Detained for
Kidnapping
Earthquake Victims
A group of 10 missionaries
from New Life Children’s
Refuge, an Idaho-based
charity, were detained after
attempting to take a busload
of children from their native
Haiti. The missionaries claim
they were merely trying to
help the children, whom they
claim have been orphaned
and abandoned since the
Jan. 12 earthquake hit the
impoverished nation.
The Americans allegedly
attempted to carry 33
children, most of who come
from the quake ravaged
village of Callebas, across
the border and into the
Dominican Republic without
proper documentation on
Jan. 29. While the accused

to assist orphans in good
faith, interpreters claim that
they were present when the
missionaries spoke with the
parents of these children

announced it would also recall
the 2010 Prius - which went
on sale in May 2009 - and has
had problems with its braking
system. After both Japanese
and U.S. governments
launched investigations, the
decision was made to recall
the car.
Toyoda said however,
that the new Prius – now in
the showroom – includes an
improvement.
“For Prius in the hands of
customers, I have instructed
that consideration be made as
soon as possible regarding the
way to address such units,”
Toyoda said. “Once a decision
is made we will inform the
public.”
But owners like Joseph
Fabian of New Jersey, remain
furious over the manner in
which Toyota has handled the
recall.
Fabian, who has been
a loyal repeat customer,
was quoted in the Christian
Science Monitor as saying
he’d been ticked off about
previous recalls and that his
current vehicle, a 2010 Prius,
might be his last Toyota
purchase.
“They kind of pushed
me away, telling me I didn’t
have anything wrong with it
because it wasn’t on the recall
list,” he said. “They said they
weren’t going to look at the
system because, ‘We’re too
busy with the recall.’ “

Trial Underway in Drag Racing Accident Tea Party

Darren Bullock, 22, and
Tavon Taylor, 20, are having
their days in court over their
alleged roles in a 2008 drag
racing accident that killed
eight people and injured five
others.
The two natives of
Waldorf, Md., are believed to
have been racing each other
in the early morning hours of
Feb. 16, 2008, on Indian Head
Highway in Accokeek, Md.
A large crowd was gathered
on the highway to watch a
different illegal street race on
the dark road. The two men
are alleged to have driven into
that crowd.
Bullock decided to forgo
his trial and pleaded guilty
to eight counts of vehicular
manslaughter Jan. 29.
“Today’s plea will not
bring back the lives of those
killed on that tragic day, but
today’s conviction holds
Darren Bullock accountable
for his actions,” said Prince
George’s States Attorney
Glenn Ivey in a Jan. 29 press
release. “The guidelines of
this case were probation [up]
to four years. Mr. Bullock will
be sentenced on March 1 to 15
years in prison for vehicular
manslaughter.”
Taylor, on the other hand,
decided to take his chances in
court. Taylor’s trial, which
began on Feb. 1 has already
seen its fair share of fireworks.
On Feb. 2, the 9-1-1 tapes
of the night in question were
played in a courtroom full of
family members of the victims
who were killed that night.
“One guy lost a foot. There
might be a couple dead,” said
one woman in the crowd who
called 9-1-1.
“These people are torn,”
said a man who drove by the
accident scene.
“You mean there
are people who are
dismembered?” a dispatcher
responded.
“Yes,” the motorist replied.
Taylor’s lawyer contended
that he was there as a witness
on the night of the accident,
not as one of the racers.
The trial was suspended on
Feb. 4 and is set to continue
sometime this week.
The AFRO will provide

of the Memphis Tea Party,
told CNN that Tancredo’s
comments don’t “further the
dialogue.”
Such disagreement is
typical for the movement,
which is stymied by
divergent opinions on its
character—grassroots or more
organized—and identity—
whether it should be tied
to the Republican Party or
independent.
“The current form of
this movement is fresh and
young and fragile,” said 2008
Republican vice-presidential
nominee Sarah Palin in
a keynote address at the
convention, according to the
Wall Street Journal. “Let us
not get bogged down in small
squabbles. Let us get caught
up in the big ideas.”
The prospective 2012
Republican presidential
candidate addressed more
than 1,000 Tea Party attendees
on the night of Feb. 6, calling
their movement, “the future of
American politics.”
Palin is viewed as
a rising voice in the
movement, typified by her
speech Saturday and her
public endorsement of the
conservative campaign.
However, in her 40-minute-
long speech, Palin played
down any presidential
aspirations, despite the crowd
chanting, “Run, Sarah, run,”
according to the Politico.
Palin also lashed out at
congressional Democrats and
President Obama, harshly
criticizing their management
of the economy and what
she called a lax stance on
terrorism.

