The piles must be lifted from the stacking positions only at the prescribed points. If
designed to be lifted at the quarter or third points, they must not at any stage be allowed
to rest on the ground on their end or head. Particular care should be taken to avoid over
stressing by impact if the piles are transported. Additional support points should be
introduced if necessary.
A helmet and its packing are carefully centre on the pile, and the hammer position should
be checked that it delivers a concentric blow. The hammer should preferably weight not
less than the pile. The minimum weight or power of the hammer should be sufficient to
ensure the required resistance has been reached.

When driving to a set criterion, the final set of each pile shall be recorded either
as the penetration in millimeters as per 10 blows the number of blows required to
produce a penetration of 25mm.
When final set is being measured, the following requirement shall be met:
a) The exposed part of the pile shall be in good condition, with damage or
distortion.
b) The helmet, dolly and any packing shall be in sound condition.
c) The hammer blow shall be in line with the pile axis and impart surfaces shall be
flat and at right angles to the pile and hammer axis.
d) The hammer shall be in good condition, delivering adequate energy per blow,
and operating correctly.
e) The temporary compression of the pile shall be recorded if required.
