Learning strategy: Comparing and contrasting to recognize paragraph organization

a) Read the following texts and chose which one is better organized and is easier to understand.
The Causes of Addiction

The Effects of Addictions

The Causes of Addiction

There are three major factors involved in developing addictions. First of all, genetics. It is
believed that individuals from families with a history of any kind of addiction usually develop
some other form of addiction. Second, environment, since children surrounded by addicts usually
see substance abuse as acceptable. Finally, and maybe the most important factor, emotional
disorders such as anxiety, depression or bipolar disorder increase the risk of addictive behaviors,
because they sometimes become addict to escape the symptoms of their primary disorder.
Adapted from http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Causes-Of-Addiction&id=920185

The Effects of Addictions

I have known some addicts. The behavioral changes associated with addiction cause the
breakdown of many relationships. I studied with some addicts and their levels of
motivation were lowered, so they left the school. Many addicts lose their job. Drug related
addictions increase crime levels. Drug addicts can die as a result of accidents, overdose,
and due to physical side-effects. And people who do not have this problem have to pay for
the costs of healthcare, court costs and the benefits to some people who have been
affected by addicts.

MUSIC STARS AND DRUGS

I think there are three main reasons for famous
singers to use drugs more frequently than other
people. First, media put them on a pedestal, so
they lose their humility and they think they can do
whatever they want. Second, they have to work a
lot and need extra energy. They have
performances all over the world, so they have to
travel and to perform their concerts almost every
day; therefore, they look for drug substances that
make them feel more energetic. Finally, they are
surrounded by people who are used to getting and using drugs. Some of
them think that as their colleagues use drugs, it is something they are
supposed to do to fit. In sum, I consider that the media influence famous
singers' demand for energy and their daily context can lead them to use
drugs.

a. What is the main idea of the paragraph? Underline it.

1. Drug addiction is common in famous singers.
2. Reasons why famous singers become addicts.
3. Famous singers have to face problems derived from drug consumption.
b. Highlight the topic sentence

below. Circle them.
2.Compare and discuss your answers with a partner.
3. Go back to the lyrics of the song "Salvation" and express your opinion about it.
