The

Vol 9 No 22

Royal Honour
By Jessica Howard
Two of Moorabools everyday heroes have been recognised
as members of the Order of Australia.
Bacchus Marsh residents, James Conroy and Denis Purcell
were among 717 Australians to receive the award on Monday.
The Order of Australia (OAM), which is announced each
year on the Queens Birthday, is the pre-eminent means of
recognising Australians who have demonstrated outstanding
service or exceptional achievement.
Long term Moorabool resident, James (Jim) Conroy was
appointed a Member in the General Division for service to
the cattle breeding industry in Australia, and to polo.
Starting his career as an employee at Genetics Australia
(previously Victorian Artificial Breeders) in 1969, Mr Conroy
went on to become the co-founder of Semex Australia in 1991
and the General Manager and Executive Director in 1998.
Serving his respective industry for over 40-years, Mr Conroy
has held the position of Chairman for the Dairy Cattle
Committee and the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria
since 2010, and has founded, co-ordinated or sponsored a
number of initiatives included the Semex/Holstein Australia
On-Farm Competition, Australia-Canada Youth Fellowship,
the Semex/Jersey Australia Great Southern Challenge,
National All Breeds Dairy Youth Camp and International
Dairy Week.
Mr Conroy said after being born and raised on a farm in
Ballan he was always particularly interested in horses and
cattle.
Whilst the employment opportunities with horses were
quite limited back then, an opportunity arose for me to work
at the Victorian Artificial Breeders and I took it because it
allowed me to work in an area I was interested in, he said.
It was early days for artificial breeding and I consider
myself very fortunate to have been given that opportunity

and to watch it grow as it has. It has been a really, really good
experience
which
has 3
taken
all over the world.

John Fabre promotes the upcoming Ballan & District Chamber of Commerce Business
Excellence Awards, with nominations opening on 6 July. Photo - Helen Tatchell
The chamber identified the
opportunity to recognise the
excellence being delivered
by the many businesses in
this area, he said.
We believed that it was
time to recognise their business performance and also to
recognise their staff, which
would in turn provide the
opportunity to excel.
Mr Fabre said the awards
would provide a platform
for local businesses to continue to lift their standards

in regards to business and

commerce.
We hope to run these
awards every two years,
so lets say a business wins
an award, theyll then ask
themselves whats next?
What do I have to do to
maintain that? and as a result it will give them the opportunity to lift the mark,
he said.
It also gives us the opportunity to ask them questions
in return, and just listen, and
hopefully in the future be

Health and Cares Primary
Care Centre is a matter of
fixing settling in problems
according to CEO Wayne
Weaire.
The hydrotherapy pool, spa
and gymnasium will be out
of action from Monday 8
Friday 12 June.
Ongoing issues including
rust and minor flooding will
be fixed.
Mr Weaire said the temporary closure is so that
builders can perform rectification works as part of the
warranty.
The showers will have
works to replace tiles so that
the shower water runs in
a different direction so we
keep all of the water in the
showers and not coming
onto the floors.
And rust due to the salt
water in the pool.
Its part of the finalisation
of the building contract just to fix up the settling in
issues.

Lengthy waits for detox/rehab access

A slow way forward

DRUG FORUM EVENING Special guest speaker Glenn

Manton with organiser Leading Senior Constable Jim Ross

From Carlton Premiership

player to Footy Show regular to motivational speaker
Glenn Manton has spoken
at a drug forum in Bacchus
Marsh as part of a recent
push to educate people
about drug addiction.
Held on Thursday 28 May,
the night also featured local
Leading Senior Constable
Jim Ross, two speakers from
Ballarat Community Health
with more than 200 people
in attendance.
The speakers stressed that
the forum was not just about
rising use of the drug ice, but
about all drugs and that
drug addiction can begin
at any age, not just young
people.
Julie told an emotional story of her son, an ice addict,
speaking about the stress of
having to kick him out of
the house repeatedly as he
recovered and relapsed, and
the wait to get into detox
centres having to wait two
months for a place in rehab.
He has to keep away
from triggers for the rest of
his life. My son is trying to
conquer his demons, and he

lapses and then goes back on

track. I can see why he stays
on drugs, it is much easier
- the problem is waiting for
detox and rehab, she said.
Suzanne from BCH explained what the drug ice is,
the higher level of purity it
is now available at, and the
symptoms of using ice.
She said that it can take up
to three days to come down
from an ice high and for users who have a once or twice
a day habit, it can take up to
six months for the chemicals
in the brain to recover and
for the addict to then feel
normal again.
Snr Constable Ross said
there are statistical figures
on drug use but the real
figures will never be known.
If we have one drug addict in our town that is one
too many; its a matter of
violence, criminal damage,
etc. I really dont care what
the stats are, lets fix it as
a community, he told the
meeting.
Educate yourself first before you talk to your children about drugs.
There is no such thing as a
party drug or a recreational

