Introduction
Pornography is close to being ahouseholdnameif ithasnotbeenyet.Thepornographyindustry
is a multibillion dollar industry or to be specific it is approximate worth is a staggering
$13billion. Given the nature of the industry, one could become a millionaire simply if their
venture into pornography is a successful one. For example, American pornographic actress and
model, Tera Patrick is one of the richest and most popular female in the adult entertainment
industry. Tera Patrick is well educated and holds degreesinbothmicrobiologyandnursing.The
fact that she made a total sum of $15 millionattheend2013 (therichest.com,2013)provesthat
her liberal thinking pushed her pursuit towards the adult entertainment industry instead of
microbiologyandnursingthuspayingheroffhandsomely.
The pornography industry does however has itsown shareofcontroversies.Theindustry
has drew tons of criticism from many groups but the loudest of them all are from the antiporn
feminists. Stop Porn Culture (SPC) held aconferenceorganizedbyGailDines,asociologistand
antiporn campaigner and the Guardian columnist Julie Bindel, which they describe as a
progressive,feministcollaborationagainstthesexindustry(independent.co.uk,2014).
Another example of criticism faced by the industry is the most recent controversy that
came in the form of a Lebanese American porn star, Mia Khalifa who has received death
threats

after being ranked the number one actress on the adult website PornHub

(independent.co.uk, 2015). Her ranking drew strong criticism from many, including someinthe
Middle East who branded her a disgrace and shameful for she has done a pornographic
scene by covering herself with only withthehijabandthingsweremadeworseassheoriginated
fromaconservativeChristianfamily.
Speaking of conservative countries, Malaysia is a no stranger. The Malaysian
government has taken steps towards blocking certain pornographic websites under the
Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 in order to reduce porn activity in the country. This
act restricts one from sharingpornographiccontentcommercially.Tothose whoarefoundguilty
disobeying the law, they would be either fined not more thanRM50000orjailednotmorethan
1yearorboth(insertsource).

Felixia Yeap, Malaysias first and only Playboy Bunny model happened to break the
norm when she was chosen to be among Playboy Macaus first batch of Bunnies. She sparked
controversies among Malaysians when she started donning the hijab. She explained inherblog:

Based on these facts, one can deduce that most females have 3 common perspectives
when it comes to pornography. These 3 common perspectives are: Liberalism, Feminism and

Whatispornography?
According to Oxford dictionary (9th edition), pornography carries the definition as books,
magazines, DVDs, etc. that describe or show naked people and sexual acts in order to make
people feel sexually excited, especially in a way that many other people find offensive. In
informalusage,pornographyisoftenabbreviatedaspornorporno.
The word pornography originated from Greek in mid 19th century where

them. Pornography is explicit and represents people as objects, while art represents person as
subject and relies on suggestion. Other ways is pornography focusses on sex that is aggressive,
emotionless and alienated, whereas art and particularly in erotic art, love, passion, and equality

between partners are of crucial importance. The bold line that differentiate pornography and art
isthepresentationofwomeneitherasanobjectorasasubjectinanyform.

MalaysiaandPornography
Malaysia is a multiconfessional country with Islam as official religion state in Constitution of
Malaysia and 61.3% of the population are muslim (pewforum). The constitutiongrantsfreedom
of religion and makes Malaysia a secular country, at the same time constituting Islam as the
"religion of the Federation" to embody its importance to Malaysian society. Islamic values has
been consolidatedintosociety
even sinceMalaccaSultanate(14001511)andremainstronguntil
now in Malay culture and custom. In Islam, materials that show the private parts of a person is
forbidden because the religion forbids anyone from looking at them, as it can arouse ones
sexsualimpulsesandtemptonetodotheforbidden.
Malaysian communications and multimedia commission (MCMC) controlling the media
by censored or blocked the media before it publish commercially. Otherwise it consider as
offend againstthelawandcanbefinedunderspreadexplicitcontentacts.InhistoryofMalaysia,
there still no pornographic content allowed to be commercialized legally by MCMC. This
includepornosites,films,music,magazines,toys,photoalbumsandotherexplicitcontents.

FeministPositionsonPornography
The positions of feminists on pornography is currently divided into three common categories.
The most notable one is that the pornography medium is an interpretation where women are
commodified and exploited by a dominant male culture. However the liberalist stand on a
combination of respect for free speech with the principle 'a woman's body, a woman's right' to
provide a defense as wellassupportoffemalesinvolvementinpornographyalongthelinesof,'I

don't approve of it, but everyone has the right to consume or produce words and images'.
Feminists who have been labeled as 'prosex' provide a more grit defense of pornography.

Little to no argument take place between these three positions. As per antipornography
feminists, women who disagree are either brainwashed dupes of patriarchy or apologists for
pornographers. According to the editor of the anthology, Sexual Liberals and the Attack on
Feminism (1990), Dorchen Leidholdt states that feminists who believe women make their own
choices about pornography are spreading 'a felicitous lie'. From the same work, Sheila Jeffreys
pinpoint that 'prosex' feminists are 'eroticizing dominance and subordination'. Free speech
feminists are blamed of identifying with their oppressors 'much like...concentration camp
prisoners with their jailors' by Wendy Stock. Andrea Dworkin branded them of running a 'sex
protection racket' and goesonstatingthatnoonewhosupportsorevendefendspornographycan
beafeminist.

