Pentecost Offering
Recap
Thanks to all of
you, we were able to surpass our $760 goal by
$154.16 for a total of $914.16. If you forgot or
were unable to get your offering here these
past two Sundays, we will also accept your
donation. Just put Pentecost in the memo line
and it will get the Outreach Ministry Team for
disbursement. Due to your great generosity,
the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and
specifically the Pacific Southwest Region will
be able to assist in the planting of more New
Church Starts.

Its always nice to hear from people in response to my notes [even if its from
another retired minister]. Ed Linberg writes of his attending his daughters
Episcopal Service last week. Choir members were performing impromptu dances as they recessed,
even doing so as they awaited the Benediction. He writes,
As the choir marched out, along with the celebrants, some of the Choir members were
dancing, or almost doing so. They got to the back of the sanctuary and headed back to the
front by the side aisle where they stood for the Benediction. More of them were dancing.
Thats BiblicalDavid danced before the Lord in his ephod which my OT Professor at
Lexington said was a euphemism for `underwear.
So some Sunday morning, before Pastor Dale pronounces the Benediction, dont be surprised
if Ed takes off his choir robe, and starts dancing in his underwear! If any of you decide to complain
about Eds style or dancing skills, I should caution you that Michal, the daughter of Saul, accused
David of improperly exposing himself before the maidens of the court. Sadly, she found that being
critical of how the future king of Israel demonstrated his passion for God would make her unhappy
all the days of her life.
So I suggest we leave our likes, dislikes, preferences and prejudices at the door as we welcome
people who are passionate about their faith, their Savior, and their church. A new member once
approached with a concern. He said he couldnt find anybody who was on fire for the Lord!
Worship is a time to let that fire out as we witness to the power of Jesus to heal and save all of us.
I hope God leads you to bring your fire, your passion and your spirit to worship on Sunday. See you
in church!
In love,
Bob Hasty, Worship Team Chair
Food for Thought (excerpt from Home Touch)
It aint the parts of the Bible that I cant understand that bother me, its the parts that I do understand.
Mark Twain
My grandfather kept a diary for the last 10 years of his life. Last week, I was reading through some of
the entries. On one occasion, he was visiting his brother and sister who were living in the Los Angeles area.
He, himself, was a proud Midwesterner from Iowa.
On this particular day, they had been invited out to dinner, and he noted in his diary that the repast
included: nicely fried chicken, potatoes and gravy. peas, a salad, young radishes and onions, fresh
pocketbook rolls and, for my special benefit, blueberry pie. Pocketbook rolls.
Have you ever heard of pocketbook rolls? Perhaps you have, but I hadnt. So I did a little research.
What I learned is that pocketbook rolls usually refer to small, round rolls perhaps in the shape of a half moon.
They can be opened up to reveal a pocket in which a stuffing of some kind can be placed. In a sense, this roll
is a distant cousin of the dumpling.
Some versions of the pocketbook roll may only be pastry that has been folded over (with no filling
inside) causing it to look like a small change purse.
When I read about the pocketbook roll, I immediately thought of Gods Word, the Bible. Its not just a
book, although it looks like one. Nor is it an ornamental coffee-table object. Rather, Gods Word is a divine
utterance that is nourishing. It feeds our. It gives us strength for daily living. So when we open the Word, we
find that it is crammed with delicious truths and promises that help us to be strong throughout the day.
Perhaps, this is why the psalmist wrote, O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who
take refuge in him. (Psalm 34.8.)
Prayer: thank you, gracious God, for offering your Word as food for our souls. In Jesus name. Amen
