Building Vibrant Cities

Urban Challenges and Opportunities

Projected Investment
In Next 20 Years

India has seen rapid urbanisation in recent times, its urban population
growing from 286 million in 2001 to 377 million in 2011, constituting 31.16%
of the country's population. This is expected to reach 590 million by 2030,
contributing 70% to the country's GDP. According to a McKinsey report, by
2030 India will have 6 mega cities with a population of 10 million or more, 13
cities with 4 million people each, and 68 cities with population of over 1
million each.
The Government of India has announced a slew of new ambitious initiatives:
Swachch Bharat Mission - Sanitation for All by 2019, Housing for All by
2022 and 100 new Smart Cities. These programmes and the gargantuan
growth of urban population is throwing up challenges and opportunities in
the housing and infrastructure sectors for the central, state and local/city
governments, as well as private industry. For the past 11 years
Municipalika, the International Conference and Exhibition on Making Cities
Work, has been instrumental in highlighting pertinent issues revolving
around these challenges and opportunities, sharing best and leading
practices, evolving technological and managerial solutions, and providing
inputs for policy interventions.

Urban Gujarat
According to 2011 Census, the urban population of Gujarat has
grown from 18.9 million in 2001 to 25.7 million in 2011, comprising
42.6% of the state's total population, against the national average of
31.1%, showing growth of 36% in the period. By 2030 Gujarat is
expected to be the second most urbanised state in the country, with
66% of its population living in urban areas. Gujarat today has 4
million-plus cities, and its 8 municipal corporations accommodate
more than half the state's population. The rapid pace of

urbanisation is expected to continue, with the state adopting

policies and holistic initiatives for sustainable and inclusive urban
development. This will continue to create signi cant opportunities
in civic amenities, urban utilities, urban mobility, affordable
housing, real estate development and urban infrastructure. The
state government expects institutional investment of ` 750 billion in
sustainable and inclusive urban development over a period of 5
years (2012-2017).

The Opportunity
The built environment sector is one of the key drivers of the Indian economy,
contributing to 17.5% of the GDP, employing 50 million people, and with over US$
1.5 trillion investment in building and infrastructure in the period 2012-2017.
With the population expected to increase to 1.45 billion by 2020, of which 500
million would be in urban areas, the housing, infrastructure and real estate
requirements to satisfy this growth, would keep the built environment sector
growing at a blistering pace.
CAPEx will be the de nitive one-stop shop for technologies, processes, systems,
materials, supplies, products and equipments for the architectural and
engineering design, planning, construction engineering, safety and quality, MEPF
and operation and maintenance of sustainable built environment.
