YMCA of Easley, Pickens & Powdersville

SUMMER / FALL 2015 PROGRAM GUIDE
888-835-5221
www.PCYMCA.net

DID YOU KNOW?

21% of Pickens County 3rd
graders are below state
standards in reading.

49% of elementary students in

Pickens County qualify for
free or reduced lunch.

4.53% of high school students drop out of school in Easley, Pickens and
Liberty compared to the 2.6% state average.

The Y is committed to meeting these needs head on. Providing at-risk youth
with opportunities to build relationships and gain skills and experiences that
build confidence in themselves and show them that they have the potential to
be leaders and catalysts for positive change in their community.

Swim Lessons for all 2nd

Grade McKissick Students
Gaining new skills builds confidence that leads to increased
confidence in other aspects of life, such as academics.
Research shows that only one in ten youth from low-income
families (10 percent) go on to graduate from a four-year
college, compared with over a quarter (28 percent) of youth
from middle-income families and half (50 percent) of youth
from high-income families.
83% of McKissick Elementary students qualify for free or
reduced lunch and many have never experienced the
confidence and joy that comes from learning to swim. So, the
Y and McKissick partnered and began providing all 2nd grade
McKissick students with swim lessons. Thats 60 children who
may never have learned to swim without this program.

YMCA Mentor Easley

Research shows that at-risk youth who have a positive mentor are:

46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs

27% less likely to begin using alcohol
52% less likely to skip school
37% less likely to skip a class

more confident of their performance in schoolwork

one-third less likely to hit someone

In 2010 in Pickens County, 26% of children

were living in single parent homes and, in
2014, 150 children entered foster care in
Pickens County.
These youth, among many others, could greatly
benefit from a positive role model in their life.
Seeing this need, the Y is partnering with
Mentor Greenville and Mentor Anderson to
create a mentor program for elementary and
middle school students in Pickens County.

Camp iRock: a summer learning loss camp

To succeed in school and life, children and young adults need ongoing opportunities to learn and practice
essential skills. This is especially true during the summer months. Due to learning loss during the summer
months alone, low income youth are 2 to 3 years behind their peers academically by the time they reach
middle school.
The Pickens County YMCA has partnered with the
School District of Pickens County and the United
Way of Pickens County to pilot a summer literacy
learning loss prevention program for at-risk
children. In the summer of 2015, approximately
96 rising 1st-4th graders from five Easley area
elementary schools will spend the summer engaging
in exciting academic and enrichment activities at
Camp iRock. Facilitated by certified teachers and
trained counselors, the unique curriculum is
designed to help close the achievement gap and
prevent these at-risk children from falling behind
over the summer months.

The Y. SO MUCH MORE.

Membership
Type

Open to All - Income Based

As a non-profit, we want everyone to be a part of the YMCA,
regardless of race, gender, beliefs, age or income. Because of
that, we have pricing based on your specific situation.
Your membership rate is adjustable based on your total
household income, number of adults and number of children on
the account. The rates listed here are for those whose
household income is $45,000 or more per year.
Please visit our website to see what your specific pricing will
be. The pricing will be good for 24 months from the time the
membership begins.
In order to adjust your rate, you must present a current tax
return to verify household income at the time you join
and again every two years. Accepted documents for income
verification include the 1040, 1040EZ or 1040A.
A staff member will view line 22 of your 1040, line 4 of your
1040EZ or line 15 of your 1040A. For more details, view our
FAQs online.
If you are not required to file taxes, please present a statement
of non-filing, which can be obtained for free by calling
1-800-829-1040 or visiting the IRS website.
In those cases where the most recent tax return does not
reflect the current circumstances, you can submit your story
and situation online so that we can help you in any way we can.
Please visit www.pcymca.net/membership.php

days when they exercised.
There is a documented relationship between employee
health and staff productivity.
As more employers add wellness programs and on-site
fitness centers to their benefit package, it is important to
stay current and competitive.

AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT 15-16

Y AFTERSCHOOL: Focus on Healthy Living
In Y Afterschool, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to live the best
life possible and we want to equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to
live a healthy life because they are our future. Thats why we have adopted the
YMCA of the USAs Healthy Eating and Physical Activity standards to provide our
youth with fresh fruits and vegetables, teach them what a healthy diet looks like
and show them that physical activity takes on many forms and can be fun!

Y AFTERSCHOOL: Focus on Education

In Y Afterschool, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to
experience learning in a fun, interactive and positive way to see that they can
learn something new and do something they never thought possible. Thats
why we incorporate interactive educational activities into our afterschool
programs giving kids the opportunity to
see the things they learn put to use such
as building a rocket and seeing who can
come closest to hitting the target or
growing a plant and turning it into a face.

