Amicae State Executive Board Meeting

On Saturday, May 16th, New Jersey State Director, Soror Gina MerrittEpps welcomed 25 Amicae, 5 Zeta Sponsors and 8 visiting Zetas to
Stockton University for the State Amicae Executive Board Meeting. It
was a very productive day filled with business sessions and workshops.
Welcomes were also given by Amica Beverly Conners, President of the
Zeta Amicae of Atlantic City whose auxiliary hosted the meeting. Soror
Jenny Allen brought greetings from Xi Tau Zeta Chapter the sponsoring
chapter.
Amica Janice Gilliard, State President announced that one of her goals
is to increase membership. She asked all of the nine auxiliaries to conduct an Amicae Awareness Day on Friday, September 25th. Wear you
colors on that day to promote awareness of the Zeta Amicae. In addition
she asked each auxiliary to conduct a public activity on that Friday, Saturday or Sunday. This fun activity should introduce the Sigmas, women
interested in the Amicae, friends and family to the Zeta Amicae. She
said that the more people know about the Amicae and what we do to
support Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, the more women will be interested in
joining our organization.
Soror Kimberly Tetterton, State Z-HOPE Coordinator conducted a
workshop on the procedures to follow when submitting projects. She
also created an interacting group activity designed that allowed the Amicae to create a project from start to finish. Once completed Soror Tetterton reviewed the projects to insure that the codes and the projects
matched the national requirements.
Soror Sharon Suber, State Amica Coordinator workshop was on Auxiliary Management Tools. The last workshop was conducted by Soror
Denalerie Johnson Faniel, Social Action and Partnership Coordinator.
She explained what social action is and how to create social action projects independently and with Z-HOPE activities. Also discussed were
suggestions on how to effectively utilize social media when disseminating information.
Soror Cassandra Carson, State Assistant Amica Coordinator stated this
was a very successful meeting and looks forward to seeing more Amicae at the State Conference in April of 2016. Zeta Amicae of Moorestown agreed to host the 2017 Amicae Executive Board meeting.

NJ Social Action - Politics 101

Congratulations to Soror Dr. Cynthia Atkins (Eta Omicron
Zeta) and Soror Dr. Denalerie Johnson-Faniel (Epsilon Xi
Zeta) on their June 6th Emerge New Jersey graduation! Emerge New Jersey is a political training organization
dedicated to empowering and giving women who want to
run for office the necessary skills to do so. In January, the
organization kicked off its second six-month training program, entitled Politics 101 in New Jersey, where 11 New
Jersey women were selected to participate after undergoing a rigorous application process; out of hundreds, two are
Zeta women!
For six months, these women have been gaining an understanding of key constituency groups and the party structures; learning how to gain endorsements, recruit volunteers, effectively communicate with the media, and create
a campaign strategy; strengthening management and fundraising skills; developing strong, ethical leadership qualities
and public speaking skills; and most importantly, utilizing
all of the above in order to deliver their message and
unique political views to voters.
With hard work and hope, Emerge New Jersey would like
these women and more to change the fact that New Jersey ranked last in Democratic female representation in Congress and had only elected three Democratic congresswomen in the 235 years
since its statehood. Sister Greek Bonnie Watson Coleman hosted our 2014 Zeta Day on the Hill
and we are proud of her Congressional win! Zeta is non-partisan and supportive of all women, but
recognizes the gender and race disparity. Another Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. partner,
agrees. "New Jersey has made significant strides in recent years at the state legislative level,
where were now 11th in the country for womens representation, but to have reasonable balance
at the county and local levels, more women must run, and both political parties must do their part
to create government that better reflects the population." said Debbie Walsh, director of the Center
for American Women and Politics at the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University, where
Soror Congresswoman Donna Edwards is the 2014 Lipman Chair, named after New Jersey's first
Black Senator, Wynona Lipman, whose family includes Soror Karen Lipman. Senator Lipman was
elected in 1971 and her 27 years of service made her the longest to hold the office until her
death.
These graduating Sorors both hold not one, but three public official offices, bringing Zeta Phi Beta
Sorority, Inc.'s total politician number to six! We congratulate Dr. Atkins, Roselle Democratic Committee Treasurer, Roselle Planning Board Commissioner and Roselle Library Board member and
Dr. Johnson-Faniel, Mercer County Workforce Invest Board and Disabilities Committee, Lawrence
Municipal Town Council Human Relations and Diversity Board and Mercer County District Committeewoman. merge makes a long-term investment in candidates by building their leadership skills,
providing campaign training and building a network of women to help them run for and win
elected office! Learn more atwww.EmergeNJ.org.
