MESSAGE FROM THE VICE - CHANCELLOR

ational University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi was established by Act IV of
Jharkhand State Assembly in 2010. I take this opportunity to congratulate the first
batch of students who diligently put up their efforts since 2010 to place this university
at par with other National Law university of the country. Students of the university have won
several laurels for themselves and the university as well and brought glory to the university.
Our students have successfully interned with various NGOs, Magistrate Courts, leading Law
firms throughout India, various Commissions, several Regulatory Authorities and also with
Judiciary of different states. I am sincerely thankful to Jharkhand Judiciary for their cooperation.
Rapid pace of development in the country has raised the expectation of the people from the
institutions of higher learning. Aspiring to be a cutting-edge university, NUSRL with a highly
competent faculty provides curriculum which cater to the needs of the future and create a
physical environment that supports teaching, learning, and research. The new campus of the
university with all modern facilities needed for a world class institute in a vast and open area
further inspires the students to achieve high academic standards.
The students are now well equipped to enter the arena of legal field, they have been given a
holistic development in the University both in curricular and co-curricular activities. The
students have demonstrated high level of skills that are required to meet the challenged that lie
ahead.
My heartiest congratulations and blessings to Recruitment Coordination Committee for coming
up with the recruitment brochure. The Recruitment Brochure will play an important role as it
will provide insights to the stake-holders.
I wish the students best of luck for all their future endeavors.

Prof. (Dr.) B. C. Nirmal

Vice- Chancellor

ABOUT

NUSRL
One of the pristine law schools in the list of premier
National Law Universities in India, National University
of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL) has been
widely recognized as one of the leading institutions of
learning in East India. Within just a few years of its
inception, NUSRL has been successful in carving out a
niche for itself amongst the legal academia in India.
To achieve this, a cohesive effort of the faculty,
researchers, staff and students has been essential at
every step, in strengthening institutional recognition
and in highlighting the unique values of the University
that distinguishes NUSRL from the rest. Academic
excellence has always been the primary motto for this
University. All possible efforts are continuously made
to transform the University into an institution of
excellence by reiterating our vow to quality, passion,
dynamism, innovation and brilliance.

INFRASTRUCTURE
The University has a sprawling campus spread over 67 acres of land at
Nagri, Kanke on the fringes of Ranchi city. The University has an avantgarde infrastructure which includes inter alia, wireless internet access
throughout the campus, a well stocked library which has an exuberant
collection of the best books, academic and reporting journals,
committee reports, international case reporters, other reference
materials, and access to some of the world's best digital research
databases such as Westlaw, JSTOR, Manupatra, and LexisNexis. These
contribute to the treasure for research and education at NUSRL.
As the university strives to produce the best legal professionals, moot
courts have been considered an essential prerequisite to be inculcated
within the students, the true proficiency of a good lawyer. The
university has therefore made moot courts compulsory in the
curriculum providing moot court halls endorsed with technologically
advanced equipments to help students fulfil their aspirations. The
university also has excellent facilities for popular sports like Cricket,
Football, Table Tennis, Badminton and Volley-Ball along with proper
facilities for music, art, dance and other recreational and
extracurricular activities.
3

CAMPUS LIFE
The magnificent campus at Nagri boasting of 67 acres
accommodates within itself every facility which a
University ought to have. The campus life within it is
cherished by each student because of the fact that the
campus itself has given birth to a family, developing
responsibilities as well as a positive zeal towards life in the
hearts of its members. There is a splendid arrangement
for all kinds of sport activities within the campus which
includes a Cricket & Football field along with Badminton,
Volleyball courts. The soon to be completed campus will
also include a gymnasium, two swimming pools and a
Tennis court.
More Importantly, the students are very much
enthusiastic about extra co-curricular activities which
provide to be an escape route from their hectic schedules.
Cultural fests are regularly hosted in the campus
celebrating various festivals & eves giving a tinge of
diversity to the celebrations. Also, food fests are held
every month refreshing the students with different
cuisines which the students enjoy to the fullest. There also
is a cafeteria providing a place for refreshment and
undoubtedly a place for discussing the students
intellectual ideas among themselves.
The respective Committees and Centres are very much
active in organizing events such as weekly debating
sessions, quizzes, Nukkad Natak, legal aid camps,
participation in Lok Adalats and art competitions. Above
all, moot courts are given utmost priority and are held on
a regular basis so that the students can imbibe the legal
culture and attached etiquettes within them. Also, the
students make proper arrangements for intra moots to be
held within the system in order to prepare the students for
competing in the outside world. Inter-college events like
seminars and conferences are regularly held which has a
dual purpose of educating the students as well as
developing worldly skills in them such as organizing,
managing and role playing.
The students also have got ample opportunity to develop
their scholarly skills as there is a 24 hours library
comprising of a wide range and genre of books,
newspapers, commentaries on case laws as well as
journals. The campus is Wi-Fi enabled with an additional
LAN facility giving much easier access to the scholarly
needs of the students.
All this makes the campus life even more colourful and
straightforwardly rejects the notion of a black and white
life which has become a stereotype when it comes to law
schools.