Y AFTERSCHOOL: Focus on
Character Development
In Y Afterschool, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building
blocks for quality of life and future success. Thats why we have focused activities
that teach kids character values like caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and
faith. Our behavior management is rooted in teaching kids how to master self
control and how to look out to others before ourselves.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BRING?
Children who are not potty-trained need to wear a swim diaper.
Long hair needs to be tied-back to help them swim without the
distraction of hair in the face. Although not required, we
suggest that girls wear a one piece suit so that they do not
have to adjust it while swimming.
CAN I WATCH MY CHILDS LESSON?
Yes! We require that parents stay during lessons but ask that
parents stay within the seating areas so that the children are
not distracted.
WHAT IF WE MISS A CLASS?
Refunds and/or make-up classes will not be offered for missed
classes.
WHAT IF MY CHILD CANNOT PARTICIPATE?
Once a session has begun, if the child is pulled out of the class
by the parents/guardians, the YMCA will only issue a credit. No
refunds will be issued.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

WHAT HAPPENS DURING BAD WEATHER?

The decision to cancel classes due to inclement weather will
be made as early as possible. We will notify you of any
cancellations as soon as we can.
All sessions have 2 inclement weather make up dates set in case
classes are cancelled. However, the YMCA can only guarantee 6
classes per session. Inclement weather makemake-up days are
typically on Fridays, same time.
WHAT IF MY CHILD IS AFRAID OF THE WATER?
If your child is fearful of water, our instructors will be limited
in their ability to help during group lessons. Most fears come
from a lack of exposure to water, resulting in uncertainty of
the water. In order for children to learn to swim, they must be
willing to attempt the skills that are being taught.
We recommend helping your child get adjusted to water by
playing in the bathtub. Water on and around a childs face can
be an overwhelming experience the first time it happens. Help
them prepare before they arrive at lessons. Also consider
private swim lessons for one on one attention.

Things to Know
Throughout the duration of the party, there will be a YMCA staff member who will assist with set up, clean up and any other needs
your party may have. The YMCA Party Host is available to serve food, cut cake and provide games. They are there to serve you and
your guests, so please don't hesitate to ask for assistance. Once registered, please be sure to stop by the Member Services desk to
pick up your pool party packet with invitations inside. Additional fees will apply for parties with additional swimmers as compared to
numbers listed. At the beginning of each party, swimmers will be swim tested to ensure their safety. Life jackets will be provided for
those that qualify. If a party host brings more swimmers than registered for, the lifeguards may require limited swimming. The host
will be responsible for any damages during the party.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING
During the Spring, we host several lifeguard trainings for
employees and community members. We use the Red Cross
Lifeguarding Program to officially certify lifeguards.
Participants must be 15 years old on or before the final
scheduled session of this course. Before the class, participants
must swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath
control and rhythmic breathing. They may swim using the front
crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on
the back or side is not allowed. Participants must also be able
to retrieve a 10 pound object from the bottom of the pool and
swim to the side using only their legs. They should be able to
tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Swim goggles
may be used. If the participant does not pass the course, a
refund will not be issued nor will there be discounts for another
course.

At the Y, we believe everyone, regardless of their financial situation, should have the
opportunity to participate in the life changing experiences of the YMCA services and programs.
We believe that today's children are tomorrow's leaders and we have the responsibility to help
develop them. Each year, the Pickens County YMCA scholarships thousands of dollars to
families and children in need in our community and we could not do this without your help!
Last year we gave out $110,000 and only raised $60,000. This year our goal is to raise
$100,000! With your help, this will be possible!

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Pickens County YMCA is a community non-profit (501c3)
company that serves the local community through membership
and programs. The Y receives no government funding nor is it
governed by the community. The PC YMCA is governed by a
local Board of Directors (BOD). The BOD has full authority to
execute all decisions regarding policies, financial obligations,
supervision of the CEO, and the future happenings of the
YMCA. Board Members serve a 3 year term but are eligible to
serve again after one year. All board members are full
volunteers and receive no compensation or benefits for their
service to the YMCA.
The Pickens County Y BOD requests all matters regarding the
YMCA be brought to the staff and/or CEO. Day-to-day issues,
program decisions, facilities and interpretation of policy are the
decisions of the CEO.
The BOD serve primarily as a policy making body. They also
approve the vision of the YMCA, financial debts and supervision
of the CEO.
Board Members serve the YMCA by offering their 4-Ws.
