3.1 INTRODUCTION
Extension and retraction system of landing gear is one of the most important
systems in modern, wide bodied aircraft. This week highlights the principal features
of this system
Jacks: These are: L/G actuating cylinders, Door Cylinders, Unlocking Cylinders
3.3.2 General sequence: System operates in such a way that all the undercarriages
(main and auxiliary) as well as doors are operated in the proper sequence. During
extension of the landing gear on approach, following sequence will be followed: (See
Figure 3.1)

Hydraulic fluid is directed to the door uplock cylinder and Extension/retraction
cylinder Door
d)
Door extends and gear sequence valve is operated mechanically by the door

Doors are opened first and closed last during both extension and retraction cycle.
Hydraulic cylinders are normally double acting and if retraction side is pressurized,
the other side is connected to the return line and the vice versa.
Pneumatic cylinders are normally single acting without any return system so that in
one cycle, pneumatic energy comes to one side of the actuator and the other side is
connected to atmosphere .In the next cycle, pneumatic energy comes to the
opposite side of the actuator and the remaining side is connected to the atmosphere.

3.5.2 Wing landing gear operating sequence: A typical wing landing gear
operating sequence is illustrated in figure 3.4. The wing landing gear retracts
or extends when hydraulic pressure is applied to the up or down side of the
gear actuator. The gear actuator applies the force required to raise and lower
the gear. The actuator works in conjunction with a walking beam to apply
force to the wing gear shock strut, swinging it inboard and forward into the
wheel well. Both the actuator and the walking beam are connected to lugs on
the landing gear trunnion. The outboard ends of the actuator and walking
beam pivot on a beam hanger which is attached to the aircraft structure. A

wing landing gear locking mechanism located on the outboard side of the
wheel well locks the gear in the "up" position. Locking of the gear in the
"down" position is accomplished by a dowulock bungee which positions an
upper and lower jury strut so that the upper and lower side struts will not
fold.

attached to them to readily indicate whether or not they are installed.