NUSRL
Initiatives
NUSRL has been regularly hosting a number of national
seminars and conferences every year. These seminars have
been very successful in discussing various issues of national
importance. The seminars hosted include National Seminar on
Judicial Review of Legislative & Administrative Actions: A
Constitutional Quandary, National Seminar on Rural
Consumers and the Market: Issues and Challenges, National
Seminar of Judicial Review of Executive, Legislative and Judicial
Actions: Need for Equilibrium and National Seminar on Role of
Regulatory Agencies in Developing Business laws in India
among others where papers with high academic vigour were
presented.
A recent initiative taken by the university was a One day
Colloquium on Tribal Development and the Law organized by
the Centre for Study and Research in Tribal Rights, NUSRL,
Ranchi on June 05, 2014. The initiative taken marked a huge
difference as the colloquium so conducted touched a
completely different genre of social issues and an awareness of
the tribal rights which is generally left untouched.

Noesis: The Student Law Review, a bi-annual student edited

peer reviewed journal set afloat by NUSRL fosters young minds
to pour their innovative skills through their works on
contemporary issues and is a means to bolster research among
law students and bring to light the hidden intricacies. NUSRL will
be hosting its first National Moot Court Competition under the
name of '1st NUSRL-Sri OP Jalan Memorial National Moot Court
Competition' on Taxation Laws in February 2015.
IPR Awareness On the eve of World IP Day, Centre for Study
and Research in IPR (CSRIPR) every year conducts various
events. This year, CSRIPR in collaboration with MSME Jharkhand
conducted a workshop on 'Development & Protection of IP
Rights in Jharkhand' to provide a common platform to deliberate
upon the various ways and means required for the development
of IPR in Jharkhand and the role of different stakeholders.
Legal Aid Programme Centre for Legal Aid Program (CLAP)
regularly conducts several legal aid programs in the remote
areas of Jharkhand by way of Nukkad Natak, Surveys,
Community Participation Programmes among others. CLAP had
also filed an application with a prayer to be impeached as a
respondent for bringing on record certain relevant facts, in an
ongoing Public Interest Writ Petition in High Court of Ranchi (WP
(PIL) 2347/2012) with respect to the allocation of land for the
construction of University Campus. Campus.

Various Centres
at NUSRL

CLASS OF 2015

Centre for Study and Research in

Intellectual Property Rights (CSRIPR)
This Centre was founded in response to an escalating need felt by
scientists, lawyers, technologists and companies to develop and
research on the growing needs for Intellectual Rights Protection .
The object is, to gain a thoughtful knowledge in patent,
trademarks, design and copyright law. More in meticulous the
CSRIPR wishes to gain a better insight and glimpse into new and
evolving areas of intellectual property law (such as the protection
of software, semi-conductor products and biotechnological
inventions, standardization and technology transfers) and the
general problems of patents, trademarks, designs and copyright.
To concertize these objects the CSRIPR organizes a lot of activities
on an interdisciplinary level. These activities include fundamental
research, gathering of documentation, organizing conferences
and scientific service to the community.

Centre for Study and Research in

Child Rights (CSRCR)
This Centre is an initiative to conduct research work in the field of
child rights, especially the problems that abound in this part of the
country, that is, the state of Jharkhand. The nature and diversity of
child rights problems require a systematic and spirited research to
understand and appreciate the myriad manifestations of such
problems, besides endeavoring to find seeming solutions through
research and study. The Centre is a step in the same direction.

Centre for Legal Aid Program (CLAP)

Centre for Legal Aid Program is a group of students which
provides legal aid to society and helps increase awareness
on legal and social issues. To state it objectively, they are
volunteers willing to provide free legal assistance to anyone
in need. Additionally, they seek the cause to improve the
legal scenario in the state of Jharkhand. The CLAP visits
remote villages in Jharkhand and spread awareness
regarding how and when law comes to the aid of villagers
living there and lists up their problems to seek remedy from
the concerned authorities.

