LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
We made it! Summer is officially here (well, after June 21) and it brings
about a whole slew of new things to look forward to. Days get longer,
healthy living routines change to involve the outdoors and schedules
often include much more playtime for adults and kids.
June also holds fun nationally-recognized days both familiar and not so
conventional:
BEST FRIENDS DAY, MONDAY, JUNE 8: Friends are important!

Sometimes as adults, friendships take a backseat but there are several

reasons they shouldnt. They provide companionship, support and an
outlet that is incomparable even (or especially!) in summer.
NATIONAL CORN ON THE COB DAY, THURSDAY, JUNE 11: Who

knew there was an entire day dedicated to one of summers most infamous foods? We didnt here at Natures Pathways, but well be marking it
on our calendars from now on. (Keep in mind that Wisconsin corn on
the cob isnt typically ready until late July, so a belated celebration may
be in order.) Yum!

FATHERS DAY, SUNDAY, JUNE 21: The third Sunday of June is

always set aside to honor our favorite fathers whether theyre biological, adoptive or a surrogate of some sort. We love our dads and love the
special day to spoil them!
TAKE YOUR DOG TO WORK DAY, FRIDAY, JUNE 26: Its no surprise

that Natures Pathways loves pets, so when we saw this nationally recognized day distinguishing one of our favorites, we had to add it to the list.
Have a great June, and let us know which of the above youll be celebrating this year via our social media pages!

The selforganizing
universe and
the rebirthing
of God
Part III

By Ken-Adi Ring

self-organizing universe is on a roll to create. This expanding universe creates everything it can to discover itself from
the very small to the very large. The universe, creation and
creator is one integrating, emerging consciousness knowing itself
through its own creation. Through billions of years and multitrillions of evolving experiments over eons it has created a self
and growing consciousness with sustaining environments such as
our earth. This evolving Earth mother, once a molten fiery rock,
has now sustained life for nearly half of its 4+ billion years; many
kingdoms, species, flora, fauna evolving ever more complexity and
sophistication seemingly in competition with itself while also learning to cooperate, began to self-reflect in greater measure. Human
beings created communities, and social and complex organizations evolved. Human self-reflection began to experience awe at the
world around and within through ever-evolving spiritual and philosophical paradigms and observation. Spiritual luminaries such as
Buddha, Christ and others had monumental impact.
Founders of Western civilization and scholars, philosophers and
scientists, such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle presented ideas and
revelations, struggling to overcome previously held truths or thought
systems from 320-480 BCE. Christs message of love, forgiveness

and inclusivity inspired many to spread this new theology at great

peril. Change is always hard for the status quo and Christianity
went through challenging centuries of persecution before it became
a state religion under Constantines Roman Empire. Women were
not allowed much say, such as Mary Magdalene, a close consort to
Jesus, and were minimized by the church. Women who following
their revelations spoke out, were often silenced or burned at the
stake; such as St. Joan of Arc and those involved in the Salem Witch
Trials. They had insight and thought outside of the box, threatening
the status quo of male dominant leadership.
Throughout history there were beacons of light, such as Hildegard of Bingen, 1098-1179 CE, and Meister Eckhart, 1260-1329,
spiritual visionary leaders. Seventeenth century scholars, Kepler
and Galileo created uproar challenging the Aristotelian earth
centric view of the then prevailing Catholic Church. Science got
much better as measuring devices and tools such as Galileos telescope were invented; a paradigm shift began with Galileo followed
by Isaac Newton on gravity, not to mention Charles Darwin.
Scientific observation and discoveries gained new perspective of
the universe. A well-fortified wall was emerging between science,
first coined in the 1830s and philosophy/religion.
Significant thinkers questioned Christian doctrine and the
way it has been defined, delivered and defended, often violently
over millennia. Nobleman crusader turned monk St Francis of
Assisis life was a protest against such abuse of power. In Middle
East Muslim nations where male dominance still reigns supreme,
women are considered property, struggling for equality. Holding on
to old male dominant power is in fear of the Divine Feminine. Nobel
Prize winner Malala of Pakistan risks her life to fight such oppression. Remnants of similar struggle still exist here. Fundamentalism
arose as a reaction to new thought or Aquarian Age movement.
Fundamentalism radically adheres to perspectives based on antiquated biblical interpretations and are resistant to change.
www.naturespathways.com

"The spiritual garden is

greening with communities
such as Unity, Unitarian,
Universalists and Science
of Mind getting a foothold
and growing ever since."
New thought in spiritual interpretation was making itself
known. The movement in the 19th century started by Charles
and Myrtle Fillmore and others was a reinterpretation of Christs
teachings, Ernest Holmes, Henry David Thoreau and Ralph
Waldo Emerson stepped further from Christianity toward
Universalism. Science achieved its heyday with the contributions
of Albert Einstein in the 19th and 20th centuries. Einsteins favorite, Madam Blavatsk, was a strong influence in metaphysical spirituality. With education more available to the masses, there was a
major trend away from old school organized Christianity.
Spiritual and philosophical seeds of change led by the Fillmores
and others proposed less rigid, less fearful, spiritual, metaphysical and open platforms, which influenced and attracted many.
The spiritual garden is greening with communities such as Unity,
Unitarian, Universalists and Science of Mind getting a foothold
and growing ever since. Early to mid-20th century great Western
spiritual thinkers such as Alan Watts, Thomas Merton, Carl Jung,
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and others contributed to this wave
of spiritual transformation. Gandhi, JFK and Martin Luther King
lost their lives attempting to do the right thing and impacted
political societies, not to mention Karl Marx.
Explorations between East and West brought Paths of Yoga,
Taoism, Zen and Hindu spiritual thought. Acceptance of eastern
spiritual philosophies was enhanced by the British musical invasion led by the Beatles and other influential seekers such as Ram
Das (Harvard Professor Dr. Richard Alpert) popularized explorations into the mind and spirit. At professional risk they explored
psychedelics, and traveled to the east in search of enlightenment.
India yogic and Tibetan meditation teachers such as Paramahansa

Yogananda, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, were invited and welcomed.

They inspired eastern spiritual programs and Ashrams to be
created in the west. Teachings from these Avatars and Gurus
added to a rebirthing of God and influenced new interpretations that were aligned with original Christ teachings. A Course
in Miracles takes an inspirational look at Christs teaching. This
book became a best seller with over 6 million sold. Thousands
of groups meet worldwide and now even on Facebook and social
media. EST and Insight and other consciousness trainings sprung
up. Societies became more of a global community in the past few
generations with the advance of technology and the Internet.
Visionary spiritual leader and scholar, John Philip Newell, in his
book, The Rebirthing of God, demands we take a look at Christianity and the worlds struggle for new spiritual beginnings: The
Rebirthing of God is a radical re-emergence of the divine from deep
within us. We do not have to create it But we can let it spring
forth and be reborn in our lives true depth of Sacredness being
tapped within us. We are God expressing itself in all the forms
of nature. These thoughts are not new; they are simply coming of
age, new thought and ancient ideas coming together. Fourteenth
century Christian mystic, Julian of Norwich clearly and dramatically stated, we are not only made by God we are made of God.
Contemporary teachers such as Deepak Chopra, MD, refers
to a quantum realm of infinite possibilities as available to us
all in this self-organizing universe and theres neuroscientist Dr.
Richard Davidsons exploration of the brain function with the
Dali Llama and Buddhist meditation. Modern day master, Author
Eckhart Tolle says, In you, as in each human being, there is a
dimension of consciousness far deeper it is your very essence,
presence, consciousness. In ancient teachings, it is the Christ
within, or your Buddha nature. A good sign of these times is the
rise to Catholic supreme authority of a gentle yet fearless Pope
Francis standing strong for change living the teachings of acceptance and forgiveness. As an advancing species, creation is reflecting upon itself merging science and spiritual self-awareness! The
rebirthing of God is imminent.

Watchful
waiting:
our
fears

By Katie Hilst, DVM

hen we are going through the last days with our pet we are
in a stage of watchful waiting. My last article addressed
some of our fears for our pets last moments. This article
will discuss the fears we have for ourselves surrounding our pets
death. The three fears most people have about their pets death are
losing control over what is happening to their pet, fears about where
the pet goes after they die (afterlife), and fear of life without their pet.
The fear of losing control over events that may happen at the
end of a pets life worries us, not our pets. This can be especially
concerning if our pet has a disease process that is prone to a
sudden, catastrophic event. This may be a seizure, massive internal bleeding or broken bone from a tumor. We cannot control all
the events in our lives, and in reality we have very little control
over much of what happens to us. We humans like to pretend we
can control things, events, stave off illness and we make plans
and schedules for the future all the time. While we cant control
what happens with our pet, we can take steps to watchfully wait
and intervene when things start to go downhill. This may involve
being very aware of small, subtle changes in our pets appetite,
engagement with us and their surroundings, and energy level.
What we need to avoid is wishful thinking taking a very small
positive sign (wag of the tail or purr) as proof our pet is fine,
when in fact the other signs point to the fact our pet isnt feeling
well. Oftentimes when a pet has had a sudden decline with very
rapid changes in their body functions (ability to breathe, for
example) pet owners will recount that their pet seemed a little
slower or more withdrawn, less hungry over the past few days.
Another fear people have is a fear of what happens after we
die, what is beyond the physical body. While many of us have a
fear of the unknown and death, our pets do not feel this fear. We
may have fears about nonexistence or punishment for not living
a good life, but our pets do not contemplate nor care about these
ideas! They are not afraid of what is beyond the physical body.
10

Natures Pathways | June 2015

Instead they are afraid of what is immediate, what is happening in

the here and now, what is happening to their body. They are very
present in their nature and not worried about the future thats
our worry! Pets fear pain, hunger, air hunger (breathlessness) and
the inability to move. When we can no longer help them with
their pain, when they no longer are able to eat, breathe, or move it
is our responsibility to relieve them of their fear. Hopefully we can
anticipate the pain, hunger and fear and let them go peacefully
before they experience those feelings.
The third big fear people have about our pets death is a fear of
our loss and life without our pet. We fear isolation and the sense
of loss we will feel when they are gone. We need to confront that
fear, realize it, and not let it interfere with our pets last moments.
Do not be afraid of grief, it is a healthy normal response to losing a
loved one. As you go through the last months, weeks and days of a
terminal pets life, you are probably already experiencing grief at the
thought of your impending loss: anticipatory grief. Many people
feel relief after their pet passes, relief that they are not suffering,
relief that their passing was peaceful, and relief that the watchful
waiting period is over. The grief and a period of mourning are a
time to reflect about the special bond of love we had with our pet.
We have a pet in our lives for ourselves, and when we release
that pet from suffering we do that not for ourselves, but unselfishly for them. The love we share with our furry friends is real, and
endures beyond our physical lives.

