HEAL

By Kate Taylor
Being face-to-face with a 17 hand
high, over 1000 kilogram Clydesdale
cross named Humphrey does not
sound therapeutic.
But watching as the gentle giant
stands before a seven year old boy,
mirroring his fast, anxious breathing
until both fall into a pattern of slow,
deep breathing the benefits of this
new equine learning program are
heart-warming.
And a little expensive.

But for businesses looking for a

program to sponsor, or philanthropists
after a worthy cause to donate to - the
cost is worth it.
Disadvantaged
children,
aged
between seven and 17 years old,
are the target of the program; they
often have nothing, except trouble
in their families and at school, many
have suffered psychological trauma
and most come from cash-strapped
backgrounds.
But working with horses, learning

Held in Harcourt on May 17, the young Ballan local celebrated not
only a great win but also her 11th birthday.

Shannon said she had been competing in track cycling for three
years, however due to a lack of winter events decided to have a go
on the roads instead.
It is exciting to be the road champion, she said.

Moorabool Crime Investigation Unit detectives are

investigating the circumstances of an alleged road
rage incident that left a man
with a gunshot wound in
Bacchus Marsh yesterday.
Police were notified after
two men presented at a hospital in Ballan just after 5pm.
One man had suffered a
gunshot wound to his leg
while the other man suffered
a laceration to his face.
They have both been transferred to the Royal Melbourne Hospital for further
treatment.
Investigators have been told
the incident occurred on the
Western Freeway near Condons Lane about 4pm.
It is alleged the victims got
into an altercation with the
driver of a silver 2002 Holden Commodore when they
received their injuries.
Detectives are keen to speak
to the driver of the Berlina
who is described as 40 to
45-years-old, Southern European in appearance, 183cm
tall with a solid build and
dark grey hair.
Anyone who may have

Bunnings, where lowest prices

have not been marketed, yet
The construction of a Bunnings Warehouse in Bacchus
Marsh is not a done deal, according to Moorabool Shire
Council CEO Rob Croxford.
The issue of the development was raised by former
councillor Russ Hendry at
the May council meeting.
In April 2014, Bunnings applied to amend the Moorabool Planning Scheme to
rezone a 4.4Ha parcel of land
on Gisborne Road from residential to commercial and to
build a 9532sqm store with
229 car spaces on the currently vacant site.

The permit application also

includes foundations for a
227sqm bulky goods store
along with four additional
bulky goods stores with a
combined floor area of 350
sqm.
Access to the stores would
be from Clifton Drive, with
the proposal including the
construction of a roundabout on Gisborne Road to
allow traffic to flow into
Clifton Drive.
Mr Hendry asked council
to see information it provided to a state government
planning department in re-

sponse to six questions that

the department had in relation to the proposal.

The deadline for the response was the end of March

and my query was, what
did they say? Mr Hendry
asked.
However Mr Croxford explained that it was the proponent, Bunnings, that was
required to provide the information, not council.

The regional planning

body has to be satisfied with
those six questions to justify council going to the next
step.

He explained that there will

be a long process including
having councillors vote to
adopt, amend or abandon
the proposal, as well as having it put before a planning
panel.
Its not a done deal - we
have to go through a process
set out under the planning
act.
Weve got six or seven
huge amendments in front
of us at the moment. We will
eventually get it sorted, and
hopefully it will be sorted in
the next couple of months.

The Neighbours Place is
seeking help to continue
its work in helping the disadvantaged in the Bacchus
Marsh community.
The organisation put in a
submission to Moorabool
Shire Councils draft budget
asking for a 25 per cent increase in funding up from
$6590 to $8200 for the 2015-16
financial year.
The Neighbours Place Coordinator Jackie Tabone
explained that the service
needs the funding to cover
the increase in demand that
it has experienced.
Weve had a 12 per cent
increase in numbers since
January this year, Ms Tabone said.

Every year the numbers

seem to go up.
The Neighbours Place has
provided help to more than
280 adults as well as 280
children and eight homeless people, since January.
Not only do people need
canned foods but fresh meat
and goods along with frozen

5kg bag Brushed Potatoes

$1.99 each

Serves 4

Roasted, boiled, mashed, chipped, scalloped,

soups, casseroles, pies and quiches!

INGREDIENTS
500g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
25g butter
100ml milk
50g Cheddar cheese, grated
15g Parmesan, grated
1 leek, thinly sliced
1 large or 2 small shallots, finely chopped
300ml chicken stock
100ml double cream
300g shredded, cooked chicken
75g fresh green peas
1 tbsp chopped parsley
1 tbsp lemon juice
Salt and Pepper
Recipe from: www.annabelkarmel.com

METHOD
1. Pre-heat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/400F
2. Put the potatoes in cold salted water, bring to the
boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 to 15
minutes until tender. Drain and mash with butter,
milk and the grated cheeses.
3. Melt the butter in a saucepan and cook the leek
and shallot gently for 8 to 10 minutes until soft but
not coloured. Stir in the our and cook for one minute, then stir in the stock a little at a time, to make
a smooth sauce (you may find it easier to do this
off the heat).
4. Stir in the cream, then cook, stirring until the sauce
just comes to the boil. Stir in the chicken, peas and
parsley, then remove from the heat and stir in the
lemon juice and season to taste. Spoon into a one
and a half litre dish and top with mash. Bake in the
oven for about 20 minutes and then finish off for a
few minutes under the grill until golden brown. Its
a good idea to place the dish on a baking sheet to
catch any drips.

