It hasn’t been a typical election season.
With giant castle-shaped plywood signs and
calls for narwhals and a Google revolution, the
last month has been characterized by a set of
polarizing and unusual characters.
But it will end today like any other election
season — with a vote.
And because of the oddities of this year’s cam-
paign season, the election seems to be anybody’s
game.
While the outcome seems unpredictable, the
stakes are high. Next year’s president could help
decide how the school addresses everything
from Greek relations and budget matters to
grading policy and a new academic vision for
the school.
The student body president will represent stu-
dents in a variety of ways once he or she takes
office in April, serving on numerous board and
committees — including the Board of Trustees
— and will oversee an organization of dozens of
committees and projects.
He or she will also be given a number of perks,
including a parking pass for anywhere on cam-
pus, basketball tickets, a stipend and a laptop for
the year.
Today’s election, which will see six candidates
contend for the top job, will likely result in a
runoff, as the new student body president must
gather 50 percent of the vote to take office.

Rep. Murtha dies charged in death

— John Murtha, the Democratic
congressman from Pennsylvania
and former Marine whose fierce
opposition to the Iraq war helped
catalyze public sentiment against
the war, died Monday. He was
77.
Murtha died at Virginia
Hospital Center in Arlington,
Va. He had been hospitalized for
a little more than a week with
complications from gallbladder
surgery.
Murtha was known inside
Washington for decades as the
consummate behind-the-scenes
deal maker, an old-line power
broker and physically imposing
figure who unrepentantly deliv-
ered billions of federal dollars to
his home state.
In his later years, Murtha
became a favorite target of critics
demanding an end to Congress’

Court accused Dr. Conrad Murray,
a cardiologist caring for the
50-year-old pop icon during an
ambitious comeback attempt, of
causing Jackson’s June 25 death
by acting “without due caution
and circumspection.”

set bail for Conrad Murray at
$75,000 — three times the stan-
dard for involuntary manslaugh-

Allison Chin, a junior econom-
ics major from New York, applied
for five or six student credit cards
online last semester before get-
ting approved for one by Bank of
America. She was 20 when she
applied for the cards.
“I think it’s really important to
have some form of credit upon
graduation because it’ll increase
your chances of getting approved
for leases and loans,” she said.
Chin said she makes a couple of
small purchases on her card each
month, so she is always able to pay
the balance in full.
While she said she understands
the reasoning behind the new
rules, she thinks they might be a
bit restrictive.
“I think having a credit card with
a reasonable limit is a great way to
learn how to manage one’s finances
responsibly,” she said.
“I think it would be more effec-
tive for the government to regu-
late the credit limit and number
of credit cards people under 21 are
allowed to have, rather than requir-
ing cosigners.”
Students under 21 can still apply
for a card without a cosigner if they
do so before the law takes effect.

Opera singer to perform tonight

With Valentine’s Day approaching
quickly, many recognize the myriad
emotions—joy, angst, melancholy
and humor—that love incorporates.
Opera singer Jennifer Larmore will
perform tonight with a program that
takes the audience through the fasci-
nating journey of love.
Larmore will perform “The
Art of Love” at 7:30 p.m. tonight
in Memorial Hall as part of the
Carolina Performing Arts series.
In tonight’s performance, she
will be accompanied by pianist
Antoine Palloc. The two will per-
form a series of love songs from
America, France and Spain.
An American mezzo-soprano,
Larmore is an internationally rec-
ognized and widely praised opera
performer.
A mezzo-soprano is the sec-
ond highest voice part for women.
Though most people refer to Larmore
as a mezzo-soprano, she can perform
pieces beyond that range too, said
Melissa Martin, a member of the
UNC department of music.
“She has much more to offer as
an artist. She has an extension on
the top of her voice that allows her
to do a lot of the higher repertoire,
which many other mezzo-soprano
artists cannot achieve,” Martin said,
of her ability to hit the high notes.
Larmore is well-known for her
attention to the audience, and she
strives to communicate with them
in each of her performances.
“Something really special about
her is her attention not only to the
singing but to the complete charac-
ter,” Martin said.
This performance displays the
expansion of Larmore’s repertoire
to include more modern songs.
Previously, she focused on songs in
the classical bel canto, or beautiful
singing, style.
She and Palloc performed “The
Art of Love” across Europe before
this tour, but Larmore adjusted
the repertoire for the concert for
American audiences.
“Earlier she performed more
foreign works, but Larmore revised
the show to include more modern
pieces as well as to feature more
American works,” said Harry
Kaplowitz, marketing manager for
the Carolina Performing Arts.
The program contains six differ-
ent acts including “Love: in all its
melancholy and angst!” “Love of
Life!” “The Femme Fatale of Love,”
“Storybook Love,” “Love in its guis-
es” and “Love of the stage!”
In these scenes Larmore explores
the wonder and the anguish of love
through songs by composers from
the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
In addition to this performance,
Larmore will be teaching a master
class to UNC students at 2 p.m.
Wednesday in Person Recital Hall.
Larmore has a passion for educa-
tion, which is emphasized through
her willingness to work with stu-
dents, Martin said.