Ice labs are mobile

Ironically, an esky is where a mini-ice lab was
found by Bacchus Marsh police.
The small, clandestine drug manufacturing
laboratory was used to highlight the evolving
nature of drugs and how they are now more easily
manufactured and distributed.
Snr Constable Ross told the drug forum the story,
saying it ended with an arrest.
Have drugs gone more mobile in Moorabool? he
asked.
We found it recently in an esky. Dont expect to
see large labs, it can be done in a small shed etc.
family relationships being a
way forward.
The greatest relationship
is with yourself. Understand
who you are.
Self awareness: Where are
you going? Who are you?
What are you setting out to
achieve?
He told the crowd of his
work with young people and said he does not know
where his 1995 Carlton AFL
Premiership medal is.
Its not about the medal;
its the journey it took to get
there.

drug, no such thing. A drug

is a drug.
He said that the community has a role in providing
information to police about
drugs.
Where are drugs coming
from, locally? Tell us, we will
go and arrest them. RING
CRIMESTOPPERS! If you
know, tell us. If we dont get
the information how can we
help you? This is a community problem tell us.
Mr Manton said that relationships are a key issue,
with good community and

UPCOMING EVENT

Sunday: lunch only

If you plan to update your home dcor this

winter, you dont need to spend a fortune.
Thats the advice from Rachael Dumic, the
owner of Meltons Home Dcor and More.
You should work on spending a little more
on a few key feature pieces in each room and
then use smaller, cost effective items to tie it
all in, she said.
For a lounge room you could have a canvas
as your higher priced item and then tie in
with matching colour cushions or candles.
Rachaels passion for design sparked from
her teenage years, where she held a parttime position in a homewear store. However
even from a young age she knew she wanted
run her own business, and with the support
of her parents had her own place up and
running by the age of 21.
Eight years later, she joins her younger sister

Natasha, twin sister Kylie, mother Rita and

father Ivan in a family operated business
committed to providing quality homewares,
furniture and indoor and outdoor dcor at
affordable prices.
With a 550-square-metre warehouse open to
the public and a shop situated in Woodgrove
Shopping Centre, Melton, Home Dcor and
More stocks everything from low-line TV
units and hallway tables to small and large
statues, terracotta pots and water features.
Rachael said the family works together to
import a wide range of products, and by
cutting out the middleman are able to pass
the savings on to their customers.
Our customers travel from Ballarat,
Horsham and Ocean Grove because of our
great range and low prices, Rachael said.
We are customer-orientated and aim to
build ongoing relationships with them.

The
infrastructure
budget we had
to have

By Kate Taylor

Moorabool Shire Councils

draft annual budget has
been officially adopted.

East Ward Councillors Allan Comrie, John Spain and

Tonia Dudzik voted along
with
Woodlands
Ward
Councillor Pat Toohey to
adopt the budget; however
West Ward Councillor Tom
Sullivan and Central Ward
Councillor Paul Tatchell
voted against the adoption.

East Ward Councillor Dave

Edwards was an apology
and not at the meeting.
The vote, held after budget
submissions were discussed
at an earlier Special Meeting
of Council, was passed at the

Wednesday 3 June meeting

to adopt the 2015-16 budget
with two changes.
The first change saw the
acceptance from a budget
submission by The Neighbours Place, a Bacchus
Marsh based not-for-profit
social welfare organisation,
to have their annual funding
increased by $1200.
The second amendment
was to have the budget reviewed in six months, with
a report to council on its
financial position and a review with reference back to
budget submissions.
Cr Toohey put forward two
motions at the Special Meeting one for council to write
to state and federal govern-

ment for more funding for

The Neighbours Place.
They dont put in two bob.
I suggest we write to every
single politician, upper,
lower house etc - if they just
match dollar for dollar what
we do, then the funding
would triple. I move that in
addition to their submission
we write letters for funding, he said.
Cr Toohey also moved
that council write to State
Agriculture Minister Jaala
Pulford to ask for a copy of
her upcoming response to
a submission from Balliang
farmer Chris Sharkey about
rates for farmers.
Were quite interested in
the response that would

come from the government,

Cr Toohey said.

The 2015-16 budget includes

a five per cent rate rise, although it is offset by reductions in the garbage service
levy of up to 0.9 per cent.

The budget was hailed by

council as an infrastructure

budget with key spending

on the Halletts Way extension, works on the Darley

Civic and Community Hub,

and a new change pavilion

at the Darley Oval.

Next Week: Why Council-

lors Tom Sullivan and Paul

Tatchell voted against the
adoption of the budget.

Farmer considers selling

Balliang farmer Chris Sharkey told the Special
Meeting of Council that he cannot afford the five
per cent rate rise.
He said that on top of last years five per cent rise
and low rainfall indicating upcoming drought, he
will soon be forced to sell.
Where do you expect me to find the money? he
asked.
Our main expense is rates.
Mr Sharkey told the meeting he had written to
State Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford and that
she was looking into it; but rates are a state-wide
issue, with a Victorian Farmers Federation report
showing that the Surf Coast Shire is the best
place to farm in terms of rates at 0.19 cents per
every $1000 Capital Improved Value (CIV), while
Moorabool comes in at just over 0.33 cents.
Mr Sharkey said that land-banking and
developments in his area, which are increasing as
it is near Geelong, are pushing up land prices
and subsequently, his land value and in turn, his
rates bill.
Councillors and CEO Rob Croxford also discussed
the fact that many farming enterprises have
multiple rates notices because several titles make
up the one property.
Mr Croxford said that council might have to write
a letter with each rates assessment to ask if it is a
farming enterprise.
Cr Toohey told the meeting he knows of Bungaree
and district (where the meeting was held) farmers
who pay $30,00 in rates.
Its not fair and equitable at the end of the day
when a farmer is trying to make a living, said Cr
Pat Toohey.
Mr Sharkey said Quite a few farmers have
packed up and gone, and foreign investors have
purchased the land.
If you want to keep Moorabool as a rural area, you
wont keep it for much longer if you keep going the
way youre going.

