A Picture of Courage

The uncertainties

of farming

where terrorist

activities are

heavy had brought

about the decision.

The truck was^ loaded with the household goods, personal items,
furniture and the other things accumulated during the years of living in one place.
The husband was driving the truck. Behind him came his family.. They were driving - the
family car also loaded with odds and ends for the move to karoi.
As they pulled out of their driveway onto the farm road, it happened. Automatic
rifle fire came from the side of the road. They had let the truck pass unmolested and
had fired on the car. All of them were hit immediately.
Jenny, the wife was shot in
the face knocking most of her teeth out and causing a hole in her cheek. Sarena, the
12 year old daughter, was shot in the foot. Loftus, the boy, younger than Sarena, was
shot through the leg.

The Car left the road and landed in the ditch.

The unbearable

noise of the firing continued as the terrorists began to close in to finish the job of
destruction they had started.
Sarena picked up the small caliber pistor and began firing in
the attack.
She emptied the gun in a short time.
The terrorists

fire and stopped their attack.

the direction of
heard the return

They became afraid and all ran away in a panic, leav

ing behind much of their supplies.

Jenny spent several weeks in the hospital recovering from her wounds.
When we
first met her, she did not talk much. Her jaw was frozen shut from the devastation to
her face.
After listening to a . tape of a sermon from the book of James, she said,

"Everybody has trouble with their tongue,

even me.

Here I am with half of my tongue

shot away and still it is naughty

Jenny Versfeld is now in the Salisbury Hospital undergoing plastic surgery.

She
mixes freely with the wounded soldiers giving them inspiration to carry on. She feels
quite unhindered in her specialized ministry since she is not bothered by being a
beautiful young thing that would cause the boys to be ill at ease. But she became up
set one day and was giving her doctor a lot of lip, until they persuaded her to have a

pedicure to lift her spirits. Now she says she has a broken face, a scarred body, but
the most beautiful feet in the hospital. Jenny Versfeld is a picture of courage here
in Rhodesia.
She attends the Karoi Christian Fellowship Church whenever she is able.
Could you spare a few minutes today to pray for Jenny?

Bible Studies
Since travel out in the farming areas is limited to daytime, we find that it is
difficult to contact new people and to visit them at the farms. So we have encouraged
area Bible Studies where we could meet new people who are invited by those living in

the immediate vicinity.

This has proven to he an effective method of spreading God's
Word. On Monday nights we will have the Bible Study in the Village of Karoi, usually
meeting at the Dan O'Connor's home.
We average between 8 and 14 in attendance. We
are studying through the Book of Ist Corinthians.

Then on Tuesday night

we go to the

Tengwe Farming Area

to a new study where we

are going through the first 11 chapters of the Book of Genesis.

The family who has
organized this study was attending the Monday night study in Karoi. Now we have 8 who
are meeting in various homes in Tengwe. We meet early in the evening, have supper, do
our study, then we all sleep there until early morning.

On Wednesday morning Carolyn's Women's Bible Study is also held in the various
homes in Tengwe Area, She has an average of 7 who attend. While Carolyn is in Salis
bury waiting'Tor the birth of our baby / one of-the women will lead thisstudy. They
are studying 1st and 2nd Peter at this time.

Then on Thursday morning another newly organized women's study is meeting in the
Miami Farming Area and I am leading this study in the doctrinal approach of "How to
become a Christian."
We average 9, with S of the women having never been to the
Church services in Karoi. I had never met them before although I knew who they were.

A House <jt Last

We have been looking for a house in Karoi for the past year and a half.
It had
to be presentable, and with at least 3 bedroti'ms.
Finally we found it. The T.E.A.M,
Mission here in Karoi

have a

house but

no work at

the present time.

This mission

works mainly with the Africans in the Tribal Trust Lands but since travel is very dan
gerous out there at this time, they cannot do the work.
So they have allowed us to
rent the house.
The rent is reasonable comp^ired to houses similar

A great deal of planning has gone into this effort.

The African

people

are being educated as much as possible as to the meaning of the election, and being
encouraged by the African leaders in the Transitional Government to vote. Their safe
ty is being given primary consideration. Every able bodied European, Coloured and
Asian man from the age of 18 to 60 is being called into duty to protect the villagers
from intimidation during the time of the elections.
According to a new law, J too
must go and register for duty. In my age bracket, local work, not very difficult will
be required, or prosecution can be expected.
A(.tsr^the_^elections, the new name of
Rhodesia will be Zimbetbwe-Rhodesia,

OCT

Karoi, Zimbabwe-'Rhodesia
September 1979

1919,

Dear Friends in Christ,

AT THE BREAKFAST TABLE seems to be the only time that our family is able to have
daily devotions. One morning after reading from the Bible about the beautiful things
that God has made, Billy spoke up and said, "I know of something beautiful that God
has mademy little brother David."' The two get along very well and when Billy is in
the rooin, David will not listen nor look at anyone else. At 4 months, David weighs
about 14 pounds and is 26h" long. He's been sleeping through the night since two
months. Folks call him "Smiley" because he is so happy and sweet. Billy has grown

building.
This addition has become necessary because of the Bible School that Carolyn
teaches on the open porch or in the yard, while the preaching services are going on.
All of the younger children go out to her and are taught on their level. Ena DaSilva
is now assisting Carolyn with this project. On one Sunday there were 20 children of
all ages.
With the coming of the rainy season, i t will be important to at least have
a

roof overhead.

