WHAT IS BARIATRIC SURGERY?

Bariatric surgery is a type of surgery performed for the treatment of obesity and metabolic syndrome. It
helps the individual to help limit food intake and/or absorption in order to achieve a healthy weight loss.
It usually involves the reduction of the volume of the stomach so that the individual is only able to take
smaller amounts of food.
In addition, bariatric surgery can also lead to remission, improvement or even a cure of the metabolic
syndrome (diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obstructive sleep apnea, infertility
and so forth).
Some doctors then refer to this type of surgery as metabolic surgery but it is essentially a similar type of
surgery. In other words, both bariatric surgery and metabolic surgery are similar surgeries but may have
different effects. Morbid obesity is usually managed by a multi-disciplinary team which may include the
endocrinologist, cardiologist, chest physician, psychologist, dietitian and physiotherapist.
Unfortunately, because bariatric surgery results in weight loss, many people including some health
professionals and insurance companies consider it to be a form of cosmetic surgery. Bariatric surgery is
certainly NOT aesthetic or cosmetic surgery and is not related to liposuction or surgical fat removal that
is usually performed by the plastic surgeon. Bariatric surgery is in fact life-saving. Read more about the
effects in the following section. Bariatric surgery does not involve any fat removal from a particular area.
It helps the individual to eat healthier portions and by doing so, loses the excess weight from the whole

body. In other words, both external fat (beneath the skin which can be seen from outside) and internal
fat (inside your organs, heart, liver, etc.) will be gradually decreased after bariatric surgery.

Bariatric surgery has a long history. It has been more than 50 years since its inception and recognition as
a form of surgery to treat obesity. What started off as an accidental discovery has now evolved into an
established modality of treatment for obesity. In the last several decades, bariatric surgery has been
proven to be safe and more effective than medical treatment for obesity and metabolic syndrome (e.g.
diabetes mellitus). There are countless medical evidences and patient testimonials that attest the
effectiveness and safety of bariatric surgery.
There are different types of surgeries available today. The most accepted types of bariatric surgeries are
as follows: (you can click on some of the procedure to hyperlink to the appropriate page)

Adjustable Gastric Banding (AGB)

Greater Curvature Plication (GCP)
Banded Greater Curvature Plication (BGCP)
Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG)
Roux-en Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB)

While the list looks exhaustive and confusing, the wide variety of procedures available simply means
there is NO best surgery that fits everyone. If there were such a procedure, then all the other
surgeries would not have existed. Bariatric surgery is a patient-centred surgery that is individualised in
accordance to the patients preferences and expectations as well as the presence of any other medical
illnesses and conditions. This is best discussed with the surgeon during the clinic visits. Read the types of
surgery section to have a better idea of the different types of surgeries.
