he reason for this trip was the MTB world cup in Pietermaritzburg
in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was only a twohour drive from the racing location to the massive Drakensberg
Mountains. On the mountain plateau sits Lesotho, an enclave, because
Lesotho is entirely surrounded by its neighbouring country South Africa.
From Underberg, the last city on the South African side you reach on
asphalt roads, it is a three-hour ascent on unpaved, bumpy and later
technically challenging mountain roads to the border post on the top of
Drakensberg. The entrance to Lesotho is a continuation of the truck-trail
obstacle course up to the border post. Steep rocky steps require the right
choice of line and a sensitive foot on the brakes. Behind the barbed wire
fence a vast stunning view, barren and deserted wasteland is waiting for us.
Lesotho is an alpine country with 80% of its land over 1.800 metres and
nowhere in the country do you go under a thousand metres. The first
impression of the country is that its a dry and barren place. However,
Lesotho has a lot of rivers that start here, wind through South Africa and
then flow into the sea. In the nearby Sehlabathebe National Park we find
stunning rock formations from volcanic basalt and sandstone. The original
idea for our short trip before the world cup was to take some action
photos of the new downhill bike in the style of bike and riders in action
in front of magnificent backdrop at the start of the season. However,
bike and riders shrink to be very small in this superb panorama.
For mountain bikers Lesotho is full of awesome trails. There are hardly
any asphalt roads and the mountain pass roads have been washed out

forming trails just over two meters wide perfect for rough tread bikes
with full suspension. To go uphill we use the pickup, which has a difficult
time on the ascent with hard working shock absorbers and the underbody
hitting the road. One could have done the 40km tour in about the same
time on enduro bikes, too, with the added enjoyment of some technical
climbs. The following downhill is of epic length and has an endless flow
as long as youre riding a bike and not sitting in a pickup.
With hindsight the trip was so short and so radically different that we only
realized when looking at the photos and videos that we werent dreaming
but we really were in the kingdom of the sky.

The Nicolai fullsuspension frames have seat tube designs that
are different from classic frame designs. They are not in line with
the BB housing. Instead they are moved further to the front on
the down tube. This frame design allows sufficient travel while
at the same time keeping the chain-stay short for maximum
maneuverability. The result is that the actual seattube angle is
relatively flat. To show you that a slack looking seat tube is still as
suitable for long trail riding as the steeper one we have prepared
a graphic with two different bikes showing the two seat positions.
As you can see they have almost the identical position once the
seat post is extended, which means they have almost the same
virtual seat tube angle.

Addiert man diese Werte, erhlt man den maximal mglichen
Sattelauszug von 958mm. Demnach passt ein Helius AC in
Gre L mit 420mm Sattelsttze auch Fahrern mit 920mm
Schrittlnge noch einwandfrei.
Bei klassischen Diamantrahmen luft das Sitzrohr aufs
Tretlager zu. Bei den vollgefederten Nicolai Modellen
tut es dies nicht. Vorgezogene Sitzrohre ermglichen
kurze Kettenstreben fr ein wendiges Fahrverhalten,
lange Federwege und voll versenkbare Sattelsttzen.
Hieraus resultiert, dass der reelle Sitzwinkel abgeflacht
ist. Tourentauglich ist er trotzdem. Das sieht man in der
Bildmontage unten. Die Tourenposition beider Rahmen ist
gleich, der virtuelle Sitzwinkel so gut wie identisch.

