This checklist provides detailed instructions on how to install and configure NetAPP DataFabric Manager which
includes NetApp Operations Manager and Protection Manager.

DataFabric Manager provides infrastructure services for various applications through NetApp Management
Console. The DataFabric Manager application delivers comprehensive monitoring and management through
alerts, reports, and configuration tools from a central point of control, to allow administrators to keep the
storage infrastructure running 24X7, ensuring data availability and business continuance. DataFabric Manager
also facilitates enterprise disk-based backup for large scale deployments by providing a central interface for
configuring and monitoring SnapVault relationships, retention policies, and backup schedules. Services running
on DataFabric Manager pass data to the client applications that run in NetApp Management Console. NetApp
Operations Manager is the Web-based user interface of DataFabric Manager, from which you can manage
multiple storage systems, as well as day to day monitoring, alerting, and reporting about the storage
infrastructure.
NetApp Protection Manager simplifies the managing and monitoring of SnapVault data protection relationships
and performs failover operations easily and efficiently by automating and eliminating repetetive tasks.
Protection Manager simplifies this work by employing configuration policies, convenient wizards, and
automated verification of certain aspects of the data protection configuration. It lets you launch a backup,
restore, or failover operation with a single click.

Before You Begin

3.1 Enter Configuration Information
Follow these steps to enter the configuration information for your checklist, if needed (if no configuration is
required, delete this section).
1. Open the checklist document. Then press CTRL+A to select the entire document.
2. Press F9.
If the Update Table of Contents box is displayed, click on Update entire table. Otherwise, go to the
next step.
3. You may be prompted to enter a specific value for a series of standard fields that may be used
throughout the document. Each field should initially contain a placeholder value, such as REPLACE
THIS TEXT, or a description of the field. When prompted, simply replace the placeholder text with the
appropriate value for the field.

Preliminary Configuration Information
NetApp DataFabric Manager needs to be installed on a physical server running 64-bit Microsoft Windows 2003
Server or into a virtual environment running 64-bit Microsoft Windows 2003 server on VMWare ESX v3.0.1 or
later.
5.1 Hardware and Software Prerequisites

The physical or virtual server which will run NetApp DataFabric Manager must meet the following minimum

Each DataFabric Manager installation requires a DataFabric Manager server license (DFMCore) in place before
any other licensed features can be installed. Once the DataFabric Manager framework is in place, the licenses

You must have a valid DataFabric Manager server license key to complete the NetApp DataFabric Manager
installation. The DataFabric Manager licenses are based on the number of controllers that are being managed.
To obtain the DFMCore license, please follow the detailed steps below:

On the Protocol Licenses Page, Select the Pull down for Show Me All Serial Numbers
With Licenses, Select DFMCORE, and click Go.

Find the appropriate DFM license key that will be listed for your location.

Choose an option to either email or print the license key so that the license key
information is readily available for subsequent steps in the installation procedure.
8.
Logout from the NetApp NOW site and close your browser.

DataFabric Manager Database Backup Requirements:

Identify the NetApp filer that is to be used to store the DataFabric Manager Database
backups. (1.4TB usable space available)
Note: Due to the size of the DFM database, it is recommended that this Filer be at the
same physical location as the DFM server.
2.
From a Windows workstation or server, establish a secure connection to the filer

identified in step 1 above, and log in to the filer with root access.
3.
At the Filer command prompt enter >df -Ah. This will display the aggregates and their
available space. Identify an aggregate with at least 1400GB of available space to be
used later when setting up the DataFabric Manager Database backup share.

Monitoring and Alerting Requirements:

Alerts will be sent via an SMTP Gateway to a default Johnson and Johnson Storage Support mailbox.

management server that has the Netapp Appliance Watch management pack installed.

not been installed in the SCOM environment.

6.1
Installing DataFabric Manager
To install DataFabric Manager 4.x, complete the following steps:

using a domain account with local Administrator login permissions.

Copy the DataFabric Manager 4.x Installer (dfmsetup-4-x-winxx.exe) to C:\temp

Enter 14 digit license key that was obtained in the previous section to enable DataFabric
Manager and click Next.

Enter a Destination Folder that has enough available capacity as specified in the
prerequisites section above (approx 200GB). Click Next.

Select Install to Begin. Installation will take a few minutes to complete.
8.
After Installation is Completed Select Next.

Configuring DataFabric Manager to use SNMP
The SNMP community string must be set up within the Operations Manager interface to match the settings on
the storage subsystems that will be monitored and managed by the DataFabric Manager Server.
Please follow the steps in the following table to enable Operations Manager to use SNMPv1:

From a Workstation, launch Operations Manager web interface by opening a browser

and accessing the following URL:
http://<dfm_server_dnsname>:8080/dfm/welcome

Click on the Log In link on the upper right corner of the Operations Manager home
page and log in with the account that was used to install Datafabric Manager.

