tothesescholars,groupsoflowercasteindividualscouldseektoelevatethestatusoftheircastebyattemptingtoemulatethepractices
ofhighercastes.
FlexibilityincastelawspermittedverylowcastereligiousclericssuchasValmikitocomposetheRamayana,whichbecameacentral
workofHinduscripture.
Accordingtosomepsychologists,mobilityacrossbroadcastelinesmayhavebeenminimalthoughsubcastes(jatis)maychangetheir
socialstatusoverthegenerationsbyfission,relocation,andadoptionofnewrituals.

observedconsiderableflexibilityandmobilityintheircastehierarchies.Heassertsthatthecastesystemisfarfromarigidsystemin
whichthepositionofeachcomponentcasteisfixedforalltime.Movementhasalwaysbeenpossible,andespeciallyinthemiddle
regionsofthehierarchy.Itwasalwayspossibleforgroupsbornintoalowercastetorisetoahigherpositionbyadoptingvegetarianism
andteetotalismi.e.adoptthecustomsofthehighercastes.Whiletheoreticallyforbiddentheprocesswasnotuncommoninpractice.
Theconceptofsanskritization,ortheadoptionofuppercastenormsbythelowercastes,addressedtheactualcomplexityandfluidityof
casterelations.
HistoricalexamplesofmobilityintheIndianCasteSystemamongHindushavebeenresearched.Thereisalsoprecedentofcertain
ShudrafamilieswithinthetemplesoftheSriVaishnavasectinSouthIndiaelevatingtheircaste.
Thefactthatmanyofthedynastieswereofobscureoriginsuggestssomesocialmobility:apersonofanycaste,havingonceacquired
politicalpower,couldalsoacquireagenealogyconnectinghimwiththetraditionallineagesandconferringKshatriyastatus.Anumberof
newcastes,suchastheKayasthas(scribes)andKhatris(traders),arementionedinthesourcesofthisperiod.Accordingtothe
Brahmanicsources,theyoriginatedfromintercastemarriages,butthisisclearlyanattemptatrationalizingtheirrankinthehierarchy.
Manyofthesenewcastesplayedamajorroleinsociety.Thehierarchyofcastesdidnothaveauniformdistributionthroughoutthe
country.KhatriappearstobeunquestionablyaPrakritisedformoftheSanskritKshatriya.