Pulverbeschichtet oder eloxiert - Du bestimmst, wie Dein Rahmen aussieht. Die Pulverbeschichtung
ist ein aufgeschmolzener Kunststoffberzug, der deutlich kratz- und schlagfester ist als herkmmlicher
Lack. Die Eloxierung ist ein elektrochemisches Verfahren, mit dem die Oberflche des Aluminiums
gefrbt wird. Die Oxidschicht ist noch hrter und kratzfester als jede Pulverbeschichtung. Zustzliches
Gewicht wird beim Eloxieren nicht aufgetragen. Allerdings kann die dnne Oxidschicht leichter
durchschlagen werden. Mit einer Pulverbeschichtung oder Lack kann man Makel in der Oberflche
verbergen. Kratzer, Riefen und Werkzeugspuren kann man damit fllen und gltten wie Hautfalten
mit Schminke. Eine Eloxierung verbirgt nichts, offenbart jeden Makel; je heller der Eloxalton, desto
deutlicher. An geschweiten Rahmen entstehen beim Eloxieren verschiedene Farbtne. Dies liegt
an den hitzebedingten nderungen im Metallgefge vom Schweien sowie an unterschiedlichen
Legierungen verschiedener Teile. Eloxalbder sind verschieden gro. Nicht jeder Rahmen passt in
jedes Bad, besonders Rahmen mit starrem Hinterbau sind fr manches Bad zu gro. Rahmen mit
gefedertem Hinterbau passen zerlegt in jedes Eloxalbad. In der Liste siehst Du, welcher Rahmen in
welches Bad passt.

Most Nicolai frames come with the 142 x 12mm bolt-through system
as standard. Bolt through hubs are stiffer than quick release hubs.
The Nicolai bolt through system is designed around the 142 x 12mm
standard. Rear hubs with this standard have a hollow axle with an
outer diameter of 18 to 20mm and an inner diameter of 12mm. The
thru axle is attached to the drop out which makes it an integral part of
the rear end. This results in the whole rear end of the bike becoming
considerably stiffer. Other rear axle systems use a fine pitch thread. The
Nicolai design comes with a regular metric 12mm thread that allows an
easy hassle-free mounting even in sandy or muddy conditions. The only
tool required is a 6mm Allen key. If the axle should seize after a long
period of non-use or if the 6mm inner socket is worn out the Nicolai
axle can also be released and mounted with a 17mm wrench. The Nicolai
bolt through system is fully compatible with the Rock Shox Rear Maxle
standard. On most of our frames we still offer the choice between quick
release dropouts and bolt through dropouts.
Headsets have been greatly improved and optimized for different requirements
and applications over recent years, but the designation of the headset has
become very confusing due to the variety of specs. Some major headset
manufacturers have jointly developed a system for the naming and identification
of headset dimensions. The S.H.I.S. - Standardized Headset Identification
System (Complete document available under www.bicycleheadsets.com)
In order to have a clear identification of our headset dimensions we have also
made use of this system.The following dimensions are required:
the inner diameter of the head tube (upper headset cup)
the steerer tube diameter at the point where the stem is fixed
the inner diameter of the head tube (lower headset cup)
the steerer tube diameter at the crown race
The head tube most commonly used in 2015 Nicolai models: ZS 44 | ZS 56
ZS: The bearings are in shells with the bearing located inside the frame which
means they are not visible.
44: head tube inner diameter 44mm -> general term 1 1/8 Zero Stack
56: head tube inner diameter 56mm -> general term 1 1/2 Zero Stack

| GESCHRAUBTE ZUGFHRUNGEN
Our bolt-on CNC machined cable guides look seriously cool and are
available in a range of anodised colours so you can add a personal
touch to your frame. Let us explain the technical reasons that led
us to this solution. Whenever a weld is added to a tube, the heat
changes the metal structure and leads to a marginal weakening of
the aluminium compared to its original state. By using a bolt-on
cable guide we avoid having to weld the tubing unneccessarily and
reducing the strength of the frame. The biggest advantage, however,
is the modularity of this system. Through the choice of various
designs of bolt-on cable guides, we can offer a number of cable run
options. Single mounts, double mounts or angled double mounts.
The offset mounts can be turned by 180 degrees and, depending on
the mounting direction, the cables will leave either at 4 o clock or 8 o
clock. This makes for clean bends and gives a perfect cable run when,
for example, double Rohloff cables are routed along one side of the
steerer tube. The Nicolai cable routing is tweaked to guide the cables
with minimum movement during the compression. This prevents the
wires inside the cable outers coming out of the ends and helps to
ensure long term precise shifting without re-adjustment. The black
machined plastic protector on our chainstays is also a cable guide. It
both protects the stay and the shifting cable from the chain and with
its angled exit puts the cable in a perfect line for the rear derailleur.

