EDITORS COMMENT
The United States first win over Jamaica in a mens 4x100m final since 2007 in the
Bahamas last weekend left a bad taste in the mouth. Three of the American quartet, Justin
Gatlin, Tyson Gay and Mike Rodgers, plus team coach Dennis Mitchell, have failed drugs
tests in the past. Not everyone enjoyed seeing anchorman Ryan Baileys cut-throat version
of Usain Bolts lightning pose either.

Men
TAYLOR CAMPBELL is now
the owner two UK under-20
records, having already broken
the age-group mark with the 6kg
implement at the Loughborough
University BUCS Trials the
previous weekend. In Bedford he
added to his record tally with a
throw of 69.39m with the heavier
senior hammer.
Campbell led a high-quality
competition as silver went to
Osian Jones, who consolidated
his position as second all-time on
the Welsh rankings with 67.35m,
while last years champion,
Michael Painter, had to settle for
bronze, despite throwing more
than three metres further than
last year with 65.23m.
The 100m event lived up to
its blue riband status, last years
England Athletics under-23 100m
and 200m champion, Kieran Daly
taking the title in 10.50 ahead of
Sam Gordan and Imran Rahman.
Im very pleased with the win
and the time, he said. 10.50 is
my fastest season-opener, so
theres more to come. It was also
raining and the track was soaked
with strong headwinds.
For the rest of the year
I am aiming to build on last
season and Ill try my best to
make the team for the World
Championships.
Omololu Abiodun took the
200m in 21.41 to add to the
indoor title he took earlier this
year, while Jack Houghton won
the 400m hurdles in 50.70.

For Judd, the championships
served as a useful run-out after
a recent training trip to America
and she hopes to build on her
performances from last year,
which saw her claim spots in both
European and Commonwealth
Games finals, by qualifying for
the European Under-23s or World
Championships.
I had different tactics
coming into it, as I wanted to
try something different, she
said. The first lap was very
slow and I dont normally run
that way. I loved representing
Loughborough, as its purely
being in Loughborough and the
set-up with George (Gandy)
that has led to me enjoying my
running again and it was nice to
see athletes from my training
group also do well.
World junior finalist Amy
Griffiths took the 1500m
in 4:20.50 from last years
champion Gemma Kersey in
4:21.74 and National cross
country champion Lily Partridge.
European under-23 cross
country champion Rhona
Auckland took the 5000m in
16:01.48 ahead of previous
winner Louise Small and Melissa
Courtney.
Adeline Goenon took an
impressive sprints double,
clocking 11.61 and a PB
24.10 over 100m and 200m
respectively, with Charlotte
Wingfield claiming silver in both.
Jessica Turner took the 400m
Championships, as well as
continue with her canoeing, in
which she recently won BUCS
team medals.
I do struggle sometimes to
fit in my training for canoeing
around my javelin training,
but being at Loughborough
University enables me to
combine both, said Meakins.
Elsewhere in the throws,
Rachel Hunter retained her
hammer title with 62.36m,
Samantha Milner won the discus
with 46.41m and Clare Fitzgerald
added outdoor victory to her
indoor title in the shot with
14.49m.

Not even Usain Bolt can make up the deficit as he struggles to catch Ryan Bailey in the 4x100m
Day one
EVEN Usain Bolt could not catch
a flying American sprint relay
quartet as United States won
the mens 4x100m in Nassau
on Saturday and also broke the
world record in the womens
distance medley.
In the big race of the opening
day of the two-day meeting, Bolt
was on the anchor leg for the
world record-holders, Jamaica,
but the US team of Mike Rodgers,
Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay and Ryan
Bailey built up too much of a lead
as they cruised home in 37.39 as
Jamaica and Bolt finished second
in 37.68.

