy company says an oil

field near Londons Gatwick Airport is
much larger than previously thought,
though experts warn it will be hard to tap.
UK Oil & Gas Investments PLC says
research found as much as 158 million
barrels per square mile in the Weald
Basin in southern England, indicating it
may hold more than 10 times as much oil
as previously estimated.
CEO Stephen Sanderson says their
holdings in the basin offer a possible
world class potential resource.
But Imperial College Professor Alastair
Fraser warned the areas geology is rather unfriendly, and while oil may exist, it
will be difficult to get out of the ground.
The British Geological Survey had
estimated the basin contains as much as
8.6 billion barrels of oil.

Two locations in San Diego area

Queen Takes King

by Gigi Levangie Grazer

CYNTHIA HUNSAKER Power, a former

Prima Ballerina, the epitome of elegance
and society, has arisen after an evening of
entertaining. Its been 25 years! Shes in the
kitchen of their multi-million dollar upper east
side New York home in search of a Red Bull.
She is desperate; there are none in the industrial sized refrigerator so shes slamming
cupboard doors and drawers trying to find
either more Red Bull or, at least, the damned
coffee maker! And where are her cigarettes?!
Where does the help hide these things anyways? Esme, her personal maid has hidden
her cigs from here with instructions to only
dole them out five times a day. She decides
to go out and pick up
the morning papers.
There are two large
photos on the front
page one of Jackson
and Cynthia dancing at the party and
the other of Jackson
hand-in-hand with
Lara Sizemore exiting her Upper West
Side apartment later
that same night. She has finally had enough of
her husbands fooling around ad has decided
to kick him out. She realizes she has won the
Power lottery.
Jackson Power, her husband, wakes up
and reaches for her. Nothing, shes already
gone. Jackson Power the Peoples Billionaire a moniker he gave himself. Last night
was their anniversary party and Jackson had
shown up late. They put on a good show for
everyone there. He makes his way downstairs
and takes his multitude of vitamins and
supplements in preparation for heading off to
the office he had taken over for his father
almost a year ago. The largest development
firm in New York was finally his!
Lara Sizemore had been in a twilight sleep
after last nights cocktail of iced vodka and
a wonderful evening in bed with Mr Jackson
Power. Shes now sitting in the make-up chair
being made up to perfection before she hits
the anchor desk of the news. Shes on her
way to becoming the next Diane Sawyer.
Lara really loves Jackson and wants to be
with him but she has challenges of her own.
Her Producer is fired and a new young punk
comes onboard and, of course, he knows
better than her how to get things done and
really wants to prove that he is her boss and
put her in her place. She ends up winning in
the end but the road is a long and winding
one. Will her relationship with Jackson be
able to survive all this turmoil?
And now the divorce games/battle begin!
And what a battle it is! Jackson tries to bully
her with his high power attorney, and she
volleys with hers. Then Jackson is hit below
the belt when his father decides to come back
and run the company again. Only he wants
to run things the old way which just cant
be done anymore, you have to play the game
with the politicians now. Jackson has made
many inroads with the city and has done very
well in moving developments forward with
people. His father coming back threatens to
send it all up in flames! There are millions of
dollars at stake, as well as one of the most
coveted residences in New York City well
worth fighting for. How dare Cynthia think
she can go up against Mr Jackson Power
and win seriously?
Cynthia gets back involved with the running
of the ballet which only fuels her confidence
shes going up against the old regime in
place for eons they dont want change and
do what they can to thwart her every move.
She is seeing her wonderful shrink Goldie
this will leave you in stitches when you hear
his comments and suggestions.
Jackson has a Russian driver who also
has his opinions on marriage, relationships
and running the business, and isnt afraid to
voice them in his broken English. Jackson
decides to hire someone to try and seduce
his wife in hopes of winning the divorce
battle wait until you see how that turns out.
Cynthia is a new person and loves her
newfound confidence. Her grown daughter
Vivienne is gay (another wonderful diversion)
and although they didnt get along in the past,
they discover how much they really do care
for each other and renew their bonds. Another
really fun sidebar and series of events.
I have no doubt that Ms Grazer has written this about real people, but its very well
written and a super fun read. I read it in two
days. This is a great one to take to the beach
with you! Summer is almost here enjoy!

CAL SOUTH HALL OF FAME FOR NAPIER

Former Bolton Football Star

Recognised In California For
Coaching Achievements
JOHN NAPIER, now a resident of Southern
California, has played with, and against,
some of the top footballers in the world
since beginning his career as a teenager at
Bolton Wanderers in 1963, in the then English
footballs First Division.
Napier rose quickly through the ranks and
soon became the clubs fixture at centre-half,
and he was lucky enough to have a player of
the stature of Nat Lofthouse, England and
Bolton, as a friend and tutor during those
early days.
Now 68, Napier, from Northern Ireland,
told Union Jack that for the last 30-plus years
he has been passing on his knowledge and
skills of the game onto young people at all
levels of football. I have been so fortunate
to have been able to give back to the young
players in the coaching area, it really has been
so rewarding for me. In fact to have played
the game at a good professional level and
then have the opportunity to coach as well
has been great, Napier said.
Napier was speaking just days after his
induction into the Cal South Hall Of Fame for
his coaching achievements in the organization last month.
SAN DIEGO
When I arrived in San Diego in December
of 1979, it really was with the thought of
getting out of the game, as I opened a soccer store in Escondido, I thought that would
be my future. but not to be. I had been a
professional player for 17 years, and became
the youngest professional head coach in
English football in the early seventies. But, it
was when he finished as coach and manager
at Bradford City he felt that burn out was
creeping in big time.
Yet, 35 years later here he is, still coaching
and hoping to go on for some more years.
Napier explained: I have seen the game
change so much, I have seen the country
change so much as regards to the great game
of soccer, we have come a long way, but we
are still young in the sport, with such a long
way to go. We have good players at the young
level, I see them all the time, I have coached
some very good players at the State level,
weve just got to figure a way to be one of
the top countries in the world, that is the part
we have not solved yet, so it will take time.
US FOOTBALL
Napiers first taste of playing football in the
US came in 1975 for the Baltimore Comets,
but not before playing for his birth country,
Northern Ireland, at every level,
While playing in the NASL for Baltimore,
where it eventually became the San Diego
Sockers franchise. Napier moved to San
Diego with the team in 1976. The club did not
have many big names at the time, but some of
the other more financially-blessed clubs were
big time, NY Cosmos had Pele, Beckenbauer,
and Carlos Alberto. George Best, Ron Davies
at LA Aztecs, Charlie George, Bobby Moore,
Geoff Hurst, Jon Sammels, Kevin Hector,
Rodney Marsh, Dick Advocaat (manager of
Sunderland) was with Chicago. Mike England, Trevor Francis, Bobby Lennox, Ray
Hudson, Alan Hinton. Napier played against
most of them.
Napier then reminisced: I remember one
game the San Diego Jaws played against
the LA Aztecs at home in 1976, and I was
marking George Best. As we knew each
other pretty well, having played together in
the NI youth teams, we were chatting most
of the game, all good fun . . . until George
got the ball, then the fun stopped as I tried
not to make him my friend anymore. The only
problem, defenders who played against Best
will tell you, youve got to try to catch him,
and THEN dont let him make a fool of you. He
was good, very, very good as we all know.

