1. In nitrating process the waste acid that is obtained is concentrated by adding
concentrated sulfuric and nitric acids to obtain the desired mixture needed for
further applications. For the following situations calculate the weights of the waste
acid and concentrated acids that must be combined to obtain 1000 kg of the desired
mixture. The concentrated sulfuric acid contains 93% H2 SO4 and the concentrated
nitric acid contains 90% HNO3 .
(a) The waste acid contains 21% HNO3 , 55% H2 SO4 and 24% H2 O by weight.
The desired mixture should contain 28% HNO3 and 62% H2 SO4 .
(b) The waste acid contains 23% HNO3 , 57% H2 SO4 and 20% H2 O. The desired
mixture should contain 27% HNO3 and 60% H2 SO4 .
[8+8]
2. In the operation of a synthetic ammonia plant, a 1 : 3 nitrogen - hydrogen mixture
is fed to the converter resulting in a 25% conversion to ammonia. The ammonia
formed is separated by condensation, and the unconverted gases are recycled to the
reactor. The initial nitrogen - hydrogen mixture contains 0.2 part of argon to 100
parts of nitrogen - hydrogen mixture. The toleration limit of argon entering the
reactor is assumed to be 5 parts to 100 parts of nitrogen and hydrogen by volume.
Estimate the fraction of recycle that must be continually purged.

3. (a) What is the relative humidity of 28 m3 of wet air at 27 0 C that is found to
contain 0.636 Kg of water vapor.
(b) Air at 80 0 F and 1 atms has dew point of 40 0 F. What is the relative humidity of this air? Antoine equation for water vapour pressure is given by
where p in kpa & T in k

4. Estimate the vapor pressure of Ethyl Acetate at 40 0 C given: the melting point
is -119.8 0 C at which temperature the vapor pressure is 0.0027 mm Hg, and the
normal boiling point is at 34.6 0 C.

6. (a) Write Kopps rule. How this rule is useful in energy balance calculations.
(b) The heat capacity of SO2 is given by
Cp = a + bT1 + CT2 .
Obtain an expression for mean heat capacity for sulfur dioxide.

[6+10]

7. Consider the following reaction:

CO(g) + 1/2 O2 (g) CO2 (g)
Find the heat of reaction at 10000 C.
Standard heats of formation of CO(g) and CO2 (g) are given as 26.4157 and
94.0518 kcal/mol respectively.
CP for O2 (g) = 6.117 + 3.167 103 T 1.005 106 T2
CP for CO2 (g) = 6.339 + 10.01 103 T 3.415 106 T2
CP for CO(g) = 6.350 + 1.811 103 T 0.2675 106 T2
Here Cp is in cal/mol.K and T is in kelvin.