Psychic
knowing
A source of wisdom
for your soul

By Cecilia Farran

ur species has an urge to know, and thus we have a

myriad of sciences, philosophies and religions to explain
reality and life on the physical and spiritual realms. The
sciences, for instance, search for measurable data. From the visual
observation of simple information, i.e. the spring bird count, to
the more complex measuring of stars and galaxies through telescopes and mathematical data in the end science is about data.
But there are other ways of knowing that are not measurable
although the human mind continually seeks measurement. Consider
the Hadron Collider under the Swiss Mountains, searching for the
God-particle, the essence of creation. Or consider psychic readings,
the efficacy of which is not so much measured as felt.
Anyone who has been helped by a psychic will tell you that they
have vibrated with the truth of the information (some get the chilly
all-overs when a psychic speaks a hidden truth). Some find that
information from a psychic intuitive plays out at some point in their
lives or perhaps gives them a different direction that they had not
considered. There is no doubt that, measurable or not, the information channeled from an unseen source carries an efficacy.
Psychics each have their own way of bringing in the information from the world of the unseen. Among them are astrology,
tarot, Akashic records, palm readings, clairvoyance, numerology,
runes and shamanism. They include direct communication with
human spirits, nature devas, star beings and angels.
The old vision of a turbaned gypsy bending close to a crystal
ball and saying, You will meet a tall dark handsome stranger is
a caricature of the past. Readings today center around the energies of ones soul path, ones life purpose. When going to a reader
you of course will have questions, which most generally these
days revolve around more philosophical and spiritual Why am I
here? and How can I best follow my true path?

How to best experience a psychic reading

1. Trust that information and wisdom can come through unseen

and energetic pathways.

2. Trust that a good psychic will give information to move you

www.naturespathways.com

forward in your highest good. If a psychic tells you bad things

will happen, or of how they can stop them for a fee, run, do
not walk, away.
3. Come to a reading with a humble and open heart willing to
welcome whatever might come.
4. Always trust your own inner knowing. If it doesnt feel right,
quite possibly it is not.
5. Ask yourself how it feels. Take the information given and play
it off your own intuition: Is there an ecstatic gripping in your
heart, a soaring in your soul?
6. Be proactive. A reading is not something done to you, but
with you.
7. Experience several readers and modalities to find what
resonates best with you.
8. Keep yourself as your own highest source. Never give your
power away to a psychic.
Psychics are there to help, but you are the ultimate wisdom. A
good reader will not want you to give your power to them.
A psychic fair, such as the Midsummer Magic Psychic Faire sponsored by 43/90 North Earth in the Albany Courtyard in Spring
Green on June 20 is a wonderful way to experience one or more
readers in a kind and supportive environment. Several intuitive
paths give the opportunity to have one or more readings from
different perspectives. For information or to reserve a reading, see
this issues Community Calendar. While walk-ins are welcome,
advance reservation assures a slot.
Cecilia Farran owns 43/90 North Earth Gifts, in Spring Green, a
full service source for new thought and spiritual support. The name
marks the global location where visitors and seekers are always
welcome and special events aim to bring out the wisdom and fun
in the spiritual path. North Earth is located at 136 South Albany
Street in the Albany Shops Courtyard, Spring Green, across from the General
Store & Cafe. For more information about 43/90 North Earth, or their upcoming psychic fair (see this issues calendar section), visit www.northearth.com, call

Be well, travel
Wisconsin!

By Emily Niesen

armer temperatures, cheaper gas prices, and getting

out of town are all great reasons to experience Wisconsins wonderful destinations right now. Maybe this
summer you will plan a family road trip or a babymoon. Perhaps
you and your significant other agreed that instead of birthday and
anniversary gifts, you would splurge on a weekend traveling. So
why not do it locally? Wisconsin also has great venues for just the
girls or just the guys to hit the reset button and have a great time!
Here are some destinations that I hope you find off the beaten
tourist track that offer the typical Wisconsinite an opportunity to
find some balance this summer.

La Crosse www.explorelacrosse.com

A big city with a small town feel. The city is easily accessible and
navigable by major highways or quiet backroads. La Crosse offers
a variety of ways to vacation well. Their historic downtown is
one of the best with fabulous restaurants, boutiques and shops
for adventurers. From downtown, the sidewalks meet right up
to paths connecting hiking trails and the Mississippi River. You
might want to reserve a spot on a riverboat cruise for dinner,
drinks and a scenic tour of the mighty Mississippi. On a clear day,
the top of Granddads Bluff offers the view of not only the beauty
of Wisconsin, but Minnesota and Iowa too! Visit La Crosse and
you will see why it is a city perfect for both the laid back vacationer and the active adventurer.

Age trail is abundant in South Central Wisconsin. You can spend

a long weekend hiking segments of the trail along Devils Lake
State Park and enjoy the beach and other park activities. Other
favorite Ice Age trail segments are Indian Lake Park and Gibraltar Rock. These trailheads nestle among quaint little towns like
Lodi, Berry and Merrimac, which all offer the big city traveler an
opportunity to slow down. National Trails Day is Saturday June,
6. Check out the Ice Age Trail website for local fun trail events as
well as trail maps so you dont get lost!

Sauk Prairie and Baraboo

Venture off the trail for an afternoon of prime bald eagle watching
along the Wisconsin River in Sauk Prairie. This town also offers great
stops like Wollershiem Winery and Culvers one and only Blue Spoon
caf, a must visit! After some walking, scenery and dining, pamper
yourself at one of the local spas. Keep heading north on Highway 12
and you will pass through historic Baraboo with its precious downtown lined with great antique shops. If you still have time and are
searching for water activities among other tourist attractions, you are
a hop, skip and a jump away from the famous Wisconsin Dells.
I wouldnt consider myself a very experienced traveler, but I have
traveled enough in and out of the country to know that Wisconsin
has a lot to offer, and I am very content traveling close to home.
Keep your eyes peeled for local mom and pop shops, farmers
markets, food stands and, of course, every town has their summer
carnival with live music and local talent expos.
Whether youre a foodie, an adventure seeker, sight seer or
spa person, you will never run out of places to visit this summer,
which we all know is the ideal travel season here!

Good health
is not a
luxury

By Tracy Jobe, LMT, NCBTMB

e spend money on maintaining our homes, our cars,

our electronics, etc. We do this to keep these items
performing at their peak, or they dont perform at all.
We rely on these items to provide shelter, get us from point A to
point B, keep us connected, entertained and even perform work
tasks. When something goes wrong with these items, we stop
what we are doing and get them fixed ASAP, and sometimes at
any cost, because it is our livelihood. So do you do the same thing
for your body?
Your magnificent, complicated, refined body a system that
when properly maintained, performs its best for years without
being told to. I am in awe every time I think of all the amazing
things the human body does day in and day out. According to
Wikipedia, the world average life span for humans is 71 years.
Thats a lot of years! No one can dispute that as we age, things in
our bodies just dont work as well, or as efficiently as they did in
our younger years. I am constantly telling my clients that we cant
dispute the fact that as we age it takes our bodies longer to recover
from daily activities, sports, hobbies, work, etc. So if we spend
money on a regular basis to maintain material things so they last
longer and work better, why do so many of us have a hard time
investing time and money into our own health and wellness?
Most of us have health and dental insurance that will provide
routine physicals and checkups. They even cover us when our
bodies arent performing at their best. However, there are limitations to traditional Western medicine. Western medicine
takes more of a reactive approach versus being proactive about
keeping our bodies in tiptop shape. Western medicine typically
treats symptoms, putting a Band-Aid on the problem. I am not
proposing all or nothing, to do one treatment or therapy only.
Life is about balance, and this also applies to how we maintain our bodies. Even Western medicine is more effective when
combined with alternative therapies. While it is important to get
those routine things done at the doctors office, it is also just as
www.naturespathways.com

important to get a massage, energy work, acupuncture, or whatever alternative therapy you choose to do to complete the circle of
health and wellness. It has to become a lifestyle change.
Now I know this seems daunting, and in our fast-paced society,
almost impossible. I constantly tell clients that it starts with being
mindful, OK, I need to start taking better care of my body. Being
mindful of it is the first step, and then it can be simple as taking
10 minutes a day to meditate, be grateful, walk the neighborhood,
stretch, do yoga the possibilities are endless. As these things
are done daily, they become habits, and then you and your body
crave them, need them, and you find yourself making more time
for them, thus more time for you. You will begin searching for
other ways you can be good to yourself and your body. You might
decide to try some healthier ways to relieve your aches and pains
instead of taking the daily pain reliever. There are so many therapies out there to treat physical pain, but more importantly not just
treating the pain, but when done on a consistent basis, can actually prevent the acute situations in life. There are so many alternative therapies out there to help the physical body, but also the
mental and spiritual body as well.
Just like maintaining your car, which you typically do every 3
months or 3,000 miles, alternative therapies work best for you
when done consistently. Just as mentioned before, do it gradually,
so you are more likely to stick with it. Once you start, you will
soon find your body and mind will be craving it, and you wont
want to miss your next appointment. An ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure, so why not treat the only body you have
the best that you can now before its too late.

