A commitment to serving customers

L.T. Hampel Corp. makes industry list
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
For the L.T. Hampel Corp., a recent ranking in an industry publication was not a surprise, but a goal achieved.
L.T. Hampel Corp., located at W194
N11551 McCormick Drive in Germantown,
was founded by Lance T. Hampel in 1976 and
employs 130 people at its 200,000-square
foot facility.
The company specializes in heavy gauge
thermoforming, a process in which a plastic
sheet is heated to a pliable temperature and
formed to a specific shape in a mold. Vacuum
forming, pressure forming and twin-sheet forming are all areas of expertise for Hampel.
Earlier this year, L.T. Hampel Corp. was
ranked 10th for industrial thermoforming by
Plastics News. During a recent interview, company President Paul A. Lorge said that in the
past the company had been in the 20 to 30
range in the annual ranking.
"A couple of years ago we made it one of
our internal goals to crack that top 10, as part
of what we drive our employees toward. We
want to be a leader in the industry we serve
and making the list in Plastics News helps reaffirm that leadership position," Lorge said.
He said that getting into the top 10 in the
ranking was the achievement of a goal that
involved all 130 employees coming together.
"It affirms the commitment that we have to
our customers, it affirms the commitment that
we have to our employees to continue to
push and provide high quality products at

great prices with excellent customer service,"

Lorge said. "Customers keep coming back to
us, we continue to grow, we continue to provide more and more opportunities for employees. It does affirm what we've been doing for
30-plus years."
At the start of the interview, Lorge
described company founder Lance T. Hampel
as a "serial inventor and an entrepreneur" who
has more than 20 patents to his name.
Hampel started with a smaller company in the
industry and advanced to an operations manager at that company. When Lance Hampel
was 32-years-old, he started the company by
renting a 5,000-square-foot building a few
blocks away from the current company facility.
Hampel started the company with a forklift, a
thermoformer that was in pieces and one
employee. Early customers included
International Harvester, Bendix and John
Deere.
"Always an engineer by trade and by
practice and just an inventor inquisitive
mind," Lorge said of Hampel. "A guy who was
in search of problems that he knows he can
provide solutions to."
That has included creating the proprietary
Calf-Tel calf hutches, which are used as housing for calves. Lorge said the company has
approximately 55 to 60 percent of that market
worldwide, and has more than 400,000
hutches in service used to raise more than two
million calves each year. Lorge said the company ships the product to 40 countries.
"Where there are cows or calves, you'll
find the Calf-Tel product," Lorge said. He fur-

The L.T. Hampel Corp. (shop area pictured above) recently was named a top 10
industrial thermoformer by an industry publication.
ther explained that the knowledge of dairy
industry from employees is part of the success
behind the Calf-Tel line.
"We provide a plastic housing solution for
calves. But with our sales force, most of which
have experience in the dairy (industry), they
are very familiar with the animals, they're really consultants on calf care, Lorge said.
They're not just selling a product; we're selling a solution that provides better care for your
calves making them more productive members
of the herd."
Lorge also noted that the success of the

company stems from the commitment to finding solutions to the needs faced by its customer base.
"We get excited about providing solutions
to their challenges and their opportunities. To
stay in the good graces of your customers for
40 years says you're doing something right,"
Lorge said. "It says you're paying attention to
the things they need, you're providing extraordinary customer service, it's something we
take pride in, that we have longevity with a lot
of our customers."

National Cancer Survivors Day celebrated worldwide

The following information was taken from
the National Cancer Survivors Day Web site.
On Sunday, June 7, 2015, tens of thousands of people around the world will gather
in their local communities to observe the 28th
annual National Cancer Survivors Day.

