Culture Documents
To become acquainted with other countries and people, to meet other choirs, to perform
distinguished pieces of music, listen to the best, experience competition and enjoy the
unique atmosphere of an award ceremony these are important incentives for many
choirs to attend international choir contests. Local get-togethers, encounters across
countries or global events like the World Choir Games are able to motivate choirs to
aspire to peak performances. Apart from the artistic and cultural experience of a choir
tour one wants to compare with others, meet the challenge of benchmarking and get a
confirmation of ones achievements.
Politics and cultural institutions have recognized long ago that these choir encounters
represent an essential way of cultural international exchange which has grown
considerably throughout the last 20 years and is gaining more and more importance.
But choir competitions are more than ever in need of competent counselling so that
choirs can continue to benefit from the positive effects they desire.
Bridges of encounter
The INTERKULTUR foundation is a non-profit organisation which devoted itself to
support international cultural exchange comprehensively. It provides more than 100.000
contacts to governments, ministries, choirs and conductors, music groups, schools and
universities, institutions and important personalities. Its official connections extend to
about 140 countries.
Since the first event in Budapest in 1988 the INTERKULTUR contests developed into
one of the most successful movements within the choir and music community in the last
decades. Up to now more than 5.000 choirs with about 250.000 singers from all over
the world participated in nearly 100 international competitions. Over the years the
INTERKULTUR foundation thus has become an organisation which, in the best sense
of the term, builds bridges of cultural encounters - bridges between people of different
nationalities, religions and colours of skin.
Our Philosophy
The INTERKULTUR choir and music competitions are based on the idea of giving all
participants the best possible support for their artistic development. Our philosophy is to
offer international comparative contests not only for top level ensembles but to make it
possible for all groups to compare themselves with others in competition. Regardless of
their current level of achievement every choir can take part on equal terms in categories
that match their level of achievement and their ambitions.
