Elementary Concept Quiz- Mechanics

A block is given a push and say it slides in a horizontal surface. The forces acting on the
block is its weight, the normal reaction and the frictional force "f" as shown in the figure. So
can you explain why the block is not rotating around its center of mass due to the torque
caused by the frictional force...

Fr

This frictional force gives a

clockwise torque Fr*h
around the center of mass

Elementary Concept Quiz- Mechanics

Suppose you have a perfectly calm water in a bucket where a paper boat is floating. In the
boat you have a coin. Now you take the coin from the boat and drop it in the bucket. Will
the water level increase or decrease? (assume you have all arrangements to measure
water level to great precision)

Suppose you are in a boat in a calm lake..you saw a log of wood floating..you pick up the
log of wood and place it in your boat..now tell me whether the water level of the lake will
increase or decrease?

You have two iron bars, out of

which one is magnetized. Tell me
how are you going to find out
which one is magnetized. You are
not allowed to use anything, not
even a thread..you have only the
two bars..

You buy say 20 kg of cotton as shown in the

adjacent figure at door step of your house.
Now suppose you go to Moon with all these
(the common balance, 20kg weight and the
cotton) and perform the same thing. Will
the result be same?

A tall person and a short person are

playing tug of war. Both of them have
same weight, whose chances of winning
is higher and why?

The Monkey and Bananas Problem.

A 20-kg monkey has a firm hold on a light rope that passes over a
frictionless pulley and is attached to a 20-kg bunch of bananas as
shown in the figure. The monkey looks up, sees the bananas, and
starts to climb the rope to get them.
(a) As the monkey climbs, do the bananas move up, down, or
remain at rest?
(b) (b) As the monkey climbs, does the distance between the
monkey and the bananas decrease, increase, or remain
constant?
(c) The monkey releases her hold on the rope. What happens to
the distance between the monkey and the bananas while she is
falling?
(d) Before reaching the ground, the monkey grabs the rope to
stop her fall. What do the bananas do?
