Ancestor research

LYNNE MCDONALD from Australia

is researching the history of the Dring
family.
Eight generations of the family in
Australia were descended from their
ancestor William Dring, who was
convicted of a crime in 1784 and later
transported to Botany Bay to serve
seven years. William was from Hedon
and was one of Australias First
Fleeters having arrived in Sydney
Cove with the First Fleet on 26th
January 1788.
Lynne tells the tale: There was a
Dring family in Hedon in the 17th
and 18th centuries and one William
Dring was arrested and pleaded guilty
to stealing clothes, books and brandy
on the 7th October 1784 and was
sentenced to 7 years transportation to
Botany Bay. He now has 8 generations
of descendants in Australia.
I have found out a lot about his
family in Hedon.
His Great Grandfather Francis
Dring was a shoe maker; his
Grandfather Thomas was a weaver
and later owned the New Sun Inn;
His father was a Clerk of Customs
and apparently ran the customs
office from the Inn and he was a
Tideswaiter.
I would love to know more about
the story of the theft in which he had
an accomplice Joseph Robinson. If
anyone knows anything about this I
would love to hear from them on the
email below as I am writing a book
about William but rather than use my
imagination as to why he stole what
he did I would like some true facts if
at all possible.
I am very curious as to why when
he had a job and family support
he would steal anything. All I can
come up with is that he wanted to
become a Sailor as the clothes he stole
were Sailors attire and the books
were about being a Sailor and how
to navigate and a guide to Oxford
University. Of course there were 6
bottles of brandy and 3 empty bottles
as well. We know why he stole these as
there were obviously 9 full bottles to
begin with!
It would be so much fun and very
helpful if anyone knows anything
about him and his family. I would also
love to know if there are still Drings
living in Hedon.
If anyone can help Lynne with her
research then she can be e-mailed at
lynne.ross@ihug.com.au

Experience the talents of Alison and Tony Grant, the craft

couple behind the From the Garden Shed exhibition at
the Hedon Museum. Both have their own unique skills,
requiring their own work spaces.
While Tony has always worked in his shed, Alison had
kept her equipment in the house. Whenever she turned
her attention to silk painting shed have to shut down the
kitchen, and it wasnt long before shed accumulated more
fabrics, beads and equipment than she had room to keep
them.
This was when Alison decided shed need her own heated,
organised and cosy shed. too!
Alison had always enjoyed sewing, ever since learning to
make table mats in junior school. It wasnt long before she
was making her own clothes, once even taking on the task
of transforming a wedding dress into a christening dress.
Today Alison makes beautiful and exquisitely soft scarves
from pressed wool and hand painted silk, as well as pressed

felt bowls and other curiosities.

Tony also learned his craft at school in woodwork class, and never let it go to waste, continuing to make cupboards
and cabinets. These days however his focus is upon making unique walking sticks from wood, antlers and all sorts of
interesting materials, and stunning Celtic love spoons.
Tony and Alison share an interest in the ancient Welsh tradition of the love spoons. One Valentines Day, they decided
the celebration had become too commercialised, and thought it would be more romantic to try to make personalised
gifts, which must cost absolutely nothing. Tonys answer to this was his very first love spoon, beautiful and with an
elegant Celtic design. Every year since has seen another created in honour of Valentines Day.
Lots of the unique items created by Tony and Alison for the exhibition are for sale. Come and see their work for
yourself at Hedon Museum.
Additionally, every week Tony and Alison will be demonstrating their skills to visitors.
Exhibition runs until Saturday 20th June. Hedon Museum is open every Wednesday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Its GOOD at Thorngumbald Preschool - and thats official!

Thorngumbald Preschool has once again been successfully ranked as Good in all areas in its Ofsted inspection.
The Preschool which operates at Thorngumbald Village Hall received positive comments during the inspection which took
place recently. There is a strong team spirit which is reflected in the happy, homely and relaxed environment, said the
inspector who also noted the high-quality provision for children and staff who involve children in routines that have a
positive impact on their well-being.
The inspector, reflected manager Denise Hardy, also remarked on her lovely morning observing the children engaging
in a variety of activities. Denise, who has been involved in the Preschool for over 30 years, firstly as a parent, then volunteer
and part-time worker, and now as manager, gave praise to those that work at maintaining the high standards at the Preschool:
Well done to everyone who has helped us achieve Good, she enthused, and thank you to all those parents and carers
who spoke so positively in support of the Preschool to the inspector she added.
The Thorngumbald Preschool accepts children aged 2 to 5 years from all areas and there are currently some vacancies.

A fun Race Night takes place on Friday

Each filmed race is individually boxed and
sealed so nobody knows beforehand which

Just like the real races you decide which
horses you would like to bet on (there are
eight in each race) and then go to the Tote

you wait for the official result and then
collect your winnings. The amount paid
out depends on the total amount staked
and the number of winning tickets in each
race.