Small Business Tips

2015 Year-end
Tax Planning
There are a broad range of items you
should consider before the end of the
financial year. It pays to spend the time now
to either save some tax, or delay paying tax
for the 2015 year. Here are a few pre 30 June
Tax Planning tips:
Defer Invoicing If your cash flow can
allow it, consider deferring your invoicing
until after 30 June. A one week delay in
billing will mean you pay tax on the income
a whole year later. Also consider that a few
days delay in billing may mean that you get
paid a whole month later.
Employees & Personal Superannuation
if you choose to contribute to super and cash
flow allows it, you can claim a deduction
for personal superannuation contributions
(either via your business entity or if via your
personal name as long as your wages income
is less than 10% of your total income). A
key point to remember is that the super
contribution must be received by the super
fund before by 30 June. This can also occur
for Employees.
Super Contribution caps the 2015 super
tax deductible contribution cap is $30,000 for
people 49 and under, and $35,000 for people
50 and over. If paying a super lump sum
before 30 June, dont forget any wages super
guarantee that may have already been paid
on your behalf by any employers.

Prepay Expenses - If your cash flow can

allow it, you may want to pay for expenses
before 30 June, which may not be due until the
next year. I.e. memberships subscriptions,
rent, interest (but not the loan reduction),
lease payments, business travel, etc.
Incur expenses before 30 June if you have
incurred an expense before 30 June, but
not yet paid, as long as you receive an invoice
dated before 30 June, than this expense can
be claimed as a creditor expense in the 2015
year.
Repairs & Maintenance are any repairs
or maintenance due on equipment, cars
or buildings? Why not get it done pre-June
rather than just after, so incurring the cost
via payment or invoice will allow you the tax
deduction by a whole year earlier.
Assets up to $20,000 for small business
entities the new $20,000 Budget tax
deduction proposal may be of benefit to you
if you need to buy a new or second hand
asset for under $20,000. Please note that this
benefit has only been proposed, and even
though its been supported by the opposition
to start from budget night, is not yet law.

Horses help to heal

A trial of the program held
last year was so successful that an eight-week, two
days a week, program was
booked in for the second
school term of this year.
As Ms Gaylard explains, its
all about the children learning more about themselves
through their experiences
with the horses.
The horse will often mirror
the reaction of the kids if
the kid takes a deep breath,
then the horse takes a deep
breath, or yawns.
And they learn about personal space they learn to
read the correlation of the
horses and body language
with people; if they pull the
horses ear then because the
reaction of the horse is so
big, they see they dont like
that, and then they can apply that to people too.
They also learn skills to
bring their energy back
down to approach a horse
because if youre energy is
up, the horse will run away,
so you learn to bring your
energy down and then reapproach the horse. Then
they apply that in their daily
life, if they are getting too
physical or having a tantrum, they then remember
to bring their energy back
down.
You can never predict

what happens but weve had

some amazing experiences
one child was highly anxious, and they walked into
our herd and the only female
horse - the mare - would not
allow any of the other horses
to come near the child, it
gave the child the space to
work through it, and then for
that child to refer that experience back to their own life.

Or we might give them a

task to do with the horses,
to problem-solve, and its
not about the task, its about
the process of coming to a
solution or not coming to
a solution. They talk about
how they wanted to give up
on the task, but they showed
persistence - and then we ask
them about when theyre at
school, can they show more

patience and persistence to

achieve things, like they did
with the horses? And they
say they can use it in maths,
maybe I can do my deep
breathing in maths? I made
sure I was breathing deeply
and I made sure I slowed it
down, that I didnt give up.
Ms Gaylard said that it is
amazing to watch it play out.
Were so passionate and

HALLETTS WAY
a vital asset
The tender process for works
to construct the southern extension to Halletts Way will
begin in Spring, if councils
draft budget is adopted this
month.
Design work is 80 per cent
complete, and the money in
the draft budget would be
added to funds from developer contributions, a $2.18
million Federal Government
grant and money already secured from a State Government grant; a total project
spend of $4.5 million in 201516, with further funds to be
allocated in 2016-17.
The road and bridge design is 80 per cent complete,
is progressing as scheduled
and it is on track to be completed by the end of this financial year, Infrastructure

general manager Phil Jeffrey

said.
If the funding in the draft
Council Budget is approved
at the special meeting of
council in June, we would be
looking to tender the project
in the Spring months, with
construction to start at the
beginning of 2016.
Once completed, the southern extension of Halletts
Way will help ease congestion for Bacchus Marsh motorists and ultimately create
a western link road in Bacchus Marsh from Griffith
Street to Links Road.
We have an alignment for
this important piece of infrastructure in place now and
have produced drawings
and artists impressions to
help visualise the completed
project, Mr Jeffrey said.
During the design stage,

Council has worked through

myriad issues including
steep terrain, large earthworks volumes, flora and
fauna studies, bridge alignment and length, flood impact assessments, heritage
studies, irrigation channel
crossings, and requirements
from other authorities including Melbourne Water
and Southern Rural Water.
All this technical work
was necessary to get the
project to the stage it is at
now. We are now looking
forward to receiving funding to take it to the next stage
construction.
This is one of the biggest infrastructure projects
undertaken by Moorabool
Shire Council, and once
completed, will be a vital
asset to Bacchus Marsh, Mr
Jeffrey said.

A remaining pool of money

to assist new tourism event
development is available to
local tourism event organisers, but the applications are
closing soon.
Moorabool Shire Councils
New Tourism Events Grant
Program was approved
by council last year and is
designed to support event
organisers to plan and run
new tourism events with
potential to significantly
increasing visitation into
Moorabool Shire from out-

side the region.

Cr Tatchell said its not
only brand new event concepts that can apply for the
funding.
If youve recently developed a new tourism event
concept and have only run
the event on a small scale for
one or two years previously,
you can still apply under the
new tourism event guidelines, if you can prove its got
the pulling power to attract
more people from outside

the region.
Successful applicants to this
grant program will receive
funding support for three
consecutive years from the
remaining pool of $8,900pa.
Prospective applicants will
need to be quick however,
as the window for applications closes at 5pm on 12
June. Visit www.moorabool.
vic.gov.au to download the
guidelines and an application form. Or contact Council on 5366 7100.

