Trigeneration

Site for demonstration of Trigen pilot plant at JPNATC, New Delhi

A snapshot

Demonstrate the Trigeneration technology (efficient heating + cooling) by setting

up a pilot plant at a government hospital Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre
(JPNATC, AIIMS) in New Delhi.

What is our Objective?

Increased use of Trigeneration based energy efficient cooling technologies to help

reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Who is our partner?

Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, Government of India.

Who are we working with?

The pilot project is being implemented at Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Center
(JPNATC, AIIMS).

About the Project

Trigeneration is used to simultaneously produce electricity, heat and cooling at the end users location at higher efficiency.
Waste heat recovery from power generation at site itself can be used for the heating and cooling needs increases the overall
efficiency and further reduces the transmission and distribution losses. Trigeneration reduces the peak power demand and
additional power generated can also be fed into the grid.
Trigeneration technology is largely unknown in India and only few Trigen systems have so far been installed in the country.
Promising areas for its use include hospitals, hotels, airports, departmental stores, IT and data-processing centres, industries,
etc. Estimates suggest there are several thousand sites in India where Trigeneration could be economically viable, with
outputs ranging from 200 kWel to several MWel per installed system.
A significant number of mixed audience
that consist of viz. engineer, architect,
management owner/in-charge of
hospitals, hotels and industries have
shown interest in the Trigen technology
and supply of equipments required in
setting up a plant during the awareness
campaign through meetings, seminars,
conferences, etc. (The number of
registered users on Trigen website is
increasing every day).
The project is developing a concept
to improve the legal and economic
framework to enable the promotion of
this concept with recommendation to
allocation of gas to Trigen based power
plants; developing market by creating
policies that addresses issues like feedin tariff, wheeling of electricity, gas
pricing, etc.

Key results
A market assessment study assessed the potential for Trigeneration, and to connect to partners (users, manufacturers and
suppliers of the technology) in the Indian building sector interested in this technology.
Feasibility study was conducted at JPNATC and site prepared for the pilot plant.
The pilot plant is successfully commissioned at pilot project site JPNATC.
The plant is being Operated & Maintained (O&M) for one year jointly by BEE and GIZ. The pilot plant is being
monitored for its performance - the learnings and the case study of the pilot project will be published and made available
to the interested persons, institutions, etc.