Centre for Study and Research in

Tribal Rights (CSRTR)
The Centre for Study and Research in Tribal Rights was
established in the year 2013 at the National University of
Study and Research in Law with the objective of initiating
and conducting research study on tribal issues i.e. Land
Rights, Tribal Ecosystem, Displacement of Tribal's in
Jharkhand, Livelihood of Tribal's, customary law, changing
cultural pattern among tribal's, socio-economic profile of
Primitive tribal communities and tribal development,
conduct sensitization programme to create among tribal's
on specific issues like PESA, tribal education, rights and
health through various IEC Methods. The CSRTR has
conducted many events, both in theory and practise for the
development of tribal's.

National University of Study & Research in Law underwent

its inception in the year 2010 resulting in the class of 2015
to be the first of the graduating batches of the University.
The very basic idea behind the institution of this
University was to provide an environment where in the
analytical, socio-cultural and the technical skills of the
students could be enhanced. The class of 2015 being the
pilot batch is a clear witness of the growth of the
university from a mere rented building to a fully fledged
family, struggling hard to meet its professional and
academic requirements. The class of 2015 endeavored
hard to keep up with the expectations of the legal arena
and was constantly successful in braving the challenges
which every nascent university faces. All this was done
irrespective of the fact as to whether the challenges were
infrastructural, academic or professional in nature.
In a way the class of 2015 has only given meaning and life
to the very existence of the University. This is because
instead of cavorting around with the infrastructural
challenges, the batch fought for itself by filing a PIL in the
Jharkhand High Court for gaining a status quo order in our
favor in the dispute with regard to the land on which the
campus got built up. The class of 2015 has always taken a
step forward in constituting a number of associations in
order to unveil the practicalities of law by way of
establishing a number of councils such as the Centre for
Legal Aid Programme (CLAP), Centre for Study and
Research in Intellectual Property Rights (CSRIPR), Centre
for Study and Research in Child Rights (CSRCR) and Centre
for Study and Research in Tribal Rights (CSRTR). Also, the
class of 2015 took an audacious step of organizing various
seminars and conferences when the future of the
University was still in a very tender stage. Egregiously, all
such seminars and conferences brought the fate of the
University a step forward each time and since then the
efforts have been continued in a zealous manner. Also, the
batch kept a keen check on the proper functioning of the
Moot Court Association in order to make a mark in the

outside world. Resultantly, the batch succeeded many

times by winning one or the other prizes in such
competitions such as 9th All India Moot Court
Competition 2014, 6th Rajiv Pandey National Moot Court
Competition 2012, Surana and Surana International
Technology Moot Court 2012 and Justice Dr. B.P. Saraf
National Tax Law Moot Court Competition 2014. Most
importantly, there is no sphere left in the legal regime
which has been untouched by the batch, be it
representation of the University in various International
MUNs (Model United Nations), Essay Competitions,
Pa r l i a m e nta r y D e b ate s , P u b l i cat i o n s , S p o r t s
Competitions, organizing intellectual discussions by way
of seminars etc. The batch's caliber has always outshone
its brilliance in every demanding situation.
Apart from all this the batch has always been
conspicuously involved in co-curricular activities by
establishing Sports Committee, TOLI which is the Drama
Committee, Film Club, Cultural Committee etc. All this has
been done in order to make the campus life a little more
colorful which can have a soothing effect on the busy
schedules of the students. The students have also not
lagged behind in having a bite of the corporate realities
and practicalities by interning in various esteemed law
firms, Corporate Houses, a number of famous litigants,
Commissions, NGOs etc. Their performance has always
rewarded them with appraisals and better learning
opportunities.
The class has always imbibed the culture that sincerity is
the merit of originality and its presence even in case of
error moulds into strength. Keeping this virtue in mind
they have always taken best advantage of their skills,
available resources and even the crisis situations so that
they could have an edge over the upcoming challenges.
This has been their mantra in form of a strong drive for
achieving brilliance in the academia as well as the practical
world.

BATCH PROFILE 2010-2015

COURSE
CURRICULUM
B.A., L.L.B. (Hons.)

The curriculum at National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi is designed to churn out the unique amalgamation of
national, international and comparative law subjects in line with the prevailing social science subjects. The course is distinctively
tailored to meet the challenges posed by globalization, transnational, legal, social and political issues. The underlying idea for framing a
curriculum with an overall developmental perspective is to strengthen the legal system in a constructive manner and train the budding
