Biography
Born and raised on a plot of land off of Cutts road, I had the
opportunity of being knit to the community of Chardon
from my earliest days. The four distinct seasons of our
geography have been engrained in my soul. I know how to
enjoy the heat of the summer months, the colors and
smells of fall, the deep freeze and snow of winter, and the
spring that takes so long to arrive. As a young boy I
attended Park Elementary School, and remember visiting
the sugar house on the square in the spring. I had the
opportunity of graduating from Chardon High and I
enjoyed the camaraderie of being part of the football team
as a Hilltopper. As a young man all of employment
experience prior to graduating from college was through
Chardon based companies.

My Wife Abby & our Son Parker

In regards to my post High School education and

employment I am a Welding Engineer that holds several
welding process certifications. Although, I would love to
pursue art full time, my duty is to support my family and I
currently (and happily) work at Lincoln Electric as a Senior
Product Manager in the Marketing Department. I am
grateful for the manufacturing experience I have as it gives
me a unique approach to my artistic expression. I am able
to carry over my project management skills, process step
planning, and my understanding of metals and the rules
that apply to them, and execute in sculpture form.
The truth is, the community of Chardon has had a
tremendous impact in helping me become the person I am
today, and my time away from the area has further
deepened my pride and love for the community I grew up
in. My love of Chardon has endeared the community to my
wife and we are working to move to the area in the near
future. When I think of home I think of Chardon, and it
would be an honor to contribute something to that would
enrich the community.

Design Proposal Narrative

The proposed free standing sculpture to accent the Heritage House is of a mature & healthy
sugar maple tree that has been tapped to collect the rich sap it contains. (Concept image on
following page) This sculpture stands as a representation of the mature and healthy community of
Chardon and the element that draws us together each year in celebration - syrup production.
The elements of the sculpture are identified and defined below.

Sculpture Elements
The Stone/Boulder Base This portion of the sculpture represents the hill Chardon was
strategically established on. We are known as the Hilltoppers. The community traverses up,
down, and around this hill on a daily basis. This boulder will represent the hill the community
was founded on.
Sugar Maple Tree This tree represents the community of Chardon. Just as trees contain the
character that only comes with the passing of time, this tree stands as representation of the
rich unique character that the community embodies. This portion will be constructed out of
stainless steel. This metal is preferred due to its ability to resist corrosion, eliminating the need
for any annual maintenance. In addition to the corrosion resistant character of stainless steel,
its mechanical properties make it ideal for a public setting. This alloy also adds to the concept
of longevity making a statement that this community is well established and able to stand the
test of time.
The Sap Buckets The sap buckets stand as a representation of the rich life-blood of the
community. We gather together annually to celebrate the hidden treasure of the Maple tree.
In the same manner it is the values and the heritage of the community that make it so special.
At first glance the maple tree appears to be similar to all other trees, but upon further
observation the true richness is revealed separating it from all the rest. In the same manner, at
first glance the community of Chardon may appear to be similar to all other communities, but
upon further observation the vibrance of the community is revealed.

Funding
If approved it would be my desire that the funding for this project be provided by the City of
Chardon as part of the Heritage House project. If this concept is approved and funding cannot
be provided as part of this project it would be my intent to gather funds from two avenues
1.) Local businesses in Chardon - starting with the entities that I have personal
connections with
2.) Crowd Funding if this method is approved I would engage the community through
social media for participation in this opportunity.

Artist Bio

As a boy I had the desire to create, but unfortunately the ability to do so was something I
lacked. I believe that in order to create it is necessary to first perceive and appreciate what
exists. Whether it be color, light, shading, sound, taste, texture, etc., if one is to recreate,
reproduce, arrange, or manipulate a specific media into something new, it is first necessary to
understand & appreciate what exists. This was the ability I did not have. I could not see the
beauty of what was around me, and I lacked the vision to analyze the detail in the wonders of
creation.
My desire to create was coupled with the ability to do so when Christ removed the burden of
my sin, washed the scales from my eyes, and gave me new vision to perceive the amazing detail
of His handy work. I truly was blind but now I see, and my ability to now see has grown into a
love and desire to create. This process began gradually and has progressed down a path
leading through different mediums, finally settling on a medium that suits my background best metals.
My artwork embodies the engineering discipline I was trained in, and the subconscious desire
to escape from the system in which it is applied. The process of escape begins with recycled
materials, my focus being copper and stainless due to their ability to resist corrosion. I use
materials that have had a previous function for two reasons: first, their past life and service to
humanity add character that only comes with the passing of time. Second, their natural
blemishes ensure that each piece will be unique and free from a system dominated by
dimensions and tolerances.
These recycled materials are re-formed into primarily nature based sculptures, using both
primitive and modern techniques. Each piece is visualized and sketched in order to provide a
goal to work towards. The sketch comes to life through the use of fire, electricity, and simple
hand tools.
Nature is the chosen theme, as it is understood and appreciated by all people groups of the
world. Reproducing a metallic version of a soft organic plant, tree, or flower creates bold
contrast, and refocuses the viewers attention on the beauty of Gods creative handy-work.