Haven seeks to stop Women’s Week seeks to
sexual crime at UNC define, reclaim feminism
Training program popular on campus

In 2008, 10 sexual assaults were
reported in Chapel Hill, including
four on UNC’s campus. The Haven
Program is attempting to reduce
those numbers to zero.
Haven is a program dedicated
to educating students, faculty and
staff about issues dealing with
sexual assault. It is operated by the
Carolina Women’s Center, the Office
of the Dean of Students and the
Duke University Women’s Center.
The program has been highly
popular at UNC among students in
its first five years, program leaders
said.
Melinda Manning, assistant dean
of students, received a University
Award for the Advancement of
Women on Monday for her work
with the program, which she
helped found in 2005.
The award ceremony was the
kickoff for Women’s Week 2010, a
week designed to raise awareness
of women’s issues on campus.
Ashley Fogle, associate director
of the Carolina Women’s Center,
said the program’s aims are not only
helping survivors of sexual assault,
but preventing new victims as well.
The Haven program is mod-
elled on UNC’s Safe Zone program,

helping participants to discuss sen-
sitive issues such as sexual assault,
and focus on the social forces
behind them, Fogle said.
Although women make up the
majority of the participants at the
training sessions, the programs are
sometimes as much as one-third
male, Manning said.
The trainings work to teach par-
ticipants how to spot the differenc-
es between good, bad and abusive
relationships. They also help teach
people to avoid potentially harm-
ful situations and how to provide
support for people who have been
through such situations.
The program offers sessions for
students, faculty and staff. The stu-
dent sessions, which take place four
times a semester, sometimes have
40-person-long waiting lists. Fogle
said that the number of trainings
“doesn’t even remotely keep up
with demand.”
The faculty and staff sessions,
which take place twice per semester,
have not been as popular as the stu-
dent programs, said senior Hillary
Winter, an office assistant in the
dean of students office.
She said some faculty members
have complained about the length of
time associated with the trainings, so