Fenty’s Black Approval Ratings Nosedive
Rhee favors strongly in Fenty disapproval

Mayor Adrian Fenty’s
popularity among the Black
community in Washington is
in limbo.
With the mayoral election
slated for later this year,
whether Fenty can reclaim
the overwhelming vote of
confidence from Blacks that
landed him at the District’s
helm in 2006 remains
questionable.
The District is more than
50 percent African-American.
But the community claims that
Fenty, a Black Democrat, has
lost touch with it, and given
the debacles surrounding
School Chancellor Michelle
Rhee, the likelihood of him
gaining the Black vote again
appears slim.
“For one thing, I haven’t
seen him a around here since
he was elected,” said James
Barmore, a barber in Northeast
Washington.
He also criticized Fenty
for remaining quiet during the
months-long debate involving
Rhee.
“She’s definitely caused
him some big problems,”
Barmore said. He added that
it comes as no surprise Fenty
still has the support of White
community. “They should
support him,” Barmore said.
“After all, they’re the ones
he’s been mostly working for.”
According to a Washington
Post poll released in January
and conducted among a
random sampling of 1,135
adult respondents, Fenty’s
overall approval ratings have
plummeted over the past two
years, with African Americans
expressing the most dismay.

him credit in just one area –
his efforts in 2008 at crime
reduction.
But considering the
sentiments of his White
supporters, Fenty hasn’t
exactly scored an “A” in that
area because they feel it was
the residents themselves,
who played a large part in
decreasing crime in their
neighborhoods.
The Post poll additionally
found that Blacks’ support of
the first-term mayor has gone
from 68 percent approval
after his first year in office to
65 percent disapproval as of
January. The poll also found
that overall, 42 percent of
residents approve of Fenty’s
performance and that about
of half of those polled have
problems with his honesty,
empathy and openness.
Kathy Henderson, a
former Ward 5 Advisory
Neighborhood Commissioner,
said the Black community
has been concerned about
the direction in which Fenty
is headed. For example, in
her ward, residents were
upset after Fenty decided to
endorse a shelter for women
with substance abuse issues
that would be in the midst
of an area known for drug
trafficking. Henderson said
for that reason, Fenty has
appeared to be indifferent to
the needs of the community.
“There’s no way you
should put vulnerable women
in that kind of environment,”
Henderson said. “When you
look at that kind of policy
and you magnify it citywide,
there’s a lot of discontent.” She
said Fenty has an opportunity
to re-evaluate his strategy and
to start to reconnect to the
people if he chooses.
But, as for the imbroglios
involving Rhee, Henderson
said she believes they will
negatively impact the mayor’s
chances for re-election.
“I think so because
even though people
overwhelmingly gave Fenty
an endorsement to [improve]
the schools, which he said
he could do, Ms. Rhee
has not been the kind of
superintendent that the system
really needs. “
Henderson further stated
that Rhee’s statements on
teacher firings – including those
in which she alleged some
teachers engaged in sexual
misconduct with students –
were damaging to Fenty. “It
just makes for bad public
relations,” Henderson said.
On that note, Richard
Wexler, a strong critic of the
mayor for his handling of
issues dealing Black children
in the care of the troubled
Child and Family Services
Agency, said Fenty’s record
specific to child welfare has
been dismal — and that the
District’s vulnerable children
have been made significantly
worse because of the mayor’s
machinations.
“It’s been appalling,”
said Wexler, “and what’s
interesting in connection with
the Post poll is that a lot of the
discontent with the mayor has
been over symbolic issues and
his personal style.”
Wexler said that in the
case of CFSA, Fenty can’t
separate style from substance.
However, “His egomaniacal
approach plunged that agency
into chaos and then he turned
around and claimed credit for
partially undoing the damage
that he did in the first place,”
Wexler said.

Officials in Prince George’s
County are working diligently
to educate residents on the 2010
census. Typically, the county has
performed favorably compared to
some of the other local jurisdictions,
but it is taking no chances with
informing the public.
“An undercount could possibly
be a loss for us and we don’t want an
undercount,” said Cheryl Harrington,
head of Prince George’s County’s
Complete Count Committee. “We
are putting forth all our effort to
make sure we have a complete count
in Prince George’s County.”
Harrington says a formula used
by the federal government says one
person going uncounted is a $1,200
loss for the county. That equates
to $12,000 over the 10 year period
between census counts.
Given the current state of the
economy and the reductions in aid
to the Prince George’s County in
Gov. Martin O’Malley’s recent
budget, the need to make sure the
county gets a full count is greater
than ever. To make sure that occurs,
Harrington says Prince George’s is
taking unprecedented steps to inform
the public.
“The county executive has
formed a Complete Count
Committee,” she said. “It’s a group
of citizens who are invested in the
community. We’ve further broken
that [committee] into five sub-
committees in an attempt to reach
every person living in the county.”
In 2000, the census played a
huge role in changing the shape of
Maryland’s Legislature. Ten years
ago, Maryland’s 47th legislative
district was in Baltimore City and
now, after, a good showing by Prince
George’s and a lackluster showing in
Baltimore City, the state’s last voting
district belongs to Prince George’s
County.