Keane Faces Trial On RoadRage Charge

FORMER Manchester United captain Roy

Keane will stand trial in June after denying
being aggressive toward a taxi driver during
an alleged road-rage incident.
The 43-year-old Irishman did not attend a
brief hearing at Trafford Magistrates Court in
Manchester last month but a not guilty plea
was entered on his behalf by his lawyer.
Keane, who is assistant manager of the
Ireland team, is accused of causing harassment, alarm or distress to taxi driver Fateh
Kerar in January. Kerar says an altercation
took place after he and his passenger noticed
Keane, who was driving a Range Rover.
Keanes trial at Manchester Magistrates
Court is due to start on June 19.

English Player Banned For

Six Months For Second
Biting Offense

John Napier Cal South Hall of

Fame Class of 2015
Napier then told UJ of a special game: I
think my proudest moment as a player was
when I played for Northern Ireland against
the West Germany national team in Belfast in
1966, this was the same team that England
beat in the 66 World Cup final. Beckenbauer
was playing, I marked Uwe Seeler, what a
player he was - all my family was able to see
me play for the first time, plus I was just 19,
it was a great day even though we lost 2-0.
HONOUR
Last month Napier was inducted into the
Cal South Hall Of Fame to mark his coaching achievements over his years in Southern
California. The award came as an unexpected
surprise and tremendous honour to this
modest man.
Today, all Napiers club coaching is at
San Diego Soccer Club, many of the coaches
were well known stars in San Diego and some
fellow countrymen.
Napier describes the San Diego Club as
a good one, well organized and very competitive. Most of the success Napier has had
have been with the Cal South ODP program,
(Olympic Development Program) recently
changed to Cal South Pro+, these are the
best of the best in Southern California, both
boys and girls. Napier told us he had been on
the girls program for the last few years usually
taking the oldest girls, normally 16 year olds.
During this period the club, guided by Napier
have brought back to Cal South four National
Championships in the last four years.
Napier added: I have also been fortunate
to have worked, and still am, on the administration side of Escondido Soccer Club, where
I have been on their board for the last thirty
plus years.

AN ENGLISH footballer has been banned for

six months after being found guilty of a biting
offense for the second time in a year.
Joss Labadie, who plays for Dagenham
& Redbridge in Englands fourth tier, was
charged with violent conduct after being
accused of biting the hand of an opponent
during a league match on March 28.
He denied the charge but Dagenham said
last month that the case was found against
him and he was handed a six-month ban by
the English Football Association.
The 24-year-old Labadie was banned for
10 matches last season for biting when he
was a Torquay player. That was the same
length of suspension that was handed to Luis
Suarez for biting Chelseas Branislav Ivanovic
while playing for Liverpool in April 2013.

Bournemouth To Join The

Big Boys In The Premiere
League

BOURNEMOUTH, better known for its pier

and pensioners than sports following
decades of fighting just to ensure its professional football team still exists has reached
the Promised Land of British football. For
the first time in its 116-year history, AFC
Bournemouth will be playing in Englands
topflight next season.
Bournemouth faced financial ruin twice
in the last 20 years and was on the brink of
relegation to the fifth tier six years ago, but
is now preparing for the Premier League and
a windfall of at least $180m.
A place in the worlds richest league was

ADAM JOHNSON,
the England and

with a 15-year-old
girl.
Johnson, 27, from Castle Eden,
County Durham, was originally arrested on March 2.
On answering bail at a police station Johnson was also charged with

to Durham Police.
The offences are alleged to have

to go around this south-coast town collecting
cash with buckets to stop the banks closing
the club.
Eddie Howe, back then a youth team player in awe of the supporters determination, is
the manager who oversaw the victory over
Bolton last month that effectively clinched a
place in the Premier League.

Mackays Wigan Reign Ends

After Less Than Five Months

WIGAN HAS fired manager Malky Mackay

after less than five months in charge as the
club faces relegation from the second tier.
Wigan hired Mackay despite him being
investigated by the English Football Association since August over offensive comments.
The FA said last month that its probe
had been extended after significant new
information emerged relating to a dossier of
alleged racist and anti-Semitic text exchanges
by Mackay with a colleague while managing
Cardiff.
When Mackay was appointed, then-chairman Dave Whelans used inflammatory language himself to defend the manager. Whelan
was banned by the FA from all football related
activity for six weeks, and grandson David
Sharpe became chairman.

