Statement of Purpose

Education and profesional growth have always been considered very important
concepts in my family. I have been always taught that the only key that will let me
open several doors in my life is education. I attended school but I did not see the
importance of education at that moment because I was not learning or
understanding much of what my teachers were teaching me. I finished highschool
with a vague idea of what it was to know English, history, and organic chemistry.
I discover the real importance of education when I arrived to college and I see that
education goes hand by hand with profesional growth and that there is no way of
having an excellent profesional development without previously having an
outstanding education. However, quality education goes far beyond from what a
teacher can perceive in the classroom, its core lies inside our brains.
That was the link my school teachers were missing at school. That is the
fundamental knowledge my teachers did not have the mnimum idea of. They did
not think that it was important to know how the information was processed by
students. They only focus on delivering the lesson without taking into account that
our brains did not work in the same way.
Having worked as an English tutor for kids and adults allowed me to question
myself about different situations taht I experienced when teaching. I always
questioned myself about why some strategies work and some other did not, why
some students understand a topic so easy and other students get so abstract ideas
about the same topic.

I have tried to explore different aspects related to the implications of neuroscience


in the teaching of a second language by creating authentic material based on
insights and knowledge gather from the student. I have been organizing all the
data I collect in order to get to conclusions about how my students proccess
information in their minds but I have not reach any conclusin yet.
The most important reason I am applying to the major Educational Neuroscience
offered by you is to discover and learn new information about such a riveting topic
as Educational Neuroscience and to get the essential tools to decipher how my
students process their information and how I can plan classes in order to help them
in their cognitive and academic development.
