desktop publishing until October, 2009, when my position as was eliminated due to downsizing.

Graphics Journalist (newsroom) 1998 to August, 2009


I was responsible for creating graphics, charts and maps on a daily and weekly basis utilizing
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Excel and Indesign.

– Designed maps for local, state and national elections as well as locator maps to run with stories
in the newspaper using Adobe Illustrator.
– Developed pie charts and bar charts for the news and business sections utilizing excel
spreadsheets.
– Selected photos and color corrected for placement in graphics utilizing Adobe Photoshop.
– Created over 4,000 graphics for the newspaper.
– Recognized for working affectively with page designers to meet tight deadlines.
– Selected by management to work on critical projects due to ability to complete rush orders.
– Supported systems operator on basic Macintosh software installation and user support.
– Archive graphics into Merlin system for easy access and retrieval

Digital Technician (newsroom) 1994 to 1998


Scanned in and adjusted color and black & white photos running in the newspaper using Adobe
Photoshop. I set up the Macintosh system for color settings for the photos as well as kept the
computers up to date or solved any operating problems that might have occurred.

– I have also done page makeup to create color negatives for the presses using QuarkXpress.

– Shot cold type pages and made litho plates from the negatives for the presses.
– Put together color and black & white separations for ads for newspaper using negatives.
– Scanned black and white photos on Itek scanner to go into paper.
– Scanned color photos on a Crossfield Magnascan scanner for newspaper and advertising
supplements.
– I created pages and ads on a Studio 825 digital table for Wisconsin magazine. (Colders,
Steinhafels, George Webb’s, Etc.)

Journeyman Compositor (composing room)


– I joined the composing room as a metal man, pouring metal pigs for the linotype machines and
running errands.
– I started an apprenticeship in the composing room learning page makeup, ad makeup, proof
reading, etc.
– I did page makeup for newspapers, both Journal and Sentinel (hot and cold type), including
Page 1 makeup and classified makeup.
– I produced ad makeup for customers.

– 2004 – I had done a series of population maps of the eastern region national forests for a U.S.
Forest Service budget presentation
– 2004 – I had created fishing maps to go with a book titled “Net Results: Great Fishing Spots
in Southeastern Wisconsin” by Bob Riepenhoff, who was the Outdoor writer for the
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel sports section at that time, The University of Wisconsin Press
– 2006 – I produced maps and shot photos for a story in MKE magazine
– I have created maps to go into wedding invitations