THE COUNCILLOR SPOT - Keeping an eye

on issues in South West Holderness:
We are giving a monthly spot in the Herald to our three Ward Councillors who represent South West
Holderness on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council. This will be an opportunity for them to comment on
local issues and to circulate their details so local people can contact them if needing council assistance or
advice.
First up is Councillor John Dennis who has some good news about climbing up the council ladder, whilst
giving us an insight into the role and work involved in being a councillor:
By Councillor John Dennis
Having just been successfully re-elected to the East Riding of Yorkshire
Council, (and to Hedon Town Council too), I wish, firstly, to say a sincere
thank you to the army of willing volunteers who footslogged their way round
the roads and lanes of the South West Holderness Ward, delivering the many
thousands of leaflets to the electorate. Without their help, the outcome of the
election may well have been different.
Also I would wish to congratulate our opponents for the friendly (ish !!) way
they ran their campaigns too. It was a good clean fight! We will no doubt hear
from them all again next time round. Commiserations to them all, and Im
sure well still be buying each other the odd beer in the Legion!
I am now working with my fellow Conservative Ward Members, Mike Bryan who also got re-elected,
and Sue Steel, - elected for the first time - to put together a medium term plan, to enable us to become an
effective team that is fit and ready to undertake the many and varied tasks that will come our way over the
next four years.
The role of Ward Member of the Local Authority requires us to put many, many hours into our
committee work, our ward work, street surgeries etc., and, very importantly, and no-one realises this, the
many training courses we need to attend, which to be honest are so important if we are to be competent
councillors.
For my sins I have been appointed
as member of two separate
Licensing Committees at County
Hall - one for licensed premises,
sex-shops etc, the other to do with
general licensing eg taxis, kennels,
scrap yards etc - and also I will
be on the dreaded, Standards
Committee, which is one that other
members usually dont want to be
dragged in front of!
I was also surprised, and pleased
to have also been given the position
of Chair of Overview and Scrutiny
Review Panels, which is for me
quite a step-up, as it is a very highprofile job. A number of Review
Councillors Sue Steel, John Dennis and Mike Bryan
Panels are created each year to look
in depth into various aspects of the Councils responsibilities
Daunting perhaps, but, knowing we have excellent support staff to see us through the process, Im sure it
will all be alright on the night!
Finally, as if there isnt enough to do, I was indeed very honoured on 21st April to have been elected to
the position of Vice Chairman of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which means - so long as I dont
blot my copy book - perhaps becoming the Chair for 2016/17. After only four years as a Councillor, Im
very proud to have been nominated for the Vice Chairmanship by the Leader of the Council, Councillor
Stephen Parnaby, with the full support of the Conservative Group members.
Best regards to all especially those who voted for me and my colleagues. I will certainly continue to stand
up for the residents and communities of the South West Holderness Ward, on all issues that come our way.
I will be working hard to ensure we get our share of whats going round, and that our neighbour to the west
fails in its continuing attempts to take us over!

act weird. The staring, non-speaking, Jordain Faber particularly so. The other kids
at school are nervous of them, and nobody had actually heard the reclusive family
talk in their peculiar English accents, until that is Alya Drake from Hedon, England
arrives as a newcomer and begins to converse with them. Her efforts to uncover
the truth behind the mysterious family lead her to a shocking discovery, one with
unimaginable consequences...

The SPECTAC-U-LAB CLUB is aimed at inquisitive
children 5 years old and over who want to explore the world
of science!
Organiser Katy Smith says that the science club does
different experiments each week under the guidance of a
qualified science teacher and the children can take their
projects home afterwards.
Making wormeries, chocolate rocks, plastic bottle lava
lamps and exploring what periscopes can do - are just some
of the projects undertaken.
The club meets at Preston Community Hall every Tuesday
evening from 6-7pm and is open to children age 5 and
upwards. 4.50 per child, includes all equipment.

HEDONS set of historic hand bells are back home in the town after being restored by
the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London. The world-renowned foundry established in
1570 famously cast Londons Big Ben and the Liberty Bell for the United States and
so the Hedons Hand Bell Group members are naturally delighted that the bells have
now been returned in pristine condition from the acknowledged world leaders in bell
production and restoration.
Hedons hand bells are believed to have been cast in 1847, but by 2013 were in urgent
need of repair with some of the bells cracked and the leather handles deteriorating
with age. Something had to be done if the bells were ever going to be played again
and there was a real fear that the towns tradition of hand bell ringing would simply
disappear.
With the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund, a grant of 9,800 was obtained to
supplement the groups own fundraising efforts and the bells were sent away to the
Whitechapel foundry for a complete overhaul and were finally returned earlier this
year. Rumour has it that we may get the first public performance of the Hedon Hand Bells group with their new bells during HedFest in August?