On the Operations Manager home page, select the Setup pull down menu, and click
on Network Credentials.

The following page should be displayed:

In the summary area on the bottom of the display, click on the edit link to change the
default SNMP Community string.

DataFabric Manager Database Backup
DataFabric Manager database backup is simple and powerful. You can back up the DataFabric Manager
database, script plug-ins, and performance data, without stopping any DataFabric Manager services.
The backup process backs up the DataFabric Manager database critical data in compressed form using the ZIP
format. DataFabric Manager server automatically converts the DataFabric Manager data to an archive format
and stores the backup in a local or remote directory. You can easily move an archive-based backup to a
different system and restore it.
DataFabric Manager Database backups will be run daily at 6:30 AM and placed on a NetApp Filer. The backups
will adhere to a retention policy of 7 daily backups.
Prior to configuring and scheduling the DataFabric Manager Database backup job, a volume and a network
share must be created on the Filer which will be used as the repository for the DataFabric Manager database
backups.
2.1
DataFabric Manager Database Backup Filer Configuration
Please follow the steps in the table below to create a volume and a share on a remote filer to store the
DataFabric Manager database backups.

-m is for the maximum size that the volume can grow in total (1400GB)
-i is for the growth increments (20GB)

Disable Snapshots on the volume by entering the following command:

>snap sched dfm_backup 0 0 0

Disable the Snapshot reserve on the volume by entering the following command:
> snap reserve dfm_backup 0

Create a Windows CIFS share on the Volume by entering the following commands:
>cifs shares add dfm_backup$ /vol/dfm_backup

Set specific access to the share for the domain service account specified in the User
Requirements area of the Prerequisites section by entering the following command:
>cifs access dfm_backup$ <domain service account> full control

Set specific access to the share for a group by entering the following command:
>cifs access dfm_backup$ administrators full control

Remove access to the share for everyone else by entering the following command:

Scheduling The DataFabric Manager Backup

Now that the DataFabric Manager database backup destination has been created on the Filer, please perform
the following steps to schedule the backup for the DataFabric Manager database.

Launch the Operations Manager web interface by selecting Start->Programs->Netapp>Welcome to Operations Manager.
Note: Accept any browser security warnings that may be generated for the remainder of this

log in with the account that was used to install Datafabric Manager.

Creating A Backup Administrator Role Within The Operations Manager Interface
Please follow the steps in the table below to create a role and assign the role to an Administrative user within
the Operations Manager interface.

Select the Setup pull down menu.
Click on Roles
In the right pane, under Add A New Role section, type in a Backup Admin on the
Role Name line.
Under the Capabilities section, click on Add Capabilites and the Add Capabilites
window will open.
Click on the Groups resource tree in the left pane and select Global once the tree
expands.
The right pane should now list available operations.

Under the DFM.BackupManager section, select the operations Backup, Failover,
Read and Restore.

Scroll down the page to the DFM.Database section and select the operations Delete,
Read, and Write:

Click OK when finished with these selections.
This brings us back to the Add Roles page.

Under the Inherit Capabilities From Other Roles section, add the capabilities
GlobalBackup, GlobalDataprotection and GlobalProvisioning by highlighting them
and clicking on the add (>>) button.
When these capabilites have been added, click on Add Role.

Once the page refreshes, scroll down and the new role that was just added should now
be visible in the Role Summary section at the bottom of the page.

Adding Administrative Groups Within The Operations Manager Interface
Please follow the steps in the table below to create a role and assign the role to an Administrative user within
the Operations Manager interface.

In the Add A New Administrator pane on the right side of the page, enter the group
name for the Domain Storage Administrators Group.

Administrators group by clicking the add (>>) button.
Click Add on the bottom of the page to create the group.

Once the page refreshes, scroll down and the new Administrator Name/Group and its
assigned role that was just added should now be visible in the Summary section at the
bottom of the page.
In the Add A New Administrator pane on the right side of the page, enter the group
name for the Domain Backup Administrators Group.

Alarms
The monitoring and reporting functions in DataFabric Manager depend on alarms and event generation.
Settings must be configured in Operations Manager to customize monitoring and to specify how and when
alarms and events will be received.

Configuring DataFabric Manager to Use the SMTP Gateway For Alerting

In the Control Center tab, click on the Home link. The Group Summary pane will now
be displayed.
Click the Setup pulldown menu and select Options.

In the Edit Options pane on the left, click on Events and Alerts. The Events and Alerts

In the Mail Server field, enter the fully qualified domain name of the SMTP Gateway
that was obtained earlier in the prerequisitie section.

DataFabric Manager Alerting
DataFabric Manager uses alarms to notify recipients when events occur. Alarm notifications will be sent to the
Johnson and Johnson Storage Support mailbox for acknowledgement and action.