SEX 101:
Be your
own sex
educator
T
he only thing I remem-
ber from high school sex
ed, taught by my health
teacher, who was also my driver’s
ed teacher, is: Don’t double-bag
or you’ll have to go fishing.
Wise words to be sure, yet how
do we expect a few classes of gross
slide shows of STDs. And if you’re
lucky, putting a condom on a
banana, to prepare the youth for a
lifetime of good sexual health?
I went to high school in a
school system with so-called com-
prehensive sex education, so if my
memories of sex ed only conjure
up a confused bag boy at Harris
Teeter, I wonder what comes to
mind for my abstinence-only
counterparts?
North Carolina recently passed
the Healthy Youth Act, which
allows parents to decide whether
a child will opt out of the “com-
prehensive” part of sex education.
Now driver’s ed teachers around
the state will have to brush up on
their knowledge of sexual health.
Not to suggest that teachers are
incapable of educating our youth,
but expecting anyone to prepare
young people for such a major part
of their lives in one or two class
periods is laughable.
The vast majority of people will
have sex at some point in their
lives. If you haven’t had sex yet,
chances are you will. While sci-
ence today has made it unneces-
sary to actually have sex to repro-
duce, I’m betting it will remain a
popular means of procreation for
years to come. It’s a great way to
exercise without having to leave
the house and a good stress reliev-
er, as well as a way to connect
with an intimate partner. (Not
to play down the complications
involved with sex, of course.)
But what do you really know
about sexual health?
When you’re ready to take that
step, whose voice do you hear
in your head? Your driver’s ed
teacher’s? Your parents’? Your
religious leader’s? Your friends’?
Your doctor’s? Ron Jeremy’s?
Chances are only one of those
people has any medical train-
ing. Even if your parents sat you
down for “the talk,” are they up to
date on the three new methods of
birth control that have come out
in the past 10 years? Or that it’s
no longer recommended to use
spermicide with condoms?
One of the many great things
about sexual health is that you
don’t have to be a doctor to know
the basics. Try Cosmo for new sex
positions, but if you’re wondering
about contraception or your risk
for different STDs or the newest
developments in the world of pap
smears, there are several ways to
educate yourself.
n  The Internet. For better or for
worse, this is where many people
get their sex info. Check out these
reputable Web sites for info on
STIs, contraception and sexual
health: www.goaskalice.columbia.
edu, www.managingcontraception.
com or www.cdc.gov/STD.
n  The library. Searching for
“sex” in the UNC online cata-
logue gives you 35,929 results,
so try being a little more specific.
Remember to check the publish-
ing date! Information on contra-
ception has changed a lot even in
the past few years.
n  Talk to a sexpert. Did you
know UNC has free and confiden-
tial counseling on birth control,
STDs and sexual health? To make
an appointment with a Carolina
Health Education Counselor of
Sexuality, call 919-966-3658.
Bottom line: Don’t expect
what you did or didn’t learn in
high school about sex to prepare
you for life. Empower yourself;
take control of your health; be
your own sex educator!
And remember, don’t double
bag … or you’ll have to go fishing.

Shruti Shah for SBP
Shah’s experience, honest perspective are impressive
S
hruti Shah should be
UNC’s next student body
president.
Next year’s leader needs an
independent perspective to rec-
ognize student government’s
faults but also the institutional
knowledge to effect change.
Shah has both the vision
and experience necessary to
do this.
She has been involved with
student government since her
freshman year. But she’s avoid-
ed drinking the institutional
Kool-Aid.
She acknowledged that the
bloated cabinet hinders student
government’s effectiveness and
stressed that restructuring the
executive branch will be her
No. 1 priority.
Under her administration,
student government would be
more accountable and more
connected to the student body.
Further, she aptly recognizes
that student government is “not
an events planning organiza-
tion” but rather one that directs
and implements policy.
On tuition, arguably the most
important issue a student body
president deals with, Shah elu-
cidated a practical approach.
She would work to engage
students in the process earlier,
with town hall meetings dur-
ing the fall semester to educate
them on the tuition situation.
And next year will be par-
ticularly important for tuition.
There is speculation among
administrators that the trend
of smaller increases might no
longer be sustainable.
Shah also takes a pragmatic
stance on grade inflation — an
issue the student body presi-
dent will address early in the
term — by recognizing that it
is not an isolated problem and
must be addressed along with
peer institutions.
In her inter view, Shah
stressed the need to set definite
objectives, and she recognized
Finch for CAA
Best to connect CAA to a broader audience

president of the Carolina
Athletic Association.
He has a broad, encompassing
vision for how the organization
should serve students.
And he understands that while
the hard-core fans might be the
loudest on campus, just catering
to their needs alone won’t fill sta-
diums.
Engaging and thoughtful,
Finch has been involved with the
CAA since he was a freshman.
This year, he worked as sec-
retary of the organization, an
experience that gave him a useful
perspective on the inner workings
and management of the CAA.
As a bystander to men’s bas-
ketball ticket policy discussions,
Finch saw how the current policy
was developed and better yet, has
solid ideas to fix it.
While suggesting solutions to
the current policy, Finch strongly