Stoke Manager Hughes

Signs New Contract

MARK HUGHES, Stoke Citys manager, has

signed a new contract through 2018.
Hired before the 2013-14 season, Hughes
led Stoke to its first top-10 finish in the
Premier League. The central England club is
currently on course to repeat that feat, in 10th
place with eight games to go despite being
without striker Bojan Krkic since January.
Hughes, whose managerial standing took
a hit during a poor spell at Queens Park Rangers, had a year to go on his current Stoke
deal before signing for another two seasons.
TENNIS

Queens To Host BritainFrance Davis Cup

Quarterfinal
BRITAIN has chosen to play its Davis
Cup quarterfinal series against France
on grass at the Queens Club.
The Lawn Tennis Association announced the venue for the July 17-19
World Group matchup last month.
It will be the first time Queens has
hosted Davis Cup play since 1990,
when France beat Britain 5-0 in a
World Group playoff.
Queens hosts an annual grasscourt tournament in the lead-up to
Wimbledon.
Andy Murray has won Queens
three times and calls the venue a
great choice for the Davis Cup.
Murray says Ive been playing at
Queens for 10 years now so I feel
very at home there as do the rest of
the British team.
Britain defeated the United States
3-2 in the first round, while France
beat Germany 3-2.
It will be the first Davis Cup meeting between the two since 1992.

Eden Hazard Voted

Player Of Year By Fellow
Pros In England

EDEN HAZARDS breathtaking individual

displays for Chelsea were honored by his
fellow professionals in English football April
26 when he picked up the player of the year
award.
The 24-year-old Belgium winger upgraded
the young player title he received last year
from the Professional Footballers Association, but still came second in that vote as the
trophy passed to 21-year-old striker Harry
Kane after remarkable season for Tottenham.
Hazards latest accolade adds to the
French player of the year titles he won while
at Lille in 2011 and 2012 when he joined
Chelsea for more than $40m.
Hazard was honored hours after a 0-0
draw at Arsenal pushed him closer to winning the Premier League for the first time with
Chelsea. With 18 goals in all competitions
this season, Hazard has already lifted the
League Cup and helped Chelsea to establish
a 10-point lead in the title race.
The other striker voted into that team was
Kane, who has enjoyed a spectacular rise in
the last six months and was runner-up for the
main player award behind Hazard.
The Tottenham academy graduate, who
has spent time on loan at lower-league clubs,
has scored 30 goals in all competitions this
season after only getting a regular starting
slot in November.
In a remarkable few months, Kane has also
been called up by England for the first time
and scored after 79 seconds on the pitch in
his debut against Lithuania last month.
I have got to keep working hard, but
to be recognized by your fellow players is
something special and it is a night I wont
forget, Kane said.
INTERNATIONAL CRICKET

Pietersen Sends Signal

To England Selectors
With Century

KEVIN PIETERSEN was challenged to

rack up runs in domestic cricket to stand
any chance of an unlikely return to the
England team after a year away from the
international game.
He couldnt have started any better.
In his first game for Surrey since
re-signing for the county to revive his
international prospects, Pietersen struck
170 off 149 balls on the opening day of a
three-day friendly match against Oxford
MCCU at The Parks.
It was his first century in any form
of the game since the Ashes test at Old
Trafford in August 2013, and a clear
reminder to the England selectors of
his enduring quality. He struck 24 fours
and two sixes.
The South Africa-born Pietersen
Englands most prolific run-scorer in all
formats was dumped after last years
Ashes whitewash by Australia so, as
England put it, the team could build a
new ethos and philosophy.
Colin Graves, the incoming chairman
of the England and Wales Cricket Board,
has said players would be picked on
performance and not personality when
he takes over the role in May.

Brits competed with eight of them surviving
the cut. Justin Rose was the top Brit finisher
with Ian Poulter, nine distant from Spieth.
Former Brit winners Sandy Lyle (1988) and
Ian Woosnam (1991) missed the cut. The
Tiger finished with a five under 283.
Earlier, Scotlands Richie Ramsay captured his first European circuit victory in three
years after winning the Trophee Hassan II in
Agadir, Morocco, late March. The 31-yearold Scot started the final round in a leadership
threesome, but some well-placed birdies
gave him a 10 under par 278, one stroke
ahead of the Frenchman, Roman Wattel.

Aintree Crowd Witness

Thriller

A sellout crowd filled Aintree racecourse,

April 11, where the Grand National Steeplechase over a distance of four miles and three
and a half furlongs, plus 30 jumps, caught the
British punters immediate attention. A bunch
of fallers littered the course by the final jump,
but three horses remained in contentions as
the long run in began. The Irish trained Many
Clouds at 25-1, collected the winners purse
of 561,300, beating Saint Are (25-1) by a
length and three quarters. Monberg Dude
was third at 40-1, and Alvarado was fourth
at 20-1. Many Clouds was ridden by Leighton
Aspell,(who won last year race on Pineau De
Re) and trained by Olivier Sherwood. For
owner Trevor Hemmings, it was his third
national success having seen Hedgehunter
win in 2005 and Ballabrigg in 2001. Retiring
champion jockey. A P Tony McCoy, who
has held the jockey crown for 19 years is
retiring this year and rode Shutthefrontdoor
the 6-1 favourite, hoping for a glorious end
to his career. He finished fifth. 39 ran. 20 did
not finish the course.
Late March, California Chrome, the horse
that came close to winning the triple-crown
last year, was beaten by two and three quarter
lengths by Prince Bishop at the Dubai World
Cup in Dubai,($10m for the winner) in the
richest horse-race in the world. Prince Bishop
(14-1) trained in Ireland by Saeed bin Suroor
and rode by William Buick, proved too fast
for the Preakness winner. Former Liverpool
and England striker Michael Owen, was in
the winners circle during the Meydan meet,
when Brown Panther, a horse he jointly
owns, won the Dubai Gold Cup.
California Chrome was confirmed as a
runner in the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting
in June. California Chrome will be based at
Newmarket in preparation for Royal Ascot,
where he will race in the Prince of Wales
Stakes on June 17. He could race in the
Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on May 16
ahead of Ascot.

Thames & Ocean Racing

The University Boat Race, April 11, starting

from Putney Bridge to Chiswick along the
river Thames, some four miles and 374 yards
distance, brought the mens and womens
races together on the same day for the very
first time. Oxford were half a length up in the
mens race after just a minute, by the five
minute mark a clash of oars had Cambridge
momentarily in disarray. Oxford went on to
win the 161st University boat race by 19
seconds. Oxford also won the womens race
too. The mens race started when the Duke
of Wellington was prime-minister in 1829,

while the womens race began in 1927.

