GOOGLE GLASSES

____________________________________________________________
INTRODUCTION
Google glass is a new type of technology that provides all the
features that a user can get from a tablet, or phone, whether it is an
iPhone, android or any new technology in form of glasses. It can
film, take pictures, act as a sat nav for giving directions, search for
topics on Google, play the role of a translator and much more. It is a
new way of sharing what people do in their day to day life.It has a
small camera that can see what you are doing. If a user asks it
Google glass, take a photo, or Google Glass record a video it would
with the sound of his/her voice through the microphone, based on
what he/she is seeing,as it is a kind of spectacle frame.
Initially,it was released to a group of selected individuals called
Explorers, who were able to experience the Google Glass and
provide feedback to Google. In 2011, the first Google Glass
prototype weighed nearly eight pounds. In 2012, after the eightpound prototype but before the Explorers trial run, Google Glass
made appearances on the Gavin Newsom Show, at a Google
Input/Output seminar where those in attendance were able to watch
a live feed from a skydiver, and even at a hospital in Madrid, where
the Spanish doctor Pedro Guillen, Chief of Trauma Service of Clnica
CEMTRO of Madrid, became the first physician in the world to
broadcast a surgery through the use of Google Glass. From the
prototype in 2011 to the Google Glass Explorer 2G version, Google
doesnt seem to be slowing down any time soon.
In addition to the new 2GB version, an update late last year saw a
tweaked form factor that made prescription glasses compatible with
attachable frames.

BENEFITS
Its camera and video recording features make it effortless to snap a
picture or record a short video. Just by looking at a scenic beauty or
watching a movie, Google Glass is able to identify the direction its
user is looking, automatically focus the lens, and then when it hears
the words OK Glass, shoot or video or record, it does just that.
As of now Google Glass is only set up to connect to Google Maps on
an Android phone or Bluetooth user, not specific to any other
products other than the Android. There was no further information
stating if Apple will want to connect to this product with their
phones or iPads.
Being able to have a hands free device that has a recognisable
microphone set up for a users convenience to be used whenever
wherever, because of the Wi-Fi device placed in the Glass will be
useful to all of its users.

ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS

Since the device is on the eyes, just like spectacles, there might be
some potential misuses of the device. An average person would
either not know of the device or not know there are being filmed or
photographed, which could cause legal issues or more.
Another privacy concern that cropped was that cheating just
became a whole lot easier during examinations. This could be
possible as a user could receive the answers to a test, email them,
and then access the data via the Google Glass. The answers are
right in front and no one will suspect anything. Its all because the
user would be just looking down at the test. An online chat room
can also be accessed with the device, using the Hangout app, and
everyone in the group will get an access to what the users glasses
are seeing. It could be looking at a confidential file, surveying a
house, stalking a group of young students or anything that human
eyes have a potential to see. These can all become new group chat
activities and shown to unauthorised people.

To fix these issues, research is still underway. Even though the

glasses do not have a very long battery backup and the recordings
cannot be long enough, one of the solutions, that Google has come
up with is that a light go off or show up with a sound effect, when a
picture is being taken or something is getting filmed. It will notify
the people around the user about recordings done, if any. This
would prove to be fruitful in public areas and classrooms during
examinations.
A Security research firm found a glitch that allowed hackers to use
QR codes to take control of the wearable device. The vulnerability
was patched by Google, clearing the way for Lookout to detail how
the exploit worked. Using a malicious QR code, Lookout was able to
force Glass to silently connect to a Wi-Fi access point, which gave
the researchers a reading access to all of the data flowing through
the device. When combined with an Android 4.0.4 web vulnerability,
the hack apparently gave researchers full control of the Glass
headset.
This security glitch that raised concerns over hacking of user data in
glasses is being fixed by Google too. A Google spokesperson writes
that the company recognises the importance of building devicespecific protections, and were experimenting with solutions as we
work to make Glass more broadly available.
This gives a clear indication that the security vulnerabilities of Glass
only exist in the headsets experimental version and will be fixed in
the device before it hits a wider market.
Not only Google glasses faced technical issues, but it also
encountered a hardware issue as well. As per peoples thinking, the
small and compact size of this device makes it fragile and
vulnerable to damage due to rough use.
As per the companys response to this query, they have assured
their customers that the newer models will be manufactured using
strong alloys. Thus making it sturdy and durable.

CONCLUSION

As per the benefits and drawbacks encountered with Google glasses

and the researches being done in this field, I incline my decision in
an affirmative direction. Google glass is a new technology which will
simplify the human life and it will help them to become more
organised. The security issues being encountered in the
experimental version of this technology are being scrutinised. Its
basic use would be for Photography & Video; Sending messages;
and Google search, translation and navigation. Google Glass will be
the next big thing for centuries to come. People will be able to have
access to the worlds information, interact with people while using
their Google Glass and even more.