The tussle of
the tussock

By Jessica Howard
Mt Egerton residents have a crucial role to
play in helping to prevent the spread of a
nuisance weed.
The serrated tussock is a highly invasive
plant and if left untreated, can have
significant impacts on agriculture, native
grasslands and urban environments.
Since April, the Victorian Serrated Tussock
Working Party (VSTWP) has targeted
landholders in the Mt Egerton, Bungal and
Mt Doran area in order to raise awareness
and offer technical advice on serrated
tussock control.
VSTWP Extension Officer, Roger MacRaild
will conduct free property visits to local
landholders and managers, with property
maps noting any serrated tussock
infestations in the area. The program will
also offer information packages detailing
identification of the weed and management
options.
Mr MacRaild said while the plant may look
fairly innocuous, without intervention the
plant is capable of spreading quickly across
the landscape.
This region is prime land for serrated
tussock and the earlier the landowners are
equipped with the knowledge and skills to

manage this plant the better, he said.

The
Commonwealth
Scientific
and
Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)
modelling suggests that most of the state
of Victoria is suitable for infestations, and
whilst it may not have reached this potential,
all the weed needs is an opportunity.
For the Mt Egerton to Mt Doran part of the
world, prevention and containment works
are a necessary investment, Mr MacRaild
said.
There are local pockets of infestations right
through to Lal Lal, but not much further.
Management of these infestations will
not only minimise the impact on the local
landscape and community, but also help
prevent serrated tussock from reaching its
potential extent and impact across the rest of
the state.
Serrated tussock can be up to 90cm long
and once the seed is ripe, the flowering stem
will weep over the entire plant to touch the
ground.
The seed head is purple soon after flowering,
and then turns golden brown once matured.
To find out more about the program, or
to receive a free land visit, contact Roger
MacRaild on 0459622588 or visit www.

Truth key to inquiry

By Kate Taylor
Members of a parliamentary inquiry into chemical contamination at the
Fiskville Training College
will visit the site today.
The move is part of an ongoing inquiry into pollution,
contamination and unsafe
practices at the college as
well as the impact it has
had on the health of those
involved.
The inquiry will also look
at the role of management
at the college, the feasibility
of decontaminating the site,
and provide recommendations to reduce ongoing
harm and provide justice to
victims and their families.
So far, two public hearings
have been conducted which
have heard submissions by
locals affected by PFOS the

chemical alleged to have

contaminated the college,
surrounding areas and
people, causing cancer.
Member for Western Victoria Region Simon Ramsay
is a member of the Environment and Natural Resources
Committee which is conducting the inquiry but it
will not be Mr Ramsays first
trip to Fiskville, as he undertook breathing and apparatus training there himself as
a former firefighter.
He said the evidence he has
been hearing has not been
surprising, as much of it had
been raised by Brian Potter
(CFA whistle-blower and
cancer sufferer) previously.
Were hearing stories like
the Lloyd farmers from an
adjoining property who believe that their health and
stock have been affected by

past practices, and the use of

PFOS - which they dont use
anymore I might add - and
potential
contamination,
Mr Ramsay said.
I cant make comment on
any of that, only to say thats
the evidence thats been presented to us.
Local Mt Wallace farmers the Lloyd family spoke
at one hearing, saying that
PFOS had been found on
their property, in their
sheep, and that blood tests
had revealed elevated levels
of the contamination in their
blood.
Mr Ramsay did however express a number of concerns
in relation to the inquiry
itself, saying that there have
been a number of confidential submissions leaked to
media the Herald Sun in
particular and saying that
he has concerns about the
influence of the United Firefighters union.
Theres a sub-terranian
push by the UFU to take control of the CFA and the MFB
boards
What Im finding disappointing in this inquiry is
the Chair of the inquiry

receiving text messages

from the UFU, and the cosy
arrangement between the
Labor members on the committee and the UFU.
Mr Ramsay said that notwithstanding the politics,
it is important that the inquiry gets to the truth of
exactly what practices were
mismanaged at Fiskville,
and whether there is capacity to have the facility
decontaminated.
And whether those firefighters who have contracted
cancers have it linked to
the workplace theyre the
deliberations well have to
make when we finalise public hearings.
Were trying to gather as
much evidence as we can to
make sure the committee is
fully informed.
We have an important
role - to make sure we get to
the truth of what happened
there.
Public hearings are set to
recommence on Monday 15
June.
The Committee will provide an interim report in
June, with a final report due
by December this year.

Lifestyle shattered
While the Lloyd familys submission to the Fiskville
Inquiry is confidential, reports from the public hearing
tell the story of a family in a traumatic situation.
Their Field to Fridge business, selling fat prime
lamb meat to the public and which The Moorabool
News previously ran a story on, was closed after
contamination at the Fiskville site was first found.
A contamination notice was issued on their stock,
but quickly revoked and now their livestock are
sold, but not meat.
Blood tests conducted on the family also found high
levels of PFOS a chemical used at Fiskville and
linked to cancer.
Reports from the public hearing said the family had
been urged by the CFA not to seek legal advice,
but that they have now engaged law firm Slater and
Gordon.