district and he is very aware of
the importance of census and the
changes it can bring to communities.
“It’s vitally important that we
get counted,” Sen. Harrington said.
“All the money that goes to schools,
roads, redistricting, and proper
representation all derives from the
census.”
As a direct result of the last
two census counts, the county has
received over $30 billion in federal
funding. However, according to Sen.
Harrington, those numbers would’ve
been greater had the county not been
undercounted.
“We had a 68 percent return rate
on the census which meant that one-
third of the county was not counted,”
he said. “If you look at $4,000 per
household, that’s a tremendous
amount of dollars the county didn’t
get because we were undercounted.”
Sen. Harrington, who is the
former mayor of Bladensburg,
believes much of the legwork will be
done on the municipal level as was
done 10 years ago when he held his
mayoral position.
“We reached out in our newsletter
and we reached out in our televised
community meetings,” said Sen.
Harrington. “There’s even a stronger
effort to reach out to municipalities
and civic groups this year.”
This time around, county officials
believe the biggest hindrance to
getting a complete count is the fact
that people believe the census is
invasive.
“We really need to let people
know that it’s a safe process,” Sen.
Harrington said. “People think it’s
intrusive and we have to do a better
job of reassuring people that it’s
confidential.
This concern is especially
applicable when it comes to the
county’s growing immigrant
population.
“[Immigrants] might be the most
reluctant,” Sen. Harrington said.
“Reassurances have to be made
that this is not about whether or not
you’re a citizen. This is about being
counted.
“We have a federal mandate to
educate every child. If you’re not
sure about the count of the children
in your area then that can lead
to overcrowding in some places
and none of the resources. It’s
very important that our immigrant
population participates.”
Sen. Harrington says that because
the county’s immigrant population
is so diverse, the county has to
do whatever it takes to reach its
immigrant population.
“Our immigrant population in
Prince George’s County is extremely
diverse,” he said. “We’re trying to
use every organization and contact
that we have that will be able to
convince the many immigrants that
we have to participate.”

the issues that the District of
Columbia faces,” Brown said.
“I welcome the challenge and
hard work ahead of us for we
owe the District no less than
to lead the charge and make
this the best count possible.”
Every 10 years the U.S.
Census Bureau counts the
number of people living
in the United States. A
questionnaire, which will
be mailed to residents in
March, seeks information on
the number of residents per
household, their ages, races
and homeownership. April 1
is the cut-off for mailing back
the forms.
According to the last
count, 1.4 million households
existed in the District and
about 60 percent participated.
However, the 2000 count
missed thousands of District
residents from difficult-to-
reach populations which
largely included African-
American communities. But
also listed among the missed
count were the homeless,
immigrants and families that
were not proficient in English,
according to census data.
Funding allocations from
the 2000 census covers the 10-
year period from 2002 to 2012,
and because of its undercount,
the District will lose as much
as $1.14 million for that
time frame, a Census Bureau
worker told the AFRO.
To help encourage greater
percent participation among
households, the City Council
has established a committee
comprised of more than 70
residents and members of
community organizations that
represent each of the city’s
eight wards. Assisted by other
campaign leaders, they will
collectively collaborate with
the mayor’s office and the U.
S. Department of Commerce.

law, the agency is prohibited
from doing so — meaning
that the information would
not even be available to
other federal agencies or law
enforcement.
Armstrong also said
that census employees are
looking into a variety of ways
to convey to residents the
importance of participating,
which includes empowering
churches and schools to
spread the message.
In the cases of residents
who fail to respond, the
Census Bureau will hire
thousands of temporary
workers to go door-to-door
to count every man, woman
and child. The results will not
only determine distribution
of much-needed funding, but
will also serve as a basis for
congressional representation.

“It’s my duty,” he
said. “The census lets the
government know that we’re
here, that we’re alive, so that
D.C. won’t just get benefits
for 200,000 people when
there’s actually more than
500,000 of us.”

Oprah Winfrey
Born January 29, 1954,
the talk show mogul garnered
huge TV ratings almost
from the start, and cut into
viewership of rival talk show
hosts including Phil Donahue
and Sally Jesse Raphael to
climb to the top.
Winfrey is ranked among
the most influential women
in the world, and was
distinguished in 2005 by
Forbes as the world’s only
African-American billionaire.
Her show is currently in
its 25th year, but Winfrey
recently announced that
she’s calling it quits after this
season.
Winfrey is also a
magazine publisher and
highly respected book critic
whose reviews have jump-
started the careers of many
authors. The big-hearted host
also has a flair for dramatic
roles, and has gone on to
become a credible actress,
starting with the mid-
1980s role of Sophia in the
acclaimed movie, “The Color
Purple.” She also founded the
TV network, Oxygen.
But the Kosciusko, Miss.,
native came from meager
beginnings and a deprived
childhood. Her parents
were poor unwed teenagers
who later worked jobs as a
housekeeper and barber. At
age 14, Oprah, herself still a
rebellious teen, gave birth to a
stillborn son.
Because she possessed
a strong interest in books
and developing her oratory
skills, Winfrey leaned
toward education. While
in high school, she won an
oratory contest and the Miss
Black Tennessee beauty
pageant. She also won a
scholarship to Tennessee
State University where she
studied communications. But
Winfrey didn’t receive her
undergraduate degree from
the school until well after her
career had developed into full

generously to charities, and
as an education advocate,
opened a school for girls in
South Africa. In late 2009,
she provided a $1.5 million
gift for an inner city school in
Atlanta.
Beyoncé

gone the extra mile in her
journey to the top of the
entertainment world.

