a ladder series in the laboratory.

Incorporation and Processing Instructions

Wetting and dispersing additives should be added to the millbase. Only this way they can achieve their full effectiveness.
Premix resin and solvents. Then add the additive under agitation until uniformly dissolved. When the additive has been appropriately incorporated, add pigments.
To repair production batches, DISPERBYK-163, DISPERBYK-164 and DISPERBYK-167 are best suited for post-addition. A slow
addition with high shear forces is required.
BYK-331 (see data sheet S200) should additionally be used in baking systems to improve leveling and to prevent Bnard cells.

Function
These high molecular weight additives deflocculate pigments through steric stabilization of the pigments. They provide equal
electrical charge to pigments and thus avoid additionally possible co-flocculation of pigments that are not equally charged.
Due to the small particle sizes of the deflocculated pigments, high gloss is achieved and color strength improved. Additionally,
transparency of transparent pigments and hiding power of opaque pigments are increased. These products reduce viscosity;
subsequently, leveling is improved and higher pigment loading is possible.

Special Features and Benefits

DISPERBYK-161

DISPERBYK-161 is an optimized version of DISPERBYK-160 in regard to product handling. Its molecular weight distribution, polarity and effectiveness are very similar to those of DISPERBYK-160.

DISPERBYK-162

DISPERBYK-162 is used primarily in wood coatings and for the production of pigment concentrates.
DISPERBYK-162 has a slightly lower molecular weight and polarity than DISPERBYK-161.
DISPERBYK-163 is used in many formulations. For new developments, however, the additives
DISPERBYK-2164 and DISPERBYK-2163 (see Data Sheet W235) should be preferred.

DISPERBYK-163

DISPERBYK-163 has an even lower molecular weight than DISPERBYK-162, is less polar and is
used primarily in general industrial coatings and to produce pigment concentrates. It has a wider
compatibility in various binder types than DISPERBYK-161 and DISPERBYK-162. The aromatic-free
version of DISPERBYK-163 is available as the product DISPERBYK-167.
DISPERBYK-164 is used in many formulations. For new developments, however, the additive
DISPERBYK-2164 (see Data Sheet W235) should be preferred.

DISPERBYK-164

DISPERBYK-164 has a molecular weight similar to that of DISPERBYK-163, but is less polar and its
solids content is higher. It is used in pigment concentrates and general industrial coatings.
DISPERBYK-164 does not contain aromatics.
DISPERBYK-167 is used in many formulations. For new developments, however, the additive
DISPERBYK-2164 (see Data Sheet W235) should be preferred.

DISPERBYK-167
DISPERBYK-167 is the aromatic-free version of DISPERBYK-163. It has the same application
properties as DISPERBYK-163.

Special Note
The treatment of some organic pigments can negatively influence the efficiency of these wetting and dispersing additives.
In such cases, tests with the untreated pigment of the same type may be successful.
When using these additives in coil coatings, possible interaction with the acid catalyst must be taken into consideration.
Amine-blocked acids are less suitable than free acids or epoxy-blocked acids. These problems can be circumvented by using
the DISPERBYK-170 family (see Data Sheet W201) instead.