Court in action

By Jessica Howard

A 21-year-old who punched

a complete stranger in the
head before handing himself
into the police says he felt instant remorse for his actions.
David Longden, of Bacchus
Marsh, pleaded guilty to
unlawful damage and two
charges of unlawful assault
on Friday, May 29.
The Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court was told that on
March 17 this year, Longden
was driving with two unidentified male passengers,
one of who tossed an open
water bottle at an unsuspecting victim walking down a
footpath situated on Grey
Street, Bacchus Marsh.
The prosecutor evident in
court said Longden drove
past the victim again so that
a second bottle could be
thrown, both which left the
man covered in water.
Worried for his safety, the
victim allegedly took out his
mobile phone in an attempt
to call triple-0 and take a
photograph of the vehicles
registration plates.
Realising what the victim
was doing, Longden stopped
the car before approaching
the victim and punching
him twice in the head, forcing him to drop and break
his phone, the court heard.
Longden then proceeded to
follow his friends who had
already fled the scene upon
his instructions.
Police and ambulance crews
attended the scene, however
there were fortunately no
major injuries.
Moments after the incident,
Longden returned to the
scene and handed himself in
to the police.
The 21-year-olds solicitor
stated that whilst nothing
justifies his actions, he was
egged on and he instantly
regretted his decision.
Upon leaving the scene he
asked his friends what the
water was about and they
said they had gone to school
with [the victim]. He instantly regretted his decision so
went back, he said.
After the second occasion
the victim actually threw

milk into the car, so my client was aggravated and after

seeing [the victim] with his
phone out he instantly panicked and just wanted him to
turn his phone off.
He has fallen victim to

back to the scene.
Magistrate Cynthia Toose

community did not tolerate

He received a $1000 fine and
was asked to pay $663 in restitution for the broken phone

A repeat offender will be
off the roads for a period
of 24-months after driving
without a license for the
third time.
Michael Lees, of Bacchus
Marsh, was intercepted by
police on September 12, 2014
after he was observed driv-

ing a 1988 Toyota Corolla

with incorrect registration
plates.
A license check soon revealed Lees had never held
a license, and had already
been convicted of two unlicensed driving charges in
2011.
Upon accompanying the
police to the Bacchus Marsh
station, he made full omissions stating that he knew
he wasnt allowed to drive
but was trying to get to
work.
Lees solicitor stated that
the accused had repeatedly
failed his learners permit
test and at the time had no
access to public transport in
order to get to work.
He didnt try to hide the
fact that he had driven to
work and has since moved
to Bacchus Marsh to be
closer to the place where he
has been employed for five
years, he said.
Magistrate Toose said that
whilst she understood the
hardship country residents
faced in getting to work, it
was still their responsibility to obey the law. Lees received a $1,200 fine and was
disqualified from driving
for a period of 24-months.

Trade discount

By Jessica Howard

Thousands of trade apprentices who rely on
their car for work may be eligible for half price
registration fees.
At the 2014 November state election the Labor
Government promised an $8.8 million discount
registration scheme, in which eligible apprentice
tradies can apply for a 50 percent discount on both
their registration fee and transport accident charge.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Luke
Donnellan said the costs of car registrations meant
some trade apprentices had to forgo tools and
training.
Bricklayers, carpenters, joiners, electricians,
plumbers they build our homes, they rely on the
road, and the state government is giving them the
support they need, he said.
Based on the 2014-2015 registration fees, Labor
said the plan would provide a $378 discount each
year to around 15,000 apprentices paying standard
registration on a light vehicle.
The trades people will be among those eligible for
a discount if their employers can demonstrate that
the use of the vehicle is an essential part of their
work.
The Labor Government is working with VicRoads
to determine eligibility requirements; however
there will be no obligation to submit logbooks or
odometer readings.

Dear Editor,
It is very disturbing to read
in the United Firefighters
Union submission to the
Parliamentary Inquiry into
Fiskville that the UFU is
imposing its muscle power
to take over the boards of
the MFB and CFA as well
as seeking criminal or civil
charges against management of Victorias regulators
Worksafe and EPA over the
Fiskville contamination.
The UFU actively used
its membership against
the Napthine Government
and the CFA during the
last election campaign. It
resorted to using its unionists to harass rival political
party members, door knock
households wearing CFA
uniforms and wore lookalike MFB uniforms at polling booths to garner sympathy votes.Naturally, its
now time for payback, and
the Andrews Government
has buckled to the UFUs
demands to close Fiskville
despite a current investigation, in order to have
all training undertaken in
Craigieburn where it can be
owned by the Union.
The UFU is also using the
Inquiry as an avenue to get
rid of volunteers from CFA
and MFB boards and replace

them with United Firefighter

members. This will then
give the UFU majority control on the boards. The union
is demanding changes to the
Metropolitan Fire Brigades
Act 1958 so that a majority of
board members are United
Firefighter Union members. Interestingly, nothing
mentioned about firefighter
safety.
Secretary of the UFU Peter Marshall, author of the
submission, lays blame only
on those who managed
Fiskville between 2011 and
its recent closure, despite
much of the poor practice
and lack of adequate governance occurring in the 1980s
and 1990s. This inconvenient truth doesnt suit the political game Peter Marshall
is playing. Whilst there is a
spat with the Andrews Government over disciplinary
measures against a union
official who misused his position, the main game for the
UFU is to use Fiskville as a
means to unionise the CFA
and take over the MFB and
CFA boards.
My plea to Victorias 60,000
dedicated CFA volunteers is
to stand firm against a UFU
takeover. I will be visiting
fire brigades across Western
Victoria from the Surf Coast

Shire to the municipalities

of Horsham, Melton, Ballarat and Geelong, and Ill be
armed with a petition calling
for Hands off our CFA. I encourage all CFA volunteers
to support their organisation
and protect its independent
strength to keep it free from
union control.