Adventures in
self-awareness
The balancing act of
parenting, Part 1

By Nikki Cohen Wichner, MS, LMFT

Parenting is a mirror in which we get to see the best of ourselves, and

the worst the richest moments of living, and the most frightening.

Jon and Myla Kabat Zinn

Everyday blessings: the inner work

of mindful parenting

Summer is just about to begin and you get to choose what type of
memories your children will store in their minds and bodies long
after theyve become adults. This is the first in a series of articles
intended to help parents find a healthy balance this summer.
Ponder for a moment what the summers of your childhood
brought to your life. For many, summer was a time overflowing
with richly rewarding activities to develop social and emotional
skills balanced with quiet solitude and spiritual growth. For others,
summer was a time void of all structure, steeped in day upon day of
boredom that likely led to feelings of isolation and quite possibly a
lifetime of unhealthy habits. Regardless of which of the prior groups
we fit into, summer was also often a time when the added stress our

14

Natures Pathways | June 2015

parents experienced by having us home all day led to toxic memories we would prefer to delete from our brains.
The key difference between those experiences did not hinge
upon socioeconomic status and our parents ability to pay for
activities and vacation excursions healthy and creative parenting
rises above the limits of socioeconomic realities, just as unhealthy
parenting leaves its mark on children from all walks of life. The
key difference came from within our parents ability to be creative
and healthy individuals who made mindful plans for summer
vacation while allowing for time to focus on their own needs.
Many parents have no idea of how their own parents made the
choices they did, nor the feelings they have about such decisions.
Now might be a good time to strike up a conversation so your
parents can share the wisdom gained by raising you.

Conversation starters

How did you take care of yourself when we were home so

much during school breaks? What would you have done

more often that could have helped you remain healthier?
What was your secret for budgeting money for special activities like ____?
Our elders had to master a different skill set than us and may
give us courage to disconnect the wires from our childrens
summer schedules, at least for a while each day. Seek advice
on how they imagine their grandchildren enjoying unwired
time.
Perhaps most importantly, ask open-ended questions that
will allow them to share their hopes and dreams for spending
quality time with grandchildren this summer if you feel this
is in your childs best interest.
This type of conversation is a part of an important life development stage that often is missed in society where elders are

"Speaking on a parent to
parent level of conversation
will allow you to expand
your awareness of your
own parents strengths as
well as their awareness (or
lack) of shortcomings."
increasingly disconnected from our daily lives. Such conversations used to take place very naturally when we spent more than
holidays with our elders.
Speaking on a parent to parent level of conversation will allow
you to expand your awareness of your own parents strengths as
well as their awareness (or lack) of shortcomings. This may help
you see healthy and unhealthy patterns in your own parenting.
However, ending this article without acknowledging the challenges present in a shared/co-parenting relationship would be
negligent of me. According to WI Department of Human Services
Report on Marriage and Divorce, co-parenting is a reality for
easily 75,000+ people in the state of Wisconsin, which means that
nearly a quarter million youth have their futures determined by
parents who must meet the challenges of co-parenting.
If you are single parent who faces the challenge of co-parenting
with someone else, whether that be an ex or someone who is willing to
support you in your parenting, consider opening a conversation about
childhood memories and your shared hopes for what this summer
can mean for the children whose futures are held in your hands.
There are many excellent articles available to support your effort to
develop a healthier co-parenting relationship in honor of your children. I have eternal respect and admiration for each parent who gets
themselves to the table to work on their co-parenting relationship.
My husband and I feel honored to have been identified by some of
these single parents as their co-parenting partners who supported
them through the trials and tribulations of raising their children,
many who have been challenged by trauma and/or developmental

disabilities, many who have simply been normal kids affected deeply
by the pain of loss of the family they thought they would always live in.
The topic of co-parenting through summer deserves more
attention so Julys article will explore how to navigate the journey
of co-parenting. Until then, choose each moment to breathe
deeply this summer and allow, allow, allow.

Using
frequencies
to heal
holistically

By Sonya Sullins

ou might be like me in that youve taken prescription

medications only to find the side effects as bad as (or even
worse than) the original problem! Unfortunately, many
prescription drugs have adverse side effects that are too dreadful
to even think about. Natural, alternative and safer treatments and
therapies are becoming more and more appealing.
When traditional medicines and procedures have failed you, or
if youre looking for an alternative form of treatment to prevent or
fight disease, a revolutionary technology is slowly gaining ground
that might just be the very answer youre looking for.
This technology is based on the premise that disease and injury
have specific frequencies that can be altered through the use of
electronic frequencies. When the specific frequencies of pathogens or diseases are eliminated, the body restores its natural
equilibrium, which is a natural state of well-being thats free of
ailments.

Using frequencies to heal holistically:

An overview

The use of electronic charges or frequencies actually go back to

ancient times. The Romans were known to use the frequencies of
eels to treat people with headaches and other forms of physical pain.
Two of the most commonly known researchers and inventors
of frequency therapy and frequency generators are Royal Rife
and Dr. Hulda Clark. Though these two have long passed, their
technologies are still being used today, created by believers and
supporters of their revolutionary technologies.
Royal Rifes Beam Ray was invented in the 1930s and touted
by scientists as the very technology that could cure all disease.
According to Rife, and others, every disease has a frequency that
can be measured by the unit hertz. Rife believed that certain
frequencies can also prevent the development of disease.
16

Natures Pathways | June 2015

Today, if you compare Rifes device to common radiation

therapies, Rifes device has a safer and more effective result as it
only affects microorganisms that have a negative response to the
frequencies, and all other cells are left unharmed.
Dr. Hulda Clark is famous for her Frequency Generator Zapper.
Using the very same theory that certain pathogens and parasites
emit specific frequencies, Clark developed her device which had
the ability to zap the frequencies of viruses, bacteria and parasites.

Bio electrotherapy: FDA-approved and used for

pain management

Electrotherapy is a form of alternative treatment that is being used

to manage pain. It uses the same theory of using electrical energy
as a medical treatment. In fact, the American Physical Therapy
Association acknowledges its use for a number of medical treatments, such as for pain management, tissue repair, joint mobility,
edema and for neuromuscular dysfunction.
The Wellness Pro Electrotherapy Instrument is an FDAapproved, laboratory tested and certified device that uses the
latest in frequency science and cutting-edge features for effective
pain management.
It is one of the leading devices in the industry since its renowned
for having the most flexibility of use and for producing the largest
frequency range.

How using frequencies work for holistic healing

Using the theory used by Rife and Clark, the device bases its technology on the scientific knowledge that cells in the body release
www.naturespathways.com

an electrical charge when they send messages to other cells.

However, when your body encounters damage or trauma
through injury or exposure to pathogens and bacteria, they lose
their natural ability to repair and replace themselves. This leads
to pain and disease, and thus you need to take medicines or go
through invasive medical procedures to correct your cells natural
mechanisms.
When this happens, chemical drugs and procedures actually
damage other cells in the process, giving your body even more
damaged cells that need to be repaired.
What the Wellness Pro frequency generator acts as a catalyst to
bring back the function of damaged cells. The frequencies increase
blood flow in the process and restore the damaged cells natural
ability and overall wellness. And it does all this without hurting
other cells in the body because it targets only those specific cells.
In short, using frequencies to heal and treat your body will
bring it to a state of homeostasis, which is the bodys natural state
of well-being.

Gemini So
much to learn!
Dates: May 21 June 20
Ruled by: Mercury
Element: Air

By Barry Kerr

Full Moon, June 2, 2015 11:19 a.m

Though true for everyone, the following information will feelmore relevant to you if your sun, North node, Chiron and/or
a group of other planets are in Gemini on your birth chart.

What is Geminis intention?