If you order a tailor made frame directly at our factory or at your local licenced dealer
the communication about the technical details should always be between the Nicolai
engineer in charge and the future rider. All technical aspects and details regarding a
tailor made order will be handled by Nicolai frame specialists. So after weve got in
contact we will first ask you why you think that you need a custom frame at all. Usually
the reasons have developed from past experiences with other frames. What bike have
you been riding so far? What are the exact measurements of it? What kind of worries
and problems did you have with that bike? Backache or aching knees? A stiff neck
perhaps? These are the first things that we should discuss. Next we will ask you some
details regarding dimensions: Your body size, inseam, arm-length and your weight. What
riding position do you prefer? Do you have any specific requirements? We will then find
out what you are going to use your new bike for: cross country racing, relaxed tours,
challenging trails - or maybe freeriding is your thing? What forks are you intending to fit
to your bike? What components do you have in mind? We often find that with analysis
of the first three points we come to the conclusion that one of our regular Nicolai
frames with carefully chosen components will put things right and custom geometry is
not actually required. However, if we come to the conclusion that we cant meet your
demands with a standard frame then we will work out a bespoke tailored geometry
for you. Of course it is also possible that you are particularly technically skilled, a
professional rider, or just know exactly what geometry or features you require. In that
case we will ask you for a technical drawing containing a complete set of geometry
data. We will, of course, assess your design for any issues with components that we
are aware of and for technical feasibility, and advise you accordingly. However, if the
frame is completely you your specification we cannot be held responsible if the final
outcome does not work as well as our custom tailored frames. When we build a tailored
frame for you we make a technical drawing containing all geometry details and we will
send it to you for your confirmation. You will then have the opportunity to make any
final changes or resolve any unanswered questions. We wont start building your frame
until you give us the go-ahead and have confirmed your personal tailored geometry.
Independently from agreeing the technical details it is best to place a formal order to

needs to finish the 2015 Helius AC shock lever;
much longer than it took to produce its predecessor.
Economically speaking you could question whether its
worth it. As always our goal is to improve the overall
performance of the bicycle frame. The shock lever
has the greatest influence on the kinematics and small
bump sensitivity. We were able to reduce the friction
on the shock lever through the use of roller bearings.
Combine this with a carefully selected shock tune and
the result is a frame more sensitive with endless grip.
This one-piece design also allows us to produce a lever
with really tight tolerances, and a longer bearing life.
Add to this our bearings, which are sealed four times,
you end up with a better feeling bike, with more small
bump sensitivity more grip and low maintenance.
Thats why its worth 28.3 minutes of machine time.

Der Umlenkhebel hat einen groen Einfluss auf
die Kinematik und das Ansprechverhalten des
Rahmens. Durch den Einsatz der Wlzlager konnten
wir die Reibung dieser Baugruppe verringern und
in Verbindung mit dem optimal ausgewhlten
Dmpfer-Tune arbeitet der Hinterbau sensibel
und hlt den Bodenkontakt. Durch die einteilige
Konstruktion lsst sich der Umlenkhebel prziser
fertigen, Lagerpassungen sitzen exakt konzentrisch
zueinander in diesem Bauteil, was wiederum dem
Ansprechverhalten entgegenkommt. Alle Lagerpunkte
sind 4-fach gedichtet, so dass der Lagerwechsel
mglichst lange auf sich warten lsst.

This particular look is achieved through the semi
transparent powder coating. You can see the
history of the production of the frame through
the coating. Nothing is concealed tool marks
and welding seams are clearly visible. The
preparation of the frame is extremely important.
Cooling liquids and lubricants from previous
production steps needs to be meticulously
removed. For the semi transparent look a special
type of coloured powder is needed. This narrows
the colour options down to yellow, green and
orange. The semi transparent coating has the
same mechanical characteristics like the nontransparent coating. It covers the frame with the
same protective layer.
| HALB TRANSPARENT
Dieser besondere Look entsteht durch eine
halb-transparente Pulverbeschichtung. Durch die
Pulverschicht lassen sich Bearbeitungsspuren wie
z.B. Frs-Pfade oder die Schweinhte erkennen.
Hier wird nichts retouchiert. Die Vorarbeit ist
besonders wichtig. Khlmittel und Schmierstoff
Rckstnde mssen akribisch entfernt werden.
Fr den semi-permeablen Look sind besondere
Pulver notwendig. Hier ist die Auswahl auf die
drei Farben Gelb, Grn und Orange beschrnkt.
Das semi-permeable Pulver hat die gleichen
mechanischen Eigenschaften wie das deckende
Pulver. Es legt sich genau wie eine schtzende
Schicht ber den Rahmen.