The men here have faith in their Lord and in the future of this new

country of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia.
WE PLANNED FOR A RECORD ATTENDANCE on the first Sunday of July, but when people
found out that Ivan Martin, fellow missionary from Sinoia was to be here the Sunday
before that, 49 came to hear his sermon from the Word and in song.
On July 1st when
Dale Marshall, the man who started this congregation, was to be here, the people began

to arrive early. Every chair was filled, some of the children were on the floor at
the back with 69 people here. When we first came to Karoi the attendance had dropped
because of terrorist activity to a low of 9, now we average over 30 every Sunday.
For this we give PRAISE TO THE LORD.

AFTER STRUGGLING WITH A FULL COMMITMENT to Christ for'the past 4 years,. Ena
DaSilva decided to obey this command of Jesus' as well as the others He taught.

She

had been christened as a baby and confirmed as a teenager but now as an adult, she

gave her llfe-to Christ in the way the -Scriptures command. Her husband, Mendo, is
considering the same thing, so please pray for him as he considers this most important
step. Working with Internam Affairs, Mendo commands the auxiliary forces in this area.

daddy'was in hospital. He is in Billy's class at school and one of Billy's best
friends. Ken and Prlscilla ask your prayers for their future as Christians and as
.farmers.

WE NOW HAVE 5 BIBLE STUDIES PER WEEK with an average attendance of more than 20
each'week. We had a high In one week of 40--praise the Lord. Carolyn leads a study
for women. Bill leads the rest. The studies are varied, covering from "How To Become

Dear Friends in Christ,

WCH HAS HAPPENED SINCE OUR lAST REPORT to you.

The Lord bets been sending

His blessings down upon us as we labor in His vineyard. This has become evident
by the increase in attendance at the services of the Karoi Christian Fellowship.
Several months ago the average was 27, the next month it went up to 38, the fol
lowing lODnth i t was set at 42, this month so far (1 Sunday; we had 50.
The
Bible School building is up and just waiting for the roofing so work can resume
again and it can be finished before the rains come. Carolyn teaches the little
ones during Church time and will soon have a dry prace to teach them.
The addi
tion is a room 20' by 30' and will jIso serve as a fellowship hall. No Mission
funds will be used in this bui.

BIBLE STUDIES ALSO ON THE INCREASE,

Not long ago we were happy to have 20

adults in study of God's IVord every week, this has now reached 30 per week. And
the Lord continues to bless us as we study.
We have seen Barbara Wilcox, Pricilla
Eva and her husband Ken Eva, Ria Edwards, Lin Ansley, Felicity Krynauw, and Mandy
O'Connor come to the Lord and unite, with him in Baptism, All of these since our
last report.
We can only Praise The iLord.

AFTER MUCH PRAYER we wrote a

l e t t e r to Mr.

in the States.

were told he might be interested in taking, o^^place'dur:^g a furlough.

We

He is

interested in coming, but a bit sooner than we expected".'' But tEe^'tbrd's timing
is better than ours. He plans to arrive here about the first of February, 1980.
Since our funds have be&n very low for the past few months, we feel thai: this is
God's answer to our prayers. We need to return to 'the States to seek additional

.^jiuipport so that we can remain to complete the work*we 'hdve begun. "Jef^ Ken,^e, a
^l^odesian from Kario, is studying for the ministry, ifi ^auth Africa,

Church

here supports him heavily, and he will finish his training in another two years.
He will then come to Karoi to take over the work and i t will become self sustain

ing and self supporting at that time. When this happens we will seek another
place to serve. But until then, it is vital that we stay here in Karoi to build
up the work so that these goals can be met. Bob Ballard will be able to stau

gxjjJl 5 months, so our furlough will only be February to June, 1980.

BILLY AND DAVID are becoming the best of friends. David responds more to
Billy than to anyone else, Billy is 7 years old and David is 7 months, yet they
get along very well together,

David is now able to wave to us as we say bye-by&

and beams all over when we return home.

THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN ZIMBABWE RHODESIA is in. a state of flux.

Every

day news comes to us from the talks in London. Every day the hopes of the people
are lifted up, then dashed to the ground. Yet, by every indication, it will soon

be over although one war is still much with us.

O^L^^^^yer is that a stable gov-'J]

ernment will be in power and the work will be allowed to continue as before.

THE POTENTIAL HERS IN KAROI IS GREAT for the work of the Lord.

began a

personal prayer list of people to whome I have talked about the Lord. It now
numbers 37. Many of these people are receptive to the Gospel now because of the
situation in this country. As the Tribal Trust Lands have been closed, to the
Lord'^s work, the urban areas have opened up more and more.
It is among theseEuropean people that we see tremendous potential at this time. Karoi is coming
alive to Christ and His Church. Maybe you noticed. Ken Eva and his wife Priscilla
were both baptized recently. We spoke about him in our last report, .ffe was shot
by terrorists. He feels that God has spared his. life for a, purpose.

AS WE PREPARE FOR FURLOUGH, please keep us in your prayers.