Dear Editor,
On 20th May 2015, Moorabool Council granted a permit for a sixth service station
in Bacchus Marsh to be built
on the corner of Gell and
Bennett Streets. Entry to the
24/7 Coles Express Service
Station will be via Bennett Street and exit via Gell
Street, opposite Foodworks
delivery area.
Only 7 residents/businesses within 30 metres from
the site were notified of the
proposed development. Signage was placed on the site
facing Bennett Street from
24th February to 11th March,
however due to works on the
site and restricted pedestrian access due to the closure
of the pedestrian walkway

Eligible Moorabool residents can

say goodbye to bare powerlines.
Stage six of the Powerline Bushfire Safety Program has begun,
which will see all known Private
Overhead Electric Line (POEL)
owners receive an invitation to
apply for government funding.
If approved, the funding will
allow for registered contractors
to remove overhead powerlines
from private properties.
The Victorian Government announced the $750 million program in 2011, which aims to reduce the risk of bushfires caused
by electrical assets.
Epping Electrical is one of many
registered suppliers with the
Powerline Replacement Fund,
and is now available within areas
of Moorabool to prepare POEL
quotations for owners.
Epping Electrical director, Geoff
Connor said the program would
increase the safety of properties
and prevent surrounding residents from bushfires.
The Royal Bushfire Commission has set aside a lot of money
to remove a lot of potential risks

from unregulated powerlines,

he said.
Those eligible for funding must
have uninsulated overhead powerlines on their property, which
means they are completely exposed and must be energised.
The property must also be in a
declared bush fire zone.
Mr Connor said all known POEL
owners would have received a
letter from April 7, however some
may have slipped through the
cracks.
Every year the integrity of these
poles are checked, and if their
conditions arent up to scratch
they are recorded on the annual
audit, and it is on these records
that letters are sent out so that
the property owner can apply for
government funding, he said.
However it has happened in
other parts of Victoria before,
where properties have slipped
through the cracks. So if people
believe they are eligible they
are welcome to contact us or the
Powerline Replacement Fund.

As traffic congestion is currently a major problem and

Although the land is zoned

is totally unsuitable due to

Sporting club builds a community

Books,
bits and

By Jessica Howard

TOM

After a drought of club

cricket that spanned more
than a decade, the newly revived Elaine Cricket Club is
back and better than ever.
When junior cricket coordinator, Shane Dunnes
children said they wanted to
play cricket in 2001, the decision was made to end the
clubs 12-year recess.
With no local clubs in the
area, Mr Dunne approached
Cricket Victoria, and alongside Cricket Victoria Regional Manager for Central
Highlands, Campbell Waring, held sessions in nearby
schools to promote the Milo
in2Cricket program.
Following interest from 33
participants, Elaine CC proceeded to host the event for
the first time in history.
Elaine Cricket Club president, Murray Arnel said
the Milo in2Cricket event
sparked the next three very
successful years.
The inspiration from those
little kids running around
created a great level of enthusiasm and suddenly
people were interested in
playing twos, and the older
children came to the club
and asked if we would consider reforming again, he
said.
So we put a team in the local Ballarat competition, and
soon enough we received
interest from senior players.

The Elaine U13 premiership team 2014/15 that had nine members who started with the milo
cricket at Elaine and then went on to play in this premiership. Photo - submitted
Following renewed interest, the Elaine Cricket Club
entered a senior and junior
team in the Ballarat Cricket
Association for the 2012-2013
season, which according
to Mr Arnel proved to be a
great success.
The seniors may have lost
their first four games, but
they came back and won the
Division five premiership,
he said.
The following year they
went back-to-back and won
a second premiership, and
we also went on to win a
junior premiership in the
2014-15 season.
In our first few years as a
renewed club thats pretty
impressive.
Mr Arnel said with three
prosperous years behind
them, he looked forward to

the next season of cricket.

At the moment it looks like
we could have three junior
teams, which shows that in
three years time we have
grown from a Milo Cricket
non-participating club to
three premierships and
potentially four teams, he
said.
Cricket Victoria General
Manager of Game Development, Rohan ONeil said it
was wonderful to see the
restoration of a rural club.
Evidence shows how valuable clubs are to the overall
community, be it sports
clubs or any sort of organisation, however certainly in
this case cricket brings a lot
of value to the wider community, both physically and
socially, he said.
There are trends where

the population of rural communities change and people

move away, so when a town
is able to revitalise cricket it
is just wonderful, there really have been some great
outcomes and Elaine is a
perfect example of this.
Mr ONeil commended the
Elaine Cricket Club for their
achievements, noting the
importance of volunteers in
the community.
Back in our 2012 Breakfast
Volunteer Awards, Murray
Arnell received a recognition award and I think his
volunteer involvement has
been the most crucial part to
play in revitalising the club.
Along side people like Shane
Dunne, they have been instrumental in driving this
club to success.

them this year, she said.

dont think has been made

I have information on
what is supposedly the first

she said.

Its called the Tale of

Lock your gate

There is a YouTube of the
recently retired TV personality David Letterman expressing his anger at what
the coal seam gas industry
is doing to the United States.
If you have the time it is
worth a look. I am aware
that in last weeks piece I did
spend some time on fracking
and the film I recently saw
Frackman, an Australian
feature-length documentary
film which follows the exploits of former construction
worker turned anti-fracking
activist Dyane Pratik as he
responds to the expansion of
the coal seam gas industry
near Tara, Queensland. By
the way this film came to
Burnie because enough of
us locals signed up to enable
both it and David Pratik to
come to Burnie. How about
the same thing happening in
the Moorabool Shire?

