Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Background
Introduction
Back in the old days, Architects, Architecture students and people who have a little
background about Architecture tends to use Manual drafting on their works especially in
Architectural plans. Nowadays some of them prefer to use Computer Aided Design and Drafting
or CADD because it saves a lot of time and it is much easier to create plans. But in a point of
view of some Professors and Architects, Manual Drafting is better than CADD because for them
it can bring out your skill, knowledge and talent in drafting and in making your designs.
However in the point of view of others, CADD is more efficient to use, it can save a lot of time
and also Money wise. As this conflict goes on some of us really wonder what is more efficient to
use is it Manual Drafting or Computer Aided Design and Drafting.
In this paper, the comparison between Manual drafting and Computer Aided Design
Drafting is being studied. It includes the advantage and disadvantage of Manual drafting and
CADD, the efficiency of both in terms of time, money, availability, and accessibility and so on. It
also involves the opinions of Architecture student who have both experienced Manual Drafting
and CADD.

Statement of the Problem

Major Problem: What is more efficient Manual Drafting or CADD?
Minor Problems:
1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:
a. Year level
b. Gender
c. Age

2. Which is more efficient the CADD or the Manual Drafting in terms of:
a. Time
b. Money
c. Accessibility
d. Availability
e. Speed
f. Accuracy
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study deals with the advantage and disadvantage of both Manual drafting and
CADD in terms of time, money, accessibility, availability, speed, accuracy and so on. The
respondents of this study are from Adamson University College of Architecture only. It only
covers third year to fifth year Architecture students. Students in other Universities are not
included in this study. We cannot include students from first year to second year because they
have not taken CADD yet. On the other hand, students who have taken CADD already is not a
limitation for this study. This study can include the professors in Adamson University as a
respondent because they also take up this course and have more experience about this.

Significance of the Study

This study on the Comparison of Manual Drafting and Computer Aided Design and
Drafting will dictate what is best for the enhancement of the design and plans of a student and
Architects also what will help them to improve their works.
To the Architecture students, this study will benefit the students on what they can use
to make their works clean and precise. It can give them an idea on what is the efficiency of both
Manual drafting and CADD. This study also helps them to see the advantage and disadvantages
of the two.

To the Professors, this study will benefit to the Professors on whether they will
consider the student to use CADD on their works or just simply stick to the traditional Manual
drafting. Through this study, they can compare on what is more helpful to use for their students
especially in making a floor plans.
To future Researchers, this study will benefit the future researchers. For it will be
their guide to help them develop another research. The study can also open in the development of
study.

Definition of Terms
The following terms are used in the study:
1. Architecture - the art or practice of designing and constructing buildings.
2. Architectural Works - is the design of a building as embodied in any tangible
medium of expression, including a building, architectural plans, or drawings.
3. CADD (Computer Aided Design and Drafting) is the use of computer systems
to assist in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design
4. Design - An idea that takes the parts of a structure and turns them into a whole
system. This is done with objectives and limitations.
5. Drafting - is the act and discipline of composing drawings that visually
communicate how something functions or is to be constructed.
6. Floor Plans - a scale diagram of the arrangement of rooms in one story of a
building.