After Taurus grounds our spirit into the physical world, and we
build security, we are ready to look around, awaken our curious
mind, and connect to our surroundings, including people. OMG,
Gemini! Where do I start?
Our inner Mercury, ruling Gemini, is our rational mind,
designed to process information through our five senses and
make sense of our environment. Its instinctual function is to
discern danger from opportunity. From this limited view, the
world appears to be fractured everything and everyone separate from everything else. Our lower human mind forgets that
ultimately, all is divine oneness. So, within the illusion, it learns

all it can, about whatever it can, categorizing data, good or bad, in

order to better survive.
This is basic to Gemini, however Geminis spiritual intention
is to become aware of the countless ways that spirit manifests
through dualities, thoughts, forms and relationships. In Gemini,
we learn how to learn, think and communicate. If conscious, we
learn tact, logic and objective listening. We seek facts and alternative perspectives, asking questions to learn how others think.
Fully conscious, we strengthen our ability to make objective
decisions and actions, communicate internal dichotomies, and
use non-threatening approaches to express our ideas. When our
minds can also integrate emotional awareness, we keep a positive outlook on life and people, delighted and fascinated with the
diversity we see. This is prep for our own creativity.
Our unconscious Gemini will tend toward indecisiveness,
waiting for more and more information and trusting others

perceptions before our own. We tend to gossip, guess what

others are thinking or say what others want to hear as misguided
attempts to establish connection. Logic overrides our deeper,
intuitive truths and we get stuck in our heads.

What needs healing and growth?

Our Gemini ego, if wounded in youth, can feel unable to communicate well with others, inept with words, or even unintelligent.
There is a social uneasiness, not fitting in, or not perceiving the
connections between things and people that others seem to see.
We may feel uneducated, slow or stupid compared to others.
This can lead us to either worship and/or belittle those who we
see as better in this way. We may hide our real talents in order
to not be compared to others, and through self-deprecation,
form alliances with others we perceive as safe. We may withdraw
socially, living with our own internal dialogue.

What can I do this month?

To heal and evolve your Gemini self, pay attention to your stream
of thoughts. Where is your attention at any moment? Now where?
And now? And so on. Are there patterns to this? This may be a
clue to your unique form of intelligence and expression, different
than others. Do you value your intuitive truth? Or do you cancel it
out with logic? Notice who you admire or denigrate for their intellect or communicative expression. Do they mirror those aspects
of yourself you have yet to acknowledge and embrace?
Things to do: Follow your curiosities. Read, write and ask questions. Sign up for that class. Or teach it! Grow your communication skills. Communicate a deeply guarded emotion or intuitive truth to someone who will listen. See how well you listen to
someone else do the same.

Additional support (current planetary transits)

As the moon is full on June 2, you may feel the contrast between
your emotionally satisfying deep, intuitive beliefs (Moon Sagittarius) and your rational, concrete thinking brain (Sun and
Mercury in Gemini). The dissonance may jar your peace of mind
in relationships, challenging you to remain compassionate toward
those who reflect your inner tension (Neptune in Pisces, squaring Moon/Sun). With Mars in the mix (conjoining Sun/Mercury),
beware of heartless aggression toward others or by others. Drop
into your heart before reacting. Agreement does not equate with
love.
As the new moon approaches on June 16, Neptune and Saturn
(squaring and opposing Mercury) will continue to bring selfawareness to how well you take responsibility for and include
compassion in your thoughts and communications. Its a balance.
Too much sympathy can cloud pragmatism. Too much judgment
can close the heart. Let this new moon be an opportunity to aim
higher.

To cleanse or
not
to cleanse

By Kirsty Blattner

o cleanse or not to cleanse? This is a question I am asked a lot

when Im running workshops. With summer fast approaching and people wanting to look and feel their best, this is what
I tell them: a cleanse can make you feel lighter, happier, healthier, clear
headed with loss of brain fog, energized and amazing. However, they
can also make you feel headachy, sick, and lethargic, and have the
potential to have you come down with a bad case of disaster pants!
So the moral of the story is, choose your cleanse carefully!

Why a cleanse does not work for some people

Too restrictive (time and order or types of food)

Unappealing bland food
Expensive products
Too calorie restrictive
Takes too long to prepare the meals
Complicated
Feeling lethargic and sick when on them

Wheatgrass: How
miraculous
is it?

By Luz Delia Gerber

The power of wheatgrass is extraordinary. It never ceases to amaze me. Yes, its
begging for formal proof. But the results are
self-evident. Not everything needs a double
blind trial. Its safe. Its a food. If youve got
someone with a burn and in pain and you
can stop the pain, seal off wound, prevent
infection, and heal it without scarring overnight.... why would you need a double blind
study to use it? Dr. C.L. Reynolds, M.B.

skilled, self-taught health practitioner who
rescued and nurtured Ann to health. As
the rest of the family headed to America,
Ann thrived for her first five years under
her grandmothers care in Europe. As a
matter of survival, Anns grandmother
managed to salvage grass and seed, which
sustained and nourished Ann as war and
destruction raged around her.
Following a tragic accident in her late
teens, gangrene set into Anns crushed legs
and, amputation was the suggested solution. Ann refused to accept the idea and
instead enlisted her uncle to bring herbs,
flowers and grasses to aid her in nursing
her way back to health. She saved her legs
and regained her healing, and later trained
for and ran the Boston Marathon!
At the age of 50, Anns health took a
major downturn. She began to lose her
www.naturespathways.com

hair and teeth, and had developed colon

issues. Her childlike wonder and trust in
nature and God led her to reading about a
magical grass consumed by an ailing King
Nebuchadnezzar. When she searched for
this magical grass, you guessed it, she found
wheatgrass! And thus the foundation of her
work began and is still effectively used as a
basic element of healing at the Hippocrates
Health Institute, which she founded and,
which has aided thousands upon thousands
of people seeking the well-being and rejuvenation that Ann found.
Wheatgrass is such an integral part of
my daily routine; perhaps because of Ann
sharing her stories with me or perhaps
because of my own personal transformation and healing. Wheatgrass continues to
play an essential part in my daily life!

What is it about wheatgrass that

is so essential?

It is filled with abundant chlorophyll! It

cleanses the body of toxins while providing a proper balance of nutrients as a whole
food. Wheatgrass is a good source of potassium, a very good source of dietary fiber,
vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E (alpha
tocopherol), vitamin K, thiamin, riboflavin,
niacin, vitamin B6, pantothenic acid, iron
zinc, copper, manganese and selenium.

Bonus benefits

Wheatgrass can be grown in your own

home all year long! And the good news
for those who avoid gluten is that wheatgrass juice is extracted from wheatgrass
sprouts, i.e. before the wheat seed begins
to form so it is naturally gluten-free!
So, in my humble opinion, wheatgrass IS
a miracle. You gain so much benefit from
something so simple, so easy to obtain, so
easy to implement. Is that not miraculous?
If youve never had wheatgrass before, give it
a try now! Yes, most people say it tastes like
grass (well, it is grass), but I think it tastes like
summer and my body craves it! Whatever
your journey, wherever your journey takes
you, I wish you good health and a joyous life
(with a little wheatgrass on the side)!

Underdog
Pet Rescue of
Wisconsin

oull notice there is something special going on when you

walk into Underdog Pet Rescue of Wisconsins outreach
office at 231 S. Fair Oaks Avenue on the east side of
Madison. There are young volunteers welcoming in passersby,
working with animals and cleaning. Youll find foster parents
visiting potential adopters with their adoptable foster pets. At
times youll find medical care being received by pets thanks to
volunteer vet techs and Dr. Carrie Donahue, whose practice
(Full Circle Holistic Veterinary) shares the space with the rescue.
Volunteer photographers come in often to snap shots of dogs and
cats to enhance their online adoption profiles.
Underdog Pet Rescue is an all-breed companion animal rescue
based out of Dane County. Underdogs mission is to find permanent homes for animals in need, and to enrich lives by strengthening the connection between animals and people through community outreach.
We really work hard to give our adopters a great experience
with rescuing their future furry family members. We have volunteers who help make matches, and then other volunteers who
help provide post-adoption support by checking in and providing
professional training help when needed, says Executive Director
Lauren Wojtasiak. Our foster homes want to help find the best
permanent homes for their foster dogs or cats, so we believe in
sharing all weve learned about the pets in our homes to match
them with appropriate families.
There is a public perception that shelter and rescue animals are
damaged goods; however, Underdog, like many fantastic local
animal welfare groups, shows the community that there are so
many wonderful animals who became homeless by no fault of
their own. The majority of the animals we take in are friendly
pets who simply need us to find them families.
The majority of animals Underdog serve come from overflowing shelters in Wisconsin. Some come from out of state. Dogs and
cats are spayed or neutered, made up to date on vaccines, microchipped and given basic blood tests. Additional care, like dental
cleanings, mass removals and other services are also provided by

the rescue as needed.

We really pride ourselves in being part of the community.
Neighborhood businesses go out of their way to help our cause.
Whether its bad dog frida putting out a bucket for customers
to donate bags of food for our animals, or One Barrel Brewing
Company welcoming us in for a fundraiser, we feel very much
supported, says Wojtasiak. We hope to continue showing
Madison that rescued pets are amazing, and it really restores your
faith in humanity when you see how many people want to help
those that cannot help themselves.
Underdog is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Underdogs outreach hours are
Sundays noon to 4 p.m. and Thursdays 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at their 231 S. Fair Oaks
Avenue location in Madison. For more information, visit www.underdogpetrescue.org

Building relationships
one smile at a time
listens to your needs

isiting the dentist has an unfair but long-standing reputation

of being nerve wracking and frankly, unpleasant. Maybe its
because of a past bad experience or perhaps due to the sometimes scary representation its given in movies and on television.
Dr. James W. Hill recognizes that a lot of people fear him, but he
doesnt take it personally. Instead, the owner of Excellence in Dentistry
does what anyone would do to ease someones anxiety and help them
have a positive experience: he listens.
We pride ourselves on being an educational facility as much as
a treatment facility and we spend a lot of time minimizing anxiety
and fear, Dr. Hill says. Its a lot more fun to be a dentist when youre
understood and appreciated.