Hundreds of cities across the U.S. and abroad

will hold celebrations on this day to honor cancer survivors, to bring attention to the ongoing
challenges of cancer survivorship, and to show
the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can
be fruitful, rewarding, and inspiring.
National Cancer Survivors Day is an
annual worldwide Celebration of Life that is
held on the first Sunday in June. It is the one
day each year when everyone joins forces to
recognize the cancer survivors living in our
communities and raise awareness of the ongoing challenges they face. NCSD also provides
an opportunity for cancer survivors to connect
with other survivors, celebrate the milestones
theyve achieved, and acknowledge the family
members, friends, and healthcare professionals who have supported them along the way.
A survivor is anyone living with a history
of cancer from the moment of diagnosis
through the remainder of life, according to the
National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation,
administrator for the celebration.
For the vast majority of survivors, cancer

is no longer the automatic death sentence that

it was a few decades ago, says Foundation
spokesperson, Laura Shipp. The reality is that,
among U.S. adults, the 5-year relative survival
rate for all cancers combined is now approximately 68 percent. In 1987, the year that
NCSD began, that number was just 56 percent.
National Cancer Survivors Day is an
opportunity for cancer survivors to join with
each other and celebrate this new reality in
cancer survivorship that more people are living
longer and better quality lives after cancer
than ever before. It is also an opportunity to
bring attention to the challenges these survivors face after diagnosis, and sometimes
even years after treatment ends.
NCSD started in the United States in 1987,
and it is now celebrated worldwide in countries including Canada, Australia, India, South
Africa, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Italy, and
Malaysia, according to Shipp.
More Americans than ever are surviving
cancer. According to the American Cancer

Societys Cancer Treatment & Survivorship

Facts & Figures 2014 2015, there are 14.5
million cancer survivors alive in the US today,
and that number is expected to grow to almost
19 million by 2024. Even though cancer incidence rates are dropping, the number of cancer survivors is rising due, in part, to earlier
detection and better treatments. As the number
of cancer survivors continues to grow, it will be
more important than ever to address the
unique needs of these survivors.
To say that surviving cancer is challenging would be an understatement, says Shipp.
But it is a challenge that millions of people
14.5 million in the U.S. alone are overcoming. National Cancer Survivors Day is a celebration of how far weve come in extending
life after cancer. However, the NCSD
Foundation hopes that National Cancer
Survivors Day also serves as a call to action
for more resources, research, and increased
public awareness to improve quality of life
after cancer.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have just been told I have 5 crowns with
cavities under them. Two of these are part of bridges that are
only 1 year old. I floss diligently and brush twice a day. What
could cause cavities around bridges and crowns in such a short
time.
Dear Ann, without seeing x-rays and doing an exam, I can
only tell you that the reasons for decay are as follows:
1. Decay was left inside the tooth when the crowns were
placed.
2. The crowns did not fit properly.
3. You are missing areas with your floss and you may have a
high sugar diet.
4. A microscopic dental lab wasnt used which resulted in
cement leaching out and leaving a gap between the tooth and
crown that became more easily decayed.
Lets examine these one by one. Decay left in a tooth. When
the crown was done, the filling under the crown may have been
old and in need of replacement. If this decay was not found and
removed meticulously, this decay is like a time bomb that will
continue to eat away tooth structure even with a newly
cemented crown. The solution to this is to make sure the dentist
used magnifying glasses and caries stain detectors to insure
there is no decay left inside the tooth. Then a new filling or core
should be done prior to preparing the tooth for a new crown. It
is essential that a crown sit on clean, healthy tooth structure.
Next, the crowns did not fit properly. The type of lab a
dentist selects and their attention to detail will determine how
tight the crown fits on the tooth. The dentist usually selects
dental labs based upon how much the patients insurance pays
to make the crown. If insurance reimbursement is low, the
dentist will select a less expensive lab. Conversely, if a patient
has high esthetic demands, the dentist may use a master
ceramist to insure the crowns will look better, fit better and last
longer.
Today many crowns are sent overseas to receive big
discounts. Your dentist should be able to show you a made in
the USA verification if they have chosen a laboratory in the
United States that uses microscopes for crown fabrication.
The next reason a crown may fail may be from poor oral
hygiene habits and a high sugar diet. The sipping of sugar
sodas, fruit juices, sports drinks and the inability to remove this
sugar with proper brushing and flossing can result in cavities in

a short time. We recommend water and milk and coconut
water as great low sugar drinks! Have your hygienist watch
you brush and floss to assess your techniques!
Lastly, gaps under your crowns will allow cement to leach
out. While there will always be a micro-gap between a crown
and remaining tooth, the larger the gap, the more the cement
can leak out by being exposed to foods and salivary acids.
Ask your dentist if they are using microscopic dental labs.
Do your research! If you have crowns that fail, have your
other crowns assessed to make sure they are serviceable
before any further destruction can occur.
We invite our readers to schedule their comprehensive xray and examination visit. We can discuss implants, crowns,
and cosmetic concerns while assuring you that we use the

