Widcombe Celebrates

The New Parade

In response to the noise,
pollution and disruption caused
by heavy through traffic in
Widcombe Parade, a number of
concerned citizens formed the
Widcombe Action Group, in
1978, determined to see Widcombe relieved of the menace
that blights its shopping centre
- continuous traffic, particularly
the heavy variety.
Rossiter Road had been built
some years earlier to relieve
traffic pressure on the Parade
and had provided some temporary respite, but by the end of the
seventies many citizens had had
enough. In 1981 the Widcombe
Association was formed with
one principal aim: to provide a
pleasant, safe and pollution-free
environment in the Parade by
creating a 2-way Rossiter Road,
thus removing through traffic.
It has been a long struggle for
the Association since then, with
many false dawns and dashed
hopes along the way. With the
delays of recent months the toll
on residents and traders has
been high. No doubt at todays
celebration you will see signs that
there is work still to be done, but
we remain confident that the
village within a city that has been
created will flourish and attract
visitors from Bath and beyond
to enjoy the unique delights of
Widcombe the village where
the City meets the countryside.
Have a great day!