A relationship-based environment
Theres no lack of amenities to be valued at Excellence in Dentistry,
beginning with the offices close-knit group of team members who
create an atmosphere that is anything but ordinary when it comes to the

dental field. Along with Dr. Hill, Dr. Amy Sergeant and Dr. Edwin Batchelor hold the same supportive and understanding philosophy when it
comes to treating patients.
(I) try to treat others the way I want to be treated, Dr. Batchelor
says. Listened to, educated, rather than as a problem to be dealt with.
We have a more relaxed, fun environment here, Dr. Hill adds. We
dont take ourselves too seriously were definitely a relationship-based
practice.
You dont have to look far to see that Excellence in Dentistry is different. The businesss Facebook page boasts jokes about dental stereotypes, wisdom and facts about our teeth and mouths, glowing patient
testimonials and most of all, photos of an abundance of smiles.
Dr. Hill says its easy to see and feel that people want to be there
team members included. The environment is positive, full of open
communication and above all else, fun. So much so that four of the
18 team members have been with Excellence in Dentistry for over 30
years. He also admits that from an average office standpoint they would
probably be considered overstaffed, but they are that way on purpose.
www.naturespathways.com

We want to make sure communication is very effective and we

have people who enjoy working here, Dr. Hill says. They take our
corporate culture to heart.
The team continuously works on the offices unique relationship-based
perspective going so far as to invite consultants from psychologists and
other social science experts to help understand how to speak with
patients to create a great atmosphere for all involved.
They recognize that everyone is an individual and that means there
are different likes, needs and wants between them and are sensitive to
the differences among patients.
I got involved (in dentistry) because I didnt like the way I felt when
I visited the dentist as a child, Dr. Batchelor admits. I didnt like not
being treated as a person. I thought I could do a better job.

Co-developing a customized
treatment plan

When you visit Excellence in Dentistry, developing a treatment plan isnt

strictly dictated by Drs. Hill, Sergeant and Batchelor. Patients are the
most important piece of the puzzle, and a major part of the decisionmaking process what is decided and when.
Some people are great communicators, and some people make decisions very quickly, Dr. Hill says. Others need to think about things while
others need to feel it, touch it and hold it before they make a decision.
If a patient is very decisive, co-developing a treatment plan is
discussed immediately. If more time is needed to make a decision
and the person wants to do research, think about and perhaps discuss
options with someone close to them, thats understood too. Each doctor
realizes the commitment dental work can entail, and respects patients
unique feelings about the process.
Its also important for Excellence in Dentistry to have open communication when it comes to the financial side that can be involved in
dental work.
We have treatment planning coordinators to talk about finances
with the patients, Dr. Hill explains. We want to make sure that everybody understands what their financial commitment will be before they
leave the office. The last thing I want to do is solve a dental problem
and create a financial problem.
Thats only the beginning of an excellent experience at Excellence in
Dentistry. Not only will you be valued as a person, youll also be exposed
to the newest technology and most up-to-date equipment as a patient.

New technology to promote

oral and overall health

The ever-changing medical industry can be hard to keep up with, but

with continuing education like attending educational workshops, scientific lectures having to do with the current state of periodontal disease,
www.naturespathways.com

learning about trends in dental health and diabetes, or techniques on

how to use new equipment, Drs. Hill, Sergeant and Batchelor stay
current on the safest and most convenient procedures for their patients.
Because there is an increasing amount of information being shared
about the connection between gum disease and other health problems,
(such as heart disease, cancer, and other health problems) more people
than ever are talking to their dentist about gum disease.
We almost have a zero tolerance for bleeding gums, Dr. Hill says.
We really want to make sure people are educated as to how to take
care of things, and why...
Excellence in Dentistry utilizes the PerioLase tool for the Food and
Drug Administration-approved LANAP protocol, which is a proven technique for the treatment of gum disease.
They also use a 3D scanner and digital radiography in place of
the old X-rays to ensure lessened exposure to radiation. In addition,
CEREC, a cad-cam, is a crown enabling manufacturing process,
which makes crowns the same day. Rather than coming back to have
a laboratory-fabricated crown put in, it becomes one convenient step.
They take an engaged role and look at systemic issues and apply
that to dentistry, ensuring both oral and overall health.
Its not surprising patients who visit Excellence in Dentistry do so
largely because of word-of-mouth referrals, especially when the dentists
are so highly revered even by the youngest of fans.
I was out in public, and a young patient came running to me yelling,
Thats my dentist! Dr. Batchelor remembers. It made me proud to
serve her family and establish such a personal relationship.

Cranberry
Vaccinium macrocarpon
...........................................................

ranberries are the fruit of a native plant of North America.

These red berries are used in foods and in herbal products. Historically, cranberry fruits and leaves were used
for a variety of problems, such as wounds, urinary disorders,
diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments and liver problems. More
recently, cranberry has been used as a folk or traditional remedy
for urinary tract infections or Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)
infections that can lead to stomach ulcers, or to prevent dental
plaque. Cranberry has also been reported to have antioxidant and
anticancer activity.
The berries are used to produce beverages and many other food
products, as well as dietary supplements in the form of extracts,
capsules or tablets.

What the science says

There is some evidence that cranberry can help to prevent urinary

tract infections; however, the evidence is not definitive, and more
research is needed. Cranberry has not been shown to be effective
as a treatment for an existing urinary tract infection.
Research shows that components found in cranberry may
prevent bacteria, such as E. coli, from clinging to the cells along
the walls of the urinary tract and causing infection. There is also
preliminary evidence that cranberry may reduce the ability of H.
pylori bacteria to live in the stomach and cause ulcers.
Findings from a few laboratory studies suggest that cranberry
may have antioxidant properties and may also be able to reduce
dental plaque (a cause of gum disease).
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health
30

Natures Pathways | June 2015

(NCCIH) is funding studies of cranberry, primarily to better

understand its effects on urinary tract infection. The Office of
Dietary Supplements and other National Institutes of Health
agencies are also supporting cranberry research; for example,
the National Institute on Aging is funding a laboratory study of
potential anti-aging effects.

Side effects and cautions

Drinking cranberry juice products appears to be safe, although

excessive amounts could cause gastrointestinal upset or diarrhea.
People who think they have a urinary tract infection should see
a health care provider for proper diagnosis and treatment. Cranberry products should not be used to treat infection.
Note: There are some indications that cranberry should be
used cautiously by people who take blood-thinning drugs (such
as warfarin), medications that affect the liver, or aspirin.
Tell all your health care providers about any complementary
health approaches you use. Give them a full picture of what you
do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and
safe care. For tips about talking with your health care providers
about complementary health approaches, see NCCIHs Time to
Talk campaign.

Healing with
Holy Fire Reiki
An introduction

By Kathy Milanowski, Reiki Master

oly Fire Reiki is a new refined energy developed in

2014 by William Rand of the International Center of
Reiki Training (ICRT). As a Reiki teacher I felt called
to deepen my healing studies by learning this refined energy. I
am very grateful that I decided to attend a workshop in Michigan
taught by William himself. I became a professional member of the
ICRT. In the beginning of class, William himself stated that this
Reiki frequency has no lineage, unlike the Usui system.
Right away I have found that working with this new refined
frequency, Holy Fire, only enhances Usui and Karuna Reiki, and
all other training I have studied.
There are so many meanings and our own interpretations to
words, and this influences our life experiences. Holy Fire Reiki
has no religious connotations to it there is no dogma. The word
holy has the root meaning, to be whole and complete. Holy Fire
is a spiritual energy that creates wholeness through purification,
healing, empowering and guidance. Although with our society,
it is easier to relate when you place tags on something to have
something that people can relate to. With this said, everything
and everyone is constantly evolving, and Reiki is no different.

My own experience

Once I came home from my studies, it was quite apparent to my

family, friends and clients just how differently I saw myself. I have
a greater understanding of all life because of what occurred inside
my being. I was healing past my core, into everything. I noticed
everything around me started to mend. I now see things more
clearly. I simply understand things with a deep knowing. Loved
ones, students, and clients began seeing these results as well.
I would like to explain something: Holy Fire
experiences/meditations are not self-guided, in fact the Holy
Fire frequency guides those that are open because Reiki honors
free will. These experiences only a Holy Fire master can offer are
really experiences with the Holy flame.
I recently taught a Reiki I & II class with Holy Fire, and the
feedback was phenomenal. Although you can only channel Holy
Fire once you are a Master, the attunement process is with the
Holy Fire frequency. This class was a mixture of Reiki Masters and
www.naturespathways.com

beginners, and each left with a deep healing experience and guidance. Even as the instructor, I experienced the same depths!
Each student that day spoke exactly like I felt when I was taking
the class. The connection was an experience I have never come
across in my teaching career. The gentleness of the divine, the
flame intensity ignited in each of them guiding them how to heal,
purify their own frequency to reach beyond ego. We are such
beautiful souls, and have so much potential because we continuously evolve as all creation. We are deeply loved and should realize
this. May we all walk in love.
To become a certified Holy Fire Master you have a few options.
Take Art/Master or Karuna Holy Fire Reiki from a qualified
Master, you can look this up on http://www.reikiwebstore.com/
HolyFireStudentList.cfm. Once you enroll in a class, if taught by
an official ICRT instructor, you as a student should get a book by
the ICRT in class, along with a certificate.
Kathy Milanowski is the founder of the Carriage House, Reiki Training & Magical Essentials, 119 S. Main St, Deerfield. She is a certified professional member by the ICRT, Master/Teacher Usui Holy
Fire ,Karuna Reiki, Ra-Sheeba Reiki and other healing modalities.
Kathy shares her own private healing sessions, classes and events, as
well as the gifts and expertise of other light workers to her center to share with the
surrounding communities. For more information, call 425-220-6283, or visit www.