Appendix A DataFabric Manager Monitoring and Alerting

Monitoring and alerting functions in DataFabric Manager depend on event generation. Operations Manager
must be configured to customize monitoring and alerting and to specify how and when you want to receive
event notifications.
Monitoring involves several processes. First, DataFabric Manager discovers the storage systems supported on
your network by default. In order to conserve network resources, DataFabric Manager host discovery will be
disabled. Hosts will then be added using either Operations Manager, or through the command line with the dfm
host add command, DataFabric Manager periodically monitors data that it collects from the discovered storage
systems, such as CPU usage, interface statistics, free disk space, qtree usage, and chassis environmentals.
DataFabric Manager generates events when it discovers a storage system, when the status is abnormal, or
when a predefined threshold is breached. If configured to do so, DataFabric Manager sends a notification to a
recipient when an event triggers an alarm.
DataFabric Manager uses periodic SNMP queries to collect data from the storage systems it discovers. The
data is reported by DataFabric Manager in the form of tabular and graphical reports and event generation.

The time interval at which an SNMP query is sent depends on the data being collected. For example, although
DataFabric Manager pings each storage system every minute to ensure that the storage system is reachable,
the amount of free space on the disks of a storage system is collected every 30 minutes.
A set of configuration requirements must be met to enable reception of SNMP traps from managed storage
systems. On the DataFabric Manager server, no configuration is needed to start the SNMP trap listener on
DataFabric Manager (the trap listener is automatically started after installation). The SNMP trap global options
are also configured with default settings, although you might want to modify these settings.
Enable SNMP trap listener
Use this option to enable or disable the SNMP trap listener.
SNMP Trap Listener Port
Use this option to specify the UDP port on which the SNMP Manager Trap Listener receives traps.
Supported storage systems can send SNMP traps only over UDP port 162.
SNMP Maximum Traps Received per window and SNMP Trap Window Size
Use these two options to limit the number of SNMP traps that can be received by the trap listener within
a specified period.
On managed storage systems, the DataFabric Manager server must manually be added as a trap destination
on all supported systems to be monitored. The traps must be sent to the DataFabric Manager server over UDP
port 162.
The SNMP traps generated for the DataFabric Manager events are specified in the DataFabric Manager MIB.
The MIB provides a complete list of DataFabric Manager SNMP traps and associated trap IDs, and is found in
the DFM installation directory.

DataFabric Manager can send only the traps that are available in the MIB.
Description of Events
Events are generated automatically when a predefined condition occurs or when an object crosses a threshold.
Event messages inform you when specific events occur. All events are assigned a severity type and are
automatically logged on the Events window in Operations Manager.
Alarms can be configured to send notification automatically when specific events or severity types occur. If an
application is not configured to trigger an alarm when an event is generated, information about the event can
be viewed by checking the Events window in Operations Manager. It is important that you take immediate
corrective action for events with severity level Error or higher. Ignoring such events can lead to poor
performance and system unavailability.

Alarms
DataFabric Manager uses alarms for notification when events occur. DataFabric Manager sends the alarm
notification to one or more specified recipients: an e-mail address, a pager number, an SNMP traphost,
or a script that can be written.
The operator is responsible for configuring which events cause alarms, whether the alarm repeats until it is
acknowledged, and how many recipients an alarm has. Not all events are severe enough to require alarms, and

not all alarms are important enough to require acknowledgment. Nevertheless, it is recommended that
DataFabric Manager is configured to repeat notification until an event is acknowledged, to avoid multiple
responses to the same event.

User Alerts
The DataFabric Manager server can send alerts whenever it detects a condition or problem that requires
attention. The mail server can be configured so that the DataFabric Manager can send alerts to specified
recipients when an event occurs.
By default, DataFabric Manager sends out user alerts (e-mail messages) to all users who exceed their quota
limits. Whenever a user event related to disk or file quotas occurs, DataFabric Manager sends an alert to the
user who caused the event. The alert is in the form of an e-mail message that includes information about the
file system (volume or qtree) on which the user exceeded the threshold for a quota.

Appendix B DataFabric Manager Database Restore

DataFabric Manager database backups can be restored only through CLI. You can restore all data by using the
dfm backup restore command.
If, for some reason, the restore job fails, DataFabric Manager attempts to restore the database to its earlier
state, and all temporary files that were created are deleted. If this attempt also fails, the CLI prompts you with a
set of instructions to restore the original database.
Restoring the Database From the Archive-Based Backup
The DataFabric Manager database can be restored on the same system by specifying the absolute path for the
backup file using the dfm backup restore command.

To install DataFabric Manager 4.x, complete the following steps:

Map a drive to the following link:

Copy the DataFabric Manager 4.x Installer (dfmsetup-4-x-winxx.exe) to C:\temp

Launch the installation file and select Next.