STATE WIN - Peter Drever outside his Bacchus Marsh agency with the award.

Gotta be in
it to win it!

By Jessica Howard
After 12-years of helping
the community cash in their
lottery wins, the Bacchus
Marsh Newsagents have
claimed a prize of their own.
The family run shop in
Main Street, Bacchus Marsh
have taken out the award for
the Victorian Association for
Newsagents (VANA) 2014
Lottery Newsagent of the
Year.
Business owner, Peter Drever said he and his staff were
absolutely rapt.
Its quite an honour, there

are over 500 lottery agencies

across Victoria so it is really
nice to have that recognition, he said.
We received a crystal
shield and certificate, but really - the status of the award
and to be recognised is the
most important part.
The VANA 2015 Industry
Awards night was held at
Crown Palladium on May 23
in order to celebrate the top
achievers of the Victorian
Newsagency industry.
Mr Drever said it was the
first time they had been
nominated for the awards,

which were based on a

number of factors including
lottery sales growth, participation in marketing and
promotional activities, outlet presentation, customer
service, staff motivation and
community involvement.
With 12 years of service as
a newsagent and eight years
as a lottery, Mr Drever said
the shops biggest lottery feat
was a $1.3 million syndicate
win in 2012.
We have also had 19 division two winners in the last
18-months, so weve had a
lot of happy customers.

(from page 1)
Mr Conroys service to polo
is just as impressive, with
35-years as founding member, sponsor and current
Vice-President of the Yaloak
Polo Club.
Between 1970 and 1985 he
was a member and instructor of the Bacchus Marsh
Pony Club and was the sport
delegate and past state selector of the Victorian Polo
Association for a period of
20-years.
Mr Conroy said to be recognised as a member of the Order of Australia was a huge
honour.
It really is just amazing,
I never expected anything
like this so it is quite something, he said.
However you dont do
these things on your own.
There is always a huge group
of very, very good people
who have provided support,
friendship, education and
training. Its definitely not

an individual thing and obviously someone nominated

me for the award so to know
my peers have done that is
just great.

Meanwhile, Denis Purcell,

who was appointed a member in the General Division
for service to the community through emergency response organisations, said
he was pleasantly surprised
to receive the prestigious
award.

A supporter of the State

Emergency Services for
many years, Mr Purcells efforts began as a volunteer for
the Nhill SES Unit in 1977
before being appointed Deputy Controller for a period of
three years.
Between 1985 and 1998, he
was the Deputy Controller
and Unit Controller of the
Warracknabeal SES unit,
and has since served the
Bacchus Marsh region as the
SES Principal Emergency
Response Duty Officer, Fi-

nance and Communications

Coordinator and Fundraising Coordinator.
Im honoured and excited,
Mr Purcell said.
There is a large community need for this sort of work
and it cant be done without the aid of volunteers,
its nice to see them being
appreciated.
Mr Purcell said he intended
to continue taking an active
part in the community to the
best of his abilities.
We are all doing a worthwhile job and its good to be
working with people who
have a likeminded need to
do things for the community, he said.
I cant go on forever but
there are certainly no intentions of slowing down at the
moment.
The two Bacchus Marsh recipients will attend an investiture in the coming months
in order to receive the insignia of their award.

Enjoy the sweet life

By Jessica Howard

(L-R) Chris (Ballan Rotary) and Bec (St Annes Cellar Door Manager) are hoping for sweet
success for their upcoming festival event on August 30. Photo Helen Tatchell

Sweet wine and delicious

food will be the centre of attention at St Annes Winery
this August.
Viva la Dulce - the Sweet
Wine and Food Festival will
be held amongst the picturesque hills of Myrniong and
will offer a vast array of local, artisan and boutique
products.
Organised by the Ballan
Rotary Club in support of
the Ballan District Hospital,
the inaugural event will focus on the sweet side of food
and wine.
Rotary club member, Christopher Carroll said the aim
of the event was to bring
people from outside the
surrounding districts and
expose them to what the
Moorabool Shire has to offer.
People will be able to

walk around and enjoy the

incredible ambience of St
Annes Winery whilst enjoying a fantastic array of lovely
food and wine, he said.
Upon arrival there will
be a complementary glass
of wine and show bag and
people will be able to treat
themselves to all sorts of
things such as chocolates,
cakes, cheeses and more.
Mr Carroll said the event
was still open to stallholders,
with the hope of gathering
as many local businesses as
possible.
We already have a number of sellers involved, some
from Melbourne, however
we would love to see as
many local businesses as we
can, he said.
Stallholders, and the Shire
itself, will have great economic benefit from people
outside the area coming to

visit.
We are really looking forward to things that are a bit
different, a bit artistic and
a bit sweet, which will fit
in with our overall theme.
We have received funding
for the next three years so
we are hoping to create the
first of many wonderful
occasions.
Ballan Rotary was successful with their application for
funding from the Moorabool
Shire Council under the
New Tourism Events Grant
Program.
Viva la Dulce will be held
on Sunday, August 30 from
11am-5pm at St Annes Winery, 64 Garrards Rd, Myrniong. General admission is
$15.