Jane
discovers
the BioMat
to help her
family

t seems like families of children with autism or other disorders are always on the lookout for alternative services, and
our family is no different. We have found that the medical
conditions that arise from our child are not necessarily textbook
examples. We have had to learn to search and think outside the
box to find solutions that fit our child and familys needs. That is
where BioMat 4 Autism has been a perfect fit for our family!
Our experience begins with the quiet, calming and nurturing
atmosphere that is created when you enter the McFarland Family
Wellness Center, where BioMat 4 Autism is located. Debbie
Armstrong starts each relationship with a thorough consultation
to discover what services might be the best fit for your specific
needs.
Debbie goes through school issues, nutritional needs, sensory
concerns, sleep, pain, behavioral issues and so much more. She
was able to uncover some nonintegrated primitive reflexes that
not even our OT had brought to our attention.
Every time I go into the center I feel nurtured and safe. It doesnt
matter if I am there to pick up an essential oil blend, nutritional
supplement, for an autism movement class, or other private session
for my daughter I am always welcomed with open arms. Debbie
is very knowledgeable and I have learned so much from her.
BioMat 4 Autism has so much to offer, and there isnt one
service that I wouldnt recommend to others. Speaking of
services, I was amazed at Debbies skills and the variety of services
available through BioMat 4 Autism. If your child, or even you,
are in need of a weighted blanket to help with sensory integration issues you can get one made to your specifications. Are you
32

having difficulties with school issues or not sure about your childs
IEP? Debbie has some very creative ideas and will support you
through the process. Brain training and color therapy are great for
those with attention deficit/attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD), autism or other learning disabilities.
I love using the BioMat. I always feel energized and relaxed
after my session. The effects of the BioMat continue beyond each
use and have helped me regain control of my life. Before purchasing the mini BioMat for our daughter, Debbie allowed us to rent
it for several weeks to be sure that it was exactly what we needed.
We saw our daughter wake up each morning happy and calm. She
was able to begin interacting with her peers at school and was
even better able to follow directions at school. If she starts to melt
down, we have her sit on the BioMat and in about 15-20 minutes

Red hot
natural
summer
style!

By Angela Kowieski

eet Jen. She is the manager at Divine Body &

Styles, a busy mom of 2 boys and needed a new
look! We chose her for this months makeover
because even beauty professionals sometimes need some updating and advice from others. When you get busy taking care of
others, it can be pretty easy to forget about yourself and fall into
a beauty rut. We renewed Jens hair and makeup to give her that
youthful and glamorous appearance she deserves!

Renewing Jens hair

The color: Jens color just wasnt complementing her skin tone and
beautiful eye color. I wanted to enhance her green eye color so I
deepened her hair color with a bright organic red copper tone and
added some golden blonde highlights to give her hair dimension.
The cut: Jen has fine, slightly wavy hair that looked thinner
toward the bottom due to breakage. I cut about 4 inches off the
back to give her that Sarah Jessica Parker look from Sex in the
City. I also added some face framing bangs and volumizing layers
to give her hair body and movement for a fuller look.
The style: Jen loved the sexy Carrie from Sex in the Citys bouncy
curls. To achieve that look we placed Volume Mousse and Velcro
rollers in Jens hair. Once dry we touched up the curls with a
inch curling iron and broke apart the curls. Presto change-o,
Carrie has arrived!

Customizing Jens makeup

Preparing her skin: Miriam primed Jens skin with a moisturizing skin primer so that it would fill in any fine lines and smooth
her complexion prior to the makeup application. This will also
help to keep the makeup on longer and stay true to tone colors.
The makeup application:
1. Miriam started with a concealer to even out Jens skin tone
to create a perfect pallet to begin the makeup application.
2. Then a tinted moisturizer was applied to add even more
www.naturespathways.com

moisturizer to fill in any fine lines and smooth her skin.

3. Next, a Fruit Pigmented powder was applied to give
further coverage, even out skin tone and smooth fine lines.
4. Miriam then added a matte taupe colored eye shadow over
Jens whole eyelid. (Matte tones are recommended for aging skin
since they will decrease the appearance of fine lines and creases
on the lid). She then applied a deep olive green eye shadow to the
outer corners of Jens lid in a sideways V to create an olive tone
smokey eye and accent the natural green tones in her eye color.
5. A black liquid eyeliner was then applied to give a sharp
line on the top of the lid outlining her eye shape.
6. Miriam then applied Black Tea mascara and some of our
party lashes to give her eyelashes length and also to draw attention
to her eyes.
7. Next a bronzer was placed on Jens cheekbones to give her
a nice natural glow.
8. The look was then finished with a strawberry tone lip tint
to draw attention to her beautiful lips and to go with her red hot
hair color.
Jen is now ready for summer with red hot style! Watch for our
monthly makeovers and natural beauty tips from professionals!

Natures Pathways | June 2015

1. By accepting that when two people

share their lives, their bodies, their

fortunes, its unavoidable that they
will experience many, many conflicts.
Compatibility is important, but the
goal cannot be to eliminate conflict.
2. Conscious couples recognize that each
partner will react to conflicts in their
own way, feeling emotional triggers
unique to each of their life histories.
3. The goal becomes to discover why
you are fighting, whats underneath
the surface dispute, and then take
responsibility for your part in it.
In working with couples that come to us for
help, its this deeper level of commitment
that makes the difference in outcomes.
Without each being willing to explore
and share their own inner experiences of
emotional reactions and psychological
habits, they will never understand how they
trigger each other, subconsciously, in ways
that have less to do with the current situation and more to do with experiences from
earlier in life, often childhood. For example,
that resentment over the TV remote control
may actually reflect a life pattern of people
pleasing that started in childhood, nothing
to do with your partner.
When couples begin to act as allies,
www.naturespathways.com

rather than as opponents, they learn how

to turn conflicts into explorations of self.
This is when relationships get awesome.
Partners can search together for clues and
pieces of the past to heal and transform
so that the present can be liberated from
habitual reactions and reframed.
Without this, relationships can become
tiring, stale or broken. Repeated disputes
can become silent standoffs, played out
sometimes in seconds, but affecting every
part of a couples existence, including their
sex life. Its deadening. And after a while,
they can become blind to its affects.
So why do people resist getting help?
Well, people tend to have good reasons.
They dont want to hurt their partner with
the real truth or upset the apple cart and
risk more instability, or feel out of control,
or lose what little good they have. They
may think theyve communicated as best
they can.
In our work, we help couples discover
their blind spots. Each time it happens is
an incredible, liberating and energizing
breakthrough for both people. It takes so
much energy to stay blind and repressed.
When couples renew their willingness to
be emotionally honest with each other, as
conscious partners, not only do they typically find more authentic resolution to their
conflicts, but they can also create a more
vibrant bond of attraction and excitement.
Each feels the synergy of the relationship affecting their own sense of personal
growth and fulfillment. There is gratitude
and love, even though more conflicts are
inevitably on the horizon. Vulnerability
and honesty are a strong aphrodisiac.
Families and society have not done a
good job of modeling this for most of us.
The good news is that it can be learned
from couples that have done the deeper
work and know how to teach and coach in
safe and nurturing ways.

43/90 North
Earth Gifts
A place of
inspiration

hey say it is all about location, and there could be no better

location for 43/90 North Earth Gifts than the welcoming
village of Spring Green softly nestled as it is in the scenic
beauty of the Wisconsin River Valley. Here in 2000, Cecilia Farran
created a haven of peaceful ambience and carefully set about
sourcing spiritually supportive gifts. She chose to name her shop
for its global address thus honoring the natural and spiritual
vibrancy of the landscape. And for the last fifteen years she has
welcomed all to this gentle and upscale resource.
Growing up Cecilia was drawn to the world of spirit and her
familys dairy farm offered her an opportunity for a quiet contemplative life rooted in nature and solitude. As an adult her passion
is still for the world of the unseen and North Earth has become a
vehicle to aid others in their search for inner peace and balance.
Not only is North Earth a resource for spiritual gifts, but it provides
a tranquil atmosphere with plenty of space for peaceful browsing
and rejuvenation as well as an opportunity for gentle conversation.
Within its peaceful interior is the Wisdom Oak Reading Room
with over a thousand titles of self-help and spiritual inquiry
including ancient wisdom, sacred geometry, sound healing, new
thought, earth energies and Celtic and goddess studies. These
books and this contemplative space is the core of the North Earth
experience, Cecilia says. Books have voices and I carefully select
them for the wisdom they contain.
Cecilia also believes in creating joy and ambience in ones
personal space and offers a Tranquility Garden Room featuring
fountains, zen statuary, beautiful artist designed peace poles and
other hand selected items to make ones home and garden an
oasis of tranquility. I want to encourage others to create spaces
of inspired living. Two of my most favorite items are a large wind
chime temple bell for space clearing and a wind chime tuned to
Amazing Grace, which contains a special receptacle for cremains.
And there are gifts to sooth the spirit including a crystal bowl
gallery, gems and crystals, symbolic silver and gemstone jewelry,

