Darren hat-trick
at wet Woodlands
BOWLS
Darren Plenderleith from Tamworth completed a hat-trick of
wins in the Frank Cave Memorial Trophy at the Woodlands
Park, Doncaster.
Incessant rain caused deep
puddles by the time the final at
9pm. Darre beat Chris Hill by
the minimum margin 21-20 in
his quarter-final, and escaping
from 16-20 in the final against
Chris Kelly.
Darren beat Richard Jackson 21-4 in the semi-final. Other
quarter-final scores: Richard
Jackson 21 Andy Mailer 16, Chris
Kelly 21 Craig Hill 13, Mark Hughes 21 Andy Judson 20. Other
semi-final: Chris Kelly 21 Mark
Hughes 19.
n The green was puddled up in
Elland before the start of their
qualifying session. The organiser asked the players if they
wished to proceed and someone said We may have a better
chance of beating Gary Ellis with
the green in this condition. Well
so much for that theory as wins
of 21-4, 21-5 and 21-3 proved that
the Silver Fox can cob them as
well as bowl them. Gareth Gwilliam was the other qualifier on
the night. Nick White from High
Green won the Yorkshire Merit five years ago on the Elland
green and revisited the site of
his triumph last Sunday winning three games to make finals
day. Nick beat Scott Tattersley
21-8 in the third round. The other qualifier on the night was also
a Yorkshire Merit winner at this
venue, Jimmy Davison the 2012
champion, who beat Josh Brown
21-8 in his qualifying game.
n Chris Brown won through
three rounds of the Rudheath

DAIWA SEMI-FINAL
by Bob Roberts

grassroots@sheffieldnewspapers.co.uk
@StarGrassRoots

The richest club match competition in the UK reached its

semi finals stage last weekend as 70 qualifiers lined up
for the first of two matches
to determine who will compete in the grand final on
June 28.
Heavy overnight rain resulted in a severe dip in temperatures and when combined
with a strong wind it came as
no surprise that bites were
much harder to come by than
they had been in earlier practise sessions.
Not that this mattered too
much because the goal for
every competitor on Saturday was simply to win his or
her section and claim a place

in the final where 3,000

worth of Daiwa sponsored
prizes will be on offer. In total, the value of prizes and
cash going up for grabs over
the three matches is worth
a staggering 5,500. Is there
any wonder our Club Match
Angler Championship gets
more popular by the year?
Tactically it was a simple match and all the leading weights fell to exactly the
same technique, presenting
a feeder at relatively close
range. Most loaded their
feeders with micro pellets
and then it was down to hook
bait choice. Maggot worked
well but the better F1 carp
tended to fall to banded hard
pellets.
Championship regular
Steve Holberry led the way
with a net of mostly F1 carp
taken on 4mm pellet feeding micros through a scoop
feeder fished at around 16
metres. He walked off with

a place in the final and the

top cash prize of 330. He
finished nearly 10lb clear of
Russ Derritt who took home
270 and even Steve Billups
in fifth place scored 115. In
total 13 different anglers won
cash payouts.

n Result: 1. S Holberry 54-2; 2. R

Derritt 44-14; 3. M Turton 43-8; 4.
L Nemeth 39-1; 5. S Billups 36-11;
6. G Proffitt 30-7.
n Section winners (all qualify
for the final at Haytons Little
Grebe Lake on June 28): Steve
Holberry, Dave Patrickson, Kev
Martin, Bill Wild, Paul Beresford, Mark Bows, Brian Searle,
Steve Billups, Dean Robinson,
Lee Nemeth, Russ Derritt.
n Special thanks to Hayton Lakes
and fishery manager for hosting
the match; Pauline and Geoff
Hurt who did a sterling job in
administering the whole show
from start to finish. Without the
loyal support of this pair there its
doubtful there would be a Club
Match Angler Championship.

Serial winners AFP put their

name back on the Rotherham Sunday League Cup
whilst holders Joker, serial
runners-up this season, lost
the grip theyd had on the
trophy for three seasons.
AFPs win at the New York
Stadium was their first in the
competition since 2011 and
added to their recently acquired Sunday League Premier Division title which
they won for a record sixth
successive time.
It was Jokers third cup
final defeat in a week at the
stadium having lost to AFP
in the Rotherham Association Cup Final and then to
Mexboroughs Memories in
the Rotherham Charity Cup.
They also finished runnersup again in the league.
But they were in front
here until right on half-time
and there was nothing between them - and Joker had
had the better chances and
probably shaded it - until
two goals in a minute midway through the second half,
turned it AFPs way.
Jokers Dean Conway hit
a post from a great chance
in the third minute and they
deserved their 20th minute
lead, Conways low cross being fired home at the far post
by Adam Houghton.
A fine save by AFPs Ben
Brunt prevented Lee Hill increasing the lead but AFP,
despite a below par first half,
showed their resilience by
getting a 44th minute equaliser through Steve McDonnell after good work by
Haydn Barnett.
Early in the second half a
fierce Steve Hopewell effort
brought a fine save from Jok-

ers Jamie Bailey.

Then Hill sent Houghton
racing away but his lob was
off target before Joker again
went close twice, Conway
having a fierce shot deflected
wide and, from the corner,
his flashing header was brilliantly kept out by Brunt.
AFP had improved this
half but a key moment
proved to be the introduction of sub Chris Esberger.
Within minutes of going
on he was sent clear to slip
the ball past Bailey to give
AFP a 67th minute lead and
in the next minute, he was on
hand near the line to turn in
Ben Thorntons low cross.
And it was 4-1 after Esbergers through ball sent in
Ben Thornton on 75 minutes.
An amazing dipping volley from 35 yards from Andy
Battersby - which would have
been a goal of the Season contender at NYS - came back off
the AFP bar before Conway
was rewarded for his toil for
Joker with a well-taken volley from a Battersby freekick.
AFP: Brunt; Cuckson, Wesley, Jones, McDonald; Darker, Lund (Smith 64), Barnett;
Thornton, Hopewell (Esberger
62), McDonnell (Williams 77).
Unused: Hibbert, Flint.
Joker: Bailey; Warren,
Swailes. Clayton, Fawcus; Battersby, Haigh, Hill; Houghton,
Conway, Maxfield. Unused: Austin, Forster.
Referee: David Heap
(Rotherham).

n The final was named the Brian Beeley Cup in memory of

the late league president who
was one of the league founders
in 1966 and worked tirelessly
for it. A silence was observed
and the awards were presented by his daughter, Mrs Helen
Richards.
n The final of the leagues
George Stainrod Trophy at
the New York Stadium saw
Pewter Pot beat Wilton Athletic 6-1.

Bagshawes title
IMPERIAL SUNDAY
B a g s h aw A r m s f i n a l l y
claimed the Premier Division title by defeating Byron
House 7-0.
The win puts them out of
reach of Gypsy Queen who
have one game remaining,
against Bagshaw, who, still
have three fixtures to fulfil.
Bagshaw have won all 15
league matches so far this
season.

First Division: Shiregreen won the First Division

title. They needed to avoid a
heavy defeat against The Abbey but did quite the opposite, winning 6-1 to take the
title by three points.
Second Division: Birley
Moor News moved into second place by beating Matthew Cryer 4-2 but its still a
three- way battle for the runners up spot as Jack In A Box
have a game remaining and
Bracken Moor two games.
