    During my time at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel I have worked in most of the pre-press areas in the company including the composing room, engraving department and the newsroom. My most recent work experience at the Journal was in the newsroom as a Graphics Journalist, creating charts, maps and graphics for the daily paper using Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop, InDesign, QuarkXpress and Excel. I also was in charge of the archiving of graphics into a Merlin computer system for future reference and working as a Digital Technician scanning and retrieving photos and converting them for the paper and graphics. I worked with our senior Macintosh systems supervisor to help maintain the Macintosh computers for updates and problems. I also have experience working with film negatives in both the camera area shooting pages and artwork to film, and working with negatives doing color stripping using screens, chokes and spreads to get the correct overlay and blending of CMYK colors for the paper and ads. The film work required working with amberlith and golden rod to create the 4 separate color negatives.

    I was responsible for creating graphics, charts and maps on a daily and weekly basis utilizing
    Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Excel and Indesign.

    – Designed maps for local, state and national elections as well as locator maps to run with stories
    in the newspaper using Adobe Illustrator.
    – Developed pie charts and bar charts for the news and business sections utilizing excel
    spreadsheets.
    – Selected photos and color corrected for placement in graphics utilizing Adobe Photoshop.
    – Created over 4,000 graphics for the newspaper.
    – Recognized for working affectively with page designers to meet tight deadlines.
    – Selected by management to work on critical projects due to ability to complete rush orders.
    – Supported systems operator on basic Macintosh software installation and user support.
    – Archive graphics into Merlin system for easy access and retrieval

    Digital Technician (newsroom) 1994 to 1998


    Scanned in and adjusted color and black & white photos running in the newspaper using Adobe
    Photoshop. I set up the Macintosh system for color settings for the photos as well as kept the
    computers up to date or solved any operating problems that might have occurred.

    – I have also done page makeup to create color negatives for the presses using QuarkXpress.

    Prior to 1994

    – Shot cold type pages and made litho plates from the negatives for the presses.
    – Put together color and black & white separations for ads for newspaper using negatives.
    – Scanned black and white photos on Itek scanner to go into paper.
    – Scanned color photos on a Crossfield Magnascan scanner for newspaper and advertising
    supplements.
    – I created pages and ads on a Studio 825 digital table for Wisconsin magazine. (Colders,
    Steinhafels, George Webb’s, Etc.)

    – I joined the composing room as a metal man, pouring metal pigs for the linotype machines and
    running errands.
    – I started an apprenticeship in the composing room learning page makeup, ad makeup, proof
    reading, etc.
    – I did page makeup for newspapers, both Journal and Sentinel (hot and cold type), including
    Page 1 makeup and classified makeup.
    – I produced ad makeup for customers.

    – 2004 – I had created fishing maps to go with a book titled “Net Results: Great Fishing Spots
    in Southeastern Wisconsin” by Bob Riepenhoff, who was the Outdoor writer for the
    Milwaukee Journal Sentinel sports section at that time, The University of Wisconsin Press
    – 2006 – I produced maps and shot photos for a story in MKE magazine
    – I have created maps to go into wedding invitations