The Dongfeng Racing Team took a severe
knock in the Volvo Ocean race (formerly the
Whitbread round the world yachting race)
during the fifth leg when they lost a mast
during heavy seas as they approached Cape
Horn. The Abu Dhabi Racing Team with British skipper Ian Walker at the helm, won the
6,776 mile leg from Auckland, New Zealand,
arriving at Itajai, Brazil, after nearly nineteen
days at sea. The yacht MAPFRE was just
32 minutes behind. The mast less Dongfeng
yacht eventually made it to Itajai safe and
sound. They departed for the sixth leg, April
19, head for Newport Rhode Island due to
arrive early May.

Boxing, Triathlon &

Gymnastics

The unbeaten Kell Brook, the IBF welterweight champion returned to the ring after a
nasty stabbing in the leg during a holiday on
the Canary Islands, and successfully retained
his crown in front of a home crowd in Sheffield. Brook put the challenger Jo Jo Dan
(34-3) on the deck four times in four rounds,
as the Romanian, based in Canada, did not
come out for the fifth round, pushing Brooks
record to 34-0 The 2000 Olympic superheavyweight champion, Audley Harrison,
announced his retirement from the ring. The
43-year-old had short spells as British and
the European champion, but his promise was
never fully realized, unable to win those big
fights. Harrison last bout was a total demolition
in one round by world heavyweight champion
Deontay Wilder. Harrisons record stands at
31-7. Britains Jonathan Brownlee won the
Auckland Triathlon, March 29, in the second
race of the ITU World Triathlon Series. He also
won the Gold Coast triathlon in Australia, April
11, leading the runners table on points. His
brother Alistair, the Olympic champion has an
injured ankle and is out for the time being.
The European Gymnastic Championships
in Montpelier, saw Britain come away with
eight medals, two of them gold. Louis Smith
took Gold in the Pommel Horse, and Kristian
Thomas won the Floor competition.

Formula One & Ice Hockey

The Malaysian Grand Prix had the Mercedes Team struggling over tyres in the tropical heat, allowing Sebastian Vettel to claim
victory for Ferrari, a team he only joined this
year. Vettel won a duel with World Champion
Lewis Hamilton, who finished runner-up,
while Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg
was third. Lewis Hamilton got everything right
at the Bahrain Grand Prix, April 19, leading
from start to finish for his third win in four
races. Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg
lost his second place position to the Ferraris
Kimi Raikkonen on the final lap.
Rod Stewarts son, Liam Stewart, was
chosen for Britains 23 man squad for the
third-tier World Ice Hockey Championships
in Eindhoven, Holland, but was forced to
pull out after injuring a shoulder. Liam born
in London, (his mother is Rods ex-wife,
Rachel Hunter) and he plays for the Spokane
Chiefs. Britain got off to great start with
wins over Croatia (2-1) Estonia (2-1) South
Korea (3-2) but a loss to Lithuania by 3-2,
thwarted their chances of promotion to the
next national tier

Arsenal v Aston Villa Final

The sixth round FA Cup replay at Ewood

Park between hosts Blackburn Rovers and
Liverpool, April 8, saw the championship
side eager to do battle and the Liverpool
goalkeeper earned his paycheck. But it was
the Brazilian, Phillipe Coutinho, who turned
it to Liverpools advantage, with the only goal
of the match in the 70th minute.
The semi-finals played April 18-19 at
Wembley, saw the Reading-Arsenal game
go to extra time after Alex Sanchez put the
Gunners on top six minutes before half-time
while the Royals Garath McCleary made
it even-steven in the 54th minute. Sanchez
scored in the 106th minute giving Arsenal a

2-1 win, and an appointment for their 19th

appearance in an FA Cup final, May 30. The
other semi-final witnessed Phillipe Countinho,
give Liverpool the advantage on the half-hour,
but Aston Villas Christian Benteke, leveled
it six minutes later. Fabian Delph scored the
winner for the Midlanders in the 54th minute.
The non-league FA Trophy final at Wembley, March 29, witnessed a competitive
battle between Conference North side, North
Ferriby Utd and Welsh, Conference outfit
Wrexham. 15,000 fans turned up at the heart
of English soccer, where the ninety minute
score was 2-2, and after extra-time 3-3. A
penalty shootout of 5-4, gave the trophy to
North Ferriby Utd.

Goal Spree For The Scots,

England Hit Four, Gareth
Grabs Two

The final week of March, saw a bunch

of friendlies and Euro-qualifiers with all the
home nations taking part. The friendly at
Hampden Park between Scotland and Northern Ireland saw both coaches use six substitutes apiece in a match that did not produce
much soccer enlightenment, but Christophe
Berra broke the ice for the Scots five minutes
from time to give Gordon Strachans men a
1-0 win. A few days later, same location, the
Scots faced UEFAs newest nation Gibraltar,
in a Euro-2016 qualifying match. Shaun Maloney put the Scots, ahead while the Gibos
scored their first goal in a major tournament
one minute later and the score was level. Not
for long however. Steven Fletcher would
put away a hat-trick., the first treble in a
Scottish international since 1969, Maloney
would make it two with a penalty and Steven
Naismith nabbed one before the break as the
Scots came through 6-1 winners. Northern
Ireland meanwhile won 2-1 at Windsor Park
against Finland in a Euro-qualifier, goals
courtesy of a brace by Lyle Lafferty. The
Finns scored in the last minute.
An 83,000 plus crowd filled Wembley,
as England slipped past Lithuania 4-0,
in a Euro-Qualifier. Wayne Rooney found
his shooting boots in the sixth minute,
with Danny Welbeck scoring on half-time.
Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane added to
the total in the second half. England would be
in Turin just days later, for a friendly against
Italy, where six subs for each side gave
coaches a chance to observe multi- talents,
producing mixed results on the field. Graziano Pella put the Azzurri ahead in the 29th
minute, but a hard driven shot from 25 yards
from Andros Townsend, 11 minutes from the
end witnessed the game end all even 1-1.
Real Madrid striker Gareth Bale, shone
brightly at Haifa, as Wales collected three
points for a 3-0 away victory over Israel,
during a Euro-qualfier. Aaron Ramsey put the
Welsh in front on halftime, then Israels Eitan
Tibi was red carded just after the break. Bale
came into his own during the second half,
finding the net in the 50th and 77th minutes.

