EXHUAST SYSTEM

PURPOSE:

The exhaust system collects, cools, quiets and cleans

the exhaust gases from the cylinder.

The system carries the gases to the rear of the vehicle

and discharge them into the air.

PARTS

Exhaust manifold

Exhaust pipe

Catalytic converter

Muffler

Resonator

Tailpipe

1. EXHAUST MANIFOLD

V-type
engines have
two exhaust
manifolds, one
for each bank
of cylinders.

set of passages or tubes that

carries the exhaust gases from
the cylinder head exhaust ports
to the exhaust pipe.

An inline
engine has a
single exhaust
manifold.

GASKETS

are meant to prevent leakage of air/gases between

the manifold and cylinder heads. The gaskets are
usually made out of copper, asbestos-type material, or
paper. The exhaust passages from each port in the
manifold join into a common single passage before
they reach the manifold flange.

TUNED EXHAUST MANIFOLD

A header is a different type of manifold; it is made of

separate equal-length cylindrical tubes with smooth
curves in it for improving the flow of exhaust.

10

Some exhaust headers are tuned so the exhaust pulses

enter the exhaust manifold between the exhaust
pulses from other cylinders, preventing interference
between the exhaust pulses. If the exhaust pressure
pulses interfere with each other, the exhaust flow is
slowed, causing a decrease in volumetric efficiency
(and thus decrease in horsepower).

11

So the exhaust runners produces the lowest back

pressure in the exhaust system. This is the pressure
created in the exhaust system by any restriction to the
exhaust gas flowing through.

12

2. EXHAUST PIPE

It connects the exhaust manifolds to the next

component in the exhaust system.

13

3. CATALYTIC CONVERTER

In exhaust system a muffler like device containing

catalyst that convert harmful exhaust gases into
harmless gases by promoting a chemical reaction
between the catalyst and the pollutants.

As the hot exhaust gases come in contact with the

catalyst, the platinum and palladium promote further
oxidizing of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon
monoxide into water & carbon dioxide.

14

15

4. MUFFLER

Its purpose is to cool and reduce the pressure of the

exhaust gases while quieting or muffling its noise.

It is located between the catalytic converter and the

resonator or tail pipe.

16

How does it work???

The muffler has a series of holes, passages, and

chambers through which the exhaust gas passes.

This damps out the noisy high pressure surges resulting

from the opening of the exhaust valves.

17

5. RESONATOR

It is a tube or chamber in the exhaust system that

generates sound waves which cancel out certain
exhaust noise.

is similar to a small muffler, and it provides additional

exhaust silencing.

18

19

6. TAILPIPE

The pipe at the rear of the

vehicle trough which the
engine exhaust gases
discharge into the air.