Babes to get
the book bug
By Kate Taylor

Project to close the

book on pioneer women
By Jessica Howard
After seven years of preparation, a book dedicated to
the original pioneer women
of Bacchus Marsh has been
drafted.
Members of the Bacchus
Marsh Historical Society and
the Bacchus Marsh Country
Womens Association have
been working together to research the history of the 277
local women who arrived or
were born in Bacchus Marsh
before December 31, 1869.
Historical Society president,
Chris Bronchinetti said the
information was gathered
for the rededication of the
Pioneer Womens Avenue
in 2008, and would now be
published in a book as a lasting memorial.
The original dedication
to the local pioneer women
[held on October 22, 1936]
saw the CWA pay for a tree

for each of the named ladies

and an avenue of trees was
planted along Main Street
on Stamford Hill, she said.
Over the years with
drought and road widening
the trees died off, so in 2008
the local CWA rededicated
the pioneer women with an
obelisk and rotunda at the
top of Stamford Hill. Now to
finish off the project a book
is to be launched at the end
of the year.
Ms Bronchinetti said the
Historical Society, alongside
the Bacchus Marsh CWA,
had worked for hours on end
to gather as much information as they could.
Our paper back then, The
Bacchus Marsh Express
had been in business since
July 1866 so there isnt a lot
of information on those who
lived in Bacchus Marsh before the paper started, she
said.

And the information found

in the papers is very little
apart from Mrs [so-and-so]
was the relict of Mr [so-andso], but these ladies were
much, much more than just
somebodies wife or mother.
Bacchus
Marsh
CWA
branch secretary, June Webb
said the book, which is yet
to be titled, would represent the final stage of their
project.
Once the book is published
it will complete the project
which we started some seven years ago, she said.
A copy of the draft is now
available for viewing on
Mondays and Fridays between 1pm and 4pm at the
Bacchus Marsh Historical
Society office, situated in the
Lerderderg Library.
Any additional information
must be submitted by June
24.

Theres one bug to make

sure young children are
exposed to and thats the
book bug.
Its never too early to read
to your child according to
Moorabool Shire Councils
Early Years and Library Services, which is launching the
Book Bug Babes project.
Mums, dads or carers of
eight week old babies who
attend their eight week
Maternal and Child Health
appointment will receive a
special library registration
form.
When the form is presented

at the Lerderderg Library in

Bacchus Marsh, or the Ballan
Library, bearers will receive
a free Book Bug Babes bag
containing a library card
for the child, a small board
book, and information about
other early literacy activities
within Moorabool.
The project compliments the
popular Lets Read Program,
which is delivered through
Maternal and Child Health
at the four month, 12 month,
18 month and 3.5 year key
ages and stages visits.
Early literacy activities,
such as reading to your

rhyming, all help to develop

your childs language, and

provide opportunities to develop literacy skills that support later learning, Moorabool Mayor Paul Tatchell
said.
Babies can be read to from
birth, and there are so many
good books available for babies. Our local libraries have
a wealth of good quality
books for families to borrow,
and are a great place to visit
with young children.

people is really nice. The response from the

community has been overwhelming.
With products ranging from supplements,
sports nutrition and vitamins and minerals
to herbal teas, natural skincare and
wholefoods Kerry has it all.
There are so many healthy options
available here in the store and the range
continues to expand every week, she said.
Every Friday we get new deliveries and if a
customer is looking for a specific product Im
more than happy to order it in for them. Ive
even had to get a new cabinet just to store
everything.
Bacchus Natural Health also offers gluten
free, vegan and vegetarian products and is
located at 164a Main Street, Bacchus Marsh.

Litterbugs
trash town
entrance
By Jessica Howard
A concerned resident who
spent over an hour cleaning
up after litterbugs says its
time the community took responsibility for their actions.
A total of 200 aluminium
cans were found dumped
at the Eastern entrance to
Ballan along the Western
Freeway on the morning of
May 24, alongside 51 glass
bottles, 14 plastic bottles, old
fast food packaging, papers
and plastics.
The Ballan resident, who
wishes to stay anonymous,
said it wasnt the first time
they had picked up rubbish
but enough was enough.
Im quite keen on keeping
the great outdoors looking
terrific and Im appalled at
the amount of rubbish that is
just dumped, they said.
These are the entrances to
our towns, which makes me
believe that the ones littering are actually locals, and
its embarrassing to see the
entrance to what is a beautiful area looking more like
a tip. Its not attractive and
people should be taking
responsibility.
If there is evidence to support claims, those responsible for littering can face fines
of over $300, however the
drive-by dumpings make it
hard to police, the concerned
resident said.
Despite there being a large
sign close to the entrance

Rubbish collected from the roadside and put in piles ready

for volunteers to collect. Photo - submitted
that discourages littering, it
is still happening too often.
I cleaned up only a fortnight
ago and just two weeks later
theres more rubbish. People
need to understand this is
not the tip.
The Moorabool Shire Council operates transfer stations
in Bacchus Marsh, Ballan
and Mt Egerton, which allow for the drop off of up to 5
cubic metre loads of general

waste.
Charges for garbage disposal are set annually; however
free disposals include cardboard and paper, glass and
plastic packaging, oils and
empty chemical containers.
For more information, or to
report a sighting of illegal
rubbish dumping, residents
are encouraged to notify
Moorabool Shire Council on
5366 7100.

