There are 20questions in total.
Question Nos. 1 to 5 are very short answer type questions and carry one mark each.
Question Nos. 6 to 10 carry two marks each, question no. 11 to 17 carry three marks each, question No. 18
is a value based question carrying 4 marks and question no. 19 and 20carry five marks each.
There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in all questions of five marks. You
have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.
Use of calculators is not permitted. However, you may use log tables if necessary.

1. Name the phenomenon which is responsible for bending of light around sharp corners of an
obstacle. Under what conditions does this phenomenon take place?

The power factor of an AC circuit is 0.5. What will be the phase difference between voltage
and current in this circuit?
What is the self-inductance of a coil when a change of current from 0 to 2 A in 0.5 s induces
an emf of 40 V in it?
A square loop of side l , mass m and resistance R falls vertically into a uniform
magnetic field directed perpendicular to the plane of the coil. Find the height through which
the loop falls so that attains the terminal velocity while falling through the magnetic field.
When an alternating voltage of 220 V is applied across a device A, a current of 0.5 A flows
through the circuit and it is in phase with the applied voltage. When the same voltage is
applied across a device B, again the same current flows in the circuit but it leads the voltage

8. The variation with time ' t ' of the output V of an alternating voltage supply of frequency
50 Hz is shown in Fig.

Use Fig. to state (i) the time ' t ' ,


(ii) the peak value V0 of the voltage,
(iii) the root-mean-square voltage Vrms,
(iv) the mean voltage V.
9. Draw a schematic diagram of a reflecting
telescope (Cassegrain). Write its two
advantages over a refracting telescope.
10. A ray PQ is incident normally on the
face AB of a triangular prism of
refracting angle of 600, as shown in the
figure. Trace the path of the ray as it passes through the prism. Also
calculate the angle of emergence and angle of deviation.

11. (a) Unpolarised light of intensity I0 passes through two polaroids P1 and P2 such that pass
axis of P2 makes an angle with the pass axis of P1. Plot a graph showing the variation of
intensity of light transmitted through P2 as the angle varies from 00 and 1800.
(b) A third Polaroid P3 is located between P1 and P2 with pass axis of P3 making an angle
with that of P1. If I1, I2 and I3 represent the intensities of light transmitted by P1, P2 and P3,
determine the values of angle and for which I1 = I2 = I3.
12. (a) Two monochromatic waves emanating from two coherent sources have the displacements
represented by

13. A point object O is kept at a distance of 30 cm from a convex lens of power +4 D towards
its left. It is observed that when a convex mirror is kept on the right side at a distance of 50
cm from the convex lens, the image of the object O formed by lens mirror combination
coincides with the object itself. Calculate the focal length of the convex mirror.
14. (a) State the underlying principle of a transformer and obtain the expression for the ratio of
secondary to primary voltage in terms of the
(i) number of secondary and primary windings and
(ii) primary and secondary currents.
(b) Write the main assumption involved in deriving the above relations.
(c) Write any two reasons due to which energy losses may occur in actual transformers.

15. Draw a labelled ray diagram showing the image formation of a distant object by a refracting
telescope. Deduce the expression for its magnifying power when the final image is formed at
infinity.
(b) The sum of focal lengths of the two lenses of a refracting telescope is 105 cm. The focal
length of one lens is 20 times that of the other. Determine the total magnification of the
telescope when the final image is formed at infinity.
16. Find the value of the phase lag/lead between the current and voltage in the given series LCR
circuit. Without making any other change, find the value of the additional capacitor, such that
when suitably joined to the capacitor (C = 2 F) as shown, would make the power factor of
this circuit unity.

17. (a) A capacitor is connected in series to an ammeter across a d.c. source. Why does the
ammeter show a momentary deflection during the charging of the capacitor? What would be
the deflection when it is fully charged?
(b) How is the generalized form of Amperes circuital law obtained to include the term due to
displacement current?
18. Shivani was interested to give her mother a microwave oven so that her finds some respite
from tough household activities. She requested her father and convinced him for a
microwave oven.
(a) What values do you find in Shivani?
(b) State briefly how a microwave oven works.
19. (a)A point object is placed in front of a double convex lens (of refractive index n = n2/n1 with
respect to air) with its spherical faces of radii of curvature R1 and R2. Show the path of rays
due to refraction at first and subsequently at the second surface to obtain the formation of the
real image of the object. Hence obtain the lens-makers formula for a thin lens.
(b) A double convex lens having both faces of the same radius of curvature has refractive
index 1.55. Find out the radius of curvature of the lens required to get the focal length of 20
cm.
OR
(a) Draw a graph showing the variation of the resultant intensity in the
(i) Youngs double slit interference pattern and
(ii) Single slit diffraction pattern against position ' x ' on the screen.
Deduce the expression for its magnifying power when the final image is formed at infinity.

(b) Compare and contrast the pattern which is seen with two coherently illuminated narrow
slits in Youngs experiment with that seen for a coherently illuminated single slit producing
diffraction.
(c) The sum of focal lengths of the two lenses of a refracting telescope is 105 cm. The focal
length of one lens is 20 times that of the other. Determine the total magnification of the
telescope when the final image is formed at infinity.
20. A metallic rod of length l and resistance R is rotated with a frequency ' v ' ,with one end
hinged at the centre and the other end at the circumference of a circular metallic ring of
radius l , about an axis passing through the centre and perpendicular to the plane of the
ring. A constant and uniform magnetic field B parallel to the axis is present everywhere.
(a) Derive the expression for the induced emf and the current in the rod.
(b) Due to the presence of the current in the rod and of the magnetic field, find the expression
for the magnitude and direction of the force acting on this rod.
(c) Hence obtain the expression for the power required to rotate the rod.
OR
State the law which relates to generation induced emf in a conductor being moved in a
magnetic field.
Apply this law to obtain an expression for the induced emf when one rod of a rectangular
conductor is free to move in a uniform, time-independent and normal magnetic field.
Apply the concept of the Lorentz (magnetic) force acting a moving charge to justify the
expression obtained above.
An a.c. voltage V =V m sin t is applied across an inductor of inductance L.
Apply Kirchoffs loop rule obtain expression for
(i) the current flowing in the circuit
(ii) the inductive reactance L
Hence find the instantaneous power Pi supplied to the inductor.
Show graphically the variation of Pi with t .