Beyoncé was born on Sept.
4, 1981 in Houston, Texas. As
a perky pre-teen, she launched
her singing career with the
all-girl R&B group Destiny’s
Child. The group started out
performing around Houston
and released their first, self-
titled hit record in 1997. The
album garnered three top 10
hits on the Billboard R&B
singles chart.
But internal conflict
led to the original trio’s
breakup in 2000. The group
released the following year
to release their third album,
“Survivor,” and in 2004,
Beyoncé launched her solo
career with Dangerously in
Love, followed by B’Day in
September 2006 to coincide
with her 25th birthday.
Beyoncé also performed
the Etta James classic, At
Last, during one of President
Obama’s inaugural balls. She
has won numerous industry
awards, including a Golden
Globe nomination for her
acting ability and an Oscar
for the song Listen, which
she recorded for the movie
Dreamgirls.
As an up-and-coming
businesswoman, Beyoncé
currently partners with her
mother Tina Knowles for
their ready-to wear House of
Dereon fashion line, and with
her sister Solange Knowles
for her Dereon line of
clothing. In December 2009,
Beyoncé launched her first
fragrance, Beyoncé Heat.
In 2008, Beyonce married
hip-hop mogul Jay-Z, whose
real name is Shawn Carter.

Banks was born on Dec. 4,
1973 in Inglewood, Calif., to
a mother who was a medical
and business photographer.
After completing high school
at age 17, the effervescent,
but aggressive, Banks dived
into a full-time career with the
Los Angeles modeling agency
Elite.
In an interview with
“Biography: The True Story,”
Banks said she first developed
an interest in modeling
because she often held her
mother’s light meters and
reflectors on photo shoots.
“My mom would bring
me into the darkroom, which
was on our back porch, and
develop the film,” Banks said.

However, she had enough
confidence in herself that at
age 20 she became just the
third woman of color to sign
a contract as a spokeswoman
for Cover Girl cosmetics.
Banks, best known for her
work with Victoria’s Secret,
was also the first Black model
featured on the covers of
GQ magazine and the Sports
Illustrated swimsuit issue.
With those successes,
Banks received all the
rewards and accolades from
being a first-class model.
But she still aspired to take
her talents into the homes of
Americans across the country.
“I never lost the dream
of being in TV. When I hit
32, I said, ‘Let me leave this
industry [modeling] before
it leaves me,’” Banks told
“Biography.” “I didn’t want
to be like those boxers who
continue to get beat up and
say they’re going to retire,
but they don’t, and then their
legacy is marred. I wanted to
leave on top.”
And she did, successfully
making the transition from the
catwalk to Hollywood, where,
having won two Emmy
Awards for her talk show,
Banks has remained at the top
of her game.

A Request From Heaven To
President Obama
Don’t Forget The
Race Issue Since the passing of A.
Michael Higginbotham Leon Higginbotham Jr. in
1998, many have wondered
what the award winning author, longest serving Black
federal judge, first Black to head a federal regulatory agency,
recipient of the Spingarn Medal and the Congressional Medal
of Freedom, and author of the famous “Open Letter To
Clarence Thomas,” would think of the state of race relations
today. Appointed to the Federal Trade Commission in 1962,
Higginbotham served in several powerful federal positions
including vice-chair of the Kerner Commission, member
of the first wiretap surveillance court, and Chief Judge of a
United States Court of Appeals. Known as the conscience of
the American judiciary on race issues, Higginbotham caused
controversy in 1992, when he publicly reminded Justice
Clarence Thomas of his predecessor’s contributions to racial
equality. In the 18 years since this first public letter, much
progress has been made, including Higginbotham’s former
student, Michelle Obama, becoming the first Black “first lady.”
As a law professor related to Higginbotham, who worked
closely with him, I feel compelled to share “his letter” to
President Obama after one year in office.
Dear President Obama:  representation. If true equality is ever to be achieved, the
Congratulations on completing your first year as president
and on your healthcare legislation progress. While others have
tried, you are the first to get this far. In these tumultuous times,
your job is of vital importance. The unemployment rate is the
highest it has been in over 25 years. The nation is involved in
two military conflicts. The incarceration rate is the highest in
the world, and the American people are divided. The country
desperately needs a unifying leader, because there is another
monumental problem – this one of longstanding stature – that
also must be addressed, racial inequality.
No doubt, your inauguration ended an era in American
history. When I arrived at Yale Law School as a student in
1949, a Black janitor hugged me, with tears in his eyes,
exclaiming that he was just so happy to see a Black face in the
student body. Many years of experience however, taught me
that it takes much more than positions and accolades to impact
inequality that has persisted for centuries.
Neither your swift rise to the Presidency, nor the presence
of any minority in a position of power, marks the end of
racism. Black unemployment, incarceration, and poverty rates
are twice that of Whites. Overt racism, expressly sanctioned
by laws, has given way to covert racism, tacitly approved
through “colorblind” policies and “race neutral” programs.
Inequality is caused and maintained by choices that result
in inadequate anti-discrimination laws, inequitable school
funding, education deficiencies, housing isolation, economic
exploitation, criminal justice stereotyping, and political under

Each year our country dedicates the month of February to
celebrate the many accomplishments of African Americans
and recognizing their extensive contributions to a diverse
American society. Black History Month is a time to reflect on
the advancements African Americans have made in this country
and show respect to heroes of the past while acknowledging
the leaders of today who will guide our country to even
greater things. The Republican National Committee honors the
countless successes and sacrifices that African Americans have
made and continue to make to help the United States remain the
greatest country in the world.

