(a)The Garbage from ship is divided as

I.M.O introduced MARPOL 73/78 Protocol - Annex V , which is an international regulation for the prevention of
pollution by garbage disposal from ship. As a Chief Engineer of a ship , the regulation must regard as follows.

* Mixed refuse type of garbage, which is mixed with harmful substance having different disposal or discharge
requirements, the more stringent disposal requirement should apply.
* Ground or comminuted garbage must be able to pass through a screen mesh size not larger than 25 mm.
- The special areas are Mediterranean sea , Baltic sea , North Sea , Red sea , Black sea , Antarctic areaa , all Gulf
areas and wider Caribbean region including gulf of Mexico.
(b) The requirements to be provided on board to solve the garbage disposal problem are as follows:
- Every ship of 12 m or more in length overall, shall display placards for disposal of garbage to notify
the crew and passengers. The placard must be written with both flag state language and English .
- Every ship of 400 GRT and above which is certified to carry (15) person or more, the following equipment and
accessories should be provided
1. Comminuter or grinder.
2. A screen with openings not greater than 25mm.
3. Incinerator.
4. Garbage collection [compactor]
5. Garbage friendly bag.
6. Collection Drum.
7. A garbage management plan , in which to state procedures for collecting, storing, processing and disposing of
garbage, including the use of equipment on board.
8. Garbage record book, in which the followings are to be entered.
- Each disposal or complete incineration shall be recorded and signed by officer in charge.
- Entry operation must describe , Date , Time, position, Description of garbage and estimated amount.
- Each complete page must be signed by master of the ship.
- This book shall be preserved for a period of 2 years after the last entry is made on record.
- A copy of any entry in that book may be made.
- The master may need to certify that the copy is true , for authorised inspection officers.

(c) To control the garbage disposal into sea, Chief Engineer should organize the engine room crew as follows
- Give instructions to be followed regarding garbage disposal regulation. Let them clearly understand the placards
of the garbage , procedures of collecting ,storing, processing ,disposing of garbage and using of equipment fitted
onboard.
- Instruct them to minimize garbage production , collect all forms of garbage where ever they find on board
and keep in correct way as per placards.
- Marked containers to be placed in E/R workshop and other working spaces to keep segregated garbage.
-Do not let them dispose any type of garbage without C.E approval.
- Sludge, waste oil, oily rags and plastic etc , to be incinerated properly. Ashes to be retained on board and
transfer to shore reception facilities, when available.
- Incineration shall be recorded in Oil Record Book stating Date, Time, Position , estimated amount and then
signed by officer in charge.