Again this week I would like

to spend some time on this
fracking practice because,
it seems to me, it typifies
clearly what is happening in
our democracy. Things are
done with little or no local
discussion and locals do not
want it yet our federal and
state governments support
these businesses against
their own people
There were two main firms
involved in the fracking in
the documentary and it was
interesting to note that one
of them was Halliburton.
Now that name might not
mean much to you but it annoys the hell out of me. You
see Halliburtons former director was former US Vice
President, under George W
Bush, Dick Cheney who was
behind the disastrous invasion of Iraq. Halliburton, it
seems, was given $39.5 bil-

lion in Iraq-related contracts

over the past decade, with
many of the deals given
without any bidding from
competing firms, such as a
$568-million contract renewal in 2010 to provide housing, meals, water and bathroom services to soldiers,
a deal that led to a Justice
Department lawsuit over alleged kickbacks, as reported
by Bloomberg.
And now that company is
fracking all over Queensland and New South Wales
and wants to come to other
states.
Joe Hill is a 70-something
farmer from a little place
called Columboola west of
the Darling Downs town of
Chinchilla. He runs a beautiful Angus cattle breeding
property and has always opposed attempts by coal seam
gas companies to come onto

his property to explore for

gas, produce it or put pipelines across it. In fact, Joe
has very staunchly locked
his gate and tells anyone
from the companies who
are silly enough to try to
enter his property to push
off. Joes main concern has
always been that water from
CSG operations might cause
contamination in the beef he
produces. One can only imagine his horror, then, when
a recent heavy downpour
caused an overflow from a
holding pond on a neighbours property to push
polluted CSG water to flood
across his property, filling
the melon holes on his rich,
black, brigalow soil and his
dam.
What has happened to Joe is
merely one of an increasing
number of serious incidents
occurring across the western

Darling Downs wherever

CSG companies are active. In
nearby Hopeland, 10 kilometres south of Chinchilla, officers from the Queensland
department of Environment
and Heritage Protection recently found high levels of
carbon monoxide, hydrogen
sulphide and hydrogen in
the rich, alluvial soils and
immediately set up a 15 kilometre radius exclusion zone
where farmers were strongly
advised to refrain from any
excavation.
Other landholders in the
area will also tell heartrending stories of their children suffering nose bleeds,
headaches and other serious
health problems caused,
they believe, by nearby gas
operations. Sometimes these
people have, years ago, naively allowed the companies
access to their land and now

find themselves unable to

control what occurs on their
property. Sometimes they
have refused entry but the
operations are occurring
close enough to their homes
and their farms to impact
their health. Those who have
drawn their water from the
coal measures are now losing it and are having trouble negotiating satisfactory
make good agreements
with the gas companies.
Many areas have now set
up gasfield-free communities which provide the social
base for concerted community action if the companies
try to move in. It can be done.
What is your opinion?

go-ahead for an important project arrives at the eleventh

You could find this an unexpectedly tranquil week, yet
many behind the scenes happenings are taking place on
your behalf. Family ties strengthen now, with support
coming from older relatives.

prove worthwhile to improve your writing or public

SAGITTARIUSNovember 22-December 22
This is a creatively sharp week with the accent on new
projects. Promotion may be delayed, but guests show up
ahead of schedule. A loved one is more honest in expressing his or her feelings.
CAPRICORNDecember 23-January 20
Back to basics is the theme of the week. Go after the
facts and make simplicity your key. A show of inner
strength wins you the heart of an attractive new friend.
AQUARIUSJanuary 21-February 19
Your partner is down to earth and reliable and up-in-theair plans are settled now, for the most part favourably. A
caution - dont be too quick to sing your own praises.
PISCESFebruary 20-March 20
Career or academic matters demand attention, but you
make strides in areas of family and friendship. Your sense
of security deepens. The weekend accents the quiet side
of romance.
BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK
Enthusiasm is your middle name. Your style is a dramatic
one and the limelight is what you often crave. The next
three months could find you focusing on newer tasks and
narrowing your range of interests. Starting later on, you
become increasingly involved in humanitarian causes.

Your computer uses Random Access Memory (RAM) to

hold program code and process instructions that you
give your software when computing. When you turn your
computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during
the computing session. When you restart your computer
the data from the operating system and the programs
you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM.

as either dynamic DRAM or static SDRAM.)

Open Age girls ready to tackle the uphill climb.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

Cross Country
The Centre held their weekly
cross country meet at Myrniong
Reserve last Saturday morning.
The athletes wound their way
around the reserve grounds
prior to heading out along Shuter
Street. Runners then turned into
Blackwood Street to tackle the
uphill before turning and heading
north along the gravel road.
Athletes then reached the turning
point before once again tackling

a long gruelling uphill climb

before re-entering the reserve
and winding their way back to
the finish line. Not only did the
athletes contest sharp turns and
the uphill course they also battled
the strong winds, which made for
very tough competition.
This coming long weekend the
Bacchus Marsh athletes will travel
to Benalla to participate in the
Benalla Open Day on Sunday at
Reef Hill Reserve. Bacchus Marsh
will be attempting to retain the
Benalla perpetual trophy which
they have won for the past 11
years.
Athletes can still enter the
Benalla Open Day, further

BALLAN PLUMBING

The Bacchus Marsh Womens team travelled to Manor

Lakes on Saturday afternoon
in very windy conditions.
The Cobras jumped Manor
Lakes with a goal within
minutes from the first whistle, and was looking like
they came to play for a win.
Manor Lakes responded late
in the quarter but it was the
Cobras in front at the break.
The ladies did not take advantage of the breeze in the
second quarter and only
managed to score one point.
To their credit they held
their opposition to one goal.
Going into the last quarter
it was anyones game with
only the clock beating the
Cobras, losing by just two
points at the final siren.
Final score - Manor Lakes
5-5-35 def BM 5-3-33
Goals - Madalyn Clarke 2,
Emily Scully 1, Sally Fairweather, Zhoe Clarke,
Best - Emily Scully, Cyrstal