Altidore Scores In Denmark,

Red-Carded In Zurich

Jurgen Klinsmanns United States side

held the lead twice at Aarhus, in a friendly
against Denmark but a late goal saw the
Danes win 3-2. Aron Johansson and Jozy
Altidore put the US ahead, while a hat-trick by
Niclas Bendtner gave the Danes something
to cheer about. Against Switzerland in Zurich,
March 31, Brek Shea had the Americans in
front at the break. Jozy Altidore received a
couple of yellow cards, one after the other,
and was sent off in the 68th minute. Valentin
Stocker got an equalizer for the Swiss, ten
minutes from time and the game ended 1-1.
At San Antonio, Texas, April 15, a record
crowd of 64,000 plus turned out for the USMexico fixture. Collegiate, Jordan Morris put
the Americans ahead four minutes after the
break, then Juan Agudelo netted in the 72nd
minute giving the Klinsmann squad a 2-0 win.

The preliminary rounds of the 2018 World

Cup to be hosted in Russia, got underway last
month as the planets soccer minnows faced
one another. The lowest world ranked nation
on the FIFA list is Bhutan, (ranked 209th)
who won both games against Sri Lanka for
a winning aggregate of 3-1.Yemen may be
in a state of war and unrest, but they beat
Pakistan with a similar score line. In the
Caribbean, St Kitts & Nevis put six goals
away in both legs to overwhelm the Turks
& Caicos Islands with a 12-4 aggregate,
Bermuda beat the Bahamas (8-0 agg) and
Nicaragua eliminated Anguilla by the same
score line.

Scottish Cup Results

The final of the Scottish Challenge Petrovac Training Cup was played at McDiarmid
Park, Perth, April 5. The Cup is a tournament
for Scottish clubs in the lower divisions and
this year featured the relegation haunted clubs
of the Scottish Championship, Livingston and
Alloa Athletic. Alloa beat Rangers during an
earlier round, but it was Livingston, who took
advantage in the 21st minute with a goal by
Scott Pittman. Callum Fordyce made it two
after the break, then Jordan White hit a brace
during the final four minutes to give Livi a 4-0
win and the Cup.
The semi-finals of the Scottish Cup, April
18-19, witnessed Hibernian have most of the
play against Falkirk, but it was the Bairns
Craig Sibbald headed goal in the 75th minute
that gave the championship side a 1-0 victory. Some terrific goalkeeping by Falkirks
last line of defense defined the upset. The
other semi-final, witnessed Celtics chances
of a third domestic trophy discombobulate,
as Inverness Caledonian Thistle upset the
Hoops 3-2. Virgil van Dijk put Celtic ahead
in the 18th minute, but the game came to life
when the Hoops goalie Craig Gordon, was
red-carded in the 55th minute. Greg Tansey
put a penalty away for Caley Thistle, and the
match at 1-1, went to extra-time. Edward
Ofere made it two for the Highlanders in the
96th minute, John Guidetti equalized in the
103rd minute, then Caleys David Raven,
hit the winner three minutes from the end.
Celtic vigorously alleged hand-ball by Josh
Meeking, on the break, and a certain penalty,
but the ref denied the appeal.

British Rugby League Star

Sinfield Switches Codes
KEVIN SINFIELD, one of Britains
top rugby league players, will switch
codes at the end of the season after
agreeing to an 18-month deal with
an English second-tier club in rugby
union.
The 34-year-old Sinfield will end
his 19-year association with Leeds
Rhinos to play for Yorkshire Carnegie,
which shares the same stadium in
northern England.
Sinfield is fourth on the all-time list
of point-scorers in rugby league, has
made 40 international appearances
for England and Britain, and has captained Leeds since 2003.
Sinfield said, I never wanted to
play against the Rhinos, and throughout my career I have always had an admiration for rugby union and wanted
to challenge myself in that code.
Yorkshire Carnegie is managed by
Ian McGeechan, the former British
and Irish Lions coach.

1952 and 1964, 28 of those appearances

were as captain. He began taking an interest
in a journalist and broadcasting career in the
early 60s, and soon became a favourite and
icon of TV and radio cricket. His professionalism and candour over the microphone earned
him many years at the BBC, and a career
that took him all over the world, watching
and commentating on the sport he loved. He
was still in the commentary box during his
83rd year. For a long time, the Australian born
just outside of Sydney, was the media face of
international cricket. Richie Benaud was 84.

London Marathon

Some 27,500 runners left Blackheath,

at the start of the London Marathon, April
26, where one of the strongest fields in
its 34-year-old history, where once again
Kenyans and Ethiopians who have dominated
this race in recent years, continued to do so.
The last British winner was Eamonn Martin in
1993. From Blackheath Woolwich Greenwich the Tower of London-the Isle of Dogs
and then down from Buckingham Palace to
finish at the Mall. the 26 mile plus course
drew a galaxy of world class elite runners.
At 600m left to run, defending and two time
winner Wilson Kipsang, was beaten in the
run in by fellow Kenyan, Eliud Kipchoge,
who won the Chicago Marathon recently.
Kipchoge ran a time of two hours, four minutes and 42 seconds, with fellow countryman
and current marathon world record holder,
Dennis Kimetto, third.
Ethiopian, Tigust Tufa, won the womens
race by 18 seconds from former two
time winner, Mary Keitany of Kenya.
Tirfi Tsegaye of Ethiopia was third. Sonia
Samuels was the top finishing Brit in 16th
position, eight minutes behind Tufa. Paula
Radcliffe, 41, ended her professional running career in a career finale, content to
accept fond farewells and just finish after a
multitude of foot injuries drew her retirement.
Radcliffe has won this race three times, setting a world womens marathon record in
2003 that remains unbroken today. British
wheelchair athlete David Weir, was looking
for his seventh London victory, but had to be
satisfied with second place after American,
Joshua George, claimed the glory, Prince
Harry was on hand at the finishing line. Officials reckon the marathon raised millions of
pounds for charity.

England Win Windies Series

England won the second and final Test

match at Grenada, by nine wickets to claim
the short series 1-0. West Indies 299 (Marlon Samuels 103) and 307 (Kraigg Brathwaite 116). England 464 (Joe Root 182 not
out) and 144-1 at close. This concluded the
end of Englands short Caribbean tour, where
the Grenada game marked the 150th match
between the two cricketing competitors.