a successful administration.
As many years of student
body president elections have
illustrated, large platforms
do not necessarily predict an
effective administration.
In the end, a candidate’s
temperament and approach
to solving problems are more
important than the bullet
points listed in a platform.
Shah’s interview revealed
an engaging personality. She
defended her ideas with candor.
In this year’s field, Shah stands
out as the clear choice for SBP.
Why not Hardin
Monique Hardin has had
nearly a year’s experience as
current Student Body President
Jasmin Jones’ executive assis-
tant. She knows firsthand what
the workload entails.
She knows the structure of the
University and its problems, but
we’re concerned that she doesn’t
have the necessary executive
leadership experience.
While she is not ready for
prime time, any candidate would
be foolish not to ensure that she
hold a significant position in
next year’s executive branch.
Why not Medlin
Hogan Medlin has run a
formidable campaign and
clearly has both a strong grasp
of the University’s structure
and wide-ranging contacts
— and his extensive platform
illustrated this.
But lengthy platforms do not
a candidate make. Being SBP is
about prioritizing and not get-
ting caught up in every single
campus issue, including many
things that are simply not under
an SBP’s purview.
Medlin has answers for every
question, but they seem intend-
ed to placate voting blocs rather
than to make a statement.

force, made up of undergradu-
ates and graduates representing
students from every corner of
campus.
Finch is clearly an avid
Carolina basketball fan, but he
also understands fan commitment
to other teams. From advocating
P2P shuttles for softball games

Greeks and the Residence Hall
Association to create an impres-
sive, but manageable, platform.
Vote for Finch today because of
his holistic and broad perspective.
He knows what it takes to revive
the Carolina spirit here on cam-
pus.
Why not Kuell
Simply put, Tom Kuell is an
extension of the current adminis-
tration. He does not represent the
cameron parker

While Joe Levin-Manning
has had significant experience in
student government, he simply
has too much baggage to func-
tion effectively as the student
body’s chief representative.
His tendency to polarize,
as demonstrated during his
tenure as speaker of Congress,

trying to build compromise
within student government.
Why not Strompolis
Greg Strompolis focused his
attention largely on two issues:
improving the University’s use
of technology and increasing
its global standing .
However, he was unable to
articulate the major challeng-
es that will inevitably present
themselves next year and how
he will confront them — most
glaringly tuition and budgetary
issues.
Strompolis is an engag-
ing person, but the position of
student body president is not
where his energy should be
directed.
Why not Keune
Nash Keune ran an unusual
campaign, to say the least.
Throughout the past month,
he has maintained the same
farcical persona to highlight
the often frivolous aspects of
the election cycle and false
belief that student government
can be a panacea for the world’s
problems.
While we might agree in
principle with some of his
sentiments about the election
process, his desire to serve as
student body president was
clearly absent.
Electing Keune would strip
even the most basic credibility
from student government —
something the student body
can’t afford.

we find original, concrete ideas in
his platform.
CAA President John Russell
has failed to adequately respond
to harsh ticket policy criticisms,
favoring a minority of zealous
basketball fans over the needs of
the student body at large.
And like Russell, Kuell’s ticket
proposal still does not address
the problems with the current
policy.
While a group option is a great
step forward, the policy would
still be based on single ticket
distribution, which has proven a
failure this year.
In short, it will not fill the Dean
Dome, and his call for a campus-
wide survey on the policy might
not be feasible.
Kuell is certainly passionate
about UNC sports and the CAA,
but Finch offers a broader range
of ideas that will appeal to the
general student body.