Blues get
mauled by Tigers
Ballan Football
The Ballan Blues were under no illusions as to the task
before them. The Springbank
Tigers had a three goal lead
at the end of the first quarter
and the Blues were never
able to reel their opponents
in. The Blues had their share
of the possessions but could
not get their forwards converting. Zac Peoples battled
valiantly up forward but the
Tigers defense was relentless and rebounded all too
often. The Blues now have a
weeks rest before venturing
to Newlyn. They remain in
the top eight on percentage.
Final Score - Ballan 4 12
36 lost Springbank 9
11 65
Best - Z. Peoples, S. Hitchings, J. Wilkie, D. Ismail, L.
Herring, D. Nielsen.
The Reserves suffered their
first loss of the year and
now know what they are up
against if they in the finals.
The Tigers line up were very
quick and they had winners
on every line. Mark Dunn
battled hard all day and
Sam Sims was under constant pressure for the entire
match at full back. The Blues
forwards were not given
the clear air they had experienced in earlier matches.
With this loss the Blues slip
to fourth position on the
ladder.
Final Score - Ballan 4 4 28
lost Springbank 11 10 76
Best - S. Sims, C. Despirt, M.
Dunne, R. Watts B. Ferguson, B. Cox.

Y Sullivan Mt Xavier GC.

The Under 18s had a convincing win and were never

troubled. Campbell Sparrow
dominated in the ruck and
was in all the action for all
four quarters. Down in the
backline Jack Shaw made life
impossible for the Tigers forwards. The Tigers managed
to score in the final quarter. Hopefully the start of a
string of wins for the young
Blues.
Final Score - Ballan 11 12
78 def Springbank 1 3 9
Best - L. Whyte-Marshall, C.
Sparrow, J. Shaw, D. Trickey,
R. Wilkie, T. Meyer.
The Under 15s did not score
in the first quarter and their
opponents kicked five goals.
However the Blues got going in the second quarter,
coming home with a rush.
Connor McLeod and Jordan
Botheras fired up in the middle and ran their opponents
ragged, whilst up forward
Jack McGregor started to
mark strongly. But the clock
beat the Blues who had all
the action in the final quarter. They have learnt a hard
lesson that they need to be
switched on right from the
first bounce.
Final Score - Ballan 8 3 51
lost Springbank 8 6 54
Best - J. Botheras, C.
McLeod, C. Pascoe, L. Trickey, J. McGregor, J. Stone.
The Under 12s are playing
great football and reaping
the rewards. Gates and Pascoe scoring the goals. A special thanks to Ballan players
Talyn, Clancy, Jack and Jim
who played for Springbank
to make up the numbers.
Final - Ballan 3 9 27 def

It was a hard fought game
from start to finish with the

When Jimbo Johnson got
the better of the pacemaker
on straightening, Drunken
Maniac which had eased
three wide just prior, finished too well to gain the
day by 1.4 metres in a rate
of 2-05.7, with Fiftyshadesofbrown 8.9 metres away in
third place after following
the winner home.

By LEN BAKER

Tubbs stable
on fire!

Bacchus Marsh trainer Alan

Tubbs has been having a
great run of luck in recent
times and chalked up another winner on Monday May
25, when smart 4-Y-0 Bacardi Lindy/Hiona Mountain
gelding Drunken Maniac
chalked up his 5th success
in 20 outings by taking the
Trotters Handicap for T0 or
better class over 2150 metres
at Yarra Valley.
Driven on this occasion by
Greg Sugars, Drunken Maniac coming from 20 metres
enjoyed a charmed one/
one passage for most of the
journey trailing the well
supported Jimbo Johnson
off the same mark who tried
hard in the early stages to arrest the lead away from the
South Australian visitor Soh
Filthy Rich which proved
unsuccessful.

On what was a good day

for Melton and surrounds,
Andy and Kate Gaths tough
ex-Kiwi 6-Y-0 Bettors Delight/Regret gelding Mister
Mundaka brought up seven
wins in a row when greeting
the judge in the Pace for C5
& C6 class over 2150 metres.
Lance Justice snared the
quinella in the Pace for C2
class over 1650 metres, but
not the way punters would
have hoped as Aloha Don Ho
at Supertab odds of $33.80
defeated his more fancied
stablemate Blacks A Beauty
($4.70) in a rate of 1-57.1.
Lance Justice was in the
winners circle following
the victory of speedy Aces
N Sevens/Smooth De Babe
four year old entire Four
Smart Aces in the Pace for C3
& C4 class over 1650 metres.

Andy and Kate Gath gained

some spending money for a
trip to the Harness Jewels in
Ashburton over the weekend, when three year old
Always A Virgin/Shove Off
gelding Always Arjay led
throughout from the pole
to land the Pace for C2 class
over 2150 metres at Bendigo.
There were plenty of Melton/Bacchus Marsh area
winners at Maryborough
on Thursday including a
double to Craig Demmer
and Jodi Quinlan with Jodis
Choice (Four Starzzz Shark/
Petousa) taking the Pace for
C0 class over 1690 metres
and Glenferrie Burn (Muscle Hill/Adellas Dash) the
Trotters Oaks Trial over 2190
metres.
Others to score were Beau
Tindale & Rod Petroff in the
2-Y-0 Trotters Handicap over
2190 metres with War Dan
Destroyer (Majestic Son/
Starcus) and John McCullagh with Totally Ruthless/
Dorris Lorraine 7-Y-0 gelding Rainless in the Pacers
Handicap with Richard
Caruana in the sulky.
Steve Zammit and Rod
Petroff were also winners
with Awesome Mattjesty
(Royal Mattjesty/Awesome
Asset).