Day two
THE United States took another
four victories on the second day
as Great Britain teams won two
sets of bronze medals.
After winning the mens
4x100m, mens 4x800m and
womens distance medley on
Saturday, American teams
returned to the Thomas A
Robinson National Stadium
on Sunday to secure wins in
the womens 4x800m, mens

4x400m and mens 4x400m.
Jamaica finished second in the
standings, helped by success in

SEREN BUNDY-DAVIES
of Nickel Ashmeade, Rasheed
Dwyer, Jason Livermore and
Warren Weir was determined not
to let that happen again in the
4x200m.
Their victory wasnt all smooth,
though, and a messy second
handover slowed things down,
but their performance went
better than that of the US team,
with the American quartet
disqualified after their baton
hit the track and Curtis Mitchell
left his lane to pick it up before
running his leg. Jamaica clocked
1:20.97 for the win ahead of
France with 1:21.49 and Germany
with 1:22.65.
Bolt had been included in the
team for the 4x200m as well as
the 4x100m but withdrew with
a tight hamstring before the
heats, something his manager
Usain Bolt:
after the

T PROMISES to be a busy
season for runners, jumpers,
throwers and race walkers
as they lace up their spikes
and shoes for the summer.
On the domestic front there
are hundreds of meetings to
compete in from Bedford to
Birmingham, Grangemouth to
Gateshead and Lee Valley to
(for a fortunate few) Londons
Olympic Stadium for the
Sainsburys Anniversary
Games in July.
Internationally, major events
take in venues as varied as
Samoa for the Commonwealth
Youth Games in September
and Colombia for the IAAF
World Youth Championships.
The main event by far in this
non-Olympic year, though,
remains the IAAF World
Championships, which is in
Beijing from August 22-30.
The action in Beijing in just
over three months time is
the highlight of the athletics
calendar. But both before
and after this event there is a
14-strong series of Diamond
League meetings.
The Diamond League begins
in Doha next week, but for fans
of British athletics all eyes
will be on the Birmingham
leg of the Diamond League
series on June 7 followed by
the Anniversary Games in
Londons Olympic Stadium
from July 24-26.

Radcliffes allergy
What London does have is Paula
Radcliffe! Her glorious farewell
was deserved, but I feel she could
have been a far better ambassador
by dealing with her allergy to
competition. Just 17 times has
the world been offered a serious
glimpse of her in the last decade,
and injuries and child-bearing
aside, thats insufficient, when
compared to other great stars
of world sport who are out there
week in, week out giving the world
pleasure and entertainment.

12-Stage demise
WITH due respect to the athletes
who ran their eye balls out on the
day, the spectacle of the mighty
National Road Relay degenerating
into a shadow of its former self is
more than many stars of its history
can stomach.
It has been a litany of
compromises, with hand to hand
change overs gone, route changes,
B teams allowed to run, finishing
50 minutes behind the first team
and a general air of socializing
apathy.
Bristols magnificent record
of 4:00:37, hand to hand, over
the classic laps, will never be
bettered, unless the classic route is
reinstated and the majority of boys
and girls revert to the hard work
ethos of those halcyon years.
The old guard will think
themselves fortunate, that they
experienced and survived the
cauldron that was the National
Road Relay, where no prisoner was
taken and no quarter given.
John Potts, Birchfield Harriers

At Iona, Clarke has a talented
team of athletes to train with,
including NCAA cross country
champion and European crosscountry silver medallist Kate
Avery. She says: It is a fantastic
set-up with supportive coaching
staff. It was great having such
a brilliant group to train with in
the cross-country season, but it
becomes more difficult for us to
link up now that our respective
race distances vary so greatly.
We train in a variety of locations
in the surrounding area, with my
favourite being The Armory.
Goals
Having enjoyed her GB debut in
Prague, Clarke says it has made
her more determined to succeed.
She explains: My main target for
the coming season is the NCAA
outdoor championships. I placed
fourth in the mile at the NCAA
indoor championships in March
and I am looking forward to seeing
what I can achieve over 1500m in
a couple of months.