Tea jazzed up

By Jessica Howard

Combining jazz music with

a High Tea helped to raise
over $1000 for cancer at St
Andrews Uniting Church in
Bacchus Marsh.
An estimated 90 people
packed the church hall for
the event, held on Sunday

May 31, which saw all the

fare and trimmings of a tradition High Tea paired with
a jazz performance from
Geelong musicians, the Peter
Hooper Trio.

Door prizes with a value of

over $400 and donated by
local businesses, was given

out throughout the day and

a grand total of $1,335 raised
as the lights were turned off.

St
Andrews
Uniting
Church has supported an
annual cancer fundraiser
for close to ten years as part
of its Community Outreach
program.

Former Moorabool Shire

Council Mayor Dianne
McAuliffe will serve as
Chair of a consultative committee created by Maddingley Brown Coal.
In 2013 Maddingley Brown
Coal received a permit from
the Environmental Protection Agency to create new
landfill cells the project
that the consultative committee will initially focus on.
The committee will work
with Maddingley Brown
Coal to share information
with the community and
help the organisation to consult with locals about work
on the site.
The newly appointed Ms
McAuliffe said that it is

very important that Maddingley Brown Coal has a

presence in the community
that allows the community
to be involved with the
organisation.
So I see that this is a positive, Ms McAuliffe said.
The mining issue will always divide opinions and
thats not necessarily a bad
thing Im not necessarily
for or against mining, I am
for people to have their say
one way or another.
Ms McAuliffe said that
Maddingley Brown Coal
has already invited the local CFA and Bacchus Marsh
Grammar to have a representative on the consultative
committee.
She said the committee
does not have a timeframe or

end-date to work to.

My understanding is at
this point the committee is
ongoing.
Initial committee meetings
will focus on site orientation, informing members
about MBCs operations and
discussion regulatory processes, such as oversight by
the EPA.
Later meetings will focus
on consultation activities
and setting up and administering the new MBC community grants program.
Ms McAuliffe served as
Mayor of Moorabool Shire
Council in 2007 and 2008.
Applications for the committee close on Friday 12
June for more information
visit maddingleybrowncoal.

Wombats to provide
wintery fun

By Jessica Howard

Dogged
by success

If youre expecting a long,

boring winter this season
think again, because the
Wombat Regional Arts Network has you covered.
A number of quirky and
creative workshops will
be held over the coming
months thanks to a $3000
grant from the Moorabool
Shire Council.
Silk painting, saori weaving, wild wood and silver
smithing are just some of
the unusual workshops that
may be on offer if enough
expressions of interest are
received.
Wombat Regional Arts Network secretary, Sarah Peckham said whilst the group
had received a list of ideas
from a number of people,
the next step was to gauge
the level of interest from the
rest of community.
We have a pretty great list
of skills that people obviously want to see covered in

these workshops, however

we cant book the dates or
the tutors until we have the
math, she said.
If we can get about six people per group we will have
the go-ahead.
Ms Peckham said the network, which was established
in October 2000, had received
a great level of support from
the Council in recent years
and were grateful to be able
to run the workshops for the
whole community to enjoy.
The shire has supported
Wombats activities pretty
brilliantly. I think its because the things that we do
are all community enhancing activities, and when
applying for the grant you
have to answer the question
of who will this benefit and
how?
We run these workshops in
the winter in Ballan, which
demographically is the centre point of Moorabool, and
they are challenging and
exciting and not to mention

warm. They arent only really fun, but people can go

home with these great new
skills and use them however
they want. Its just so beneficial for them.
A number of other skill
enhancing classes were suggested such as gamelan for
beginners (Indonesian orchestral ensembles), welding
basics, crochets and glass
bead making.
And you dont need to be
an artist to join, Ms Peckham said.
Its just a whole heap of fun
for everyone, plus once you
join the Wombats you stay
on the mailing list forever
so you can keep updated on
everything that we do.
For more information, or
to join in on the wombats
wintery fun, visit Wombat
Regional Arts Network on
Facebook or contact Sarah
Peckham on artyfactsarah@

Steven Tandy is no stranger
to success.

Since 2012, the 23-year-old

Bacchus Marsh filmmaker
has been acknowledged at
the Moorabool Shire Youth
Awards and the Sacramento
Directors Choice Awards,
and has successfully produced and directed short
films, which have travelled
throughout an American
film circuit and were used
for the promotion of the Red
Cross.
However the list goes on,
with a recent victory in the
2015 Short and Sharp Pitching Competition held in
Castlemaine.

Organised by Victorias independent screen industry

skills centre, Open Channel and supported by Film
Victoria, the competition
invited screenwriters, directors and producers of all
abilities to submit an idea for
a feature film project.

After being one of four

applicants from regional
Victoria to be shortlisted,
Steven proceeded to the finals in Castlemaine on May
14, and after presenting a
three-minute live pitch to an
audience of industry professionals and judges - he took
out the final award.