fairy garden decor, Doreen Virtue Angel Card decks, oils, incense,
sage, Palo Santo, Oberon leather journals, frame drums, native
flutes, a Sounds True listening station, Capiz tea candle holders,
dream catchers, fair trade sourced jackets and scarves, and the fun
Advice From. T-shirts and mugs. Cecilia especially highlights
the spiritual soothing music of local artists such as Rahbi Crawford on crystal bowls, Peter Phippen on indigenous flutes and
Celia whose beautiful voice and deep lyrics transform and inspire.
True to Cecilias mission statement, bringing peace, joy and
beauty to our earth journey, 43/90 North Earth hosts Play at
Our Place events that focus on lighthearted group gatherings to
explore the joy of the spiritual path with such diverse experiences
as Kirtan, a clutter busting fire ceremony (New Years event),
hands-on playing of crystal bowls, book signings, performances,
the how-tos of Doreen Virtues tarot angel cards, a Celtic music
Christmas party, soul collage and zentangle art.
Warm weather activities sponsored by North Earth take place
in their beautiful courtyard presided over by an ancient spirit
oak, a Designated Wisconsin Champion Tree. June 20 marks the
Midsummer Magic Psychic Fair, and July 10-11 is Chalk Our
Walk Walk Your Talk Sidewalk Art Days. We provide the
chalk. You provide the art and inspirational sayings. On October
4 pets are welcome for the St Francis Day Blessing of the Animals,
with special appearance of sweet Uncle Butzie the rescue turkey
vulture and a special memorial for endangered species.
Cecilia looks forward to welcoming you.

Dance outside
the box and
rewire your
brain

By Debbie Armstrong

veryday life and social interactions could be looked at as a

finely tuned dance. But for some that dance is not so synchronized and connected. Individuals with autism and other
neurodevelopmental delays are more and more observed as being
out of sync with their internal and external environments in active
ways that must also involve operations of the peripheral nervous
systems. These difficulties can inhibit speech, memory, balance and
the ability to engage.
Billions of dollars have been spent on research to discover the
best methods, approaches and ways for families to treat autism
and other neurodevelopmental delays. Families consistently search
outside the box for alternative methods of supporting their children. I would like to talk about dance and movement as approaches
to rewire the neurological development of these individuals.
Developmentally there are eight essential movement patterns that
human beings automatically move through from 0-12 months of
age. These developing movement patterns wire the central nervous
system setting the foundation for sensory motor development and
life-long learning. When patterns are lost, unused or disrupted, there
most likely will be gaps in a persons neurological development. These
mislaid gaps can be the origin of neurological dysfunctions that can
later appear as learning disabilities, memory difficulties, behavior
disorders, sleep difficulties, speech and communication obstructions,
balance or filtering problems, and a multitude of other difficulties
that can interrupt the course of normal development.
A combination of music, dance and movement helps the brain to
restructure itself, which opens up the probability of more connections with others. Altogether dance and movement oxygenates the
brain, exercises the muscles, releases endorphins, and connects the
cognitive and emotional mind to the lucid body. Dancing builds
and reinforces neural connections between the vast circuitry of the
brain. Dance expresses what we know and what we feel wordlessly.
It has the power to reveal the imagination of the concrete thinker
and empower them to impart expression to their inner life, which
is crucial to children or adults who struggle with supplementary
approaches to communication. Current research shows that by
www.naturespathways.com

re-patterning the neurological pathways the brain and body are

able to coordinate social, emotional and cognitive balance.
Because there is such a wide spectrum when treating autism
and other neurodevelopmental delays, there isnt one best entry or
beginning point. Instead, we need to look at each person individually to determine the best beginning point for dance and movement to rewire the brain.

Reverse
brainstorming:
What is the most
unsustainable
funeral a person
could
plan?

By Jonas Zahn

mployed by Speedo researchers in 2009, reverse brainstorming is a creative thinking technique that helped the
team conceptualize new designs for competitive swimwear
when the companys revolutionary and controversial swimsuits
were banned after the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Experts
in fluid dynamics, biomechanics and psychology envisioned a
combination of oversized goggles and a body-compressing suit to
create drag. Imagining the opposite of what we want helps hone
our creative thinking for an outcome we do want.
Imagine four couples enjoying cocktails after dinner on an
outdoor patio at a nearby supper club. My wife and I make sustainable caskets and that evening we shared company with an attorney,
a physician, a painter, a funeral director and two pharmacists. We
reverse brainstormed on funeral choices that would be harmful to
the environment. We considered choices with a large carbon footprint, toxic pollution, poor land use, unfair trade and every other
way that a funeral could be terrible for the environment.
We had fun reverse brainstorming the worst possible outcomes
for the environment. We concluded our brainstorming with
many good laughs and each of us left with ideas to improve our
own end-of-life plans.

What might a funeral service look like from a

reverse perspective on sustainability?

We agreed cremation is the worst for the environment with

a carbon footprint of 350 to 600 pounds of CO2. But first wed
conduct a full service funeral with our embalmed body displayed
in a casket. After all, a large number of cremations in the U.S.
are embalmed. In addition to the carbon footprint, cremation
generates emissions of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, sulfur
dioxide, particulate matter, mercury, hydrogen fluoride (HF),
38

Natures Pathways | June 2015

"We agreed cremation is the

hydrogen chloride (HCl), NMVOCs and other heavy metals, in
addition to Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP). For those of us
with metal implants or dental fillings, the impact of incineration
releases harmful dioxins and mercury. There is an ongoing debate
on mercury poisoning from cremation, which the United States
EPA believes is the 3rd largest contributor of air-born mercury
contamination. Just to be sure, wed ask that some of our personal
things containing precious metals be cremated with us (jewelry,
watches, iPhone).
We considered incinerating a hardwood or steel casket, but we
agreed the worst outcome for the environment is one of those
natural burial caskets made from seagrass and imported from
Asia. While biodegradable, a seagrass casket weighing 70 pounds
has a carbon impact of more than 2,500 pounds of CO2 larger
than that of an imported stainless steel casket due to transportation. The journey from Asia via ocean freight isnt that bad, but
the air freight from Los Angeles to Wisconsin is pretty bad. No
doubt this is the worst possible outcome in terms of carbon footprint. Even worse is if our seagrass casket comes from a controversial area where fisheries have been compromised by seagrass
farming or our seagrass casket is woven by the hands of underpaid
laborers (or even children).
Our funeral visitation is typically followed by a full service
www.naturespathways.com

funeral the next day at a church for the added fuss of transportation. Next our body is transported (again) for cremation. After
cremation our remains are interred at a cemetery with another
memorial service so that everyone starts their car three times to
pay their respects as a result of our death. All three of our funeral
events are thoroughly adorned with cut flowers another industry rife with environmental concerns and energy controversies.
Our cremated remains are interred in a concrete vault in a fullsized cemetery plot next to our loved ones. We picked a cemetery
that uses only the finest pesticides and herbicides to maintain a
plush green lawn manicured regularly with two-stroke oil-burning trimmers and leaf blowers. Oh, and the trees! We picked a
cemetery with a policy of not replacing those messy trees. After
all of this, we could leave a larger impact on the environment in
the days after our death than we may have in the final years of our
living lives.

Its thyme for

beautiful
skin

By Lisa Brill

THYME VS. ACNE THE WINNER IS...

...thyme! An ancient herb with uses in cooking, floral arranging

and in gardens sprinkled between pavers is so welcoming with
its delicate flowers and fresh aroma, its also delightful to have as
a favorite herb in skincare formulations. This aromatic herb is
an organic and effective beauty treatment. Filled with beneficial
vitamins and minerals vitamins A, B-complex, C, E, K and
beta-carotene its welcome in both the spice drawer and in the
medicine cabinet.
The study of thyme and its variety of health and skin benefits
has been making its way through the medical community. It has
been tested and is shown to be effective at combating this four
letter word: acne. Many are familiar with benzoyl peroxide to
treat a spot or irritation. Thyme is gentler on the skin than these
and other types of acne-zapping products because of the antiinflammatory components and natural complexion of the herb
itself. Using traditional lotions and creams with benzoyl peroxide
or alcohol can dry the complexion, which can alert the skin to
produce more oil leading again to more oil production, clogging,
and thus producing a never-ending circle. The organic thyme herb
can be blended together with sea buckthorn berry, chamomile

and other skin loving botanical oils. It is effective at fighting the

bacterium that causes acne, as well as keeping the skin soft and
treating the area to help prevent the nuisance from coming back
for a visit.
Utilizing natural and effective treatments is important. Avoid
extracts and alcohol, as they are often too harsh for sensitive skin.
Using the thyme plant and its oil to break down acne-causing
bacteria is a wonderful alternative to the synthetic medications
found on many shelves. It has natural anti-inflammatory benefits,
and the thyme oil is even shown to fight various bacteria that are
resistant to antibiotics.
Antioxidants are necessary to help fight against free radicals and
premature aging. Fresh and organic thyme herbs contain the highest
level of antioxidants in all of the herb family. Its a wonder herb for
skin needing a boost of healing assistance, or just a gentle nudge.
So the next time you reach for this seasoning from your spice
rack, be thankful for these little herbs that not only add panache
to your recipes, but also can calm and heal a complexion upset.
Thyme to get glowing!