Mizuno Ladies
Drylite Hana Tee
THIS good-value T-shirt
has a slim and flattering
cut and a neat neckline,
which appealed to our
testers. The colour
with contrasting stripes
was also popular as it offers
something a little different to the
solid bold or pastel shades that
are more commonplace. The
fabric is Mizunos Drylite material,
which wicks moisture, dries
quickly and has a lightweight
construction.
Cost: 20
Mizuno Ladies
Drylite Tank
A flattering neckline and some
nice attention to detail in
finishing the garment, as well
as its neatly tailored fit, meant
that this vest top was a popular
choice with our ladies. They
liked the length of the tank,
sitting around hip level and with
its slim shoulder straps they
commented that it would also
be perfect to create a layering
effect when combined with a bra
top or baselayer. The fabric has
a stretch to its construction and
a good, soft handle, making it as
fashionable as it is functional.
Cost: 23
WITH a soft-knitted
construction and semicompression type fit,
our testers instantly liked
this shirt. The fit was snug, yet
comfortable and allowed a complete
range of movement. The soft finish of
the fabric provides a great alternative to
many technical garments, with a more
relaxed finish that wicks moisture and
dries quickly, helped by different knits
throughout the shirt to help with
ventilation. The
shirt washed very
well and retained its
shape, a good sign
of a quality garment.

Purelime Ladies
Seamless ThreeQuarter Sleeve
THE three-quarter
length sleeves on this
top make it stand out
from the crowd and
make it a versatile
garment. The fabric
has a multi-textured
pattern and provides
great breathability,
moisture-wicking
qualities and its
also quick-drying.
The sleeves give it
a stylish effect and
make it great for
those in-between days when
the temperature is neither
warm nor cold.

Ronhill Ladies
Aspiration Tempo Vest
THE specifically ladies tailored
style of this vest top made it a
popular choice with our testers. In
particular, they liked the slightly
longer length. The fabric feels
pleasant against the skin and
with flat seams there is no
danger of chaffing. Its light and
quick-drying too perfect in
fact, for those warm summer
workouts.

COMPRESSION garments
have long been featured

refreshing to see a brand
of this size producing highquality garments at greatvalue prices. The quality of the
fabric in these tights is great, offering
good compression and stretch
qualities, as well as being durable and
washing well time after time. As part
of the brands heatgear range they
are designed for the warmer months
and offer superb moisture-wicking

well and the broad waistband ensures

Inverness Harriers
History
ALTHOUGH founded in 1946,
Inverness Harriers only came to
life in the late 1970s for many of
the intervening years it had been
a major player in Scotland and a
contributor to Scottish and GB
teams at all age levels.
Success is not new to Inverness
Harriers, which is undergoing a
revival after a period of stagnation.
Following a late-1970s expansion,
Jayne Barnetson, Scottish high
jump record-holder since 1985
and with a best of 1.91m, was one
of three Inverness athletes at the
1986 Commonwealth Games.
Another was former Scottish
national 110m hurdles recordholder Neil Fraser (14.11 in 1987)
while further GB internationals
include Jaynes brother, David, the
former Scottish native high jump
record-holder at 2.20m.
Background
Sessions
The clubs Tuesday and Thursday
training sessions take place
at Queens Park. With the
membership now above 400, the
facility can be packed with athletes
aged nine to 70.
However, Geddes doesnt
attribute recent expansion entirely
to the legacy of London 2012
and Glasgow 2014. He explains:
We started a rapid increase in
membership before London,
although these two Games did
us no harm at all. We like to think
that what we are doing here has
been the big attraction, especially
Inverness Harriers:
more than 400
members of all ages

Republic athlete caused one of the
upsets of the Games by completing
a prolonged Olympic double. The
37-year-old faces a trio of fellow
400m hurdles specialists: 2006
Commonwealth champion LJ van
Zyl of South Africa and Britons
Niall Flannery and Seb Rodger.
Men
100m: Two months after adding
the European indoor 60m crown
to the world indoor title he won in
2014, Gateshead Harrier Richard
Kilty faces an intriguing 100m
head to head with Kim Collins,
the 38-year-old St Kitts and Nevis
speed merchant who was the
undisputed world number one
on the boards in the 2015 indoor
season. Collins, who won the 2002
Commonwealth Games 100m title
in Manchester, was unbeaten in
nine 60m finals, topped the world
rankings with 6.47 seconds, and
was a decisive winner against Kilty
on Polish soil in Lodz and Torun.
The pair have met four times
at 100m and Collins has won all
four. The line-up also includes CJ
Ujah, the 21-year-old Londoner
who broke through the ten second
barrier last summer, and 2010
world indoor 60m silver medallist
Mike Rodgers of the USA.