All NICOLAI frames are equipped with formfitted, re-locatable and exchangeable dropouts to
adjust the toe and camber at the rear end. Using
the adjustable RADO dropouts allows us to reduce
the rectification work on the frame which also
means less stress on the material. The right side
dropouts are marked with the indices -2, -1, 0, 1 and
2 for different camber adjustments. The RADO is
fixed with a pin after the correct toe and camber
adjustment. In case you need to replace the RADO
make sure to check the corresponding index
number. The correct number ensures the correct
toe and camber adjustment even after replacement.

voluminous parts like the yokes of chainstays
and seatstays or parts of the bottom bracket
are normally very heavy. Thats why we
manufacture them in two phases, machine the
inside and weld them together. The result is
hollow parts. This process is extremely difficult
and takes a great deal of time; needless to say
its also cost intensive. But the result justifies
the hassle: the parts are very lightweight,
incredibly stiff and extraordinarily durable.

Das Krzel steht fr Hollow Weld Technologie
und bedeutet, dass wir Volumenteile am
Rahmen, wie Tretlagergehuseeinheiten,
Kettenstreben- und Sitzstreben, Hufeisen, auch
Yoke genannt, in zwei Hlften fertigen, innen
ausfrsen und anschlieend zu Hohlkrpern
verschweien. Dieses Verfahren ist sehr
aufwendig, zeitintensiv und daher nicht ganz
billig. Nur das Resultat rechtfertigt diesen
Aufwand: Gewichtsminimierung mit einer
berragenden Steifigkeit und Leichtbauteile mit
auergewhnlicher Haltbarkeit.

we group manufacture the same models for efficiency.
On the Nicolai website at www.nicolai.net under
Service/Production Plan you will find a link to the
current production plan showing which model we are
planning to manufacture in each week and how many
production slots are still available. If its the case that
the production plan shows no more free slots for the
next 8 weeks then that does not always mean youll
have to wait a long time for a frame. We always have a
small quantity of the most popular models and sizes
on stock. Our licensed dealers and distributors often
place pre-orders and carry stock of common frames
in an unfinished condition as well. This means that
you can often get a frame in your favoured colour
and configuration within a few weeks even when the
production schedule is fully booked.

Plan zeigt auch wie viele Kapazitten noch frei sind.
Wenn laut Plan die nchsten acht Wochen ausgebucht
sind, heit das aber nicht das Du Monate auf Deinen
Rahmen warten musst. Von unseren gefragtesten
Modellen und Rahmengren haben wir immer eine
kleine Stckzahl auf Lager. Ebenso lagern unsere
Sttzpunkthndler und Distributoren oft Rohrahmen
aller gngigen Nicolai-Modelle und Gren bei uns. In
der Regel kannst Du Deinen Wunschrahmen in Deiner

Eine Raritt und ein Hingucker beim RO20 BMX ist die
Scheibenbremse hinten mit der 140mm Scheibe. Auch hier wollte
ich den Schritt zur radikalen Rennmaschine gehen. Denn eine Old
School V-Brake passt nicht ins Bild eines Hightech Renngertes!
Es gibt keine Gewichtsnachteile und in der Handhabung hat eine
Scheibenbremse nur Vorteile. Das muss ich dem MTB Publikum
wohl kaum weiter erklren.
Im Hinblick auf Olympia 2016 werden wir weiterhin am Athleten
und an der Rennmaschine arbeiten. Wer mich kennt wei, dass ich
keine halben Sachen mache und NICOLAI erst recht nicht.