practicality and safety inherent in passenger cars.
These new age vehicles are not
only workhorses but recreational
and lifestyle vehicles that need to
be capable all-rounders.
The recently launched MQ Triton
has evolved to not only meet but
exceed these expectations. In
essence it is the Ultimate Sports
Utility Vehicle, more than capable
off-road, but just as at home onthe road as well.
With the new Triton you dont have
to compromise, put simply the New
MQ Triton is not just the best Ever
Triton it sets a new benchmark
as the best value package in the
market.
Recently the new Triton was
unveiled at the National Mitsubishi
Dealer conference in Sydney, and
Dealers, Service and Sales Staff
had the pleasure of listening to
product designers and also testing
the vehicle on a challenging offroad course as well as on-road
including driving it fully laden
as well as towing. At times the
conditions could only be described
as extreme as it was one of
Sydneys wettest weeks ever.
The response was unanimous this
was the Best Triton Ever. In fact so
impressed that the average score
from all the days when accessing the
training and the product performance
was a staggering 4.9 out of 5. This is
from industry hardened experts whom
many of which represent competitor
brands as well.
First glance reveals the Triton has
kept its unique J Line cabin. This
is much more than a designers
architectural signature it is a
clever winning combination which
optimizes cabin space whilst
minimizing turning circle. The
result is one of the largest and
roomy cabins in its class which
is ergonomically designed for
comfort and space for both front
and rear passengers even if the
driver is six foot plus. The turning
circle is also the best in class and
effortless making it simple to
manoveure on and off road as well
as park with ease.
In terms of comfort the new Triton
sets the new standard in cabin
comfort. The seats are not only

bigger and wider but are incredibly

comfortable and supportive with
increased foam density, greater
lateral support and leg support. The
driver has a new tactile, stylish and
comfortable steering wheel that has
both tilt and telescopic adjustment
and both front and rear have
increased leg and shoulder room.
Inside the cabin the level of
features and finish is high on entry
from the base GLX rising to the
GLS and then onto the premium
Exceed. Fit and finish quality is
exceptional and cruise control,
Bluetooth and other controls are
well placed and easy to operate.
The new dash layout and lighting
have also been improved.
The Triton has a significantly
quieter cabin which is a result of
numerous enhancements including
increased aerodynamics and
strategic insulation. On the move
the Tritons steering feels direct
and responsive with a best in class
turning circle assisted by a 12%
reduction in lock to lock turns from
4.3 to 3.8.
Triton is powered by a new 2.4L
all aluminum common rail direct
injection turbo diesel MIVEC
engine. Power has been increased
to 133kw which is achieved at
lower revs 3500rpm rather than
4000rpm. Impressively the Torque
is increased to 430nm for both the
5 speed automatic as well as the
6 speed manual, whilst this is an
increase of 30nm on the manual,
whilst for the auto it is up 80nm or
23%.
These performance Increases
do not come at the expense of
economy. The new engine coupled
with a new aerodynamic body
has resulted in an impressive
20% reduction in fuel economy
achieving 7.2L (ADR 81/02)
and reduced CO2 emissions.
Mitsubishis new Triton is big
where it matters but it doesnt
compromise on drivability.
Triton achieves the highest 5 star
Ancap Rating with a standard
7 airbags, Anti-Braking System
(ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce
Distribution (EBD), Active Stability
and Traction Control (ASTC), Hill
Start Assist (HSA). Triton also

features Trailer Stability Assist

(TSA) which is a safety system
employing ASTC to reduce trailer
swaying and regain control.
Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) is a
new safety feature which warns
road users of emergency braking
by rapid and automatic linking of
hazard warning lamps to reduce
rear impact collisions. Tritons also
are equipped with LED Daytime
running lamps and the GLS and
Exceed come standard with reverse
cameras.
Recent trends have seen vehicle
sizes balloon out with the
misplaced opinion big is better.

The vehicles not only are truck like

in appearance but are difficult to
maneuver in the real world. Unless
Im mistaken parking spaces are
not getting any bigger.
A similar trend has seen
manufacturers push a new
standard of 3500kg tow rate.
Smart buyers know that a number
of factors come into play when
determining combined tow
and carry weights, including
the addition of non-standard
accessories. Towing at the upper
level of capacity means there may
be precious le in reserve. In some
makes this means when towing

a maximum of 3500kg you could

have as little as 341kg le to cover
passengers, luggage and supplies.
Which means you would be
overloaded if you planned to take
5 people with an average weight
of 75kg (375kg). Imagine having
to weigh your friends and luggage
before you took them away on a
fishing trip.
Mitsubishi with the new Triton is
big where it matters and doesnt
compromise on daily driveability
and comfort for all occupants.
Mitsubishi Triton has a Gross
Combination Mass of 5885kg
combined with a Low Kerb Mass
of 1930kg. The new Triton has an
increased 3100kg (310kg down
ball) tow rate, which is more
practical and ample for most users,
at this fully laden weight you still
have 640kg to cover friends, family
and a sizeable load of gear, without
the need for scales.
The Triton comes in 2WD Diesel
Single and Dual Cab as well as
a single cab 4x4 and 3 variants
of ever popular 4x4 Dual Cabs.
Another welcome addition is
the Club Cab 4x4 which has four
clam-shell door design for ease of
access.
All vehicles are covered by a 4 year
60000km capped price service and
a 5year 100,000km warranty with
roadside assistance.
Triton unlike some competitors
only requires servicing every
15,000kms or 12 months
representing less down time.
The New Triton delivers with Better
Comfort, Power, Performance,
Economy, Cabin Space, Dynamics,
Towing and Safety whilst retaining
Tritons legendary value and
reliability.
With a planned extended run-out
of existing MN Triton with the
New MQ, Mitsubishi Triton has the
opposition covered on all fronts.
