LTE Radio Planning Link Budget Exercises

Part 1:- Link Budget Exercise

An operator wishes to deploy an LTE network in 3GPP band 1. It is expected
that the channel bandwidth deployed will be 10MHz and the maximum
number of resource blocks allocated to a single user will be no more then 25.
However the uplink should support both QPSK, 16QAM modulation schemes.
The base stations will be classified as local area base station and initially will
support only a single antenna port. The equipment vendor advises that the
eNB configuration will include a maximum of 3dB of losses from the feeder,
connectors and filters. It is also expected that the sites will be deployed as 3
sector sites using a direction panel antenna with a gain of 17.3dBi, the UE
antenna can be assumed to have a unity gain (0dBi).
The vendors receivers conform to the LTE specification for SINR
requirements however it is expected that the UE receiver will have a NF of
7dB and an additional implementation margin of 2.5dB for QPSK, 3dB for
16QAM and 4dB for 64QAM. the eNB will have the same implementation
margins but the NF will be lower better, 5dB.
Determine the System Gain for QPSK1/2, 16QAM3/4 and 64QAM4/5 in the
downlink direction and for QPSK1/2 and 16QAM3/4 in the uplink. Assume
worst case for resource block allocations i.e 25.

Part 2:- Maximum Pathloss

The LTE system is to be deployed in a dense urban area, with an area
reliability of 95%. Some in-building coverage is expected and preliminary
investigation suggests that single wall penetration losses in this frequency
band should be approximately 10dB. There is no significant vegetation in the
area where deployment is to begin. The user equipment is initially based on
USB dongles there fore body losses will be kept to a minimum. Whilst
interference from neighbouring cells is not expected to be at network launch
an interference margin of 5dB should be included in the preliminary design.
Given the above description determine the MAPL of the system. (use the
system gain figures from the first part of this exercise)

Part 3:- Determining Cell Radius
Assuming the COST-231 Propagation Model for an urban area what are
uplink and downlink ranges for the system above. The eNB antennas will be
at 25m and UE antenna height is assumed to be approximately 1.5m.
