Taking a break from the normal

grind of everyday living, 1 9 families or
more than 60 individuals of BCBP
Mactan took to the mountains for a
family weekend camping adventure,
relaxation & fun. The somewhat low
turnout was because a good number
of members were left behind to serve
in the community's ongoing Saturday
CLP sessions.
Not just your ordinary campsite,
the venue, Q Park, spanning 3
mountain barangays of Compostela,
Cebu, offers diverse oppurtunities

for holding religious, cultural & sociocivic activities. Aside from the
camping grounds, it has facilities for
holding the Way of the Cross leading
up to a dedicated hill as Jesus'
crucifixion site aptly named Calvary
Hill, a retreat house & cottages,
another hill named the Marian Hill
where a 40-feet statue of Mary
Mother of Love, Peace & Joy stands.
At the foot of the Marian Hill is a
small but beautiful chapel & a replica
of the House of the Virgin Mary in
Ephesus, Turkey, believed to be

heaven. And yet another hill is named Heroes Hill
housing an exhibit of the legacies of our Filipino
heroes, great warriors and leaders, as well as the
OFWs, our unsung heroes. And many more like the
nativity caves, lifesize statues of popular saints, & a
labyrinth.
The activity started in the mid-afternoon of
Saturday, May 23, with a praise & worship led by
Programs & Services Director Gel Sanchez. Then
followed the welcome remarks by Chapter Head Orly
Manuel. After which action & fun started when the
games began where the participants were grouped in
teams. The games were like the "charades" game
where one member or the entire team act out things
or scenes & the rest of the team quickly guess what is
depicted or the judges pick out the team who best
describes or depicts the thing or scene. The teams of
Jhun Pardico & Baby Dauz were both declared overall
tie winners.
After the games, the men & the children started to
setup the camping tents while the ladies prepared for
dinner. Then after some minutes after dinner & due to
time constraints, the scheduled film showing was

defered in lieu of the earlier starting of the Holy Mass.

The mass was held at the foot of Mama Mary's statue
officiated by Msgr. Renato C. Beltran from St James
the Apostle Parish, Compostela. After the mass
everyone proceeded back to the campsite for a few
hours of fellowship with barbecue & hotdog by the
campfire before calling it a night.
Early the next day, Sunday, after breakfast, the main
activities were again preceeded with a praise &
worship. Then while the others continued with their
breakfast & personal hygiene, some gathered together
for the morning dance exercises. Then followed a film
showing of a wholesome family & Christian-oriented
movie entitled "Courageous". After the film showing,
the kids were rounded up for some processing based
on the movie. Everybody then gathered together for
the early "boodle fight" style lunch. Everyone had fun
trying to get their fill with bare hands. After lunch was
the reading of "anonymous love letters" from the
children addressed to their respective parents. The
letter-reading made some parents emotional & the
hugging & kissing of the respective families was
indeed a fitting finale to the adventuresome, fun-filled,
family-bonding event.
Though tired, everyone was refreshed & recharged.

Breakfast Ministry Holds

Teambuilding

The breakfast team, under the leadership of Felix &

wife Ethel Angana successfully held their fellowship &
teambuilding activities at Tambuli Beach Resort last
May 1 7. The event was held to foster harmony,
teamwork & camaraderie for the newly composed
breakfast team, comprised mostly of members under
3 years, as they eagerly serve at the forefront of the
BCBP's mission & vision of Bringing Christ to the
Marketplace & Winning the Marketplace for Christ.
Gracing the event were CH Orly & wife Sarah
Manuel & MD Eton & wife Veron Apao, together with
some Music Ministry Members.
It was such a fun-filled & fullfilling event. Kudos

Emcees Workshop Conducted

To further strengthen & fully equip the Breakfast
Ministry, the team held a series of emcee workshop
sessions; first with a discussion held last April, of best
practices, do's & don'ts in emceeing in a BCBP
breakfast fellowship. The second session held last
May 1 6 was an actual emceeing of the propective
emcees. Both sessions were ably facilitated by Rene
Recamara, himself a reliable veteran emcee of Mactan
chapter.
The prospective new emcees comprising mostly of
gentlemen from the recent BCLP 21 batch, were
joined by old members who were already regular
emcees. But only the new emcee prospects were
made to undergo the practical workshop.