South Holderness Cricket
Club. Monthly Match Previews
for the 2015 Season.
By Malc Ripley
A mouth watering local derby is in prospect
(writes Malc Ripley) when the South
Holderness first team make the short trip
to Back Lane on 30th May (most readers
will hopefully have got their Herald in time
for this) to lock horns with Humbleton
CC, where if the weather remains fair,
veteran and the very long serving Harry
Jacksons normally firm track on a bed of
good Yorkshire clay, should produce a glut
of runs. Stars of the 2014 summer for the
home side were all rounder Jordan Caley
who clattered an aggregate of 362 as well as
producing the goods with his valuable haul
of 27 wickets, whereas new Skipper Tom
Peyman also ended a fine season with 310
runs under his belt. The duo come up against
the Hedon sides top scorer ( 428 last term)
in another all rounder and one man Club
Rich Rosindale who has in excess of 25 years
with the Club. Captain rich Ingram added
363 a year ago to his tally, whilst newcomer
last year Stewart Towse took 15 wickets and
his brother Adam finished with some 340
runs. It all points to being an intriguing
match. On the same day, the An Xl entertain
Hull Ionians Coal Exporters second string
from Brantingham Park at Middle Lane,
SHCC Chairman and Wicket-keeper Gary
Chapman had 259 runs in his last campaign
aided by new skipper, this time, Andy Berry

with 27 wickets whereas former Humbleton

player Ian Harrison returned 15 wickets.
The 133 year old Club will break new
ground on Saturday 6th June with their first
ever visit to Hedon (unless anyone knows
better that is?) as Holderness act as hosts
to the promoted North Dalton CC, but the
Hedon based teams all round strength and
experience could prove to be enough in what
is expected to be a keenly fought affair.
A week later, a greater challenge probably
awaits the seniors with their trip to Norwood
Park on the back pitch where Beverley Town
CC III have ground advantage, the game
could go in favour of the home team, unless
the Hedon side are on their metal, on a
pitch that occasionally favours the bowlers.
With their first team promoted this time,
Holderness will play the Sutton-on-Hull CC
second team this season, therefore the hosts
possibly should have the measure of their
opposition in this respect, especially as they
will enjoy ground advantage, regardless, the
outcome will never be a formal conclusion
as it has been said countless times that
Cricket is a funny old game! In an eight day
turn around, the An Xl will twice meet up
with Pelican CC , the pair of teams ought to
quickly get to know one and other, together
with their strengths and weaknesses, a win
apiece beckons here. On the 4th of July,
the An Xl are without a fixture, albeit the
seniors are due to entertain Hessle CC, for
the visitors Gaz Nicholls totalled 458 runs
last summer, whilst team mate Luke Picken
turned in useful spells to finish with 29
victims, the home side will be wary of these
two opponents in this interesting battle.

Hedon based club at the age
of 24 and told he couldnt

the very next game when he
should have been playing, the
match was in jeopardy for
the lack of an official. Malc
was encouraged by his team
mates to stand in. He initially
refused saying he wanted to
play instead, but eventually
agreed. He officiated in his first
match on a temporary basis to
fill in for another poorly chap,
but that soon turned into two
weekends, then three and then
more. That initial nonchalance
has now been replaced by a
real enthusiasm for his role as

him so much pleasure and
resulted in him making so

Public Information Notice

DONT LET
STRANGERS CON
YOU OVER THE
PHONE!

PEOPLE are being urged to make their elderly relatives and neighbours aware of a national
scam where criminals are pretending to be bogus police officers in order to steal from some of
the most vulnerable people in society.
Humberside Police force has received a large number of reports of mostly elderly people
being scammed by an unknown person purporting to be a police officer.
During the call the offender said the victims had been a victim of fraud and to contact their
bank, giving them a number to ring to do so. When the victim has called the bank (using the
provided number) they have asked for the victims card details and personal data. The victim
then receives a further call from the bogus police officer suggesting they transfer their money
to a police security account, something the police would never do.
A large number of these victims have become suspicious and called the police, but
unfortunately others have lost large sums of money.
Following the incidents police are urging members of the public never to give out bank or
personal details to strangers over the phone, never hand over money or transfer funds to
unknown accounts.
Marc Dias, Humberside Police Crime Reduction Officer said: We are continuing to receive
reports of vulnerable elderly people becoming victims of this scam, which has left them distraught
after losing large sums of money. To tackle this I urge everyone to speak to their elderly family and
friends about the scam and the steps to avoid falling foul of the offenders. By doing so hopefully we
can protect people from becoming the next victims of these unscrupulous criminals.
If people are called as part of this scam they should where possible make a note of key details
of the call before calling Humberside Police on 101.

If a stranger came up to you in the street and asked for your bank details,
you wouldnt give them away would you. So dont give away those details to
strangers on the phone either!
