What is Birth Control?

It is a term used for different techniques and methods to prevent


fertilization or to interrupt pregnancy.
Contraceptives are barrier methods such as, injection, morning after
pills, condoms, the pills, male sterilization, female sterilization, implant,
contraceptive sponge etc.
It must be noted however that maturity is key to the use of birth
control, therefore kids should not indulge. The use is strictly for
mature adults and married couples.

The importance of Birth Control

The importance of birth control is that it gives you the opportunity to


plan property for your family. It helps you to decide when you are
ready and able to afford and to provide properly for your children. It is
not smart to have unwanted children as they can suffer consequences
even though they had nothing to do with them being here.
It must be pointed out that even though these are preventative
measures; none of these are one hundred percent (100%) guaranteed
as accidents can occurr.

Injection

Injection is administered monthly, every

28-30 days and is effective for up to 33 days.


If not
taken within the specified time the risk of
becoming
pregnant is highly likely.

Morning After Pills

This is sometimes referred to as the


emergency contraceptive. This pill is usually
taken within seventy two (72) hours after
sexual intercourse and may prevent
pregnancy.

Condom

This is commonly used to reduce the


possibility of pregnancy. It is put on the mans
penis to block semen from entering the body
of his female partner. This method of
contraceptive is not one hundred percent safe and
if the condom
breaks during the act you can
become pregnant and also run the risk of getting
infected with STDs.

The Pills

These are tablets containing hormones


that are similar to the ones made by a woman's
ovaries. The pills
work by preventing the ovary
from manufacturing an egg and releases it at
ovulation. While the pills can
prevent
pregnancy, it does not provide against STDs,
including HIV.

Female Sterilization Another name for this is Tubal Ligation. This is


a
surgical procedure that
permanently blocks the
fallopian tubes to prevent the
sperm and egg from
uniting.

Male Sterilization
This is also called Vasectomy. This is a
permanent method which is done by way of surgery
to prevent the passing of sperm.

Implant

This is also called norplant. This is six


matchstick size rods containing female hormones
which are inserted
by way of surgery under the
skin.

Contraceptive Sponge
This is a round sponge that has been
soaked with
spermicide (chemicals which will
kill sperm). This sponge is inserted into the vagina
before sex. It
covers the opening of the cervix
with spermicide that
kills the sperm.