The Spirit and Us: The Impact of the Pentecost on Christians

Fr Martin Okafor-Ilozue CSSp

With the descent

of the Holy Spirit
on the Apostles on
Pentecost Sunday, it became a
game changer for them, the
people who once were afraid to
leave the house or appear in
public for fear of the Jews, now
turned into a powerful
instrument in preaching about
Jesus Christ in which we were
among the recipients today.
What happened to them and
what does it mean to be taken
hold of by the Holy Spirit and
what is the implication for us?
The feast of Pentecost was
actually a Jewish festival that
draws a lot of Jews in Diaspora
together in Jerusalem, having
been scattered around the
known world then, they speak
different languages, hence they
were surprised that they could
all understood the Apostles
when they preached. At the
facial level, the event became a
reversal of the tower of Babel
where God used different
languages to confuse the
inhabitants of the earth
scattering them all over the
world. So with the Holy Spirit
people were once again
brought together in unity and
under the reign of God through
listening to the gospel of Christ
preached by the Apostles.
The coming of the Holy Spirit
turned the Apostles on fire by
removing the spirit of fear in
them, helping them to

understand the message of

Christ and spurring them into
action of living the faith and
preaching the good news that
dominated the early Christians
in the Acts of the Apostles.
Today like in the early times
we receive the same spirit and
the Spirit remains the same in
its possession of us inspiring us
to do good, to reach out to our
brothers and sisters, ministering
and understanding what God
asks of us, in nutshell the Spirit
animates us to live our life in
full, bringing the best out of our
fallen
humanity,
being
possessed by the Spirit means
living out the fruits of the Holy
Spirit, Love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness and self
control. These become the
yardstick to measure our level
of
understanding
and
acceptance of the faith, when
we allowed the indwelling spirit
to take hold of us and use us
for the bringing about of the
Kingdom.
As members of the BCBP, we
keep asking ourselves, what
does the Spirit wants us to do?
Going through our creed in the
brotherhood will remind us what
the Spirit will help us to
achieve, bringing Christ to the
market place and being honest
despite of what others do.
Being committed to our
activities and ministries in our
brotherhood and mostly living

out the Christian values and

principles as dictates in the
scripture. No doubt with the
Spirit living in us, we shall do
bravery and like the Apostles
living in hope of the life to come
while still on earth.

Why Should I Submit

To My Husband?
A wife might ask; Why should I
submit to my husband? The basic
answer is Because God says so.
Lets make things clear. Were NOT
encouraging you wives to mindlessly
submit yourselves to something sinful
or dangerous, or blindly following
abusive wife-beaters or adulterous,
delinquent husbands.
Neither are we talking about only
submitting when your spouse can
finally meet all your requirements.
We are assuming that the basics
are in place, being married to a man
who makes the effort to provide and
care for his wife and family.
The book of Ephesians 5,
admonishes wives to submit. But it
also commands husbands to love
their wives just like Christ loves his
church! Those are 2 seemingly
impossible scenarios.
It even goes on to say: Submit to

one another out of reverence for

Christ. Ephesians 5:21

The more accurate question to ask

is: What makes it such a challenge for
us to submit? ALL of us, left to
ourselves, are selfish creatures. Its
true for adults and kids; men and
women. We are continued on page 5

Each day can mean a chance to leave behind the past to

concentrate on brand new hopes and look ahead of joys that last.