I was the winner of these

shortlisted four so now I
move on to another round
in September held in Melbourne that is made up of
the winners from different

regions around Australia,

Steven said.
If I win this pitch I present
my script idea at a conference directly to thousands
of working film producers
looking for the next project
to fund.

The synopsis of the film,

titled The Black Dogs We
Carry, focuses on a troubled
17-year-old boy named Alex
in his desperate search to
find his beloved dog, which
has gone missing under suspicious circumstances.
As Alex starts unravelling
the truth and intentions
behind his dogs disappearance, he soon finds himself
involved in a dark and dangerous underground world
that he is not prepared for.

Steven said the script was

born after hearing horror
stories about dogs being stolen straight from the homes
of families.

I started doing more research into these occurrences and for the purpose
they were being stolen for,
and found there were a high
number of reports of it happening around Victoria and
all of Australia, he said.

(L-R) Sarah Peckham and Laura Cook accepted their successful grant application award at
a recent ceremony, allowing the Wombat Regional Arts Network to conduct their Winter
Workshops. Photo - Helen Tatchell

Then I started thinking

about what I would do if my
own dog and best friend,
Nero was stolen from me.
Steven said whilst he initially thought the idea was
risky, winning the competition had given him a massive boost of confidence.

For it to win out over the

others makes me very assured with the potential of
the idea, he said.
Its an incredible feeling
to have your ideas be recognised by esteemed producers working in the Australian film and television
industry.

VIP to connect
to Coimadai

By Jessica Howard

Dont throw it,

freecycle it
By Jessica Howard
They say one mans trash is
another mans treasure, and
a new social media campaign located in Bacchus
Marsh has confirmed just
that.
Freecycle

Bacchus
Marsh is a Facebook group
run by two local women,
which enables users to recycle their unwanted goods or
offer their free services.
Page creator, Samantha
Simmonds said rather than
throwing things away, people were able to post their
unwanted items to the group
and hopefully help someone
out in the process.
We have had childrens
toys, dirt, plants, tools, beds,
tables, baby bath products,
books and even canned
goods, she said.
I think it may be beneficial
to families in the Moorabool

Shire who may be struggling

or may have lots they dont
need. Its not run by anyone
making any profit, its locals
helping locals.
Samantha said she started
the group alongside coadmin, Sarah Britton-Ball in
July 2014 in the hope of promoting recycling and reducing waste one post at a time.
The Freecycle idea is already out there, there are
quite a few around Victoria
but none close to us, she
said.
Items listed in the group
must be located in or within
a 10km radius of Bacchus
Marsh and be in good, usable condition.
With over 1,300 members,
Samantha said the group
had already been a great
success.
One lady was collecting donations for a house

that had burnt down and

she managed to get some
clothes, bedding and even
kitchen appliances that were
all donated by people who
would have otherwise just
thrown them out, she said.
Taking things to the tip or
getting a skip can be quite
costly, especially for pensioners who are just looking at downsizing or people
who are finished with their
garage sales but still have
things left over rather than
wasting things there may be
people out there who need
them.
Giving
something
to
someone also makes people feel pretty good about
themselves and I think
that is what has made it so
successful.

As the long awaited opening of the Coimadai Memorial Park fast approaches,
a very special guest has
RSVPd.
Member
for
Lingiari,
Northern Territory, Warren
Snowdon has accepted an invitation to attend the event,
which will be held at the
Coimadai Memorial Park on
June 27.
From 2010, Mr Snowdon
was the Minister for Veterans Affairs for a period of
three years, however according to Coimadai Avenue of
Honour Restoration Association chairman, Ken McDonald, he holds a personal
connection to Coimadai too.
Warren is connected to
David Coghlan, Michael
Coghlan, William Hogg,
Percy Snowdon and Stanley Snowdon who all share
common ancestors George
Hogg and his wife Mary
Ann Landers, he said.
George was born in Scotland in 1827 and died in
Victoria in 1861. Mary Ann
was born in Co Tipperary in
1836, and died at Coimadai
in 1916.
Mr McDonald said it was
very important to the association that Mr Snowdon had
accepted their invitation.
We think that it is fantastic
that he would make the effort all the way from Alice
Springs. The connections he
has to this area are very important and so we are grateful that he is making that
effort.

Warren Snowdon
Mr McDonald said the association was expecting
around 1,000 people at the
event, which would include
a partial re-enactment of a
ceremony held in 1918.

The Anglican Bishop, arriving by horse and cart,

dedicated the trees in the
newly planted Avenue and
the Coimadai School children placed a wreath on the
plaques of those soldiers
killed in action, the children
then sang WW1 songs, he
said.
In
can
will
and

our ceremony, AngliBishop Philip Huggins

be arriving by horse
jinker, accompanied by

the Creswick Light Horse

Brigade. Coimadai school
children, dressed in period
costume, will place wreaths
on 32 crosses installed in the
park fence and the whole
group will sing WWI songs,
accompanied by musicians
from the Kyneton, Daylesford and Geelong brass
bands.
The official opening of
the Coimadai Memorial
Park will be held at 1pm on
Saturday, June 27 at Merrimu Reserve and is located
at Merrimu Reserve, 732

New Citizens
Four Moorabool residents became
Australian citizens at a small gathering
recently in the Lerderderg Library
James Young room.
Taking an Oath and an Affirmation
that read I pledge/affirm my loyalty
to Australia and its people, whose

democratic beliefs I share, whose rights

and liberties I respect, and whose laws I
will uphold and obey, the new citizens
shared their proud moment with
family and friends.
Moorabool Mayor Paul Tatchell said
Australian Citizenship represents full

formal membership of the community

of the Commonwealth of Australia.
The key point is this is not so much
about you belonging to us, but we, as a
community belong to you.