End of an era: Community says goodbye to German Glass & Gifts

When the doors of community staple
German Glass & Gifts and Christmas
Chaletlocated in the Richfield Square
Shopping Center, 1280 State Road 175,
Hubertusclose later this summer, an era
will come to an end.
Owners Heinz and Christa Scherzer
are turning off the lights one final time at
what was not only their livelihood, but their
passion for 25 years.
It is bittersweet, Christa said. We
will miss all of this, all the people who
came in. We have served a few generations at this storethe grandparents, then
the parents and now the kids come in.
For a quarter century, the areas last
full-service German store and year-round
Christmas chalet offered its loyal customers
a large selection of German and European
collectibles, exclusive glassware, holiday
decor, music, beauty products, novelty
items, food and chocolates imported
directly from Germany and much more.
The niche store has brought nostalgic
pieces of Deutschlandsuch as the largest
selection of beer steins and glasses in the
Midwest, including beer boots from the
Westerwald; over 1,000 Christmas ornaments; and hand-crafted cuckoo clocksto
the local community.
You just cant find all these things in
one store anymore, said Christa.
German Glass was more than a business to the couple, as they were both born
in Germany and always gave that authentic experience to their customers, often
even speaking German with them.
Heinz was born in Frankfurt and immigrated to America with his mother in 1963
when he was 18. Christa was born in
Nuremberg and immigrated to America
with her parents and two sisters in 1952
when she was five. The pair met at a
Bavarian soccer game in Glendale and
were married in 1966. They have two childrenson Karl, an engineer, and daughter
Heidi, a teacherand six grandchildren.
They are sad to walk away, but it was
time, Christa said. Im 68, Heinz is 70,
and we want to enjoy our home, travel,

and go to our grandchildrens activities

while we are both still healthy.
It has been a long and adventurous
road for the couple as the store was born
out of a completely different venture.
Originally a wholesale operation, the business turned retail after years of requests
from the community. The Scherzers first
opened the retail business in Germantown
and within five years the store was expanded from 200 to 4,000 square feet. In
2008, the couple moved to their current
location, an extravaganza of European
culture come to life.
(Walking into the store) is like traveling to Germany without the airfare, said
Christa.
It has always been about more than
simply making a sale for the Scherzers,
Heinz emphasized.
We have been telling our customers
who come in for the (German) magazines
how they can order them online and they
say, We could have done that 10 years
ago. We come for the experience. Our
customers really want that and they enjoy
the personal experience we give them, he
said.
Customer service has always been key,
Christa agreed.
Weve always prided ourselves on
meeting our customers needs, she said.
We keep records of what people like and
order those things, then let them know
when the items come in.
The couple has gone so far as to contact other area businesses to request they
expand their inventory to include some of
the novelty items the Scherzers regular
customers seek.
(The other businesses) tell us no, its
not worth it, theres not enough money to
be made (in special ordering these products), said Heinz. Thats too bad because
it was never about that for us.
The store is currently holding a liquidation sale of all inventory and fixtures. The
plan is to close for good within the next
few months; however, the couple will continue selling certain products online and at

Husband & Wife Wills

local festivals.
They will also keep
up with their involvement in Milwaukees
G e r m a n
communityHeinz is a
past
President
of
German Fest and they
are members of the
Karnevals Gesellschaft
Rheinischer
Verein
Gruen-Weissand they
plan to make a trip to
their motherland soon.
We have friends
and family in Germany
and our kids have been
exchange
students
there, but it has been
awhile since we have
gone, said Christa.
But now that we have
time, we can go back
and see everyone.
Store hours are 9
a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday
through Friday; 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Saturday; and
11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Sunday. The store is
closed Mondays.
