DO YOU CARE? Carers information event at The Community Centre,

Longwater Lane, Costessey this year is on Friday 12 th. June from
9-30am until 12-30pm when all the main organisations, charities and groups who
work with Carers will be present to give informal and confidential advice . No personal
details will be asked for, they will only be recorded if you voluntarily give them. The
advisers are trained, also fully checked and doing this regularly for a living.
If you have not found time to come in the past why not resolve to pop along this time,
have a cuppa and biscuits, enjoy the friendly relaxed atmosphere but more
importantly get the help to help you. Its time to recognise that you are a Carer, it
makes sense to seek help, it is not a sign of weakness, so come and pay us a visit
please.
There is plenty of free car parking, the 23A bus stop is right outside, a stress free
journey with none of the hassle of driving into the city and paying a fortune to park.
You can even have a stroll in the park down by the river. This event as ever is staged
by Carers Council for Norfolk as a non-political event by Carers for Carers with no
celebrities or headliners to open or be in attendance, it is definitely a time for the
Carer!

This Wood backs onto the Care Village

Bunkers Hill Wood is a bluebell wood. Or so I thought.

Early
in May at dusk when the flowers are more luminous I
walked through the wood to enjoy the bluebells. They are most dense around the
small hillock at the southern end, overlooking the Yare valley but they are present
throughout the wood. I entered at the north end by the Earlham Green Lane
cottages. I was surprised, as always, at how suddenly the leaves had come out
shading the wood with green.
But I was astonished at the drifts of white cow parsley.
Already tall, dwarfing the bluebells, it was everywhere. The
wood had become a cow parsley wood and I wasnt sure if
that was a good thing. The floor of the wood was awash in a
sea of white under the green gloom of the leaves. Beautiful
but I had come expecting bluebells.
I read about plant
communities in woods and that gives me a picture of different plants giving each
other a helping hand, creating a habitat where all can thrive. I read also about
competition and thought that was largely between plants of the same species. But
here I seemed to be seeing one species dominating and taking away all chances
of the other thriving. Were the bluebells days numbered? Had there been some
change in the wood that gave a competitive edge to the cow parsley? Could fly
tipping of garden waste have increased the fertility of the wood so much that the
future was all nettles, brambles and cow parsley? Or was climate change allowing
more light in earlier so that the shade tolerant bluebells were losing the battle
against the huge aggressive cow parsley?
By the time these worries had crystallised I was at the small hillock and there, to
my delight, the bluebells were winning the fight. I could see a front line

Bowthorpe Care Village Update

As many Bowthorpe residents will have noticed, the development of
the Care Village to the south of Clover Hill Road is now well under
way and the project is due for completion in June 2016, when around
200 residents with dementia or special care needs will make the
village their new home.
Prior to the sites opening, a local steering group has been set up by
Norse Care and the Saffron Housing Association (which will run and
administer the facility) to gain opinions from residents and community
groups as to what effect they feel the village will have on the
surrounding area. Working with Norwich City Council and various
other local organisations and national charities, such as Age UK and
the Alzheimers Society, the groups intention is to coordinate their
initiatives and not only integrate the new residents with the local area
but also introduce existing Bowthorpe residents to the village with a
range of social activities for all. In addition, the group is offering
education and training to community groups and businesses on
dementia awareness, and provide further information and regular
updates about the project.
If anyone would like to represent a specific Bowthorpe organisation
and perhaps offer their ideas about
community involvement in the Care
Village, or simply gain a greater
understanding about the overall
function of the facility, please email
your details to Norse Cares
Marketing Manager
richard.smith@norsecare.co.uk or
telephone 01603 706617.

. that ran straight along the bottom of
the hill cutting the wood in two. One side was
white, the other the sea of blue I had come to
see. I wondered if the hill was dryer than the
rest of the wood and if that favoured the
bluebells. I have no idea. But the rout had
been halted: the bluebells had established a
line of defence behind which they were doing
well.