Englands Brown Misses

Rest Of Season With
Concussion Issues

ENGLAND FULLBACK Mike Brown is

set to miss the rest of the season for his
club Harlequins because of ongoing concussion symptoms after being knocked
out during a Six Nations game more than
two months ago.
However, Harlequins coach Conor
OShea says he is confident Brown will
be fit to play in the Rugby World Cup
starting in September.
OShea says hell have the World Cup
warm-ups and hell be fine. The World
Cup is not an issue at all.
Brown was knocked out after colliding
with Italys Andrea Masi at Twickenham
on February 14. He recovered to play in
Englands final two Six Nations games,
against Scotland and France, but has
had more concussion symptoms since
returning to Harlequins.
OShea says Brown has headaches
throughout the day.

Adam Peaty Of Britain Sets 100

Breaststroke World Record
ADAM PEATY of Britain has broken
the mens 100-meter breaststroke world
record, clocking 57.92secs April 17 at
the British championships at the London
Aquatic Centre.
The 20-year-old Peaty beat the previous record of 58.46 set by South African
Cameron van der Burgh in the same
venue at the 2012 Olympics.

By Ridge Mahoney
Arsenal: Cesc Fabregas was
cautioned in his first match at
Arsenal since leaving for Barcelona
in 2011 and the Gunners were
unable to breach the Chelsea back line in a
0-0 draw. The Gunners fired three goals in
eight minutes en route to a 4-1 pummeling
of Liverpool. Hector Bellerin curled home a
shot, Mesut Ozil connected on a free kick and
Alexis Sanchez drilled a third goal to wrap
up a victory. Olivier Giroud added a fourth.
Aston Villa: Tom Cleverley and
Carlos Sanchez scored to wipe out
a 2-0 deficit which included a terrible error by Brad Guzan that gave
Manchester City an early goal but Villa
conceded a late goal and lost, 3-2. Christian
Benteke scored his eighth goal in six games
in manager Tim Sherwoods return to Tottenham as Villa prevailed, 1-0.
Burnley: Matt Taylor drilled a
penalty kick off the goalpost and
less than a minute later Burnley
conceded the goal by which it lost
to Leicester City, 1-0. They failed to score
in any of their April games and managed
just one point in a 0-0 draw at home against
Tottenham.
Chelsea: A 0-0 draw at The
Emirates extended Chelseas
unbeaten run against Arsenal to
eight games and manager Jose
Mourinhos streak against Arsene Wenger
to 10 matches. Eden Hazards goal in the
38th minute was enough for a 1-0 home
victory over Manchester United. They left
it late at Queens Park Rangers but Chelsea
prevailed, 1-0, on Cesc Fabregas fifth goal
of the season.
Crystal Palace: A run of four
straight victories ended with
back-to-back 2-0 losses to Hull
City and West Bromwich Albion.
Yaya Sanogos header was disallowed for a foul in a 2-0 loss to Hull City.
Yannick Bolasie bagged three goals in 11
minutes in a 4-1 demolition of Sunderland.
He broke the game open by netting in the 51st,
54th, and 62nd minutes after Glenn Murray had
opened the scoring.
Everton: James McCarthy,
John Stones and Kevin Mirallas
scored the goals as Aaron Lennon, Ross Barkley and Romelu
Lukaku supplied the impetus in a 3-0 pasting
of Manchester United. Ross Barkley failed to
convert a penalty kick as Leighton Baines was
again bypassed in the process, but Kevin Mirallas goal provided a 1-0 defeat of Burnley.
Hull City: The Tigers ended
a six-game winless streak by
beating Crystal Palace, 2-0, with
a pair of goals by Dame NDoye.
Paul McShanes goal from a set piece halved

a deficit at Swansea but Hulls chances

evaporated when David Meyler was sent for
a reckless challenge early in the second half.
Hull lost, 3-1. Michael Dawson scored a rare
goal, a cracking header, to sink Liverpool
at home, and all but end their Champions
League hopes.
Leicester City: Jamie Vardy
scored on the hour and the
Foxes won their fourth straight
game, 1-0, at Burnley. The
Foxes netted eight goals during the surge that
included a 3-2 triumph at West Bromwich
Albion decided by Vardys goal in stoppage
time. He scored with a run from the halfway
line to seal a victory that looked in doubt with
the Foxes trailing 2-1 despite a David Nugent
goal. But Robert Huths equalizer in the 80th
minute set the stage for Vardy.
Liverpool: Steven Gerrard
joined 11 other players in playing
his 500th Premier League match
as Liverpool tied West Bromwich
Albion, 0-0. Mario Balotelli started his first league game since November and
Jordon Ibe fired a shot off the post. In what
could have been a win-or-bust to make the
top four, a lack-lustre performance saw Hull
take all three points 0-1 on the east coast.
Manchester City: Fernandino
came off the bench to score an
89 th-minute winner that gave
City a dramatic 3-2 victory over
Aston Villa. Sergio Aguero pounced on a
goalkeeping gaffe for his league-leading 21st
goal of the season and Aleksander Kolarov
swerved home a free kick yielded by a foul
on Fernandinho, who rectified a two-goal
collapse by controlling a corner kick with his
chest and slamming in the winner. An own
goal and a striker by Sergio Aguero powered
City past West Ham, 2-0.
Manchester United: Manager Louis Van Gaal suffered
his heaviest defeat in charge of
United, a 3-0 loss at Everton,
which followed a 1-0 defeat at Chelsea.
Marouane Fellaini squandered a great chance
to score his first goal at Goodison as an opposing player by shooting over the crossbar
from close range.
Newcastle: The Magpies
took another stumble away from
safety with a 3-2 home loss to
Swansea City, their seventh
consecutive defeat. Ayoze Perez scored
after 20 minutes for a 1-0 lead they were
second-best until Siem de Jong grabbed a
consolation goal in the 87th minute. Jack
Colback scored just 18 seconds after the
re-start to pull Newcastle level with Spurs but
after eight minutes they were behind again
and eventually slid to a 3-1 defeat.
Queens Park Rangers: Charlie
Austin failed to convert a penalty
kick and Richard Dunne had a goal