“hearts and minds” of the American people must change first.
Your 2008 Father’s Day speech encouraging Black male
familial responsibility was inspiring. Without a serious
change in how Blacks view their own destinies (as being
at least to some extent out of their control due to racism),
it will be impossible to resolve the race issue. You should
also remind Whites that White privilege must stop. A failure
to acknowledge structural racism, white isolationism and
overvaluation, ignores the reality of current race relations.
The debate over affirmative action provides a prime
example. Five states, including California and Florida,
have forbidden race from being used as a factor in public
college or university admissions. Yet, these same states allow
a preference for children of alumni even when Blacks were
excluded from those schools in the past or did not attend
in large numbers. Under such circumstances, prohibiting a
preference for under-represented Blacks, while permitting a
preference for children of mostly-White alumni, exacerbates
racial disparities, even though on its face it appears race-
neutral. 
In your 2008 campaign speech from Philadelphia, you
called for a new conversation on race. Since then however,
with the exception of the profiling incident involving
Cambridge, Mass. police officer James Crowley and Harvard
Professor Henry Louis Gates, and the controversy surrounding
inappropriate language about your candidacy by Sen. Harry
commemorate the White Americans that lost their lives, risked
their careers, and jeopardized their livelihoods for the sake of
equality under the American legal system.
We are fond of Blacks, who were inventors, politicians,
activists, and sportspeople, but we fail to mention publicly
the White Americans that lost or almost lost their families,
lives, and income in order to make sure that the consciences of
majority of Americans in government, congress, and Supreme
Court were challenged to take up the true mantle of equality
and justice for all. Black progress and inclusion into American
society would not have taken place without those godly, peace
loving, and progressive White Americans that came out to
demand that America lived up to its creed.
Despite the fact that America is yet to tackle the issues of
police brutality, racial profiling, and Black unemployment,
Black America must publicly celebrate the Whites and Jews
that also fought for equality for all, such as the Kennedy
brothers and those in the Freedom Riders. White Americans are
the majority, so the success and failure of America rest in their
hands. A show of public gratitude for their courage will go a
long way towards making America a greater nation that allows
Blacks to contribute to America with a peace of mind.

to continue the conversation on race even as you grapple with

Michael Higginbotham, Judge Higginbotham’s nephew,
is the Wilson Elkins Professor of Law at the University of
Baltimore and is the author of “Race Law,” a book dedicated
to Judge Higginbotham. This “request” articulates the
author’s best judgment as to what Judge Higginbotham might
have felt and written had he been living today.
Reparations Legislation Needed
On June 18, 2009, the United States Senate apologized to
Afro-descendants (African Americans who have an ancestor
who experienced the period of enslavement and Jim Crow
segregation) for the enslavement of our ancestors and for Jim
Crow segregation. The author of the apology, Sen. Tom Harkin,
D-Iowa, stated following the apology, that “the real work lies
ahead.”
N’COBRA (National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in
America) beleives that “real work” can begin with the passage
of House Resolution 40, known as the Reparations Study Bill.
This is needed, along with the passage of a companion
Senate bill, to move America forward in regards to race
and racial relations. We also believe that the Senate
companion bill will have added historic and symbolic
significance if it is originated out of the state of Illinois.
Reparations is the cross-road solution to our human capital
infrastructure in the context of a Reparations Accord for
Blacks in America as a matter of public policy.

the Tea Party phenomenon
and watching its recent
convention, it was interesting
to see media folks and Tea
Party representatives struggle
with the question of why so
few Blacks were there. This
is not a new thing since the
philosophical base of the
Republican party has been
the Conservative movement
for some time and their
conventions have also been
lily white. But the emergence
of the Tea Party phenomenon
should cause us to ask how
far it is from bonafide anti-
Black White nationalist
politics striving to enhance its
role in the political system.

Black History Month? The
writer might be White, or she
might not. She identifies her
self as a “conscious woman”
and sends the e-mail to one
of my public addresses. She
seems chagrined that “race
still matters” and wants to
initiate an exchange of views
with hers at the foundation
– studying Black history is
obsolete. We have a Black
president, the woman writes.
Black people have made so
many strides. Aren’t you
holding on to the past, she
argues, when you insist on
having this month to study

Appearing on television
and radio is good for my
career. Every time I show up
in the media it sells books
and further legitimizes me
as a cultural and political
commentator and answers a
question that, alas, has been
asked far too frequently of
late: “Whatever happened to
...”
Last week I canceled
an appearance at the last
minute in order to attend my
youngest son’s gymnastics
movement as a resurgent
mobilization of “the
American people” but
when you listen to them
say who they are, there
are distinct traces of the
Republican Party in their
approval of “limited or small
government,” “national
security,” opposition to
social spending and large
deficits and preferences for
tax cuts. But how much of
this is genuinely driven by
the fact that the real source
of their mobilization is that
the president of the United
States happens to be Black?
Most of all, they identify as
“Americans” that are trying
to “take [their] country back”
by taking over the Republican
Party to ensure the election of
representatives who will vote

