Content Standard:

Performance Standard:
performs examples of Central Asia, South Asia and Near East countries music, alone and with
others, in appropriate tone, pitch, rhythm, expression and style
I. Objectives:
A. Listens to the songs from Central Asia, South Asia and Near East countries alone and/with
others.
B. Correlates Central Asia, South Asia and Near East countries music to the lives of the
people
C. Analyzes examples of Central, South Asia and Near East countries music and describes
how the elements are used
D. Explains the distinguishing characteristics of representative Central, South Asia and Near
East Countries music in relation to the culture of the area
E. Performs on available instruments from Central Asia, South Asia and Near East countries
alone and/or with others
E. Improvises simple rhythmic/harmonic accompaniments to selected Central Asia, South Asia
and near East coutnries music
F. Develops musical awareness and creativity in expressing oneself while doing the
fundamental processes in music

Vocal Music of India
Two classical traditions are now recognized:
1. Carnatic Music
1.1. Refers to the music of South India
1.2. Unified where schools are based on
1.2.1. the same ragas,
1.2.2. the same solo instruments (veena, flute and violin)
1.2.3. the same rhythm instrument (mridangam and ghatam)
2. Hindustani Music
2.1. Music in the north
2.2. Goes back to vedic period around 1000 BC
2.3. Nasal singing is observed in their singing
2.4. The most common style of singing is called khyal, meaning
imagination