UEFA Orders Soccer Match To Be

Restarted After Referee Error
FOR THE first time in its history,
European soccers governing responded to a teams protests by
unexpectedly ordering part of a
match to be replayed because of
a referees error.
Five days after the original
game, the under-19s womens
teams of England and Norway
played the final minute again
April 9 starting by retaking the
penalty kick that prompted the
controversy.
Englishwoman Leah Williamson sent the spotkick into the
bottom left of the Norwegian goal
to make it 2-2. And the game had
barely kicked off again when the
referee blew the final whistle,
and both England and Norway
celebrated qualifying for the U19s

European Championship.
England had similarly scored
its penalty on the prevous Saturday in Belfast in the sixth minute
of injury time but it was disallowed when an England player
encroached the area. However,
German referee Marija Kurtes
then wrongly awarded a free kick
to Norway instead of retaking the
penalty.
The English Football Association protested, and was surprised
by UEFAs response: Replay the
final moments again from the
spotkick.
UEFA regulations uphold protests in cases of an obvious violation of a rule by the referee that
had a decisive influence on the
final result of the match.

No British Football Teams Will

Play At Olympics In Rio
BRITAIN will not have football teams at
the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro because
the English Football Association failed
to gain support from the other three
federations.
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
are against united British teams, saying
they risk their independence within
FIFA.
The English FA have confirmed that

the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish

associations had been informed of the
decision to scrap plans for a British team.
FIFA vice president Jim Boyce had
said the organization would not sanction
a Britain team without the support of all
four federations.
Britain had mens and womens teams
at the London Olympics in 2012, but that
was regarded as a one-time only deal.

disallowed in a 0-0 draw with West Ham. Rob

Green marked as his 100th appearance with
an excellent display.
Southampton: Two goals by
Graziano Pelle were matched by
Tottenham and Saints were held
to a 2-2 draw. James WardProwse and Pelle ended barren runs without
a goal by scoring in a 2-0 defeat of Hull City.
Stoke City: Charlie Adam lashed
an equalizer into the top corner from
just inside the area as the Potters
drew, 1-1, with Sunderland. Peter
Odemwingie came on as a sub in his first
appearance since August. Adam got the
winner in a 2-1 victory over Southampton that
snapped a four-match winless streak. Mame
Diouf capitalized on a defensive miscue to
equalize and Adam struck the winner with six
minutes to play.
Sunderland: Connor Wickham scored his fifth goal of the
season for Sunderland in the
first minute of a 1-1 draw with
Stoke City. A stunning goal by Jermain Defoe
swapped for U.S. international Jozy Altidore
during the January transfer window brought
Dick Advocaat his first victory as Sunderland
manager with a 2-1 defeat of Newcastle.
Swansea City: Nelson Oliveira
scored his first English goal and
set up Jack Cork for the winner in
a 3-2 comeback victory at Newcastle United. Gylfi Sigurdsson netted in the
50th minute to put Swansea ahead. Goals by
Ki-Sung Yueng and Bafetimbi Gomis before
halftime opened up a two-goal lead that was
sliced in half, and despite playing up a man
not until stoppage time did the Swans nail
down a 3-1 triumph over Hull City.
Tottenham: Spurs twice rallied
from a goal down to draw with
Southampton, 2-2. Equalizers from
Erik Lamela (apparently scored with
his arm) and Nacer Chadli (his 10th
goal of the season) drew them level and
Federico Fazios goal-line clearance helped
earn the point. Christian Eriksens goal in a
3-1 defeat of Newcastle turned out to be the
winner. Chadli had opened the scoring in
the first half and Eriksen scored shortly after
Newcastle had equalized. Harry Kane tacked
on a third goal in stoppage time.
West Bromwich Albion: Tony
Pulis returned to Crystal Palace
victorious. James Morrison headed
home a goal 100 seconds into the
match and Craig Gardners goal in the second
half secured a 2-0 decision, West Broms
first away win since November. In back to
back home losses to Queens Park Rangers
and Leicester City the Baggies scored three
goals and conceded seven.
West Ham United: Adrian
saved a penalty kick to help the
Hammers earn a 0-0 draw at
Queens Park Rangers. Aaron
Creswell struck a superb free kick in the
seventh minute to push the Hammers ahead
of Stoke City and they held that lead nearly
to the end but not long enough; an equalizer
in the fifth minute of stoppage time yielded
a 1-1 tie.

Mathews Wins Interim

WBA Lightweight Title

HOMETOWN fighter Derry Mathews

won the interim WBA lightweight title
after beating Tony Luis of Canada by
unanimous decision at Echo Arena
April 18.
Luis was drafted in at the last minute.
Richar Abril of Cuba pulled out of the
fight twice due to illness and was stripped
of the belt, and replacement Ismael Barroso of Venezuela had to withdraw when
he couldnt obtain a visa.
Luis was aggressive and unyielding,
but Mathews largely controlled the fight
until the end, when Luis late rally wasnt
enough for the judges, who gave it to
Mathews by 114-112, 114-112, 115-112.
Mathews improved to 38-9-2 (20 KO)
with his first major world title, while Luis
dropped to 19-3 (7 KO).

World Cricket Cup
THE 2015 World Cricket Cup concluded at
Melbourne, March 31, when Australia beat
New Zealand by seven wickets to win the
trophy for the fifth time. New Zealand 183
all out. Australia 185-3. A total of 49 matches
from start to finish decided the winners,
before Aussie skipper Michael Clarke, lifted
the silverware aloft. The semi-finals saw
Australia beat defending champions India,
by 95 runs. Australia 328 (Steven Smith
105)-7 at 50 overs, India 233 at close. New
Zealand won the other semi by four wickets
over South Africa, after rain interfered and the
Duckworth/Lewis method decided the result.
South Africa 281-5 at 50 overs. New Zealand

England spent the month of April in the

games and three Test matches against a
West Indies side, who were without Chris

were against a St Kitts & Nevis Invitational
XI at St Kitts, were both drawn. St Kitts &
Nevis 59 and 76-7 at close. England 370

match; St Kitts & Nevis 303-9 declared.
England 222 all out. The first Test at Antigua,
saw England in a strong position leaving the
Windies 438 runs to win with less than two
days to go, but Jason Holder kept the tail-end
wagging with an 103 not out and the game
ended drawn. England 399 (Ian Bell 143) and
333 (Gary Balance 122)-7 declared. West
Indies 295 (Jermaine Blackwood 121) and
350 (Jason Holder 103 not out)-7 at close.
The match saw seam bowler James Anderson, become the highest Test wicket taker in
English cricket. His total, 384 wickets in 100
Test appearances. Sir Ian Botham originally
held that honour with 383 Test wickets.