Dear Editor,
Submissions to the Federal
Governments Ice inquiry
are closing soon. I write to
encourage members of the
community whose lives
have been impacted by this
sinister drug to make a
submission.
Ice is taking a significant
toll on communities across
Western Victoria. Ice addiction impacts individuals
and their families, as well as
local police, health and support services. There are also
flow on effects for educators,
employers and business
owners.
The Inquiry into crystal
methamphetamine (Ice) will
examine the criminal activities, practices and methods
involved in the importation,
manufacture, distribution
and use of Ice and its impact
on Australian society.
It is important that the Inquiry hears from a range of
people with diverse experiences. If you think your input could help paint a clearer picture of the ice problem,
or if you want to contribute
ideas about how to reduce
the impact of ice on local
communities, I encourage
you to make a submission.

Dear Editor,
Having spent eight months
as Chair of a Joint Parliamentary Committee enquiring into the supply and use
of methamphetamines, particularly ICE in Victoria, I
am well aware of the impact
this insidious drug has on
our society.Methamphetamine has been around a long
time and was used by the
Germans in World War II to
keep their soldiers alert and
stimulated. The powerful
derivative Crystal Meth or
ICE now creates the harms
our front-line services are
grappling to deal with.The
potency and profitability
of trading ICE has seen its
increased importation from
Asia with domestic manufacturing at its highest level.Last September the Committee tabled its Report in
Parliament containing 1000
pages of well-researched,
investigative evidence together with 54 recommen-

dations for the Government

to respond to.We now need
regional rehabilitation centres and better facilities to
treat addicts. We also need
investment in education
and training in conjunction
with community support
and action plans to help
our communities in dealing
with this parasitical drug. A
prevention model similar to
that used in New Zealand
would be a smart start.In
short, the Parliamentary
Committee recommended
a whole of Government approach to the problems associated with ICE use, with
response from the Premier
down to the local communities own action plans.I am
pleased Ken Lay, Chair of
the National ICE Taskforce,
sees the Victorian Report
as a basis for a national response.I now call on the
Andrews Government to
implement the Committees
recommendations as a matter of urgency.

Nature strip
goes native
By Kate Taylor
From playstation thumbs to
green thumbs, students at
Ballan Primary School are
learning all about nature.
The Grade Six class took
part in a project planting 200
native species with Elle Fox
from the Moorabool Catchment Landcare Group.
Rose De La Cruz, a Moorabool Catchment Landcare
Group member and also
member of Moorabool Environment Group, donated her
nature strip, and she lives directly opposite the school so
the kids can see the garden,
Ms Fox said.
A former Ballan Primary
student herself, Ms Fox explained that plantings are

allowed on nature strips as

long as there is a one metre
buffer to the gutter.
The plants included chocolate lilies, saltbush, and
dusky scurf-pea - which is a
threatened species.
Plants were mainly a mixture of groundcovers, herbs
and small shrubs, so easily
fitted on the nature strip,
Ms Fox said.
Grade 5/6 Teacher James
Baker said the kids had fun
with the project, and also
learned a lot.
The kids had an absolute
ball some of the language
they were using, they were
talking about the plants,
saying Ive just planted an
endangered species plant, it

TOM

Environmental Opinion

was absolutely great.

They had a great time and the parents were happy
with us because they came
back nice and muddy.
It was good for them to get
outside and get their hands
dirty.
The planting was part of
the nectar project, planting
native bird attracting species, which the Moorabool
Catchment Landcare Group
received funding for.
Mr Baker said it was lovely
to have been thought of to
participate in the program.
And the nature strip is
directly opposite the playground so the kids can see
it grow and develop over
time.

Future scenarios for the

present and the future

Looking into the future is

always difficult and more so
when humans are involved.
We humans tend to go in different ways and at different
paces. I have written before
regarding the weather as the
worlds temperature rises
and the story was not exactly
uplifting. While we can map
out some likely events and
such, as the world warms,
we cannot map out how
we as a civilisation will respond. That, as they say, is in
the lap of the gods. However,
that does not stop some of us
from writing about the future as we enter this warming world. Margaret Atwood
keeps writing some very
interesting novels about this.
This week I would like to
try to briefly summarise the
work of David Holmgren as
he attempts to predict what
might happen. Again, this is

quite a challenge and might

not do justice to his work but
what follows is a brief summary of Davids book Future
Scenarios: How Communities Can Adapt to Peak
Oil and Climate Change,
(Chelsea Green Publishing,
Canada, 2009).
David outlines four possible ways we will go from
our present, when you take
key non-renewables out,
mainly oil and gas, to our
future, on a warming planet.
Interestingly David uses two
pie charts to outline the energy production of 2005 and
the projected one for 2050.
In 2005 global energy production was, in order from
biggest to smallest, oil 35%,
Coal 29%, Gas 24%, Hydro
6%, Nuclear 6%, Other Renewables 1%. In 2050 the prediction, according to a study