This reminds me
somewhat of Ross Perot who
led a populist conservative
movement in the 1992
presidential election and won
nearly 20 percent of the vote
for the American Independent
Party. If the nearly 20 million
Perot voters had joined the
39 million Bush voters,
Republicans would have
overwhelmed the 45 million
Bill Clinton voters.
Black history?
I’m not in the habit of
engaging in e-mail debates
with folks who are ill
informed, so I ignore the
note. Still, I am intrigued
enough by it to print it out
and paste it to my desktop
for a few days. When I pick
up high school history books,
I see African-American
history sprinkled through,
like seasoning, as opposed to
being placed at a base. And
I think of the tremendous
vision of Dr. Carter G.
Woodson, the second African
American to receive a
doctoral degree from Harvard
(after W.E.B. DuBois) and
the founder, in 1915, of the
Association for the Study of
African American Life and
History (ASALH). Woodson
wrote the masterpiece The
Miseducation of the Negro
and founded Negro History
Week in 1926. By 1976 the
week had expanded into
African-American History
Month. The Association,
based in Washington, D.C.,
sets a theme for Black
History Month each year
(notice that I use Black
tournament and I wouldn’t
have missed it for the world.
I had originally planned
to miss the tournament. I
explained to my son that
“Daddy had to work.” He
was disappointed, but he
understood. Early in the
morning I changed my mind
and I’m glad I did.
During the team
competition the top three
teams battled back and forth
through all six events. My
son’s team was in second
place going into the final
round and spirits were high as
the high-bar was our team’s
best event and my son was
the team’s strongest high-bar
competitor.
My son went last. He
looked good; toes pointed,
legs straight, lots of height
and then he stumbled. My
son missed an element – an
element he can do in his
sleep. He finished with a
decent score, but much lower
than normal.

give them any encouragement
to form a third party.

the heart of this mobilization,

because the playing field
for us has never been level.

accumulate wealth in the
United States because we
were the source of wealth
for others. Free Frank
McWhorter’s story is
gymnastics competition can
tell you that a step on the
landing results in a one-tenth
of a point deduction. That
afternoon the difference
between the first place team
and the third was one-tenth
of a point; literally one step.
There was a tie for first place
between our team and a
team from Redondo Beach.

The other team won the tie-
breaker and our boys took
their place on the second step
of the podium.
Afterwards I gave my son
a huge hug; he had performed
well all day. He fell into my
arms in tears. To his young
(and competitive) mind the
difference between his team
taking first and finishing in
second place was the missed
element in his routine.
My heart broke for my
son. It wasn’t the first time
and it won’t be the last. I
Well, this opens up a
can of worms that a friend
of mine, Professor Robert
Smith at San Francisco State
University and others have
addressed by researching
the relationship between
conservatism and racism.
Smith finds that, with some
caveats, there is a strong
connection.
Digging a little deeper,
I ran across an academic
study by Joseph Bafumi
at Dartmouth College, full
of statistics, showing that
those identifying themselves
ethnically as “Americans,”
like many of the Tea Partiers
do, were likely to be more
anti-Black than those who
did not. They believed
that we were spending
too much to improve the
condition of Blacks and
thus, Blacks constituted a
threat to their own interests
– which is probably why
so many Whites opposed
affirmative action. He
compelling, but it is not the
only story of a slave who
bought back his freedom.
And whenever I write or
think those words something
twists in my stomach, the
notion that someone had
to buy himself, but also in
the case of Free Frank, buy
himself and a dozen or so of
his relatives. Buy yourself,
cut a deal with the person
who owns you, as if there is
honesty in this deal cutting.
Free Frank used his free
time to work to save money
to buy himself back and
thanks to his descendent,
Dr. Juliet Walker, we know
the story. We don’t know
the story of the laundry
women who did the same
thing; don’t necessarily
know their names. But we
know that the economic
paradigm, the study of who
gets what, when, where and
why informed those women’s
decisions.
Fast forward from Free

I whispered to him over
and over again how proud I
was of him – how proud his
mother was of him. It had
been a long weekend; he was
emotionally and physically
tired. I wanted to hold him
described “Americans” in
the Presidential Election of
2008 and found they were
more largely situated in the
Southern states and more
likely not to vote for Barack
Obama.  she wouldn’t participate in

what we see of those in the
Tea Party movement, they
are more likely to anchor that
group in a White nationalists
ethnic and ideological
direction. Basically, it means
their opposition to Obama on

be trusted, that they are just
as likely to oppose him on
racial grounds, using policy
as proxy for race.
Something of this surfaced
in a CNN interview with
two women at the recent Tea
Party Convention. One was
a small business owner who
was asked if she supported
Obama’s stimulus package.
She said no and when faced
Frank to Billionaire Bob.
Bob Johnson, that is, the
brother who conceived of
BET and then sold it to
Viacom, creating dozens
of millionaires and turning
himself into a billionaire.
Fast forward from buying
oneself to selling a window to
a people. Bob Johnson is to
be admired as a consummate
entrepreneur, one who
leveraged an idea into a
profit center into a fortune.
With both Free Frank and
Billionaire Bob, we have to
ask what is left for the people
they may have leveraged, or
may not have.
Because the history of
commerce so frequently
embraces men and ignores
women it is important
to make it clear that the
history of African-American
economic empowerment has
a women’s twist, too. There
are early women to lift up
like Dr. Sadie Tanner Moselle
Alexander, the first to receive
up. I thought that if I held
him tightly enough he might
understand how deeply and
utterly in love with him I
am and that would make
everything better.
I was recently asked to
contribute some thoughts
to a book aimed at young
women aspiring to have
it all: career, family and
marriage. “What would
you tell your daughters?”
was how it was put to me.
As it happens I don’t have
any daughters; I have three
sons and what I tell them is
the same thing I would tell
them if they were girls; it
is the same thing I learned
last week. Professional
success is important; it can
do wonders for our self-
esteem to say nothing of our
bank accounts. It provides
us with status, luxury and
comfort. None of these are
bad things. However at the

