The diagram below illustrates the difference between a modified sine wave
and a pure sine wave AC supply (as seen through a scope). The modified
output (although it follows a similar pattern) has sharp edges that protrude
outside the normal shape of the smooth sine wave. This causes interference
and compatibility issues with many appliances.
