1. Gamedescription
The goal of this competition is to provide an event that requires students to use their
imaginationandcreativitytosolvevariousproblemsusingcommonlyavailableitemssuchas
popsiclesticks,rubberbands,andsimpletoolssuchasscissorsandhammers.Thestudents
are not allowed to use any other items or tools. Hence teams with more expensive
hardwaredonothaveanautomaticadvantage

1.1. Therobotmissionchallengeeventstartswiththeconstructionphase.Duringthe
constructionphasechildrenwillentertheconstructionzonewithasetofalloweditems
andtools.
1.2. Thecompetitionwillstartwiththerefereegivingadescriptionofthechallengetask.
1.3. Therefereewillalsogiveadescriptionofthescoringformulausedforthisevent.
1.4. The referee will also announce any special restrictions or rules that may be in effect
duringtheevent.

5. TheItemsandTools
1.1. Beforeenteringtheconstructionzoneatthestartofthecompetition,eachteamwillbe
informedaboutthesetofitems,tools,actuators,andsensorsthattheywillbeallowed
touse.Thelimitationsonthesearenotknownbythestudentsbeforethecompetition.
1.2. The maximumnumberof continuous revolution motors allowedin a challenge will
alwaysbelessthanorequaltofourmotors.ThisincludesstandardDCmotorsormotors
thatprovidepositionfeedback(e.g.,LegoNXTmotors).Thisnumberisanupperlimiton
any robot mission challenge; however, a specific robot mission challenge may further
limitthenumberofcontinuousrevolutionmotors.

1.3. Themaximumnumberofservomotorsallowedinachallengewillalwaysbelessthanor
equal to two servos. This number is an upper limit on any robot mission challenge;
however, aspecific robot mission challenge may further limit the number of servo
motors.
1.4. The maximum number of IR sensors/Photodioda allowed in a challenge will always
by less than or equal to 8 IR sensors. This number is an upper limit on any robot
mission challenge; however, a specific robot mission challenge may further limit the
numberofinfraredsensors.
1.5. Teams are allowed to bring and use their own commonly available tools during the
competition. However, the organizers may restrict use of certain tools if they deem
atoolunsafeorforotherreasons.
1.6. Byallowingatooltobeusedbythestudentin theconstructionarea,theteamleader
certifiesthatthechildrenknowhowtooperatethistoolsafely.

6. ThePlayground

1.1. The makeup and dimensions of the playing field depend on the exact challenge that
studentsmustsolve.
1.2. Duringtheconstructionphase,eachteamcanrequestaccesstotheplayingfieldtotest
their robot. The referee will grant access to the field for short periods of time in first
comefirstservedmanner.Ifachallengetaskrequiressignificantsetuptimefortesting,
therefereemaychooseinsteadtocreateaschedulefortesting.

7. GameRules
1.1. The teams are allowed to bring and use commonly available materials without
restrictions.Suchitemsinclude:
Paper,cardboard,laminatedpaper,Styrofoam,
Popsiclesticks,chopsticks,woodenclothespins,
papercups,paperplates,
plasticcups,plasticplates,
paperclips,binderclips,hairpins,needles,
wires,strings,ropes,
scotchtape,ducttape,electrictape,
pens,
cabletiesinvarioussizes,
rubberbands.
Specialpurposeitemssuchasballasttanks,DCmotors,gearboxes,switches,
propellers,resistors,andremotecontrolsmaybeprovidedbythecompetition
organizers.

1.2. Theteamsareallowedtobringandusetheirowncommonlyavailableandsafetools.
Examplesofsuchtoolsinclude:
scissors,
knives,

wirecutters,
instantglue,and/orwoodglue,
staplers,
screwdrivers,
pliers,
hammers.
Specialpurposetoolssuchassolderingironsordrillsmaybeprovidedbythe
organizersiftheyaredeemednecessarytocompletethechallenge.

1.3. This document lists items and tools separately as a convenience for organizers.
However,theuseoftoolsanditemsisnotlimitedbytheirclassification.Forexample,a
team may choose pliers (designated as tools) to add weight to their robot (used as
items), or use pens (designated as items) to drill holes into popsicle sticks (used as
tools).

8. ViolationsAndDisqualifications
1.1. Only team members are allowed to enter the construction zone or the playing field
duringthecompetition.
1.2. Team members are not allowed to leave the construction zone or the playing field
withoutpriorpermissionofthereferee.
1.3. Any team whose members or associates violate rule 5.1 to 5.2 or 4.4. Will be
disqualified.
1.4. Anyteamwhosemembersuseadditionalitemsexceptthoseasspecifiedbythe
organizerswillbepenalizedbythereferee.Thesanctionsimposedbythereferee
includetimeorpointspenalties(forexample,the finalscoreisreducedby30%),orin
seriouscasesmayalsoleadtodisqualificationofateam.Theseverityofthepenaltyis
decidedonthesolediscretionofthereferee.
1.5. Anyteamwhosemembersuseadditionaltoolsexceptthoseasspecifiedby the
organizerswillbepenalizedbythereferee.Thesanctionsimposedbythereferee
includetimeorpointspenalties(forexample,thefinalscoreisreducedby30%),orin
seriouscasesmayalsoincludedisqualificationofateam.Theseverityofthepenaltyis
decidedonthesolediscretionofthereferee.
1.6. Ateamthatcontinuesbuildingormodifyingtheirrobotaftertheconstructionphasewill
bedisqualified.

9. MethodofScoring
1.1. Attheendoftheconstructionphase,allteamsmustfinishbuildingtheirrobotandbring
ittotheplayingfield.
1.2. At that time, the referee will test theperformance of the robot and will calculate the
resultingscoregiventhescoringformula.
1.3. 1st,2nd,3rd,awardswillbeawardedbasedonthepointscore.

SafetyIssues
Thesafetyofthechildrenisofutmostimportance,hencedangerousmaterials
(e.g.,aggressivechemicals)ortools(bandsaws)mustnotbeused.