Partner with your

bodywork therapist
to
achieve results

By Heidi Aschenbrenner, LMBT, CCT, NCBTMB, Member AOBTA

meet a fair amount of people who think of massage and bodywork as a luxury, something to treat oneself to on special occasions. While it is a true massage, feels wonderful and is a great
way to celebrate, it seems these people are missing out on a huge
opportunity to improve their overall daily health. When people
like this come into my practice, I can usually see lots of benefits to
regular bodywork that they would experience if they allowed themselves to take care of their bodies. And even if they agree its a good
idea to do it more often, we wont see them again for months.
Self-care is important it is not a luxury at all! We all know
to put on our own oxygen mask first in the very unlikely event
that our airplane loses cabin pressure, but not all of us know how
to take care of our own body, mind and soul. Massage and bodywork address all three of those, and it feels good too! Granted,
sometimes bodywork doesnt feel great if we have super tight or
knotted areas, or areas that have been causing pain in the body
for some time. Sometimes it does need to feel worse before it
feels better. But that doesnt mean that massage feels wonderful
but has no benefits; it absolutely does. We depend on and expect
our bodies to carry us from one activity to the next, and we often
have such expectations without giving it the appropriate care. Its
no wonder so many people have aches and pains, since bodies
are contracting during exercise and fast-paced living, yet not very
often getting stretched, soothed, or returned to their elongated
state filled with wonderful oxygen. So even an average Jane or Joe
who has no complaints can benefit greatly from massage.
Some physical issues can be resolved quickly and efficiently
with bodywork, but others are more complex and deeper within.
Those in this category often know they need bodywork to address
an issue, and they expect if they just keep showing up to regular
massage appointments then their issues will magically be resolved
without any effort on their part. While massage or other bodywork
is a great and appropriate thing to do for a great many chronic
conditions, it is only part of the equation and only goes so far. The
recipient bears the responsibility to fill that gap and to partner with
the therapist to really see some fantastic results. Filling the gap can
42

Natures Pathways | June 2015

be done with
emotional
or
spiritual healing,
or even by
changing
some regular
habits that are creating the pattern we are trying to change. The
bodyworker gets an hour with someone every few weeks, and
those habits get a significant more amount of time.
Personally, I have found that true healing is multilayered. Pain
in the body can be as simple as surface level, but chronic issues
usually have an emotional, energetic and spiritual component.
Each person on the journey of healing needs to seek healing on
all these layers. And very importantly, communicate with the
therapist before, during and after sessions about what is working
and not working, what is being felt and experienced, or anything
else that feels relevant. A therapist can often read signals the body
gives, but a therapist can never know what a client is thinking,
feeling or wanting without being told. The more input a therapist
receives, the more efficient that therapy session will be.
Whether you are looking to massage and bodywork for relaxation, to heal an old injury or provide relief from chronic pain that
affects your daily activities, it is vital that you see your relationship
with your therapist as a partnership. Your therapist needs your input
to get to the core of the issues that you want to resolve. Together, you
can journey through the path of healing to the other side.

Over 2,000
visitors expected
at fifth annual
Mad City
Vegan
Fest

he fifth annual Mad City Vegan Fest will take place at the
Goodman Community Center on Saturday, June 27 from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free event features renowned speakers, cooking demonstrations, exhibitors, a raffle and delicious
food (free samples and larger portions for purchase).
Last years fest drew over 2,000 local and out-of-town visitors.
Fest organizer Gina Stuessy said, Its a great opportunity for the
public to learn more about protecting animals, the environment,
and their health. Everyone is welcome from omnivores who are
just curious, to longtime vegans and vegetarians.
This years speakers include authors Kristin Lajeunesse and Matt
Ruscigno. With a passion for food, Lajeunesse quit her job in 2011
and traveled the country to eat at and write about every vegan
restaurant in the U.S. Shell share her experiences and explain how
her adventures changed her life. Ruscigno is a registered dietitian
who will talk about the rising popularity of veganism with athletes
and what a healthy diet for an athlete looks like.
A highlight for me is always the tasty food you can buy at the
fest from local restaurants, said Stuessy. Last year we had six
food vendors serving everything from vegan wings, jambalaya,

and mac and cheese to vegan ice cream and chocolate cake. There
are also lots of free samples to try.
Mad City Vegan Fest is a project of Alliance for Animals and
the Environment. A complete list of speakers, exhibitors and
vendors can be found at www.veganfest.org.

Men who are making a difference

Greg Griffin
Greg Griffin, owner of Float Madison,
a floatation therapy center opening in
Madison this summer, envisions a world
where everybody is genuinely happy,
they love. Hes always put others ahead
what
healthy and doing
of himself, but has also learned the importance of taking time
for ourselves. He discovered floatation therapy 5 years ago,
and it has been an instrumental tool in helping him realize his
true potential. At first he would use it for stress reduction and
recovery from workouts, but after a few floats, he realized the
potential it had for so much more.
Weve all heard or have experienced by now how powerful
massage, yoga, mindfulness and meditation are as modalities
for healing and enhancing the body and mind. But the word
about floatation therapy and its seemingly infinite benefits is
still making its way into mainstream consciousness.
At Float Madison, you will be able to experience true rest
and relaxation in your choice of float pods or float rooms. With
about 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt saturating 10 inches of clear,
skin temperature water, your body will float effortlessly. Not
having to fight gravity, your muscles, bones and joints unwind
and relax while your skin absorbs the mineral rich Epsom salt.
You dim the lights and your senses are completely relieved from
the noise and stress of your busy day. Your mind shifts to a more
relaxed state, refocusing its energy on healing the body and
boosting creativity and thought. Stress, pain and anxiety melt
away, leaving you with an exhilarating feeling for days to come.
A few benefits of floatation therapy:
Alleviates stress, anxiety and depression
Relieves pain and speeds up recovery
Mitigates pregnancy discomfort
Enhances creativity, learning and performance
Heightens mental and spiritual well-being
Promotes total calm and peaceful relaxation
During a float, you can go deep into thought and examine
all areas of your life. Floating has been one of the inspirations for Greg deciding it was possible to open a float center
in his hometown of Madison. He wants everybody to experience floatation therapy because it will help make the world a
healthier and happier place, and it may inspire others to do
things they wouldnt have the courage to do otherwise.

Nick Nowaczyk

Nick has been cultivating the idea of Urbal

Tea since his early childhood. His parents
took the family to their cabin in Northern Wisconsin almost every weekend in
the summer, so he spent a lot of time with
nature. They picked morel mushrooms, blackberries and other
fruits that grew aplenty in the area. His parents taught him at
a young age to respect nature and all living things, and being
outside amongst the glory of Mother Earth gave him a newfound
outlook on the cycle of life and our connection to it. These and
many more life experiences like it directly impacted Nicks desire
to learn about what nature provides for us to heal, refresh and
preserve the vitality of our body and mind.
After college, Nick knew he wanted to start his own business.
His desire was to create something unique and beneficial for all.
Therefore, he started out in Madison as an apprentice studying Herbalism at Wildwood Institute. A year and a half later he
graduated with a Masters in Herbalism. From there he decided to
launch his herbal tea company, Urbal Tea.
Herbal Tea is an easy and healthy way to heal and nourish your
body. Every blend of Urbal Tea contains the highest quality of
freshly dried full leaf herbs. All of their herbal infusions are formulated to assist in the healing, strengthening and preserving of the
entire human body. Urbal Tea works with the body in an all-natural
way to promote balance and good health.
Almost any herbal leaf, flower, seed and root can be made into
a tea. What makes Urbal Tea different is that they only blend
herbs; therefore none of their herbal infusions contain actual tea
or caffeine. Their herbal teas also focus on all the other species
of plants Mother Nature provides they incorporate many local
Wisconsin herbs like nettle, dandelion, burdock and red clover
blossoms. Many of these herbs can be found right in your own
backyard. Herbal tea contains numerous vitamins, minerals, and
antioxidants, and each blend targets a different ailment or need.
Meant to be enjoyed every day, Urbal Teas passion is to help
people kick the processed sugar and caffeine beverages. Drinking
their tea is a simple and easy way to heal and refresh the body.
Please visit www.urbalhealth.com for more details on all the
wonderful blends they offer.
Urbal Tea is liquid for life.

the world into a healthier and happier place in a
holistic way. Emily believes that everyones health is
unique; thus, in order to get out of their rut of fad
diets, exercise plans and support groups, they
need an accountability partner to help them create
realistic goals that they can reach while creating
lifestyle habits along the way.

Dance/Movement Classes
Our dance/movement classes utilize the eight fundamental movement patterns that human beings
are programmed to move through from zero to 12
months. These developmental movement patterns
wire the central nervous system, laying the foundation for sensory-motor development and lifelong
learning. Working through these movement patterns
may correct flaws in a childs perceptual process and
reorganize the central nervous system to better develop proprioception, balance, attention, memory,
eye-tracking, behavior, sensory integration and motor
skills. Neurological repatterning coordinates all parts
of the brain and body for emotional, social and cognitive balance. Register today for one or more classes!

our daily lives. Everyone is welcome to attend these
guided meditations. They are suitable for everyone, regardless of background or experience. Walk-ins are encouraged you will be pleasantly surprised! Location:

$30,000+ annually in free or discounted Equine Assisted
Activities and Therapy services to our community. Volunteers provide time and talents in areas such as: Building

Whatever your skills, we have projects that could benefit, including organizing, office work, marketing/publicity, event management, board of director membership
