Importance
VMware vCenter Server allows you to centrally manage multiple
VMware vSphere ESXi hosts and their virtual machines. Failure to
properly install, configure, and manage vCenter Server could result
in reduced administrative efficiency or possible ESXi host and virtual
machine downtime.

Additional vCenter Server Modules

Optional vCenter Server modules (plug-ins) provide additional

features to vCenter Server.
Examples:
VMware vSphere Update Manager
VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager Plug-In
These modules include a server component and a client component:
The client component is a plug-in available for download and
installation to the VMware vSphere Client after the server
component is installed in vCenter Server.
The client component alters the interface by adding items related to the
enhanced functionality.

About Identity Sources

An identity source is a collection of user and group data.

The user and group data is stored in a repository, such as Active
Directory, LDAP, or a database that is local to SSO or to an operating
system.

vCenter Server 5.1 supports the following types of user repositories

as identity sources:
OpenLDAP versions 2.4 and later
Active Directory versions 2003 and later
Local operating system users
You can attach multiple identity sources from each type to a single
sign-on server.

Inventory Object: Tagging

Ability to create custom tags on inventory objects

Associate an arbitrary set of objects of the same type using a tag:
Search for objects by that tag
Enable a business case where customers want to create arbitrary
groups of VMS, clusters, and datastores for ease of management