by Paul Chefurka, of energy

production was, in order
from biggest to smallest,
Coal 43%, Hydro 12%, Wind
12%, Gas 9%, Oil 9%, Nuclear
8%, Solar 6% and Other Renewables 1%. David also includes a graph which shows
the gross energy available
from 1965 to 2045. According
to this graph the peak energy available between now
and 2045 is around 2020 and
by 2045 both oil and gas are
very low while coal remains
the same as does nuclear and
Hydro while wind and solar
increase but nowhere near
the capacity that oil and gas
once held. In other words
David sees the decline of energy availability inevitable
and also claims that wind
and solar are not able to pick
up the slack. Only time will
tell.

Now back to the four scenarios that David calls the

four energy-descent and
climate change scenarios.
The first one is what David
calls, Brown Tech: (slow oil
decline, fast climate change).
In this world, where oil declines at 2 percent per annum and gas also declines
at a gentle pace but the
severity of global warming
symptoms are at the extreme
end of current mainstream
predictions, strong even aggressive national policies
and actions prevail. David
refers to this as characterised as corporatist or fascist
(which Mussolini described
as a merger of state and corporate power). I see evidence
of this in 2015. Rapid onset
of climate change tends,
according to David, to support centralised nationalist
systems because the conse-

quences of chaotic weather

and other factors leads to
demands for strong government action to protect people from high food and fuel
costs. In this scenario David
believes that there will be a
series of short but intense
international conflicts and
also interestingly enough he
believes that fundamentalist
religions and cults will play
a stronger role in the lives of
the working and underemployed classes. Is this another prediction that is bearing
fruit in 2015?
The second scenario is what
David calls, Green Tech:
(slow energy decline rates
and mild climate change
symptoms). This world is the
most benign in that adverse
climate changes are at the
low end of the projections.
In this world because oil

and gas production declines

slowly the sense of chaos is
more muted without major
economic collapse or conflict
(I must add a suggestion of
my own here that the economic world is not in a good
shape at present and could
very well collapse regardless
of climate of energy decline
we will wait and see). In this
world the renewable energy
sources grow rapidly and
the relatively benign climate
allows ensures good prices
for natural commodities.
But more on this second scenario and the final two next
week.
What is your opinion?

REAL ESTATE

Prices starting from $149,000

maine and Kyneton prices

have increased as families,
priced out of Melbourne,
have bought into the area.
And generally the properties which have increased
the most are those close to
the station, although other
factors such as character features and the quality of the
home also have a bearing.
Competition has an impact
on property prices. At a time
when interest rates are low
and of course at present
they are at an historic low
theres often more competition for homes, and buyers
will often bid at higher levels
for properties.
While market factors are
beyond the control of vendors, owners can improve
their property before sale.
Sometimes relatively inexpensive improvements can
make a big difference, but it
is important to obtain advice
before spending time and
money. Overcapitalising a
property by spending more
than can be recouped at sale,
or pricing it beyond what
people are willing to pay in
that area means it is wasted.
But it is important to emphasise that buying property is a long-term investment.
While some people are lucky
enough to buy and sell in a
relatively short period and
make money, REIV data
shows that there are excellent capital gains to be made
for those willing to hold a
house in the longer term.
For example, in 2008 the
median price of a threebedroom home in inner
Melbourne was $740,000. By
December last year it was
$990,000. In outer Melbourne
the median of $320,000 was
$432,000 by December last
year. And in regional Victoria the increase was from
$240,000 for a three-bedroom home to $302,500.

Many cultures,
one game
A special plaque was presented to all
AFL Goldfields clubs during a first ever
Indigenous Luncheon as part of the Indigenous Round of weekend football on
May 30/31.
Aaron Clarke and John Kanoa were representatives from the indigenous community who handed out the plaques to
club officials.
Ballarat Football League clubs Darley and Bacchus Marsh accepted their
plaques, as did CHFL club Bungaree.
Only five of the 18 CHFL clubs were in
attendance to accept their plaque.
Darley played North Ballarat during that
round and wore a special jumper to commemorate the event.

This jumper gives the club, the league

and the community a visible presence on
the field. It is a credit to all involved, organiser and President Darley FNC Grant
Wright said.
A Sherrin football, hand painted by
Aboriginal community member Marley
Smith, was auctioned and the money donated back into the local indigenous community. Creswick President Mick Alsop
was the successful bidder, claiming the
collectable for $600.
Ms Smith said it took around 15 hours to
paint, as the yellow wouldnt go on.
The football is painted as a unity. Football unites everyone as we are one, not
separate cultures.

Col Weightman (Bungaree) receives his plaque

from Aaron Clarke.

The lucky bidder, Mick Alsop (Creswick FNC)

with Marley Smith. Photos Helen Tatchell

PISCESFebruary 20-March 20
Difficulites with relatives can be resolved, but realize that
compromise may not be exactly 50-50. You can express
yourself well visually so this is a good week to take up
or resume sketching.
BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK
You are renowned for your intuition, your sensitivity and
your resourcefullness. You are also said to be highly
patriotic and sometimes you get carried away with your
emotions. Travel is favourable, both for pleasure and
work.