AntiPornFeministsStandontowardPornography
The scope of feminist views on pornography range from disapprovingpornographyasaformof
violence against women, to embracing certain forms of pornography as a medium of feminist
expression. The argument arising from feminists point of view on this issue largely surround
feminist views on sexuality, and is firmly related to feminist argumentsconcerningprostitution,
BDSM, and other issues. Pornography has been one of the most disruptive issues in feminism,
particularly among feminists in anglophone countries. Demonstration occur in the Feminist Sex

For that reason, Islamic scholars stated that someone can only look lustfully at the

Analysis
Based on our analysis and collected data, we have found that women in Malaysian tend to lean
towards feminism and conservatism when pornography is concerned. Liberal women are the
minority among these three categories. These data are calculated based on the questionswehad
constructedpreviously.Thedataareassuch:

Awareness of pornographyamongMalaysianwomenarerelativelyhighconsideringthefactthat
Malaysiaisaprimarilyconservativecountry.

More than half of Malaysian women do not preoccupy themselves with erotica materials. This
showsthatpossessionoferoticamaterialsarestillatabooinMalaysia.

Most Malaysian women do not considerpornographyasa formofartwhereastheyviewpornas

a medium for female sexual abuse. Therefore, Malaysian women are not aware of theexistence
of art in porn, such as the term
erotic art
or beautiful erotica

Malaysian women are openminded when it comes to talking about porngraphy publicly but
most of them do not condone the usage of pornographic sources and materials. Pornography
serve as aninterestingtopictodiscussamongfriendsbutwhenitcomestowatchingpornamong
friends,certainpeopletendtoloseinterestandthesenseofdiscoverytoandwhilewatchingit.

Most Malaysian women do not consider pornography as a guideline for marriage and love
making but they are polarized between considering porn as a form of entertainment or stress
relieve. This shows that Malaysian women differentiate porn sex from reality lovemaking thus
theydonotconsideritasaguidelinebutpornservesthemasaformoffantasy.

Majority Malaysian women argue that porn actresses are portrayed as sexual object in porn
industry. This is in fact because they feel that female rights are being violated to serve male

Besides that, Malaysian women are reluctant to protest even though they are fully aware of the

itcomestovoicingouttheiropinions.

Malaysian women prefer a more female centric porn content because the content is closer to
reality in terms of the romance and love making aspects. This shows women prefer porn that is
closertolifeoverfantasyporn.

The exposure of pornography is high due to the easy access of internet thus allowing young
children to be easily influenced. Based on the data above, Malaysian women are aware of this
situationandrespondtotheirchildrenbysimplyadvisingthemandgoingagainstpenalizing.

According to these datas, religion does not hamper one's viewing of porn, nevertheless, the
presence of any religious device might trigger potential protest in Malaysia. Besides that,
exposed body parts in womensportattiresdoes notserveasanexplicitimagetomostMalaysian
women.

Based on these datas, Malaysian women are not liberal thinking and this could be an influence
from the fact that Malaysia is an Islamic country which forbid the violation of body and open
sex. Culture plays an important roleintheupbringing ofapersoninMalaysiathusgoingagainst
the teachings of a culture is considered a disgrace andscarstheimageandidentityoftheperson
andhis/herfamily.

This question is more to the personal opinion of responders and the data shows that Malaysian
womenprefertoletgooftheirlifeandprotecttheirdignitythantoliveaspornperformer.

Based on the above question, we have collected answers that have concluded that most
Malaysian women lean towards feminism followedcloselybyconservatismandliberalismwhen
pornographyisconcerned.

Conclusion&Recommendation:PerspectiveofMalaysianWomenTowardsPornography
Pornography hasitsownshareofhistoryinoursocietyanditrunsamultibilliondollarindustry.
Speaking of pornography, the word controversy does not escape one's mind hence there have
been protest against the pornography industry from certain groups of female world wide. These
groups of females consist of antiporn feminists that arguetowardstherightsofwomenwhoare
active in the pornography industry. Antiporn feminists believe that female performers in the
pornographyindustryarebeingabusedandtreatedassexualobjecttomales.
As mentioned before, Malaysia is aconservativecountrythathasimplementedlaws such
astheMultimediaandCommunicationacts1993section211/233tohaltthespreadingofexplicit
contents from influencing the country. Although such laws have been implemented,thecountry
isfullyawareoftheexistenceofthepornographyindustry.
Through our survey, we have allowed Malaysian women to express themselves on this
issue by answering a series of questions constructedtodeterminethetypesofgroupstheymight
fall into such as feminism, conservatismandliberalism.Attheendofthissurvey,wehavecome
out with a conclusion that most Malaysian women tend to lean towards feminism (47%)
followedbyconservatism(33%)andliberalism(20%)istheminoritygroupinthisissue.
