PHYSICS REVIEWER, 2ND TERM FINAL EXAM

For each problem:

a) Identify all of the forces acting on the object.
b) Draw a Free Body Diagram of the object.
1. A lamp is at rest on a table top.

2. A disco ball is suspended motionless from

the ceiling by a cable.

velocity. Consider frictional forces. Neglect

air resistance.

7. A rightward force is applied to a book in

order to move it across a desk with a
rightward acceleration. Consider frictional
forces. Neglect air resistance.

3. An egg is free-falling from a nest in a tree.

Neglect air resistance.

8. A college student rests a backpack upon

her shoulders. The pack is suspended
motionless by two straps from her shoulders.

4. An egg is falling from a nest but still

accelerating. Include air resistance.

9. A force is applied to the left to drag a sled

across loosely-packed snow with a leftward
acceleration.

5. A flying squirrel is gliding (no wing flaps)

from a tree to the ground at constant
velocity. Consider air resistance.

6. A leftward force is applied to a book in

order to move it across a desk at constant

PROJECTILE MOTION

10. A soft ball as it is being hit by a bat.

Solve the following problems using kinematics equations and vectors:

1. A football is kicked with an initial velocity of 25 m/s at an angle of 45 degrees with the horizontal.
Determine the:
a. time of flight [3.54 s]

c. time to peak height [1.77 s]

b. horizontal distance [62.59 m]

d. peak height of the football. [15.63 m]

Momentum/Impulse
1.

If a car has a momentum of 2.04 x 104 kgm/s and a velocity of 18 m/s, what is its mass?

2.

A 1.5 kg soccer ball is rolling on the ground at 2.0 m/s. A soccer player kicks the ball, giving it
a speed of 12 m/s.

a)

What is the impulse given to the ball by the player?

b)

If the players foot was in contact with the ball for 0.35 seconds, what force did the
player put on the ball?

3.

A 3.0 x 104 kg locomotive is moving towards a 1.5 x 103 kg stationary boxcar at 1.4 m/s.
After the locomotive connects to the boxcar, how fast will they be moving?

4.

A tennis player swings her 1.5 kg tennis racquet at 2.0 m/s at a 120g tennis ball moving in the
opposite direction at 12 m/s. The tennis racquet is moving at 0.50 m/s after the hit, how fast is
the ball moving?

5. A block with mass 60 kg and velocity 50 m/s moving along a frictionless surface collides with a
stationary block with a mass 40 kg. After the elastic collision the first block has a speed 10 m/s.
(a) What is the total momentum of the blocks before the collision? 3000 kg m/s
(b) What is the total momentum of the blocks after the collision? 3000 kg m/s
(c) What is the velocity of the second block after the collision? 60 m/s

Pressure Worksheet.
1. Find the pressure exerted on the floor by a 100 N box whose bottom area is 40 cm by 50 cm.
(use Pa for units)

2. Find the pressure exerted by a waterbed with dimensions of 2 m x 2 m which is 30 cm thick.

(hint: use density of water)

3. Find the pressure exerted on the ground (in psi) by a 250 lb person who is sitting on a chair
whose 4 legs touch the ground with and area of 1 by 2 each.

4. Find the pressure exerted on a 6 ft x 10 ft wall by the atmosphere, if Atmospheric pressure is

14.7 psi.

5. Find the pressure exerted by the atmosphere on a car window which is 30 cm tall and 40 cm
wide if atmospheric pressure is 101,000 Pa. (Remember that a Pa = N/m 2)