Small legal services fee
can do immense good
TO THE EDITOR:
Within two weeks of moving
to Chapel Hill to begin a Ph.D.
program at UNC, I found myself
asking friends for a “good lawyer”
instead of a “good restaurant.”
A dispute with my landlord
had turned into a full-blown law-
suit, and I was in need of some
serious legal help. A private attor-
ney I met with quoted a $500 an
hour fee that I couldn’t afford, at
which point he suggested Student
Legal Services (SLS).
Because I had paid the Student
Legal Services fee, I was able to
use SLS for no additional charge.
The SLS attorney filed a counter-
claim, prepared me for the trial,
and even represented me in
court. After cross-examination of
the landlord by my attorney, the
judge not only dropped the case
but even ordered the landlord to
pay me money instead.
I have learned that an 85-cent
student increase for SLS fees is
up for a student referendum. I
am strongly urging every student
to carefully consider the implica-
tions of voting against it.
Students tend to be young and
on their own, which makes them
legally vulnerable, and legal
problems can sneak up on them
when they least expect it. SLS is
committed not only to fighting
for justice but also to empow-
ering students through legal
knowledge and awareness.
For these reasons I am advo-
cating that the students approve
the 85-cent increase in our stu-
dent legal service fee.

Interviewed women do
not represent all females
TO THE EDITOR:
A rather inflammatory article
was published in The New York
Times over the weekend, show-
casing the unspoken issues of
having a majority of females on
UNC’s campus.
I would like to bring to light
the disturbing message that the
article brought forth. The women
that were interviewed from
UNC’s campus said some things
that made me, as a woman, quite
uncomfortable.
The quotes showed the blatant-
ly shallow thoughts of women who
have succumbed to societal pres-
sures that idealize the need for a
boyfriend, and I’d like to speak out
for the rest of the female popula-
tion at UNC. Although this won’t
be nationally read, it needs to
be said that the vast majority of
the women at UNC can validate
themselves with or without a boy-
friend. The article reflected poorly
on our University, and it devalued
the degrees for which all of us have
worked hard.
The quotes highlighted in the
Times were a blatant reminder of
the days when women attended
school only for their Mrs. degree
that were a reality not too long
ago. I urge the women of UNC
not to allow these outdated and
sexist stereotypes to define who
they are; the focus of college
should always be an education,
not finding a boyfriend.

Article was not neutral
in examining gender gap
TO THE EDITOR:
I am writing in response to
The New York Times article
about dating on college cam-
puses where women outnumber
men. So far, most of the respons-
es to the Times article (includ-
ing that of The Daily Tar Heel)
have focused on the content, i.e.,
the student quotes and the ways
in which they misrepresent the
attitudes of female students on
UNC’s campus.
What in my opinion is far
more incredulous is the overall
structure and framing of the
article. It is extremely telling of
contemporary gender relations
that an article in the Times
about the increasing number
of women on college campuses
would choose to angle this issue
in such a way as to emphasize
the (erroneous) increased power
of men and thus assuage male
anxieties about loss of power in
the social sphere.
This article could have been
structured as a more neutral
exploration of changing gender
relations on college campuses or
as a look at how the “new” demo-
graphics have ushered in an era
of increasing power and new
roles for women at UNC.
Equally important, as
Stephen Farmer points out on
the UNC Admissions blog, is
the idea that there is nothing
“new” about these demograph-
ics whatsoever.
Women have outnumbered
men at Carolina for the last 30

UNC should retain right to
choose necessary classes
TO THE EDITOR:
I sympathize with Olivia
Blanchard in her argument
against lifetime fitness course
requirements in her column
“Just focus on mind exercise,
UNC” (Feb. 5).
But although I agree that the
gradual erosion of personal liber-
ties is a grave problem facing every
person in this country, I oppose
Ms. Blanchard’s sentiments.
By committing herself to an
institute of higher education to
receive a diploma, it is assumed
that she is willing to fulfill the
requirements that the institution
deems necessary for the acquisi-
tion of said diploma.
This is a valid assumption
since by paying for the service,
she has implicitly (and probably
explicitly within some docu-
ment) granted UNC the right to
decide the classes needed to pro-
duce a graduate fitting of a UNC
diploma. She has given consent
to be governed in the realm of
course requirements.
Despite this, she should still
strive to influence change in
illogical course requirements.
This is a noble pursuit. But to
argue that UNC has no role in
students’ physical fitness is tan-
tamount to claiming that the
brain functions exclusive of the
state of the rest of the body.