Lee Westwood Wins Third

Indonesia Masters Title
ENGLANDS Lee Westwood won
the Asian Tours Indonesia Masters
for the third time last month, beating Thailands Chapchai Nirat with
a birdie on the first hole of a playoff.
The 42-year-old Westwood closed
with a one-over 73 to match Chapchai at seven-under 281. Westwood
bogeyed Nos. 16 and 17 and finished
regulation with a par on 18.
It was a tough putt coming into
the hill over on 18, Westwood said.
I misread it slightly and hit it to
about five feet and missed it. But
fortunately in the playoff, I hit it to the
exact same spot. I knew the line and it
was a nice straight putt for the win.
Westwood has nine Asian Tour
victories and 42 worldwide titles.

Tennis: Murray & Djokovic

Clash Again, Murray Ties Knot

Brutal humidity and a raging summers

day made things difficult for Andy Murray
and Novak Djokovic in the final of the Miami
Open on Key Biscayne, April 5. It looked fairly
even for a while, before Djokovic prevailed in
a match that went two hours and forty-seven
minutes winning 7-6 (7-3) 4-6, 6-0, leaving
both players drained. Djokovic claimed his
fifth victory here in South Florida, while Murray has won twice here too. The Scot reached
the final over the talents of Donald Young
(US) and Santiago Giraldo while his win
over South African Kevin Anderson, was his
500th career game set and match. Dominic
Thiem of Austria and then Tomas Berdych
of the Czech Republic in the semi-finals put
him against old nemesis Djokovic, who has
now won 18 of their 26 career encounters.
Heather Watson got passed Eugeniya
Rodina, before going out 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 to
the 13th seed Anglique Kerber of Germany.
Maria Sharapova made an early exit to fellow
Russian Daria Gavrilova, while Serena Williams claimed her eighth Miami title beating
Carla Suarez Navarro in the finalHeather
Watson was at the Family Circle Cup in
Charleston, SC, but went out 6-3, 4-6, 7-5
to Donna Vekic after a two and an half hour,
first round tussle Andy Murray became
a married man at the 12th century Dunblane
Cathedral in his home town, April 11,where
family and friends celebrated his union with
Kim Sears, his longtime girlfriend. Kilts were
the order of the day, and nary a tennis racket
was seen as the 27-year-olds pledged their
troth. A large crowd filled the nearby streets
and welcomed the couple as they arrived and
departed after their nuptials.

Golf: Perfect Masters

Display By Jordan Spieth

Relentless quality could be the term to

describe Jordan Spieth, extra-ordinary victory at Augusta, Georgia, April 13, where an
18 under 270 made him one of the youngest
players to ever win the Masters. The 21-yearold Texan, who dropped out of college for a
career on the fairways, won by four strokes
from Justin Rose and Phil Mickelson. While
the pre-media coverage focused on Tiger
Woods return and the world number one
Rory McIIroy, Spieth led from start to finish
in a scintillating display of tee shots, fairway

THE LAST few loose ends of the rugby

season are being tied up clearing the way
for the World Cup with the kick-off starting
on Friday, September 18, when England take
on Fiji at Twickenham.
Rugby World Cup Pool Stages
There are four pools, each comprising five
nations from which two will progress to the
quarter-finals. The top four sides were kept
apart, then countries ranked from sixth to
tenth were allocated to separate pools, and
so on down to the bottom five teams, ranked
from sixteenth to twentieth.
Controversially, the
draw for the pools was
taken in December 2012,
three years before the competition. Back then France
were ranked fourth in the
world. Today, they have
dropped to seventh with
England, Wales and Ireland
ahead of them. This is typical of a crazy commitment to show a clear
set of fixtures early.
It has led to the formation of the so-called
Group of Death, Pool A. This features
Australia, England, Wales, Fiji and Uruguay.
It means that two strong teams will be eliminated. My guess is that it will be either England or Wales and frankly both sides have
the ability to reach the semi-finals at least.
Pool B looks decidedly less uncomfortable: South Africa, Samoa, Japan, Scotland
and the USA. The Scots surely have an excellent opportunity to win their way out of this
group alongside South Africa.
Frankly Pool C looks a laughable collection
of odds and ends. The World Champions,
New Zealand, lead the group, followed by
Argentina, Tonga, Georgia and Namibia.
Argentina have some pretensions though
their last performance in the Rugby Championship does not suggest that they are
remotely likely to reach the semis.
France are top seeds in Pool D followed by
Ireland, Italy, Canada and Romania. Frankly
it looks a bit of a push-over for the Irish and

the French must have greater firepower

even with their current slapdash approach
to qualify in second place.
Quarter-Final And
Semi-Final Stages
The winners of Pool C, inevitably the All
Blacks, will meet the runners-up of Pool D,
possibly Ireland. In Pool B is hard to see anyone other than South Africa coming top and
they go on to play whoever scrapes second
place in Pool A England or Wales, for my
money. This shape of matches seems to be
heading for a semi-final game involving New
Zealand and South Africa.
In the other half of the draw, Pool D winners, France (?)will take on Pool C runnersup, Argentina. That makes the remaining
quarter-final between Australia and, just
possibly, Scotland, leading to a semi-final
pairing of France and Australia.
One cannot help but feel that the southern
hemisphere has been favoured by the seed-

ings. It will demand a sustained run of high

quality rugby for any of the home nations to
get to the semi-finals, let alone the Final itself,
in which I confidently predict New Zealand
and Australia will run out at Twickenham at
4pm on Saturday, October 31, 2015.