Chapel Break OSC CIC

We are an out of school club offering childcare for children aged 3-12 at
Chapel Break Village Hall. We have been here in the community for over
12 years. We recently had our latest OfSTED inspection, for which we get
no notice, just a knock on the door when the inspector arrives. We are
delighted to say that she was very impressed with the service and standard
of care which our children and families receive and we were given the
highest rating of OUTSTANDING. This is something which we have been
working hard for over the years to achieve.
Children are extremely happy and settled in this warm and welcoming
club. Children behave exceptionally well, consistent boundaries are in
place. Staff act as excellent role models. Staff are highly effective in
supporting and facilitating childrens play. They provide a high quality
range of resources that excite and stimulate childrens motivation to play.
Staff are actively supported in professional development, promoting
continuous improvement and consistently high-quality care and learning
experiences for all children.
As they say, all good things come to those who wait. And we just want to
let everyone know of how proud we are of what we offer to the local
community. So if you are looking to go back to work, college or
university of just want some time to yourself and dont know who will
have your children then why not get in touch. Or check out our website

The topic I wish to cover in this months issue is cybercrime, also
commonly referred to as internet crime.
Committing crimes online gives someone the cover of the internet to hide their
identity and whereabouts. It also allows them to target someone directly through
emails or viruses, or by hacking into their online accounts, home or work computers,
mobile phones or other electronic devices.
As a victim, all of this can make you feel like you're facing a powerful and invisible
attacker. You may feel under siege and powerless to defend yourself, even if you
are computer literate. Some people might feel embarrassed about this kind of crime,
because they may have been tricked or think they could have done more to protect
themselves.
By adopting these steps you can avoid becoming a victim.
Always use strong passwords, and keep your passwords secure. i.e. use at least 8
characters, include numbers and letters, both upper and lower case.
Always update your computer security, anti-viral software and install a firewall.
Keep your operating systems updated.
Delete and block SPAM or junk emails. Be careful when opening attachments or
using internet downloads.
Secure and encrypt wireless networks when using Wi-Fi (Wireless Internet access).
Make sure your internet browser and any plug-ins are updated (e.g. Flash, Java,
Silverlight)
Use reputable companies when shopping online.
Use secure payment methods, such as PayPal or credit cards for online purchases.
Avoid scams. Criminal gangs operate scams and use the internet as one of the
methods to defraud people and business. i.e. asking for money to pay for travel,
finance a sick relative, or winning the lottery. They will also try passing off as your
bank.
Backup important data - like photographs, music, videos or documents and not just
to the cloud.
NB: If its too good to be true then it probably is!
Protect your identity Remember if you share any pictures or information with
anyone online you will lose control of it. In the simplest terms, if you do not want the
world to know something, don't put it on the internet.
Should you require any additional information on this topic or any other matter, please feel free
to contact the Bowthorpe Safer Neighbourhood Team on the 101 non-emergency telephone
number or by e mailing me direct on lesterajl@norfolk.pnn.police.uk

Wednesday 10 am Service of Holy Communion and Healing
How might you feel if you were suddenly forced from your home, your community,
your people and ended up having to live as a stranger in another place, maybe even
a foreign country?
Today there are millions of people who are displaced from their
homes, from their families, their livelihoods and communities. Recent
headlines have been about migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea
in order to flee persecution, war or simply seeking a better life away
from poverty. Immigration, the movement of people from one country
to another in which they are not native, is not new. It has been part of
the human story since the beginning when Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden.
Over 3000 years ago a couple from Bethlehem called Naomi and Elimelech left their
homeland with their two sons, Mahlon and Kilion, due to a famine in the land. They
settled in the land east of the River Jordan in a place called Moab. Elimelech sadly
died, and the two sons married Moab women, Ruth and Orpah. Tragedy struck
Naomi again as both her sons also died, leaving these three women on their own.
Naomi decided to uproot yet again and go home to Bethlehem. Her daughter-in-law
Ruth vowed to go with her and said these words, Where you go I will go, and where
you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God (Ruth
1:16).
The book of Ruth is really a story about commitment that leads to hope. Whether we
are natives or immigrants, we all need the commitment of others to us and a sense
of hope for the future. Sometimes the circumstances of our lives means that hope is
in short supply. Yet the story of Ruth reminds us that even when all seems lost, God
is still committed to us and offers us hope. Jesus said, I will be with you always.
Prayer: Loving God, thank you that you are committed to me. Please help me show
commitment to others, especially those who have no hope.

