COLORLESS, ODORLESS GAS OR PALE BLUE LIQUID,

SUPPORTS AND ACCELERATES COMBUSTION.
HIGHLY TOXIC, NON-FLAMMABLE & HIGHLY REACTIVE
AN OXIDANT. LIQUIFIED GAS WILL BURN EYES AND SKIN

CAS:
UN:
GUIDE::
EAC:

There is no Threshold limit value for oxygen, which is the life supporting gas we breathe.
Oxygen is nontoxic under normal conditions of use.
EFFECTS OF OVER-EXPOSURE:
Long exposures (over 8 hours) to high-pressure oxygen (2 atmospheres) may produce
cough, shortness of breath and burning sensation in the chest. Air normally contains
20.9% oxygen. Atmospheres less than 18% oxygen are oxygen deficient and require the
use of breathing apparatus to enter.
The boiling point for oxygen at atmospheric pressure is -183C (-297F). Liquid oxygen
can cause severe cryogenic burns if splashed on the skin or in the eyes.
Ingestion is not likely exposure route.
WEAR RECOMMENDED PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Oxygen gas is nonflammable, but SUPPORTS AND VIGOROUSLY ACCELERATES COMBUSTION OF

ALL FLAMMABLE MATERIALS. Leakage of oxygen into unventilated spaces, resulting in OXYGEN
ENRICHMENT of only 3% to 4% above the normal atmospheric level of 21% DRAMATICALLY
INCREASES FIRE RISKS. Some materials which do not burn in air will burn in the presence of excess
oxygen.
REACTIVITY:
Oxygen is a very strong oxidizing agent, incompatible with oxidiziable materials,
ammonia, aluminum, alkali metals and all flammables and combustibles, especially
petroleum products, including asphalt.
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: DRY POWDER, WATER SPRAY/FOG, FOAM, OR CO2
USAGE:
STORAGE/
TRANSPORT:

SPILLS/
LEAKS:

DISPOSAL:

Welding with oxy-hydrogen and oxy-acetylene torches and for submarine work with
divers. Medical oxygen is used to treat hypoxia and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Do not store oxygen near flammable or combustible materials especially oil or grease,
asphalt or combustibles. No smoking in oxygen storage area. Keep containers labeled,
upright, and tightly closed when not in use. For transportation, label packages with DOTIMO Class 2 and Class 5.1, hazardous warning labels (diamonds): NON-FLAMMABLE
GAS and OXIDIZER.
Prevent liquid oxygen from contacting skin and incompatible materials including grease,
oil, asphalt, and combustibles. Avoid entering the area of high oxygen concentration,
which can saturate clothing and increase it's flammability. Do not smoke and avoid
ignition sources after exposure to high concentration of oxygen.
For proper disposal methods and locations for the chemical or chemical contaminated
material, contact the Environmental Engineering Division, 876-0388.

SAFETY
EQUIPMENT:

Safety goggles (1000129810) and leather gloves should be used to handle cylinders.
Maintain an eyewash fountain and emergency shower (1000128433) where oxygen is
used or stored in case oxygen soaked clothing catches fire.
USE CONFINED SPACE ENTRY PROCEDURES IF APPLICABLE.

INHALATION:

Move affected person to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If breathing
stops, give cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Keep person warm and quite.

EYE:

INGESTION:

Flush eyes with large amount of water for at least 15 minutes. Lift eyelids occasionally.
Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes
promptly, and wash clothing before re-use.
DO NOT induce vomiting. Aspiration of material into the lungs can cause chemical
pneumonitis, which can be fatal. If conscious, drink one-two glasses of water to dilute.
Keep person warm and quiet.
GET MEDICAL AID IMMEDIATELY (CALL 110)