Pope Francis: The Holy Trinity Exhorts Us To Live

"One With The Other"
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis
says that Holy Trinity Sunday
exhorts us to live one with the
other, to welcome the beauty of
the Gospel message and to learn
to ask forgiveness.
Speaking on Sunday morning
during the Angelus to some 50,000
pilgrims gathered in St. Peters
Square, the Pope also spoke of the
need of ecclesial communities to
become ever more family.
Listen to the report by Linda
Bordoni:
Marking the liturgical feast of
Holy Trinity Sunday, the Pope
reminded those present that it is
celebrated in honor of the most
fundamental of Christian beliefs,
the mystery of the three Persons of
GodFather, Son, and Holy Spirit,
who are all equally God, and
cannot be divided, the Pope said
this solemnity renews in us our
own mission to live in communion
with God and with each other.
He said: We are not called to
live without the other, above or
against the other, but with the
other, for the other and in the
other.
This the Pope said - means
welcoming and bearing witness to
the beauty of the Gospel; loving
each other, sharing joy and
suffering, learning how to forgive.
And referring specifically to
ecclesial communities, he said they
are called to be ever more family,
capable of reflecting the splendor
of the Trinity and of evangelizing,

not with words alone, but with the

strength of Gods love that lives
within us.
Explaining to those present that
the Holy Spirit guides us towards
full
knowledge of Christs
teachings, and that Jesus came
to the world to acquaint us with the
Father, everything in Christian life
he said revolves around the
mystery of the Trinity:
So lets pitch our lives high,
remembering for which glory we
exist, we work, we fight, we suffer;
and in which immense prize we are
called to participate in.
And the Pope invited all those
present to make the sign of the
cross together saying out loud: In
the name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Concluding, Pope Francis prayed
to Our Lady to help the Church to
always be a hospitable community
where every person, especially the
poor and the marginalized, may
find a warm welcome.
After the Angelus Prayer the
Pope recalled that the traditional
Corpus Domini procession will be
held in Rome this coming week.
He invited everyone to join in this
solemn act of public faith and love
for Jesus on Thursday, when the
procession will take place between
the Rome Basilicas of St. John
Lateran and Saint Mary Major.

basically selfish. Living with

out the best and the worst in us.
The Bible describes us this way:

We have different personalities and
interests. If marriage only involves
two people, it can become a tug-ofwar, with each insisting his/her way is
better.
How then Can I Submit/Love my

the Boss of your life.
Who will rule your life? Will it be
you, your own abilities and your
emotions? Will it be your spouse? Or
will it be the Lord Jesus Christ? Who
will be obeyed when you have a
conflict?

Chapter Head's Message: Let Us Value the Gift!

Orly Manuel - Chapter Head - BCBP Mactan BCLP 1

I am very amazed
to realize that we still
continue to learn and
relearn time after time,
day after day, year
after year. It has been a little over 21
years that God has gifted Sarah and
me the precious gift of community.
And yet, even until now the Lord
continues to teach us through the
various community activities that we
join in. The recent experience we had
during our Summer Camping
Adventure at Q Park in Compostela
last May 23 & 24 reminded me, one
more time, that the Lord is just there
waiting moment by moment, allowing
Himself to be found, teaching us and
leading us at every opportunity that

comes along.
I still have many things to tell
you... When he, the Spirit of truth
comes, he will guide you..., says the
Lord in John 1 6:1 2-1 3.
Amazing, because for me it was
somewhat like a new Pentecost.
Yes, Sunday, May 24 was the
Solemnity of the Pentecost but no,
the experience was not a coming of
the Holy Spirit in a grand way. There
were no tongues of fire that
appeared. Neither was there a strong
rushing of the wind to fill the place.
Up there, in the break from the daily
grind of work and everyday living, the
Spirit of God showed me intently that
he can be found and experienced in
all facets of life. And even if it is just a

you from drifting apart when stormy

emotions arise. We all make
mistakes. But it is amazing how
marriages can heal and grow stronger
when we allow the power of God to
take over our marriage.
If God is the Lord of your marriage,
then you can depend on Him for the
results. God allows the seasons of life
to strengthen our character and
mature us.
The same hot water that hardens
an egg, softens a carrot.
Will we allow circumstances to
harden our hearts towards God and
our spouse? Or like Jesus, will we
respond humbly and say I dont
understand why things are the way
they are, but Father, let not my will,
but yours be done.?

Life in its favorable and unfavorable situations is called part of

living. But smiling in all those situations is called art of living.