Ridiculously Happy!
This is how Leos Mum describes her five-and-a half
year-old son, who is one of only 200 children in the world
to suffer from Mowat-Wilson syndrome.
Leo can make lots of noise and claps enthusiastically
during much of his day, but has very little speech. He
does say Hiya but has yet to understand that this is a
greeting, and he will probably never have more than four words in his
vocabulary.
Leo has global development delay which critically affects his movement,
learning and understanding. At 6 months, rushed to Great Ormond Street
Hospital with cardiac arrest, Leo almost lost his young life. But he won
through and recovered. Due to some autistic traits Leo can find being in a
new place is scary, and sudden loud noises or over-stimulation can bring on
seizures. He spends time at Quiddenham Hospice every three months on
respite care.
In spite of all this, Leo enjoys life immensely! He loves being pulled on his
bike by Mum, Lydia, as they go to Three Score Park, and waves to everyone
in sight, smiling all over his face and making everyone else smile too.
Last November Lydia was able to take him to Disneyland in Paris, where he
overcame all initial fears and was captivated by Mickey Mouse who was
twice his size bur very smiley and very gentle and made him laugh a lot.
Lydia is making plans to raise funds for two very special projects. The first is
to help the Clare School obtain a Hydro-therapy Pool. This will not only
benefit Leo, who is a pupil there, but lots of other children too. The second
project is to buy a new special bike for Leo, who cannot walk. The bike will
have a back support and harness to keep Leo in place, leg and ankle
supports to keep his feet on the pedals, and a metal handle for Mum to do
the pulling.
A local fund-Raising event will take place on a Sunday afternoon towards
the end of September. Watch out for more details nearer the time. You can
be thinking ahead if you would like to donate Tombola or Raffle prizes or
something for the Bake Stall. If you would like to know more , or to donate in
the meantime you can contact Lydia on 01603 469379 Mob. 07960756111.

Costessey and Bowthorpe District Rangers, Guides,

Brownies and Rainbows.
Costessey and Bowthorpe Brownies and Rainbows have had fun
with St. Georges Day activities for Roundabout the World, Hostess and Promise
activities too. Guides are still madly fundraising for their trip to Disneyland so I
hope you will look out for posters of events and support them. I will tell you about
their Kip on a Ship on HMS Belfast next time.
We congratulated one of our busiest leaders, Becky, who takes multi-tasking to its
fullest extent, awarding her with the Adult Leadership qualification for both
Brownies and Guides. This is unusual and in the five years Becky has been with
us she first qualified as a Rainbow Leader then began helping with Brownies in
Costessey and helped re-establish Rainbows and Brownies in Bowthorpe, and
soon was working with
Guides and Rangers. She is
an amazing, inspiring person.
All our units: Costessey on
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and
Thursday; Queens Hills on
Monday; Easton on Tues and
Friday and Bowthorpe on
Fridays are growing in
number and the girls are
enjoying the various activities
and challenges on offer. We
have wonderful leaders to
thank for this.
Could
you

We wound our way through country lanes and Villages and the scenery was
lovely with green trees and the magnificence of the magnolias surprisingly
still in bloom. Everybody ended up at the Norfolk Lavender for lunch with
time to look around; onwards through the Sandringham Estate where the
rhododendrons were just starting to bloom and onto Castle Acres for
afternoon tea.
Our friends from Ashwell Court joined us again, and we had a lovely day out .

ASHWELL COURT
Hello again
After an exciting time remembering and recreating VE Day 70 years ago, life
is returning to normal. Many of us from Ashwell Court enjoyed an excellent
day at the celebration in the Bowthorpe Memorial Gardens. It was very
entertaining and, of course, nostalgic and tinged with sadness remembering
all those lost in World War 2.
We have enjoyed a lovely evening performance by the Dennis Light
Orchestra accompanied by another great buffet.
Then the same week we were lucky enough to have another evening
enjoying Pat James music and singing with once again a lovely buffet. Our
entertainment team really do work wonders producing such lovely buffets at
every entertainment, and also the food at our weekly coffee mornings.
Some of us joined Bradecroft for a lovely Mystery Tour which took us to the
lavender fields at Heacham and tea at the charming village of Castle Acre.
Some of us, not content with our Mystery Tour, decided to have our own bus
pass tour to Peterborough, a three and a half hour journey each way. It
sounds daunting but actually it was very enjoyable looking at the scenery
from the top deck of the bus.
Several of us belong to the Community Choir and really
enjoy singing together once a week. However recently the
choir did a performance at the 30 year anniversary of the
Bowthorpe Workshop. It is quite an experience performing
before others but nevertheless very enjoyable.
Well thats all for now.

Best wishes.

Margaret