not necessarily rooted in his
policies – when faced with

of radical conservatism take
America? Because of the
growing voting power of
Blacks and Hispanics, they
may not be able to re-take
political power and if they
cannot, what then? In any
case, the message to the
Democratic party is that they
must have something to vote
for that matches the energy of
Tea Party politics come the
elections of 2010 and 2012.

because the story has still
not been told. I’m grateful
and humbled by the vision
of Dr. Carter G. Woodson,
and by his commitment to
remind us of who we are,
again and again. Those who
have inherited his mantle,
the sisters and brothers of the
Association for the Study of
African American Life and
History have taken up the
baton of his vision and are
about to pass it on. In the
words of Dr. Maya Angelou,
and still we rise.

moments because you are
chasing professional success
you will have missed a great
deal. More importantly you
will have missed the point. At
the end of our journey on this
side of the darkness neither
our children nor anyone else
will care about our degrees,
awards or how much money
we saved the company.
Everyone will, however,
remember the warmth of
our hugs, the tenderness of
our kiss and the spirit of our
laughter.

Concern Over Haiti’s HIV/AIDS Crisis Grows

After decades of progress
in staving off the tide of
HIV/AIDS in Haiti, health
advocates are concerned
about regression—in the
wake of the powerful
Jan. 12 earthquake that
devastated Port-au-Prince, the
infrastructure used to combat
the disease no longer exists.
Charles King, CEO of
Housing Works, a New
York-based organization
that combats AIDS and
homelessness, traveled to
Haiti after the earthquake
and was left despondent
over what he witnessed. The
devastation to the country is
so great, he fears HIV/AIDS
patients will quickly perish.
“I was taken to one of
the larger AIDS clinics in
Port-Au-Prince which had
been pancaked,” said King.
“At that clinic, every single
staff person and every single
patient who was in the
building was killed.”
Treating victims of the
earthquake is now the No. 1
priority, which leaves patients
with other needs in the cold,
a fact King found out first
hand, much to his dismay.
“In Saint-Marc, which
is about a 90-minute drive
north of [Port-au-Prince], we
actually met with the head
of the local hospital and he
had plenty of ARVs,” he said.
“The hospital was so flooded
with trauma patients that
they couldn’t enroll any new
patients, including people
who were fleeing [Port-au-
Prince].”
The United Nations
estimates that there were
about 120,000 people living
with HIV/AIDS in Haiti at
the time of the earthquake,
with the bulk of the infections
among the 15-to-49-year-old
population, which had an
infection orate of 2.2 percent.
That rate is down drastically
from 5.5 percent within the
same age group in 1996.
King said the decline was
not fueled by outside forces,
but by the Haitian people
themselves.
“There has been a
growing society movement
within Haiti itself to combat
the epidemic,” said King.
“I attended a conference
in Jacmel, by the national
association of people living
with AIDS and HIV in
Haiti, that issued a powerful

Wizards’ Mike James Releases Memoir

The Washington Wizards
have been making headlines
for all the wrong reasons so
far this season. The team has
been publicized for weapons
charges, immaturity and
uninspiring play on the court.
While little-used backup point
guard Mike James has found
it hard to crack the rotation on
one of the worst teams in the
NBA’s Eastern Conference,
he’s been making good use of
his free time, trying his best to
single-handedly bring positive
notice to his team.
James, a nine-year veteran,
recently released his memoir
Fight For Your Dreams, a
book recounting the struggles
he overcame to make it into
the NBA and the nine team
trades he’s experienced.
The youngest of seven
children, James’ journey to
NBA hardwood began in a
crime-ridden neighborhood
in Amityville, N.Y. Years
later, he would graduate
from Duquesne University
and enjoy a short stint
playing with French and
Austrian teams. It was James’
time overseas that helped
him garner professional
recognition and a ticket to
NBA stardom when the
Miami Heat signed him as a
free agent in 2001.
“My life has been a story
from the beginning of my
success to who I am today,”
James said to the AFRO. “I’ve
always been counted out, I’ve
always been told that I can’t
do certain things and I never
listened to what other people
had to say to me or about
me. I believed a certain thing
about myself and I believed
that I could be a professional
athlete especially when
everything around me was
telling me that I can’t be this.
I continued to fight, regardless
of what everyone else had to
say.”
While James’ journey
has been a rocky one, he’s
never been afraid to share his
failures and triumphs with the
world.
In 2004, James’ career hit
a high point when he won
an NBA championship as
a valuable member of the
Detroit Pistons. He scored
20.3 points per game – a
career high- during his lone
season with the Toronto
Raptors in 2005, which
made him the only undrafted
player in NBA history to
average 20 points a game in a
season. James set a franchise
record that season as the
only Raptors player to score
30 or more points in four
consecutive games.
But even after setting an

