Abstract
- Interferon
- Ribavirin
- Pegylated IFN
Treatment with interferon (IFN) in patients with acute hepatitis C is more effective than in patients
with chronic hepatitis. It also modifies the natural history of the disease, decreasing the rate of
chronicity. However, the optimum treatment regime, its duration and when it should be indicated
have not been clearly determined. The practical clinical guidelines suggest initiating treatment 8-12
weeks after the diagnosis and although excellent results have been obtained with conventional
IFN, use of pegylated IFN is recommended given its greater ease of use. Combined treatment with
ribavirin should be evaluated individually.