With Doyle—a multiple MEAC honoree—sidelined,
Howard relied on Zykia Brown to take over as the primary
scorer. The junior guard from Riverdale, Md,. scored a
game-high 30 points on 60 percent shooting, along with
nine rebounds. Brown was nominated for the Heritage
Sports Radio Network National Player of the Week honor
for her stellar performance.
Lady Bison’s Cheyenne Curley-Payne added 12 points
off the bench, including a huge three-pointer that gave
Howard its first lead late in the contest. Her teammate
Tamoria Holmes added another six points, three steals,
three assists and three rebounds, while Portia Deterville
recorded eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in her
third start this year.

return to Burr Gymnasium in Washington on Feb. 12 to

Redskins’ Clinton Portis Mouths Off, Again
Washington Redskins star tailback Clinton Portis has been
in the news often for his criticism of his teammates or figures
associated with the team. According to “DC Sports Blog,” he
recently added yet another jab to his long list of critical attacks.
DC Sports Blog reported on Feb. 8 that during a recent
interview with NFL Network, Portis was asked, “What has
changed from the Clinton Portis who played in Denver to
the Clinton Portis of today?” The veteran tailback responded
by taking a verbal jab at former popular Redskins linebacker
LaVar Arrington.
“The Clinton Portis in Denver was young and fun, not a care
in the world, 20, 21 years old, I was having fun,” Portis said.
“I had Shannon Sharpe, I had Rod Smith, I had Ed McCaffrey,
I had Al Wilson, John [Mobley], I had all these guys who
showed me the ropes and brought me along and carried me and
helped me out.
“And coming to D.C., it was like all of the sudden in D.C.,
some of the players feel like it was a money situation, who’s
getting the money is a captain,” he continued. “LaVar Arrington
was the man in D.C. when I arrived, and all of the sudden
LaVar felt like it was competition, and he left D.C. He didn’t
want to be in D.C. any more. He gave back $15, 20 million to

Delegates Want to Keep Mammogram Insurance

House member is trying to preserve
insurance coverage for early breast
cancer screenings in the wake of a
November report that disputed the
usefulness of those tests.
Del. Donna Stifler, R-Harford,
presented a mammogram bill
Thursday to the House Health
and Government Committee that
would require insurers to follow the
American Cancer Society’s 2010
breast cancer guidelines.
Maryland law follows ACS’s
most up-to-date recommendations.
The bill was created in reaction
to the U.S. Preventive Services
Task Force’s November report,
which stated that women only need
mammograms every two years
starting at age 50.
The 2010 ACS guidelines state
that women in their 20s and 30s may
receive mammograms every three
years covered by their insurance,
nonprofit health service plan, or
health maintenance organization.
Women in their 40s and beyond
should receive annual mammograms
covered by insurance.

survivor, Elaine Koogler, said she
didn’t think it was likely that ACS
would change the age requirement,
with or without the passing of this
bill.
While the bill prevents increasing
the age requirement for regular
mammograms, the bill’s sponsor
isn’t opposed to changing other
breast cancer regulations if it is in
women’s best interest.
An amendment presented as part
of the bill would allow guidelines
to change if there were new
discoveries, new technology, or if
the age was lowered by ACS due to
new research, said Koogler whose
breast cancer was discovered during
a routine mammogram when she
was in her 40s.
Many committee members were
skeptical. Members questioned
panelists why it was necessary to
complicate a straightforward policy
if it was unlikely the ACS would
change the age requirement.
“Her intentions I’m sure are
to get women the care they need
(but) the law as it stands is clean, is
simple, and it works,” said Delegate
Shane Pendergrass, D-Howard.
The bill to make the state use
ACS recommendations was passed
just last year, sponsored by Del.
Joseline Pena-Melnyk, D-Prince
George’s, and 24 other delegates.
Insurance companies
weren’t perturbed by the recent
developments, though. In fact,
CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield said
the company supports the bill.
“We think the American
Cancer Society’s guidelines on
mammograms... are the appropriate
standard for insurers,” said Bill
Casey, CareFirst vice president of
government affairs. “Clinicians have
used them for years, and patients
trust them.”
CareFirst’s support doesn’t mean
the bill is going to pass, especially
since the company didn’t speak at
the hearing and Pendergrass is sure
that the bill just clutters a good
policy.
“The committee specifically
chose ... the ACS guideline for this
because we believed they would be
in the best interest of Maryland,”
said Pendergrass. “I’m sure that’s
what Delegate Stifler is trying to do
but it’s really already done.”

Walmart Grant Gives Free Tax Services

Free tax preparation and filing
services are available at 14 sites in the
Washington, D.C. metropolitan area

resources to local residents at no
cost, the program will help educate
customers and assist them in filing a
federal income tax credit.
The $4 million grant from the
Walmart Foundation will be split among
the participating organization partners
and is expected to play a role in the
return of $1 billion in total tax refunds,
tax preparation services and credits
nationwide.
Last year, the Walmart Foundation
hosted a similar initiative and helped
